This game alone is the reason I excelled in reading comprehension as a kid.
Ho boy... You call that a weird transition from ISO hack and slash to third person action adventure? Imagine they turned this series into a team deathmatch online only game... Oh wait
nosgoth was fun tho
Wasn’t bad for what it was, was just a bad LoK game...
@@voxkine9385 The newer maps and Evolved vampire skins compensated for all that, in my opinion!
This will probably always stay as my favourite part of game dialogue, ever:
"Raziel:
Damn you, Kain! You are not God! This act of genocide is unconscionable!
Kain:
Conscience...? You dare speak to me of conscience? Only when you have felt the full gravity of choice should you dare to question my judgment!"
Kain: Your lifespan is but a flicker compared to the mass of doubt and remorse I have borne since Mortanius first turned me from the light! To know that the fate of the world hangs dependent upon the advisedness of my every deed! Can you even begin to conceive what action you would take in MY position?!
Raziel: I would choose integrity, Kain.
I have this entire game's dialogue committed to memory. Is that good or bad?
+Hamza Changazi So sorry fellow LoK fan but...it's "doubt and regret" not "doubt and remorse". Sorry.
also Magnus Larsso, there is no "to" between dare and question.
You guys actually read it... I saw the opening line and the rest just played instantaneously in my head :P
oh man. not too many channels talk about LoK. one of my favorites series. awesome.
really man..like people forgetting about it
Im actaully surprised you diddnt mention how amazing the soundtrack was. For each area of the game the music does an amazing job of immersing you into the world. Its always providing a eerie tone that matches the situation at hand.
In a way Raziel is like Lucifer, who in his hubris tried to surpass his lord, and for that was cast down into hell, becoming a broken angel.
Just in case you don’t know, Kain’s full of shit and didn’t throw Raziel down there because of jealousy… I hope you know why he did it
Storywise, the Legacy of Kain series is still one of my favorites.
I'll take it.
"Looks best on PC" You don't know about the Dreamcast version do you?
This series had writing and voice acting that was wonderful then, and with all the advancements we've made tech-wise, it's still hard to top. RIP Tony Jay.
The way SR ends with the same cutscene SR2 begins with,... if they remaster it they should almost just make both into 1 giant game.
(Minus some of the obvious downsides to this idea)
Holy shit i remember when games came out in those huge coffin shaped boxes, i use to had the first Tomb Raider in that format...
The Suffering Series. I think the first has an awesome story and bosses, but going back to it you can see how limited it is. I hope they make a game in a similar vein as The Suffering sometime soon.
Jack Balcnion oh yeah, I loved those 2 games
Needs a remake. But that will never happen.
Agree. I wish they would remake the game where Raziel fights all his Brothers and not just some. In addition, they need to make the combat a little more interesting and add some new types of puzzles and take away a few block puzzles. I would also change the end to close the series where Raziel actually kills Kain and restores balance to the pillars and Nosgoth. That would require a lot of rewriting and it would cut out the sequels but they were mostly contrived convoluted trash that drove the series into the ground anyway.
@@jspro100 greetings! Yeah, Legacy of Kain is a great series. Actually, you fight the majority of Raziel brothers in Soul Reaver. Turel, on the contrary, was introduced in the last installment of the series (Legacy of Kain: Defiance). If you have the opportunity to play Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance, do it. They're awesome!
Good video mithis
easily one of the best game on the ps1
not at all
Absolutely. Easily in the top 10 games of PS1
It may interest you to look into the Original Ending for Soul Reaver, Mathas. It was considerably more _conclusive._ All that survives of that ending in-game is some of the visions Raziel has in the final area.
And in answer to your question, Shadowman. The controls seem to be in competition with the camera??
One of my favorite things is you could play this game from start to finish with one loading screen to start up
The thing I appreciate the most about these games is that the dialouge is written exactly like a stage/theatre drama. It just shows and fits the whole atmosphere so well. The voice acting makes it perfect.
(that said FUCK the box puzzles)
Love the spectral realm/pyhsical realm puzzles tho.
God...damn they need to remake this game
originally soul reaver 1 was going to end with raziel killing kain. it had tons of cut content never used but has been leaked featuring new bosses more story and i even heard a new power. so in order to meet the games deadline and to try to make some sense for the next game (which was not planned at the start of development) they made the ending the way they did.
Why has time forgotten my dearest Raziel, great video man, not many people talk about this amazing series anymore
*Looks at Calendar. Rips out a few pages.* Oh Boy, lookit that! Back-to-Back Legacy of Kaine Marathon! Whooooo!
Alright, bring on the Third Channel, DetectiveMathas! Dedicated to finding the truth, so we can be confused even more!
My game that I remember fondly, but have found myself disappointed with would probably be Fallout 3. It's been absolute ages since I've played it...I mean, hell, it's practically impossible to play on a modern PC! Combine that with it's dated graphics and clunky systems, and the game can leave a lot to be desired. (I'm looking at you, lack of true iron-sights.) Despite all this, I still remember it quite fondly, especially as it was the game that got me into the Fallout series, which has quickly become one of my favorite series to date. (Well, maybe not quite as much with FO4 around...)
I have so many memories with this game. I saved up my lunch money, change that my parents gave me, and money from chores just to get this game for Playstation. Got it and would get so scared playing it because I was a little kid. Quit playing it cause it was just to scary and hard. I then visited my brother on a vacation trip and played it for a bit on Dreamcast (I was amazed at the differences from it and the Playstation) but didn't finish it due to time. Then when I got a PC for gaming I got it again on Steam and almost blew a gasket because the PC port is so fucking terrible. It would crash, glitch up, delete my saves and the controls sucked so bad. It almost broke me but I was determined to beat it and when I finally did beat the crappy boss fight against Kain a weigh was lifted off my shoulders and I could continue the series to part 2. All and all the lore and story was enough to keep me playing but gameplay was pretty lack luster.
man I have childhood memories with this game, I was only 8 when it came out and I remember playing a demo of it and was absolutely blown away by the fighting mechanics at the time. Once I was able to get my hands on the full copy of this game I played it days on end but hit a puzzle I couldn't solve and eventually just gave up ha ha.
These videos are always a treat
Looks like this year is your chance! You are showing up a lot on the suggested RUclips channels. I have been binge watching your videos and I hope to see you break 1 million subs!
I have been waiting for this since I started watching your channel. I loved this game, but the game was hard and tedious between boss fights. I completely agree that the lore was what made it great. The tone and setting really sells it. I also liked the puzzle solving that didn't include blocks. Finding a hidden places, getting to the next area with few hints, and the spectral shifts. It was great, but I haven't played it in years.
Xenosaga. I remember it being so good, and now it is just cool.
Yeah I had the same feelings as you. I replayed it recently and it didn't hold up in regards to gameplay but the writing is still fantastic.
Though I'd disagree with getting it on PC as it's not a good port, it's basically a PS1 port with a developer console and a 30fps cap. Unless the PC version has been modded to uncap the frame rate I'd get the Dreamcast version or emulate the Dreamcast version. The Dreamcast version has higher quality models and the frame rate does hit 60fps often enough though there are a few areas it dips bit not too much.
-TriP- well the PC version came out a month after the PS1 and the PC version was pretty much the PS1 version, 30fps cap, same models etc but you had access to the developer console.
The Dreamcast version was more than just a straight port. The models improved mainly for Raziel and Kane and the frame rate was improved along with resolution.
It doesn't make a lot of sense to judge a game made 19 years ago for not playing like an action platformer from 2018?
pious83 not what I said though. I just remembered it playing better than I remember that's all.
+fossilfern It did. In context with it's contemporaries. The early Tomb Raiders etc
pious83 yeah if we're talking early Tomb Raiders it was well better. To honest I only liked the first two Tomb Raiders.
Can you please do Jedi outcast? It’s one of my favourite games of all time.
I plan on it!
What a dream finding this, who of those games I remember fondly like no other.
Btw: There is a TON of interesting history on Soul Reaver development. The ending wasn't at all planned and the writer did an AMAZING job in Soul Reaver 2 to carry the story in a way it wasn't at all supposed to go. There was a bunch of cut content, haven't heard the theory that it wasn't supposed to be Legacy of Kain originally, but it sure had its troubles in development nontheless.
Yeah. You get to the end of Soul Reaver and you're hard pressed not to go "WTF MAN?!"
Kinda-disappointing old-school games? Rather than naming a single game, I'll go with a generic description: most cartoon / comic book adaptations on the Commodore 64. I LOVED these back when I was a kid - even if the gameplay itself was piss poor and had little to do with the source material, there was something magical about being able to control a box of pixels that vaguely resembled your favorite heroes. Aside from a select few true classics, however, even most of my absolute childhood favorites are rather lackluster, even by that era's standards. G.I.Joe, Transformers, Yogi Bear, Centurions, He-Man, Top Cat, Wacky Races... while even just listening to the in-game music fills me with nostalgia, and I can still appreciate their (few) strong points, I can hardly imagine child-me playing them if it was not for their titular heroes. They are not necessarily bad, per se (at least not all of them lol), just... nothing special.
Still love this series. Shame it currently has nothing in development. Would be awesome to see Amy Hennig back on the series, especially given how she was ousted from both Uncharted and her Star Wars game.
Yes at last someone who talk about soul reaver back in the day it blew me away we definitely need a remaque or a sequel all the legacy of kain franchise should come back.
I liked the box puzzles. They were highly challenging. The combat was good too.
I have the original CD for the PC version since my childhood and I must say I enjoyed everything but the control scheme. Still, got used to it enough so that I could beat the game.
Soul Reaver originally stemmed from early concept work on something Crystal Dynamics called Shifter, although it was converted over into an LoK sequel so early on that I doubt that had much to do with the corrupted religion analogies. That's kind of just the sort of subject matter they liked to tackle with LoK.
The original PSX version was also quite a technical marvel, it pushed the PSX to its limits and was actually one of the very first games to use realtime streaming from the disc to continue loading texture and level data to avoid the interruption of loading screens during gameplay. A technique that's pretty ubiquitous since.
I would have liked to hear the whole Jesus/Judas fight, but I think it's supposed to be a God/Lucifer parallel inspired by Paradise Lost. 😄 Raziel is the fallen angel who was betrayed by his god.
The dreamcast version looks really good
If they had had the ending they wanted for this... We would have never had SR2 and Defiance. So, I don't hate that "to be continued" ending.
A game I know nothing about, reviewed by a critic I've never heard of? Sounds good to me!
Toy Story 2 and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command I played obsessively as a kid. They're... ok now... I guess.
Banjo-Kazooie and Ratchet & Clank are far better alternatives, though.
HOLY SHIT is that Blood & Magic on your shelf?! Damn!
I'm a simple person... I see Legacy of Kain, I click.
End question: Gotta be Legend of Alan' Dar. That game was so sick as a kid, I still have fond memories of it, but damn it was clunky.
I found Soul Reaver 1 to be the best because of the fact it had boss fights and places to explore , though I loved Soul Reaver 2 and the story was superb no boss fights well until the end and it was a lack luster boss fight at that
Parasite Eve was my favorite!
I think the voice acting really sold the story on The Legacy of Kain Series. Some of my favorite lore by far.
The thing about this game is that you have to judge it in the context on gaming back then. Judging it for nowadays standards is a bit unfair. But I felt the same as you when I played it a few years after
I believe we are close in age, Mathas, and I remember being a huge fan of Soul Reaver. I loved the look of Raziel and thought he looked really cool. I think I might stick with the memories of the game though, as I believe you when you say it might not be as good as I remember :P
Man! I love this game.
If blood omen was like a mature early legend of Zelda, then wouldn't soul reaver be Ocarina of Time?
I agree with almost every point here. Block puzzles really are a chore after a while... The best of the series (including Blood Omen 1/2 and Defiance) is IMO Soul Reaver 2, that game is A M A Z I N G.
Kain is meant to be Kane of biblical fame, the first murderer, raziel is more like Abel Kane’s brother. That is as close as it gets to the bible.
Crusader: No remorse. I see you have it too. A modern day remake would be amazing.
I think every LoK fan agrees the game play is ok at best but the story is where it’s at
This game is cryptic af.
I feel like the review is fair and I agree that the combat is weak and the block puzzles are repetitive and ridiculously easy. However, I would still say that this is a classic game because the great story, great music, dark gothic atmosphere and psychedelic visuals overcome its faults.
For me, legacy of Kain was never about the gameplay. That was always its’ biggest “flaw” imo, but it wasn’t outright bad.
For me, the whole series was about the story and the amazing voice acting.
I LOVED jade empire when I was a kid. I beat it 3 times back to back. I then didn't play it for 12 years but remember it fondly. I played through it again recently and I found I hated every single thing about it. I hated the story, I hated the combat, I hated the linearity of it, I hated the quests, I hated the characters, I hated the morality system. It was guilty of all the worst aspects of bio-ware games these days and I wonder now if Bioware was always like that, but no one noticed because KOTOR and Mass Effect were exceptions rather than the norm.
Raziel is a fuckin cool lookin character, fair dues
Before the intro I was waiting for Mathas to scratch his neck from withdrawl
wew, and i just reviewed myself, nice work!
Xenogears felt way different when I was 13 from when I was 27. Its strengths are also story and world building. And it still feels pretty great, but not as great.
Excellent. Well worth the wait. Loved the noire bit.
I had an import copy of the Ranma 1/2 fighting game for ps1. I loved it at the time, played the heck out of it, went back and played it with my ps3 a few years ago. Man, it did not age well for fighting game mechanics. Very slow and clunky.
I can think of quite a few childhood games I was disappointed with when I returned to them. Sonic Heroes, Spyro A Hero's Tail, Sonic The Fighters, Ocarina Of Time (the game has aged catastrophically, get over it), and the Game Gear Sonic games. Notice how most of them are Sonic games.
lordpyromon yeah ocarina is poor today, but majoras mask is still good, and the 3ds remakes were better and improved to be more streamlined. But preach about ocarina, not enough people take off the rose tinted glasses, oh but regardless of nostalgia, paper mario 64 was real good.
I only ever played soul reaver 2 and legacy of Kain Defiance so can’t comment on the other games but I felt that the gameplay came second to what was admittedly a interesting narrative with great voice acting
Fantastic intro dude!
It's really a good game though. I loved it too mainly because of the story I never officially played soul reaver 2 but the rest of the legacy of Kain games I played if not beat.
Ome of my favorite game on the PS1. I still got my original copy...Awesome review!
Love your videos, I believe I played a small bit of soul reaver 2 as kid (it came as a demo in one of our games which I cant remember now) but I thought the game was so cool I burned that demo....also one of my childhood games that I thought was so cool...... I was super obsessed with the characters too , it was gunstar superheroes....its honestly just an average game (but I had a stupid crush on one of the characters which was Green ;-;he was so cute)
I waited so long for this, just glad you delivered and the idea didn't get shelved.
Soul Reaver 1 is a gameplay chore and the story isn't quite fleshed out. However, Soul Reaver 2 still blows my mind and in that way I forgive the first one its flaws.
this game seems so much like Darksiders, maybe not the gameplay but all of the theming
Raziel Milky yeah I would imagine so
Joe Mad, Darksiders creator and artist, even drew Raziel for a PSM cover way back. Darksiders was definitely inspired my the LoK series.
This is the one thst got me into the legacy of kain.
Hey Mathas, FYI, you're super good at this.
Thanks man!
Dude Soul Reaver was my intro to the series. I wish they were more like this game because the game after this one was pretty bad. Js.
Slaate Plays Soul Reaver 2 or Blood Omen 2?
I bought this game just last week and it's good better than ocarina if time
Is it just me, or does he remind you guys of a young Mark Hamill?
To answer this episodes question; for me it would be the original Half-Life. I remember it being the biggest leap in FPSes since the original Doom, and upon replaying it has mediocre combat, some REALLY obnoxious areas, and the last area is shit. Game is still good... but I don't get the enjoyment out of it I used to. Hl2 has aged better IMHO.
This series was my childhood.
...
I had a fucked up childhood, admittedly.
When are you going to review Ultima 8?
Have you played shenmue? That game and legacy of kain defiance is my teenagehood
I plan on it!
+mathasgames little nemo and the dream world for NES. I loved that game but its so much harder then i remember. But amazing all the same
As far as going back to a game I loved as a kid and being disappointed, the one that springs to mind first, since I played it semi-recently is Def Jam: Vendetta, loved the hell out of it as a kid but it's janky as fuck and just straight up unfair at a lot of points. Soundtrack is still fantastic though.
Sorry to hear about your video getting demonitized over user of the term "block sized hole" but it was a nice video anyways :P
Finally!!!
Hello dear Playstation fans! Did they maybe by any chance put trophies for this PS gem?!?
Btw. is it even possible with classics games? Thank you.
Beautiful voices and story. But the camera was and still is garbage :D
Finally
PS1 obsolete in 1999? Hmmz.
Tomatoes are vegetables.
james dickens Aaaaand incorrect.
I agree , the gameplay doesn't match up with the amazing dialog, it should've been better or at least close , that's the only downside of LOK series in my opinion
People went on and on about how great the game was. Storywise, maybe. But, overall, the game was God-awful. I absolutely HATED this game. Seriously. I consider SR2 way better in every way, tbh. While I still own the game, I don't bother playing it when I do another playthrough of the LOK series. I agree that it'd be nice if they remade this series again for modern day consoles. Maybe replace the block puzzles with something worth playing through. Anyhoo, if I recommended the series to newbies, I'd say avoid this one at all costs. Not worth it except for story.
If you want a great podcast with the point of view from game developers on this game check out Dev Game Club.
Feel free to spoil them game dude I’d rather get the plot summary if you’re doing the next one anyway!
But same dude, I remembered soul reaver being amazing and tried it somewhat recently and it was pretty jarring
Fallout 2 is my fav.
I remember liking this edgy shit when I was young.
ProjectiluvOP This shit ain’t “edgy” it’s just classically gothic. Edgy is mallgoth, buttrock, Shadow the Hedgehog bullshit. If any LoK is “edgy” it’s Blood Omen 2.
Only six hundred and two likes? Wtf?
