This is some next level heroism on Raziel's part because he knows with 100% certainty that once he becomes the Soul Reaver, hes going to be stuck there for all the endless, time-hopping mellenia until he goes completely batshit insane and nothing is left of his identity beyond his hunger for souls. There is no glory, no righteousness, no vindication, just eternal imprisonment, hunger and madness. Yet he still chooses it gladly because its the right thing to do. What an ending to such an awesome character.

Well, Kain never really tried to kill Raziel, just try to nudge him in the right direction by sufficiently motivating him. First with revenge and later with restoring the natural order.
Kain's motives are of course, not purely altruistic.

Games with thoughtful storytelling are quite rare. From the top of my mind, I recommend Planescape: Torment, Cryostasis, Chains of Satinav/Memoria, To the Moon, Metal Gear Solid, Outcast and Shadow of the Colossus.

Giving it a moment to breath would mean like a moment of silence after he dies, not before.
Mobius has been the oldest living antagonist in the entire series, I feel Kain would have taken a moment to ponder his death.

Actually I'm kinda glad he didn't pause to give him time to retort. Too many games and movies allow people to dialogue where we all know, if we get passionate, we will talk over each other even as friends. A curt "stfu" and stab is pretty good in this case.

I would argue that it's not a matter of characterization, but cinematography. You barely get a second to let his death sink in and BAM he's back in the realm of the dead, immediately saying his next line. It's just poor craftsmanship, though common for the time.

Rethinking, remodeling and sometimes adding to an old game is a good thing. Think about it that way, back in the day they couldn't work in much of the bigger ideas. But that is different today.

First game started out as a really cool Elric of Melnibone influenced dark fantasy story. And the series ended up as one of the most epic and complex fantasy stories ever told (certainly in the modern era). And funnily enough, it also lives up to that compex, huge aspect of the Elric multiverse because of all the sequels. I don't imagine anyone who worked on Blood Omen 1 could have pictured that this story would end up so high in scope. From what I've gathered, the original team itself had only planned on developing a prequel revolving around Vorador. Instead, we got a multi-era spanning, universe changing epic that introduced concepts still distinct to this series in the gaming sphere.

I think before you get there you need a game that's about building alliances, gaining heroes, and gaining intel. The question is how do you fit that much rpg into an action adventure?

I like to think that the next game would have seen Kain travel to the far past to defeat the elder god and we would gain knowledge of what the elder god truly is or Kain would return to future Nosgoth and dispatch the Elder God, restoring balance. I am satisfied with this ending since it's what we are left with, but I want 1 more game. Or a remake of blood Omen 1

A fantastic ending for a simple reason: Kain won. His goal in all of this was to change his destiny and move it to a different path.
He did.
He won, and had he seen it for himself, Pyrrhus would have lamented it all, for the price demanded by this victory could be paid in but one currency.

The heart made Kain a vampire but the heart doesn't sustain his vampire-ness. They definitely only decided this in defiance when they were tying all the threads together so it feels a little off

I just realized something. At the start of the first the purified wraithblade is still wrapped around the Reaver, but by the end of the fight it is gone. I wonder if it faded into the spectral realm. Because there is only one soul in the Soul Reaver, not two.

The wraith blade dissolved itself into Kain's wound. I believe that's what purified him. That way, Raziel wasn't really condemned to have an eternity repeating the same cycle and was able to get some closure.

Raziel's soul wasn't in the Reaver when Kain impales him. Kain was using the Blood Reaver here, having prevented Raziel's soul from entering it at the end of SR2. Raziel is still very much inside the Reaver by the end of the fight

Well, the short form is this: Raziel was raised from the dead via a piece of Kain's soul. Through all the time malarkey we is simultaneously inhabiting the soul reaver wraith blade and his own wraith body. He was able to access the hidden/abandoned vampire shrines to purify the wraith blade -- which in turn purified him and that small part of Kain's soul. So its cleansed of the 'corruption'. Vampirism in itself, is not corruption. The elder god's curse was the corruption all along. So when Raz gets eaten by the Soul Reaver this in turn returns the part of Kain's soul that is purified, which fixes Kain.
Its quite the symmetry. Old god, his wheel. Kain, the Soul Reaver, Raziel, another cycle of the soul kicked off by Kain.
The difference is this. In the Wraith world, Raziel had two choices. Remain in the underworld resenting the elder god forever, resenting Kain forever, dooming the living world to eternal cyclical stagnation and decay...
Or... Forgive Kain for throwing him in the lake of the damned, embrace mortality, sacrifice himself and purify the Scion of Balance.
He chose the exact opposite of what Kain had back in Blood Omen. And in a surprise twist, Kain even has some kind of EMPATHY here for his ...son? Creation? Not sure about the relation. Anyway. So DOUBLE symmetry.

Raziel was one of the first to be raised from death to vampirism by Kilain, making him one of Kain's sons. He was his first lieutenant and favorite son; throwing him on the Lake of the Dead kept Raziel from devolving like his brothers in the first Soul Reaver, which it's theorized Kain knew was the only way to save Raziel from that fate.

I've said this for years, this series needs a real remake. Not some crappy reimagining where they somehow shoehorn crap that is irrelevant to let it match modern politics. Not something that has a tacked on mulitplayer that is overflowing with micro transactions and the single player is only 2 hours long.
But a legitimate ground up remake. Can you imagine if they kept the voice acting, had modern/better than modern graphics, and improved the combat to be something like Dark Souls? Or something like Shadow of War? Or better? What if they mixed the combat from Soul Reaver to that? So you could still use the spear and kill foes from a distance and up close you needed to resort to dodge rolling and striking when they are vulnerable.
I've heard people say that this story wouldn't sell to people today. That it is "too complicated" but I don't think that is not the case. I think they are just too lazy and complacent to do something that isn't 100%. High 90's? Eeeeh well it could be a good game...or we could just make a looter shooter that makes money.
Sorry if this sounds bitter, it's just been a real rough year for gaming and I'm kinda fed up how execs are treating the industry lol

Legacy of Kain remakes with gameplay like Shadow of War? Oh god things I would sacrifice just to play that game. Shadow of War is my all time favorite. It was so fun but it's story nowhere near close to Legacy of Kain's story. Such a wonderful idea actually.

I think ive mentioned this before, but i remember i played this when it first came out cause i loved the first 2 soul reavers.
i think i pre ordered it.
And when i got here i cried intensely because of Raziel's death.
As a kid i could only focus on the revenge for what Kain had done to him.
Thats all i cared about.
Decades later i can appreciate the outcome. I wish the series would have continued for one or two more games.
