Excellent experiment! The ETM-001 omnidirectional, in my opinion, was the best mic to use. The sound volume and voice quality was the best. Although, his voice did come across quite a bit louder with it than yours and than on the other mics. Your voice sounded best with the omnidirectional. Your voice didn't come across as loud or as clearly with the Saramonic or no external mic. His voice was less loud with the Saramonic and no mic. I was going to buy the Saramonic for my set up, but I have changed my mind because of this vid. I definitely go with the omnidirectional now. Thank you.

I do use my binaural OKMIIrock mike for this. this is a 2 way (left-right) splitted mike and needs a mount from 13 cm in between to be the ears of a human. Result is crazy 3D stereo-surround sound. check soundman.de for info on how it works, or find my concertclips/Blu-ray on my channel.
I recently started using the GoPro hero 7 black as my my main vlogger. My mic adapter and Ulanzi case have just arrived so I'm only missing a mic. This was more helpful than you guys will ever know. I appreciate this
You to are the only folks that use this mic the right way. I have one and only use it for environment sounds. Works amazing built like a tank. Cheers from Northern California.
Note that the Hero 7 has another option to consider with the built-in mics. The ProTune settings include three mic options: Auto, Wind, and Stereo. Some say that the Auto mode favors the Wind setting, so you can get mixed results with Auto. If there's no wind or if you have a WindSlayer wind sock or something similar to cover all of the Hero 7's built-in mics, the GoPro Stereo mode *can* be a huge improvement over the Auto or Wind modes. It's important to remember that no single mic or setting will work best in all situations, so having a couple different mics and being aware of the ProTune settings will give you options for almost any situation.
Interesting, thanks for the tip! We also noticed recently that there are raw audio settings on the Hero 7 and 8 that generate separate WAV files that are higher quality than what comes out of the GoPro. Haven't heard of the wind sock, but will check that out.
GoPro 7 black has 3 internal microphones -- just drill out the GoPro Case to expose the 3 internal microphones and use a foam windscreen -- your sound will be amazing -- true
I fly an open cockpit powered parachute aircraft. Sometimes I use a Gopro 7 black on a head strap. I fly at a BLAZING 30 mph. Looking for a suitable external mic to plug into the Gopro. I want to narrate the flight while minimizing the engine noise (engine sits behind the pilot and passenger). Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
For vlogging you don't want to hear any ambient noise so omnidirectional mics are out. Vlogging requires a cardioid (unidirectional) mic pointed towards the source of the sound. If you're vlogging together, a handheld mic works best.
Your videos are freaking awesome. Question... can I use a mic splitter into the GoPro mic adapter, so I can utilize two lava mics to conduct an interview? I can't afford a wireless lava set yet, so I was going to go with the wired ones. What would you advise?
Yes, we have successfully used a splitter with the GoPro mic adapter and it worked well. Just be sure to test it out ahead of time as some splitters can cause a lot of noise.
Fair enough. The Saramonic indeed is better in that it can be pointed in any direction. We prefer the omnidirectional when there are two of us to make sure we can both be recorded.
The mike that you show at 2:02 I would not recommend. I get a clicking sound on all the video I take with my GoPro Hero 7 black. I contacted the manufacturer and they sent me another one. That leaves a clicking sound on my audio too. Tried everything to try to solve the issue but no luck.
Thanks for sharing this video. I just got the GoPro Hero 7 Black and got the Rode VideoMicro. It makes that setup a bit larger than the standard GoPro without the mic but it does improve the sound. The mics that you tested both sound good for their size. I appreciate your insights. 👍
Interesting video guys! I have the Saramonic with GoPro 7, but the foam muff is not very effective, lots of wind rumble. Do you find the furry wind muff better? And if so where can you get one to fit the Saramonic??? All I can find online are smaller ones for Lav mics and just the foam muff for Saramonic?. Cheers

Good Review .... Can we extended cable with this mic to put inside helmet setup for motovlogging ? I just wanted this saramonic mic to be settled in the helmet before buying i wanted to confirm that if i use a small estension cable with gopro hero 7 black will it work ? Thanks in advance
You definitely need a mic for the hero 7 black. I like the first mic you tested so all I need now is the mic adapter, which I did see was in stock on go pro website.
We've heard mixed reviews about using non-GoPro USB-C dongles. The consensus seems to be that GoPro did something proprietary in that mic adapter so it is the only one that will work reliably.
Hello Guys, I got my kit with external mic Saramonic XM1 and Iam really disappointed because the quality of sound is not good. Using GP7 and when I walk with camera on tripod I hear so much handling noise and vibration , it is no smooth. Any suggestion please ?
That doesn't sound right. We don't have noise or vibration when using the Saramonic. I'd double check to make sure that the mic isn't being disturbed by parts of your setup, and maybe add a wind muff. We use the mic by itself with no special settings, and find it to work just fine.
So in my sport, the GoPro 7 mic has become a real problem to solve. What do you suggest for a mic for the 7 that works with lots of noise. Check out my YT and see what I am using it for and give me your thoughts. Thanks!!!
If you want the best possible sound, the Rode Video Micro is your best bet, although it's considerably bigger. The Saramonic is a close second if you want to keep it compact. The ability to bend it in certain direction helps isolate sounds and minimize background noise.

Hmmm...it is hard to say what the problem is. We use that exact setup on the Hero 7 and haven't had trouble. Maybe one of the parts (the microphone?) is defective?
This wireless mic will help a lot. The Saramonic and Edutige mics are also great - smaller and cheaper. kit.com/GeminiConnect/best-mic-for-gopro-vlogging
Yes, we have to admit that the GoPro sounds great without a mic, but there are times when an external mic could be beneficial. Worth testing it for yourself to see what works for you. Thanks for watching!
No, it doesn't affect the file size. If you choose to record RAW audio, that adds an extra audio file that can take up more space on your memory card (we don't do this for that reason).
Thank you for replying.. i noticed that with my gopro her0 7 with external mic, the file size is a lot bigger compared to my gopro hero 8 with no mic attached..

It's surprisingly good for the price!
