      @@Deathstarke yeah when it came out on PS2 I had an old controller. You best believe I went and got a new one when mine started messing up a quarter of the way through. Hard to pull off combos when the sticks dont sit in neutral position and you're constantly having to over correct when doing air combos and trying to aim tk bolts for the puzzles. Soo frustrating...

    This series was WAY ahead of its time. In fact - it may have even been too ahead of its time, which I also feel like plays a part in why it died unfortunately. It's so funny - when I was a kid playing this game, I hardly appreciated it. Just liked it because some cool-looking protagonist was swinging around a bad-ass looking sword mounted on his arm. Now that I'm older - I can't stop watching videos of it and being in awe of how much of a master piece this series actually is.
    Should the first LOK game have been released/conceived during the ps2-era, I think it would've gotten the attention it needed. This game certainly fell through the cracks during its PS1 release and subsequently cost Eidos/Crystal Dynamics followers (as people are hesitant to jump into a series if they have not played the previous entry (or entries).
    Between the writing, voice acting, gameplay and lore this series is just AMAZING. It is incredibly ambitious as it tackles both Kain and Raziel's perspective and even tracks their personal development as characters. WHAT DEVELOPER DOES THIS TO THIS DAY? If anything - WHO DID THIS BACK DURING THE PS1-ERA? There are very few games today that strikes both the fun gameplay and rich narrative nail and years ago... the only other game I can think of that did this as well is Metal Gear Solid 1
    It's a real shame that games like Destiny can get $500M thrown at it yet the only golden-points in that game is an amazing score and tight/well-done gun controls. Imagine what these guys could have accomplished with that type of money, when they were already golden on so many things.
    Rant over. But damn, do I miss this series. I'm really hoping for a remastered version soon, if not a remake.

      It is nuts how much he cared for Raziel, who up to that moment always felt like his pawn and lacky.
      But Kain tried to teach Raziel as much as he could, they streamed through centuries of time together both searching for answers and a way to better their world but ending up seemingly at odds being played against each other. In the end, Kain was left alone and still fighting for a new future free of corruption.

  • @carlosmarco322
    @carlosmarco322 3 года назад +29

    A lot of people fail to pick up the fact Raziels purpose was to purify the corrupted balance guardians soul. Remember for Kain could not sire Vampires like his lieutenants. To create Raziel, Turel, Dumah, Rahab, Zephon, and Melchiah, Kain had to give them a portion of his soul, his corrupted soul to reanimate their bodies as vampires. With Raziels reincarnation as a reaver of souls l, it gave him the ability to re-absorb the corrupted peices of Kains souls by killing his brothers. Ariel says this to Raziel. "You must reunite what was set asunder" by reuniting the fragments of Kains soul , Raziel was able to purify himself with the spirit reaver hence returning the parts of Kains soul and purifying Kains soul. The physical manifestation of Raziel then enters the Blade now creating the true soul reaver. The physical blade and Raziels spirit, now arm the scion of balance to be able to kill the elder God and fulfill his destiny by restoring balance.

    • @Javier-il1xi
      @Javier-il1xi 4 месяца назад

      Not only that, but, ironically, Raziel makes his most free choice by sucumbing to his 'preordained' fate, entering the reaver, but fully embracing it as his own choice. Truly a hegelian move if there was one.

    I believe that what happened here is the turning point, the 3rd option, the coin landing on its edge, Kain has been hoping for - it's just not what it seems to be at the moment. Raziel, has successfully rewritten history with his selfless act, being conduit of ALL Guardians to EVER exist, and purified both himself and Kain through this sword. Elder God, or whatever that parasite chooses to call himself, is very afraid - and rightfully so - Because no matter how hard he grasped - this moment would (and WILL) come: his own destruction and demise, and thus Nosgoth to be free and healed. And none too soon. He can't run. And he can't hide.

    ok, for everyone that says "oh the story isnt finished what is wrong with the developers!!"
    The story was finished.
    It does leave the player with a few questions at the end.
    those "questions" are answered, but sometimes in a slightly confusing way, then making the player not understand, leading to questions..
    but again, the story was finished, even the dialogue said "it's the end of your journey", because this is completing everything that had happened from the very start of the series with blood omen.
    Overall, this entire series was perfect with everything. It really is a masterpiece in the gaming universe and it something that should never be forgotten. Great music, atmosphere, gameplay, mechanics, and challenge, decent visuals for the time, and the absolute best story/voice acting in any game I have every played. If a new addition to the series was made, most likely they're going to transform it into a more modern basic game, and people will complain and say the classic is better.
    I mean, sure a new addition would be cool, but at the same time I don't want them to mess up like they do with 99% of other game reboots.
    but yeah, everything is completed story-wise, I don't really see why so many people are complaining that it wasn't finished and "has no closure" or "has a massive cliffhanger".
    The only question I still have is why the hell out of every creature, did they make the elder god a friggin squid ,_,

      +RetroDeath Reviews It's not the same as BO1. Look, there isn't even any point to go into the story, BO2 - 2002 , Defiance - 2003 , LoK:DP cancelled 2004 ? If you mean to tell that they didn't know they were going to have a sequel by the time they created Defiance, I won't believe you. Some companies have more than 5 years planned ahead, I'm sure they had planned it too.

    • @RetroDeathReviews666
      @RetroDeathReviews666 8 лет назад +2

      nah, I mean they did intend to make a sequel.
      but they didn't leave it with a cliffhanger, it was concluded. maybe not entirely enough, but by what I've understood from this closing, It was finished, but the questions that the fans had that weren't understood or answered, they wanted to answer in Dark Prophecy.
      Its a real shame that it got cancelled though, I would have bought that game in a heartbeat.
      Really wish they would come back to this series instead of cancelling every damn title they tried to make after defiance, besides nosgoth.

    My story of legacy of Kain began when I was 7 years old I watched a friend play legacy of Kain Soul Reaver I still remember the first time I tried to play it I didn't understand the controls and I watch that intro like 30 times before he finally turned it off I kept asking them to start the game over and over again because that intro was amazing. I didn't get a chance to play that game again for another 15 years after that and finally I got the PS3 download in 2014 it was still as great as I remembered what is it about old games that don't age as much? Years before I got the PS3 download of Soul Reaver I found a used copy of Soul Reaver 2 on the Shelf at movie gallery before they shut down I bought it for five bucks I loved it the dialogue the characters and I was wondering to myself why didn't they continue to make more these during the PS3 era. Then I found out this year that Amy Hennig who directed the first three Uncharted games also directed Soul Reaver 1/2 and defiance I had no idea she was the director of the game until I was in my early twenties you learn new things everyday it makes you want to support that director. Too bad this series died when it did.

    When Kain realized he'd stabbed Raziel and they both proclaimed their friendship again, that hurt man! I was hoping there'd be a sequel where Raziel is free'd from the soul reaver blade, but guess we'll never know.

    • @TheRatzor
      @TheRatzor 5 лет назад +2

      Raziel was freed from the soul reaver blade, well the wraith blade as it went into kain and healed him
      physical body Raziel went into the blade, The Wraith Blade attached Raziel, (which is Raziel) went into kain
      So Raziel Soul now exists inside Kain or he ceased to exist after healing kain meaning
      he imprisoned himself and freed himself at the same time
      sadly the final game was never made.. so no more answers

      Blood Omen Kain and Defiance Elder Kain won’t run into each other as that would cause a rift of events. It wouldn’t even make sense for them to cross paths. If anything, Kain returns to the future/present to stop the Hylden from making a potential comeback, especially since Janos is alive again.

    I wonder how much a new LOK game would rack up on kickstarter. I'm willing to bet hundreds of thousands, if not millions. If all LOK fans would donate at least 5 bucks, it would be enough budget to make a new game. I would certainly donate a lot more than that.
    I would make a prequel with vampire Raziel and his struggle against a shadowy cult of hylden bent on taking down the vampires by using deception and machinations. Raziel would defeat his enemies and hylden bosses and earn evolution points which he could spend in passive and active abilities and finally he would evolve wings toward the end of the main story gaining the ability to fly anywhere on the map, uncovering all the secret locations previously unattainable. I would make it open world, similar to Skyrim, with the main story, a ton of side quests, random events and secret areas with challenging puzzles in them to unlock new combos, abilities and so on.
    Just imagine a LOK game in which you can explore all of Nosgoth in an open world environment. Also, a multiplayer with vampires vs hylden, locked in combat in various game modes, just like the frescas in the Vampire Citadel.
    THAT would be game of the year! :)

    I think the game developers choosing to make the main antagonist/Elder god the way he is, was a slight homage to H.P Lovecraft's Cthulhu and lore. Both are squid things that ruled the universe in secrecy. Epic game and story line. That ending leaves much to be answered seeing as how the Elder god hasn't truly been defeated;only stalled for a time. We shall see if they'll make another installment.

    I'm not so sure about this. While talking about his "coin dilemma" Kain was telling Raziel that he wanted to try his third option as soon as he was presented with the choice to make at the end of Blood Omen. This would indicate that he was searching for a way to "defeat destiny" this whole time and Raziel was a fitting tool

    You have to wonder where the story would go from here. The original problem started well before Kain's birth.
    I would think any real solution, were it to exist, would exist far in the past - perhaps in the origin of the Elder God.
    It's also never really addressed how much link Kain has to the pillars. As he hops into the past where other guardians exist, or into the future such that there might be a period of time that he didn't live through, where there was no guardian of the balance pillar.
    So, should Kain go into the past and ally with the Hylden before their fall - before their fight with the original vampires?
    Also have to wonder if the Elder God gains knowledge from the souls he eats. If Kain executed a long plan over time, would the people who served him inadvertently become spies that reveal all his actions to the Elder God?

    It's really no enough just have a final game made, but it has to be made right as well. The one thing that worries me is that when they decide to make, who is gonna write the end story? Amy Hennig was the brilliant mind behind all the LOK series, if she is nowhere even near the production of the last title, I'd rather leave the series without an ending at all.

    He has free will only after he was casted there, remember, he's the only one who can see Elder God, the only reason for all the suffering. I think that Kain with strange skin colour (no the clear white one but the one who is seen in the whole Soul Reaver series) can see the future and the past. When he saves Raziel from the sword it is obvious, so he must have known that Raziel would come back. I think that this Kain is as strange anomaly as wraith Raziel is, they're out of time I would say.

    I think that is a perfect ending point even if it was not necessarily meant to be the end. The knowledge that the elder god is a false one and can be defied is a good payoff and let's be honest there is no scenario where a final boss battle that kills that thing can be anything but disappointing in execution, how would you make that? Destroy his heart? Doesn't sound very interesting to play

      Well, it's a long, contrived story. The Elder God is just one of the players, maybe the most important one, but still just one of them...he did'n want the Hylden back, he just wanted the vampires gone...The Vampires are potential immortal and they do not feed his precious Wheel.

    Yes, it goes then to the BO2, where the main character is the new Kain. I think he didn't save Ariel (and save the pillars) 'cause he knew it was more to the whole problem than just the pillars. In the cutscene Corruption of Pillars he's saying to Raziel that he sees all the story and he wants to rewrite the ending. He probably knew that they were expected to fight and one of them must die but he wanted to change that, get rid of the one who wrote it this way (The Elder). The Bromance again! :-D

    Kain would have to go back in time again... at least to the era that Raziel found himself in at the beginning of SR2 (Since we don't know if he can actually go back as far as the Ancient Vampire vs. Holden era
    Only then would he be able to stop Nosgoth from falling to ruin as it is fated to do so. But... Would Kain even be able to do so on his own, without Raziel? Or would he just be following what fate and time have already laid out... And would that be in Nosgoth's best interest or The Elder God's.
    So many unanswered questions left for such an incredible franchise.

    One of the best games ever. But I have a question lore-wise. What was the Elder God's plan exactly? He didn't like the vampires after the Hylden cursed them because they wouldn't die and so couldn't feed his Wheel of Fate.Doesn't he know that if the vampires die the pillars will eventually crumble and the Hylden(who reject the Elder God by staying immortal) will return and,using the body of Janos, they will use The Mass in The Device to kill all the humans and vampire remanents.Its seems like the Elder God would have been better off not being greedy and just letting stuff play out.

    • @patrick-cw5px
      @patrick-cw5px 6 лет назад

      The elder gods plan was to prevent raziel from entering the sword and keeping raziel imprisoned in the spectral realm for eternety plus the elder god eradicated all of the ancient vampires. and kain was the one who brought the hylden since he refused the sacrafice and destroyed the pillars.

    • @serioushamster
      @serioushamster 6 лет назад

      But that's my point. If Kain did, in fact, sacrifice himself,it would have meant the end of the entire vampire species.It was explained in Defiance how without vampire guardians the pillars would eventually decay and crumble. I guess Mobies does say that the Hydlen were a minor inconvenience..I dont think him and elder god thought that far.

    I really hate how this series never got more sequels.
    We never got to find out why Raziel revived and can't actually die, nor why Kain was unable to remain dead without the heart of darkness either.
    My theory on this being that its basically the flow of time itself.
    In order to maintain the proper loop (putting Raziel into the empty Soul Reaver) both of them need to be alive.
    meaning the flow of time will literally not allow either of them to die until they complete the cycle.
    This also means that at some unknown point, for some reason, Kain is meant to lose the Soul Reaver, as it is transported back into time.
    As the stream of time will not allow this paradox.
    This entire series needs to be remade, and then get its sequels as they were planned originally.
    Gathering whoever worked on those projects to lay together whatever plans or ideas they still have, or had in memory.

    Kain did cast him there so that Raziel would wield a free will. Raziel was the only one in the whole realm whose soul wasn't bound to the Old One. Even though the octopus let him think that it isn't true. He was standing on the line between vampires and Hylden and he himself gave the prophecy new meaning. Yet I'm not sure how he came to life for the second time but I think that his origin had later something to do with sending Kain to the demon realm and his survival without heart. Hope it helps
