How Legacy of Kains Creator Lost Everything

- Опубликовано: 27 апр 2023
- Storytelling has been an indispensable tool of human communication throughout history, and its significance persists in today's technological world. Video games, in particular, have emerged as a powerful medium for storytelling, with some games rivaling the best movies in their narrative depth and complexity. However, back in 1996, long before big-budget games became the norm, silicon Knights a gaming studio with a strong interest in academia, dared to venture into console gaming with a game called Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. It mesmerized players with its intricate dark storyline and thought-provoking narrative, arguably becoming the crown jewel of game story telling
Legacy of Kain would be subject to a host of controversy after its release, largely a lengthy lawsuit that would see Silicon Knights lose the rights to their Gothic Shakespearean magnum opus to Crystal Dynamics. But the resounding success of the first game paved the way for a beloved sequel that was equally as fascinating and captivating as its source material. But the franchise would see itself subject to more monsters throughout the years with corporate interference, drastic cuts and time restraints to future installments that even Kain nor Raziel could fix shifting through time. The duo would end up being stranded in 2003, leaving many fans of the series stuck in perpetual hope of their return. This is the Rise and Fall of Legacy of Kain.

You were too pure for this world Legacy of Kain
truly
Sad such a dope series hasn't been brought back yet >
ironic that I was the one suffering... nothing as pedestrian as physical pain, but rather the cruel jab of impotent anger... The hunger, for revenge.
Man at least put it on the playstation store or in the classics collection
It's their own damn fault for killing it, by not keeping it to consistent archetype.
The series was schizophrenic, it flip-flopped from a Zelda clone, to Metroidvania, to action adventure, to hack and slash. It never got to build a consistent target audience and fanbase.
The dialogue in this series will forever stick with me. Nothing has ever matched it in writing and delivery. They just dont make them like the used to.
Yeah the writing is wild. It's legit a shakespeare play
Every single sentence of Kain and The Elder is quotable by itself.
All few months I watch the full series of cutscenes again and you feel like every word is excactly where it should be. Not a single sillable wasted.
Yeah, in contrast with Dead Sun's infamous "F#@& you, vampire", rather than "Go to Hell, filthy b@$+@rd".
Let's not forget the Elder God's voice too! Outstanding delivery!
Have any of you guys ever played a game called Draconus Cult of the Wyrm on the Sega Dream Cast?...... that game was ahead of its time and the dev team behind it will surprise you: TrayArk from the Call of Duty game of today!?
No game needs a full on remake like Blood Omen. Holy shit. The best unfinished vampire fantasy ever. Nothing had acting as good as this when it was current. I'd be so pumped for a sequel or a full on remake of blood omen
God forbid the current creatively broke world implemented its trademark forced diversity swaps!
The best thing they ever did was book Simon Templeman to voice Kain. I'll watch entire series let's plays just to listen to the excellent voice work while I do other things.
Tony Jay's voice lives in my head rent-free
forever
The reason Hunchback actually has the best music of Disney's classics
I love and miss legacy of Kain.
you are not alone!
I suspect that the legal issues around that first game are exactly why it hasn't been re-released...and Hennig leaving after the final game "dark prophecy" was cancelled meant that we will never get a proper ending, either.
Yeah Hennig leaving was a huge loss for the LoK series. Sadly, I don't think the series will ever get the ending it deserves.
I still remeber playing sould reaver - I was kiddo back then - it was amazing world to sink in.
Best series of games of a old dying world...
Yup! It needs to make a comeback but I'm not sure it will =(
@@GameStudioLore if it does they should remake the first game!
@@noahdean9685amen to that. blood omen was sooo good
@@usern4metak3ns I imagine that the remake well have a dark souls combat style maybe there could be exp maybe customize Kain outfit kind of like in God of war 2018 maybe new weapons to use and new abilities maybe a secret boss fight where Kain fight's raziel from the future but it turns out to be a dream or a vision set by Mobius.
@@noahdean9685 Please, anything but Dark Souls. I want the game to have its own identity, not just to be another souls clone.
This series means a lot to me since I grew up with it (soul reaver and beyond) and it hurts that we’ll probably never get a sequel or even a remaster/remake of it.
Hey never say never! It could happen
This was very well put together and brought up good memories. Cheers
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
I know a lot of people think it's way too late to continue the story from where it left off, but I beg to differ. With how advanced games have become nowadays, not only can they make a full reboot Spyro reignited series style, but can also continue the franchise using the shelved concepts from Dark Prophecy better then it could've been back then.
Even the story can be better. It's true we may never get all of the original voice actors back, especially the voice of the Elder God, may he rest in peace. But I truly believe that the story they wanted to tell has a chance to come to fruition. And from the survey last year about a return of Legacy of Kain, I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of time before we as gamers can return to the world of Nosgoth, and continue Kain's story to its absolute fullest. #KainWillReturn
I really hope so. Its a dope franchise tht got kinda shafted like TR did. Weird that both were published with Eidos >
A sequel's not gonna happen. Not when the previous entry is older than majority of prospective buyers. It has waaaaay too much story baggage for someone to just jump in and the original series is way too aged to just rerelease as remasters for the modern audience. They would need a full, from the ground up remake treatment. And with how freakishly expensive to make single player, story driven games became nowadays - it's a risky proposal to say the least.
If that survey did make something move in regards to this franchise, it's 99% gonna be a remake of Blood Omen. But then again I'm not quite sure about the legal situation of that particular game as I remember it was contested between Silicon Knights and Crystal Dynamics back in the day. Which is probably why it never got a rerelease.
I'm glad that decades later so many people are still making RUclips videos about this game series. Next to Final Fantasy legacy of Kain was the series that kept me gaming into the PlayStation error and beyond period I wish that we could have given up some of these triple AAA games and gun at least one finale game for the series series.
Yeah it's sad it didn't get it's big finale. Maybe it will one day 😭 thanks for watching!
I still remember the music. A perfect soundtrack.
Gaming music is so good
One of the best series in gaming history and yet here we are 20 years since the last legacy of kain game...
Yeah sadly been stuck in gaming purgatory, where it might just stay...hope not
Someone should just give this series to Fromsoftware. I'm not asking for a soulslike game, but From is exceptionally good at making beautiful dark gothic worlds and intricate and complex storytelling.
I feel that! Gameplay wise they would be great! Storytelling wise for LoK im not so sure. Its based on a lot of cutscenes and great actors, where FromSoft likes to be very intricate and mysterious with their lore. It would be completely different for them
@@GameStudioLore ah yes, I agree. I don't mean just imitating their style but incorporating aspects. Keep the cutscenes and a clear storyline, but also add secrets and open ended details through item description and enviromental storytelling.
As much as I love the worlds that FS creates, I don't think they are the right ones to bring back something like LoK. The narrative method they use is completely different. If I had to mention a studio, I would say Santa Monica or Bioware (when they were in their prime) but today Santa Monica
@@danyknight9107 A think FS absolutely could. Sekiro, for example, was very straight forward in its narrative, being very different from the souls games in this aspect.
@@GameStudioLore Exactly, and intelligent dialogue is essential to creating a good LoK game, while From software is the opposite of Silicone Knights when it comes to writing dialogue. Dialogues in From games are just word salad put together in the hope that people will read something deep into it. They're excellent designers, but bad dialogue writers. Story wise, I've seen channels of excellent storytellers such as VaatiVidya reconstruct the history of the dark souls games, based on subtle clues that the developers put in the games, but that's the youtuber's merit more than it is the game developer's.
"So, whats this about? Sum it up?"
" That will take hours."
"No, just give me the basic outline."
"...That will take hours."
I've boiled it down to 'time traveling vampire conspiracy featuring alien invasions and a false god octopus'.
Never fails to get the point across.
@@stinkfinga4918 I mean... that doesn't touch what the Soul Reaver is at all. I don't even think there is time traveling in the first one except for the last scene.
@@BoyKagome it's the most basic way to describe the series without going into detail for hours.

Bro.... i remember playing this as a kid with my brother. Literally one of my favorite series that imo could've rivaled something like dmc and GoW. Love the story and in all honesty I'm surprised it HASN'T been remaked or bought by a different company. Kain was one of the coolest vampires in gaming history! You sir have earned a sub with this nostalgic and informative video of a game that bred my love for third-person hack n slash games.
Hey I appreciate that! Yeah it seems to be tailored made for the ps5 now. I think a remaster is more on the cards than a complete remake though. But if Embracer Group feels like making a splash in the gaming community they would launch a remake or continuation!
Strange how corporate meddling is ALWAYS a detriment to franchises, just look at the sickness that is disney and EA
As an huge LoK fan,it makes me soo happy when i hear news of the series revival and gives me hope. And after,i remember the quality of the revival/remakes of old game franchises that they release today, and gives me the cold shower of today's gaming practices. And without Amy Henning.....still great vid man, thumbs up 👍
Legacy of Kain is one of my favorite franchises. I enjoyed hearing about the backstory behind Kain's legacy! However; I have a few constructive criticisms to help improve future videos. The biggest thing I noticed was that when you listed things, or if you had a long sentence, you spoke really fast and lost some annunciation so that some words meshed together and I had to go back to listen again to understand what you said. I would recommend speaking a little slower when recording. Other than that, I enjoyed the content!
I appreciate it! Its mostly me just being nervous recording still. Literally in a room alone but still its hard haha. Thanks for watching!
Youre a legend if you lived through the Legacy Of Kain era 🫡 a true golden age
Sure was - the ten years from 95 to 05 had some massive titles.
One of the few series that absolutely deserves a remake.
we need It
Not in this climate. Let it dormant.
History Abhors a Paradox and Square Enix Abhors a Legacy of Kain Sequel.
Maybe one day
If Embracer Group does anything with this series I think their first move should be a remastered collection of all the games simply titled “The Legacy of Kain”. From there, depending on the sales success of that remaster, try their hands at a full remake of one of the original games in order to learn how to properly develop for the series and understand the necessary tone to capture.
If that miraculously succeeds, attempt to continue the story of this grand legacy. I’m thinking like a business in the way I assume things will go with the acquisition. They wanna make money obviously so they’ll wanna test the true potential of the series.
Hopefully something new comes from this series but if it’s not reminiscent of what came before, I truly don’t want additional stories. I’ll be satisfied with a remastered port, at least with that the series can live on rather than be forgotten.
Man, I loved this series. I remember my cousin giving me a copy of Blood Omen on Playstation and loving it. I was pretty young so it kind of scared me a bit to play it at the time, which made it very interesting compared to anything else I had at the time.
Your cousin gave a kid Bloom Omen? lol. Thats wild
@@GameStudioLore Legacy of Kalmia: Bloom Omen
That's nothing, though. We played Thrill Kill as kids, among other things, and I was intimidated by Ozzy's 1992 album 'Dehumanizer' cover art - we were tender, but played the good ish.
As much as I love what the series became overall.... I HATE that society seems to think Silicone Knights are in the wrong about the them vs Crystal Dynamics owning the LOK IP rights...
Happens a lot with games. Look at Devil May Cry, the team that created it weren't allowed to work on another entry, and didn't even know a sequel was being created right after it released.
Just goes to show, if you've got a good idea, keep it to yourself so it doesn't get stolen and someone else in the company gets all the credit.
No game has been able to match the dialogue, delivery, and voice acting of Legacy of Kain. This series deserves a revival, but without Amy Hennig it wouldn't be worth it.
This is true. and sadly I'm not sure thattll happen =(
The studios seem to have answered the series' central question; What if you toss a coin so many times that eventually it lands on it's edge?
personally i love Blood Omen 2, has the worst boss fights, but the most interesting character and world designs. I especially love the character designs. And the world itself feels lived in compared to the other games, where almost everywhere you go is just some ruins or castles overrun by monsters.
Indeed, Now they need another one to tie in all the elements! One day... maybe
Sad to never see the story complete but I think it was a great ride while it lasted!
maybe uitll come back who knows
The writing, casting and performances by that cast were amazing in the LoK series. I dare say we won't see a series or even game quite like LoK.
def not. It was on a different level.
That Trinity is what immortalized the series not the actual gameplay. Which ironic since I've seen Lok fanboys trashing other games for their gameplay(including in this comment section) but LoK wasn't anything to write home in that department either.
Everytime i see an legacy of kain related video i watch and like.
hahah thanks for watching!
Raziel is one of my fav characters I have ever played in a game! I would love a Legacy of Raziel game to come out!
Thatd be cool. I think Raziel would get a new game over Kain honestly if they did one
I like the story of kain far more than raziel
One of my favorite characters too & incredibly enough my son's voice sounds like SR1 Raziel.
Yo I'm the 1k sub! I love the Legacy of kain series. I actually just bought all of them CIB to play through a couple weeks back.
Ayo! Appreciate it! I need to buy them as well! 🫣
I’ve got Legacy of Kain deafince for Christmas was like 9 years old and the only thing I remember is the badass cutscene I’m the beginning
Those cutscenes from that series are so good
@@GameStudioLore yes like I remember the music scared me for being so loud lol but the music was so good way ahead of its time
I love the juxtaposition of "killing innocents was necessary" as you're feeding with a full blood meter. Maybe it's not so necessary. lol

Thank you for making this video. Top notch stuff man. You deserve way more views.
I appreciate that! Thank you!
Miss this franchise. The writing and lore was top notch. I replayed all of them over and over. I wish someone would pick it up and reboot it.
At least it ended on a decent note, if not a cliffhanger.
As opposed to just half finished and in the ether forever.
Yeah, ending it with some sort of an "actual" ending left fans with something positive
One of my favorite games of all time. I’m so glad I held onto this one
I played Soul Reaver over 20 years ago and I still talk to ppl about it, such a amazing series. It has a special place in my heart!!

Loved these games back in the day. 80s and 90s were great. I miss going to arcades to battle people.
I had such an incredible amount of fun in Nosgoth PVP and when it suddenly got shut down it left me completely flabbergasted. That game felt so smooth that literally every single character of both factions was fun to play.
I never knew it existed honesty. It looked pretty cool from some of the gameplay I watched. I wonder if they had pivoted it away from LoK if it would have survived
@@GameStudioLore Vampires could climb buildings assassin's creed style and looking to get the hunters separated and pick them off. The mechanics were insanely unique. Like the one vampire who could fly at all times ,and you had to be good at the flying mechanics where you could gain and lose velocity, and the faster you go the easier it would be to dive into the enemies, pick one hunter off and take them high into the air and drop them to their death. Hunters were also all very different with gadgets that could immobilize vampires and they had to work together to peel suppressing vampires off of the allies. It was honestly just very smooth and polished.
Great video. I hope the original gets a remake. I feel like I’m in the minority but I always enjoyed the original BO the most. I remember watching that intro cut scene so many times.
sameeeeeeeeeee
I absolutely love this series especially how Raziel and Kain’s destiny’s are connected one of the best stories ever
Don't want to compare, but just the cutscenes alone from Blood Omen Legacy of Kain would surpass in light-years Castelevania series from netflix. Legacy of kain is a true story, a story as tragedy as literature from high renaissance evoked feelings. Please ressurect Kain.
A netflix show done well wouldbe kinda sick
i ache so much for a LoK follow up.. shame that the Old god and Janos voice actors passed away already
Oh its making a come back!! Alot of us signed the petition!! Its either getting a remake or a sequel 🎉🎉🎉...legacy of kain was my favorite games back in the day...the voice acting in blood omen was the best

It could! But i think itll be in the form of a remaster >
If they can bring this series back and finish it i will die happy. I've been a fan since the first blood omen.
they did a survey about what people want in a new lok game when square enix sold the rights and i've seen an increase of new videos in my feed about how dead lok is when it actually has a spark of hope now.Its like everyone who wanted to make a video about lok being dead is using their last oportunity to release it :D.
The king may return.
That was accidental timing for me lol. I actually had no idea. But hopefully LoK sees a return in some form!
Well done. We had it so good back then I didn't even know it! LoK franchise needs a remake.
Thanks! We did! it could get a remake! If the KOTOR remake goes well for Embracer maybe theyll do LoK!
DAMN ANOTHER BANGER !!!! cant believe this is already out when the tomb raider one just dropped
First the Legacy of Kain did not fall let's get that one straight . This franchise is still one of the best franchises out there to this day . WHAT this series needs is a remake with today's technology in my opinion there has never been a game where the voice acting was this good . The world building is deep and intriguing you felt like you knew these characters . The music was amazing I still have my CD to Defiance 😊
I use the title Rise and Fall as in, games that got really popular and then just died off or disappeared, not necessarily because of any one reason. And I completely agree that the game needs a remake or remaster for todays tech, I think it would blow peoples minds
It like Pinhead from Hellraiser says: "ANGEL TO SOME, DEMON TO OTHERS"
I almost hope there's a remake of the franchise, but I don't trust modern companies to do it justice.
same. if anything itll be a remaster first before any remake >
the answer is simple: they started working on dark prophecy, then the managers got upset because their greed was not satisfied . As a result many key people left and eventually the game was scrapped. Without a clear direction or a story they tried to do a reboot (Dead Sun) but without proper writers and so on it was not legacy of kain. Their alpha test went poorly and since moobas were all the rage the managers decided to keep just the multiplayer part. As always managers failed to udnerstand what made LOK great was the story. Without a story the moba flopped as the key audience for LOK franchise would have none of that.
Nice videos! Keep them coming!
thank you!!!
The Legacy of Kain especially The Soul Reaver Series and Defiance were so fucking good in its story gameplay and the puzzles, mines the combat.
But a very enjoyable franchise i've played in my childhood.
I wish a remake or a reboot of the whole LOK was a go for younger gamers not knowing LOK.
Soul Reaver is dope! I have to believe they will do a remaster, itll basically just be printing money and on the PS5....It owuld look so gooood
blood omen 1 was great, decent active gameplay, decent storyline that was indepth, superb voice acting and dialogue.
soul reaver and sequels were family friendly recycled versions of the original, with defiance basically going back to its roots in action and gameplay, but lacked spells or storyline... not to mention sooo much retcon.
sad what happened
Indeed! May we one day see the rise of Kain again!
This series was the best and I hope the new owners choose to do something with it even if its just remastered editions. I'd even love to see a novel series if it meant I'd get so see where the story was going and how Kain's story ends.
Dark Prophecy: ehh probably won't sell well.
Dead Sun: ehh probably won't sell well.
Nosgoth: great idea! make it free!
I fucking hate corporate decision making.
Great retrospective
Thank you so much!
Thanks for covering one of my favourite game franchises Vae Vitis!!!
Hey no problem!
@@GameStudioLore 🙂👍
Embracer group sent out a survey asking about Soul Reaver. Hopefully that leads to something new.
It could! They be testing the waters of the IPs they got
0:01 didn't you know, that stones too can lie.
It's truly sad that SquareEnix chose to continue developing the Multi-player game and end the Dead Sun single-player experience that would have actually been the successful one of the two, but greedy intentions and trying to just follow the Trends of the times back fired on them and we the true fans of the series are left to suffer! 😔

Blood Omen was the pinnacle, it was such an awesome game...Vae Victus!!

People forget Raziel and Kain were also in that Tomb Raider co ok game. I never finished it or played it much myself though.
You mentioned everything but the Hylden in Blood Omen 2 being ripped from another project, Sirens I think it was called.
I must have missed that in my research >< Thank you!
I miaa these games so much.
On Pc Skyrim has mods that lets you get the Spectral reaver blades, the Soul Reaver's normal blade, and a Raziel full armor set, and I run around The cold bleak land of Skyrim as Raziel hacking stuff apart
Hopefully soon we get an actual game
Blood omen 2 was the 1st game I fell in love with as a kid, kane was a bad@#$ and would pay highly for a revamp !
I dunno if you used revamp on purpose but I laughed lol. It would be cool if they get a new game. But it's looking slim 😭
@@GameStudioLoremaybe nothing new but rumors say somethings brewing... remasters or possibly remakes.

That would be wild! Honestly though it's a pretty good idea!
Legacy of Kain rebirth needs to happen
I honestly think it was a good thing Dead Sun never came out the writing and delivery of said writing were generic and bland and the gameplay looked like a watered down soul reaver set in an open world and its not like soul reaver was some complex game which is why i have a problem with it being simplifyed so much also the quality of Nosgoth should've warned people of the qa for this series after defiance

As awesome as BO1 is, I'm sort of glad Crystal Dynamics took the IP away from Silicon Knights. I can't imagine a sequel headed by Dennis Dyack being near as good as Soul Reaver.
So, Vorador being in BO2 came down to a lack of communication. Day 1 for the writers of BO2 should have included a quick check of which characters were alive and which weren't. If you can't do that simple thing, you shouldn't be a writer.
yeah it was a mess lol

For real! These kind of games are considered "indie" now lol, atleast I feel like they are. Everything started moving in 1 direction when publishers got 1 or 2 big games they just keep remaking =(

I’d like to see Legacy of Kain given the ‘N sanity treatment’ they could remake the games graphics and combat, whilst maintaining the original voice acting. These games always lacked time to be perfected in the development.
You mean medievil treatment
Very true! Its kinda like what they talked about with the new KOTOR which is like a remake but not. They talked about updating the combat away from its turn bases system, which is a whole other debate, I hope they don't. But they could look into something like that. Fresh mechanics on an old game
Actually Soul Reaver 2 started as Dreamcast game (there is rare footage of Aerial forge) then if i remember correctly around 4th month due to limitations of Dreamcast switched to PS2
About half a year ago there was this survey by the developers. Around 200,000-300,000 people signed up, well above the average. So it's clear: the fans want more. It may well be that something new is coming towards our way. Let's stay curious :)
Hopefully!! Thats a lot of people to ignore
I was just on another video talking about rubbing salt in the wound for talking about endings...then this pops up.
Why must the gaming gods mock me? It's my favorite all time gaming mythology, and my greatest gaming related lament is not getting a proper final chapter in Kain's legacy.
hehe my bad! Maybe one day Kain will rise from the ashes! Thanks for watching!
i never played but now i will
Perhaps one day...
Another classic example of publishers sticking their nose where they shouldn't and not giving developers the freedom to develop the game they want and then Canning the series because it didn't make the sales that they wanted because of their forced decisions.... The legacy of kain games are my favorite Series of games for their amazingly dynamic storytelling. I never quite knew why the series got canceled or why it jumped all over gameplay wise from game to game and now i know...... Man I really despise Most game publishers....
Great video. Hate the word "trope". Everything's a trope and when everything's a trope, nothing is.
Don't let TV Tropes know that.
