I'm still learning a lot about recording audio, so if this sounds obvious, it probably is. 🙂 I think one of the best takes I got from your video is that it comes down to the type of action you're recording as to which mic works the best. The wearable mics seem to be aimed at monologues where you are talking directly TO your audience or in an interview, but in way that is detached. The camera mounted mics seem to be aimed at recording the "experience" (waterfall, race track, city street) with voice being part of the action, not a stabilized separate stream or channel. I discovered this traveling last summer with new GoPro in the raw, zero experience, and no accessories except a tripod and stick. Setting up the tripod, and then walking 6 feet away and expecting the built in mic to sound fine while I was talking to the camera was a learning experience. 🙄 I did go back and forth between your DJI and Rode wearables to see which one I thought sounded better. They do sound different, but I can't say which sounds better to me. Thanks for what you do!
You make some very excellent points here. Which mic is best really depends on what kind of filming you’ll be doing. I personally prefer the wireless mics because I mainly do walking vlogs and monologues. But if doing hardcore action of any kind or anything invoking water, your only option truly is the GoPro itself as it is the only waterproof/tough mic option. Thanks for watching!
While I recognize the media mod provides more benefits than just a microphone, I rarely use because the mic is just so sensitive. Prefer the windslayer- easier and more effective. Thanks for another excellent video!!
Great comparison. To solve the Rode Video Micro II showing up in the shot, I found that attaching the Rode to the side cold shoe (on media mode), rather than top cold shoe, you can get it out of the shot. My everyday use is the DJI Wireless. Thanks for all your help with GoPro videos!
That is a great tip and something people who use the shoes seem to forget. For example, you cannot open the media mod door completely with the Light Mod on the top shoe. It fouls the opening unless you force it. Move your light to the side shoe and the problem goes away! Simple when you think about it!
Great comparison. Thanks for taking the the time to put it together! I stopped using the Media Mod (and the audio adapter) and just use a Windslayer. Biggest issue for me is that the Media Mod doesn’t have it’s own mounting feet or screw - which makes it a hassle getting the camera out to swap batteries, resets, etc.
I hacked mine a bit... I took a spare "foot" and cut it down with a dremel so it was just the length that the media mod is wide, then I used E6000 to heavily glue to the media mod. I have the camera hanging upside down by the foot I glued on and it hangs on a lanyard around my neck. The cold shoe on the other side of the media mod has a clamp in it with a couple legs that are a bit wider than the media mod so the camera doesn't flop around when I walk. It's been working just fine and I can easily slip the camera out to swap batteries without removing it from my neck. I'd post a photo, but pretty sure youtube doesn't allow for that. If you really want to see it, I can make a short video that just has photo's of it in it and put that on my account so you can check it out. It looks silly, but it works. lol!
So far, one of the better reviews for what I was looking for. My biggest issue with my hero camera is it picks up my breathing. My nose is stuffy a lot when I'm outside and I wear my camera on my chest when recording rc vehicle videos. So, I'm a mouth breather 90% of the time when outside... and you can hear every... single... breath. 75% of my editing time is cutting out my breathing from the snippets I have left over after already editing the videos raw footage down (usually 4-5 hours of footage) to just the action shots (5-15 minutes of footage remain). Even then, there are still quite a few where I just get annoyed editing and leave it in. lol! It's flat out unbearable with just the foam thing around the camera that blocks wind. It wasn't any better with the media mod and set so it's using the forward only microphone. I've since covered up 99% of the screen of the media mod microphone with hot glue (desperate times and all) and while that muffled the general sound... you guessed it, still hear the breathing. I mean, I'm not Darth Vader or anything, but man, this is annoying! So, in the kindest way possible, I'm glad you were breathing somewhat heavy between the jogging/flipping of the camera as so far, you saved me wasting money and hours of footage on microphones I was hoping would help the issue.
I’ve been using the sennheiser mke 200 mic without the deadcat on top of the media mod and has worked simply great. Mic is really compact and with its built-in wind protection and shock mount, I’ve had no complaints when recording in windy or shaky conditions. Paired with the Zeus GoPro light and shorty, you have a killer and compact camera setup :)
as a 20yr sound engineer, the 200 was the best sounding mic. the problem with this review is the gain levels of each mic. the 200 was quieter than the others. however, if you level matched the different mics you'd find the 200 has the flattest and most natural sounding response, and for only $100?. with the others I'm already hearing which low mid frequencies I'd have to carve out to get it to sound more natural
Thanks so much for this video. I ordered the Rode Video Micro 2 about five minutes before I saw your video. I was able to quickly cancel the order and order the Sennheiser instead! You saved me a lot of trouble!
Good stuff. I feel like the media kit mic was the best, quality wise. I had not thought about using the gopro for vlogging, and had been using the gopro hero10 with media kit for car racing, and the wind screen does an excellent job at cutting out wind, even on a car, at 30-70mph.
Nice comparison. I own Rode Wireless Go 2 and I must mention that sometimes it records the audio with a poor quality. Then everything changes and records in normal quality. So I can not rely on this product and I must control every video I shoot whether it has good audio quality. I think next time I will move to DJI wireless microphone.
I came to your channel because I was researching for an action cam to buy. After watching a few videos on your channel, I cannot help but to have David of AutomotivePress' image in the back of my mind when listening to you voice. Great channel and your videos are very informative.
Hi - I enjoyed your comparisons. And, just ordered to Sennheiser MKE 200 through your affiliate link. For those who want the Rode Video 2, you can order cheap cold shoe brackets that will raise the mic high enough to not be seen on the GoPro.
Thank you very much for creating this video. Your thorough research on which microphone to purchase for GoPro has assisted me in selecting a winner. In my particular case, I preferred the DJI microphone.
I just installed some of those little tiny wispy dead cats on my Hero 12 and I’m curious to see how well it works. Honestly, the internal mics are pretty amazing and for the convenience and lack of fuss I think I will try to work with them versus an add-on, Mike. Thank you for the terrific review, I love your style!
Thank so much for doing this video. I have been using the go pro media mod and have not been happy with it. The rode go sounded so much better. Thank you again!
Sennheiser MKE 200 with my GoPro 9 with a Media Mod is my favorit. It suits very well with my style of street vlogging of out of my bag/pocket, quick shoot, put it back, and repeat like 20 plus times in one session. What I like most is that you don't always need to use a dead cat wind protection, and even with the dead cat, it is still small and compact to put in a bag, pocket or on my belt. Even put on a dead cat on it, it is still small enough. When storing the mike itself in a bag is also more carefree than, e.g. the Rode because there is no flexible parts like a shock mount like that of Rode while handling or storing. It is my favourite mike to go on a street use and street vlogging. I have Rode Wireless Go, but when on street, extra steps of switching on and off the microphone transmitter and receiver does not suit me well. BTW the Rode Wireless Go seems to work well with Insta360 One X because the receiver is so thin like the camera itself (but I again don't use it much because I prefer using my GoPro for street vlogging)
media mod + front facing mic with wind reduction off + head strap = fishing all day long ,no wind noise and with just basic EQ i get a very clear nice voice
Thanks for posting! Looks like a pretty typical day at Gene Coulon park in Renton so a great test choice for outside noise. I’m shopping for a small wireless for a very remote beach wedding shoot.
Hey Good day! I would say the Rode Video II had the best sound effect, as for which was more practical, I'd say DJI microphone wireless, and Rode Wireless. I'd choose Rode Wireless for the cost alone, and because I love how practical it seems. Thanks for the video review, you really helped me make my own mind up :)
Hi Suzi, I use the Dji Mic set up as it's so convenient with the magnetic clip, plus you can record a back up track directly through the mic. Love the fact that you can stick the receiver and transmitter back in the case to charge up whilst out and about. Love your vids! xx
Actually I was using the MediaMod for 2 years now and did the job definitely "OK". As I'm driving motorcycle wind is the biggest enemy in terms of "clear voice". Pretty hard to get that thing done. I've now switched (just arrived today) wo the DJI Mic with two receivers. Goal. Put 1 Mic in the backpack to record clear exhaust sound. Put the second mic probably somewhere in the helmet to get clear voice (not sure if I'll make that work). Also while VLogging or doing reviews the GoPro and MediaMod Mic came to their limits through distance, passing traffic or noise. So something to put directly on you seemed to be legit! That's the plan. Hope it works out. Still a pity to me: GoPro 11 USB-C not work directly with the receiver. That's 🤌 One more question probably, does the Hero 11 run more stable than the Hero 9? I've bought it as well, arrives tomorrow, If it's only somehow as instable as my Hero 9 I'll return it as defect and get the DJI Osmo Action 4. Just the one feature which really makes sense in my cases: Hindsight. Really love it as you can catch moments you would've missed otherwise and don't record too much garbage. 👌 All the best, really thankful for all your vids!
I typically use the Rode Wireless II with the Media Mod. Media Mod is a bit too sensitive and as you stated, it is directional. I also like the back audio file capability of the Rode uint. But, just so everyone is clear on this, you do have to activate the backup recording by first connecting the transmitters to a computer utilizing the Rode App. At least i did mine.
Can definitely hear the wind in the background without any external mics but isn’t that a good thing ? The winds layer definitely reduces the wind noise .
Liking that Seinheiser 200! DJI also selling the DJI Mic in a Single Mic + rec for £199 in UK, Actually the Gopro footage you shot was enough for me to decide to get the Action 3 + continue using my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Why Gopro continues to make people buy a Media Mount just for that 3.5 slot and not enable the USB C for Audio on the main unit is just a money grab.
Thank you for this review. Based on these units I would choose the DJI microphone, or your favorite, the Rode microphone. I like the idea of using a lavaler type microphone ,AND an on -camera microphone. Price is the only downside.
Thanks for this great comparison video! I recently purchased the GoPro 11, media mod, windslayer foam windscreen and other GoPro accessories. I already have a wireless mic that I use with my canon dslr camera, but thinking of getting another specifically for my GoPro. Your video will definitely help in my decision making. 🙂
Another great review. I think I"d probably go for the DJI as I like the idea of two mics incase I lose one or break one but are any of these rain or waterproof for use in the outdoors when fishing or walking in the mountains?
Question? I just bought the BOYA BOYALINK Wireless Lavalier and it does not sound good at all. All kind of noise . Any setting that could be changed to make wireless mics work better? Thanks for you reply and time. Nice mic test video
I’m surprised but after listening to the Dji mic it’s a bit too hot for me it’s clear but too sharp 😅I’m glad you tested it because it’s not my favourite sound but I love the concept and convenience 😊
Thanks for another great video. Such a great comparison. Much appreciated. Do you have any white noise with the Rode Wireless Go II? And do you think it can be a good noise blocker in the city (traffic noise) and also near natural beauties like waterfalls?
Great review and information. I am looking for an external mic but I haven't started recording enough to know which one. Your review is fantastic. Thank you
Well, I bought the Sennheiser after watching this video, but it is not working out very well. There is a constant banging sound like the cord may be hitting the camera. It's very annoying. I'm not touching anything; I'm just walking with it. I guess that's why the other mics have a suspension system. Not sure what I am going to do...
What happened to the Saramonic Blink 500 ProX B2 Professional Wireless Mic that you previously reviewed and seemed to like? Can you comment on this mic please?
i have this one 5:30 it's pretty good! Just buy a little mini ball head and then mount the mic there, problem fixed xD Some hairs might still show up sometimes depending on the lens, so you can also trim the hairs on the mic a little bit on the side of the lens. (might also need to buy a screw adapter, depends on the ball head and mic)
I always used a wind slayer when riding my dirt bike, perfect application for riding. I do have a Lavalier microphone for vloging but looking for wireless so this video is great, thanks!
I have a lot of the same gear you show in this video, and most of the time i just use the Windslayer. It easier to get on, and simple to use, LOL. Great video Suzie, thanks for sharing.
Built in mic is great with the wind sponge. It's also in Stereo which adds atmosphere into the video. Plug in mics tend to be Mono, which means the stereo ambience is lost. Can you possibly test a Stereo plug in lav or cs mounted one? Thanks.
Excellent video. I am new to GoPro and have a lot of questions. I wanted to know whether lavalier mic can be used on GoPro. I connected Fulaim but it seems not working.
I use the Rode video micro backwards just like that. I do 4K nature walks though and don't do a lot of talking, more ninja gimbal walking and tbh it works a dream for that purpose.
I am currently experimenting with doing no talking nature sound walking videos. I have the Hero 9 with the Shorty Mount like yours and Windslayer cover and i found my first video was picking up an incredible amount of noise from the mount. I think its because im inadvertently adjusting my hand in the mount too much which i can address. - Have you had these issues? If the videos work then i may be looking at alternatives such as the lapel mounted one.
awesome video and great comparison thank you. i currently use the Diety D4 with mic adapter. but looking at the Dji cause i like to walk away from the camera and for that wireless is best. love your vids. new subscriber here ✌️
The GoPro 11 Media mod is shameful and a rip off directly from GoPro IMO. Mine couldn't handle a 5-7 mph breeze without dampening the voice audio. I find myself using my 8 year old go pro with after market external mic if I want decent sound. I'm going to buy one of the other mics presented to hopefully get good sound out of my GoPro11
This was such a helpful video because I am surprised by the results!!! 😮looks like a simple shotgun mic is the best but gonna have to watch this again thanks for doing this test!! Even the wind muff thing did very well I often neglect audio out or laziness but it is so much better to have good audio it’s definitely worth the extra effort Now I gotta get in the habit to do that and nd filters too 😅
Rode Wireless Go II sounded best to my 66-year old ears, followed by the Sennheiser. I use Comica BoomX-D1 Wireless lav mic priced at a budget friendly $129. They also have a D2 system if you need 2 mics. I recently purchased the Media Mod to use with my GoPro Hero 10 Black, and the GoPro Volta. Which I hope will serve this rookie vlogger’s needs for at least until I’m as good, or almost as good, as you! 😎💜😎
I have a Hero4 and an Immortal Mics external microphone. Plugs directly into the camera. No media mods, no mic adapters... best microphone ever for GoPro. GoPro needs to eliminate this ridiculous media mod, no need to choose direction, sound is great. The poor microphone options for newer GoPro cameras is why I keep my Hero 4.
What about a WIRELESS system. . As a machinist I cannot have cables and I need the Mic on my lapel / collar so that I can be heard. . What do you recommend for a wireless system.
what mic would be best for loud environments? the internal mic is decent for recording pov drum videos, no audio peaking or any over drowning of static, but im tryna shoot for a little bit better audio just to spice up the videos a bit more
You’ve made a very helpful video. As a few others have pointed out, individual needs may vary based on vlog style. For Motovlog style, I currently use a Hero GoPro 10 with MediaMod and a Purple Panda microphone. But the DJI or Rode wireless are now on my list! Well done!
Hey Suzi, I have a confusion if you can clarify. I currently have a GoPro 11. I use it a lot during day time. We are visiting LV soon. I would like to shoot at night but fear of gopro low light disadvantage. Should I get a cheap gimbal like InkeeFalcon with GoPro. Or just get a DJI pocket 2 to complement gopro at night or in low light?
Great informative video! I'm torn between gopro and dji osmo 3. I like the fact i can use any 3rd party lavalier mic with the osmo 3. But gopro seems to be the more popular and well known of the two.
How can I connect the Volta and an external omnidirectional microphone simultaneously to the GoPro Hero 11 WITHOUT having to use the Media Mod? What do I need to do that?
Hi, I love your videos because you present the content short, precisely and significantly, to my best advantage. For my purpose, motorbiking, it is really difficult to choose the right microphone. Mediamod sucks (sorry Madam) and is bulky, the foam is workable but still too loud. Just concerning the sound quality I could like the Sennheiser MKE 200.
What did you use to mount the DJI Mic receiver to the GoPro? I have the Osmo Action 4, but when the camera is in its cage, the receiver won't fit. I have used velcro in the past, but I am always open to new ideas.
Any suggestions? I have a media mod and I have a light. Thing is, I accidently put the light backwards and am having trouble trying to take it off without breaking. Any suggestions? Thanks
Hi, realy usefull video for me. I got my GoPro 9, and wanna buy a MediaMode to set it up with Rode wireless go. But, does it recording in Stereo, Rode i mean, or just Mono. GoPro itselfs recording in Stereo. Thanks. And i like how Mediamode sounds like, its quite better then internal mics.
I have a gopro 11 hero black and I just bought the media mod. However, my gopro 11 will not allow me to select back microphone in the settings. It only uses the front microphone. Any suggestions on how to select both front and back? Thank you.
Hi Gemini, please confirm that does gopro hero 11 black overheats and shuts down automatically after 15 minutes of shooting time. I am planning to buy gopro hero 11, it would be great if you could please shed some light regards to this concern. And also suggest which memory card and the capacity, should we use with gopro hero 11
The only time I’ve seen the GoPro overheat is when shooting in 4K or 5K 60fps indoors. For me it lasts about 30 minutes before overheating. I prefer Samsung EVO 256GB cards.
This video could not be timed any better… literally shopping for wireless mics now for my Hero 11 to pair with my Videomic Go. Only other option that I was looking at was Saramonic Blink 500. Quick question: with the Rode, do you find making adjustments on the unit itself easy enough or do you have to connect it to the Connect phone app a lot to make them? If you do have to connect to the app, is it that big of an inconvenience or is it pretty easy?
Hi have a very important question. I’m interested in buying the Rode Video Micro 2 for my GoPro. Have you tried mounting it on the side cold shoe with the Foam facing forward? And if so does it still show up in frame?
The internal sounded pretty good itself. The rode wireless sounded the best! Thanks for this test!
yeah, obviously rode is the best
The internal with a little bit of mixing and foam attached is surely the best option
Sennheiser was the best but problem is the directionality
I'm still learning a lot about recording audio, so if this sounds obvious, it probably is. 🙂

Yeah what a huge pain it is to get to the SD card with the media mod ..
I’ve just done a video about sound. The windslayer came out on top 😂😂. Just goes to show.

The media mod is just an additional money grab from GoPro, there is no reason the unit itself shouldn't have a USB-C or 3.5mm input for a mic
I absolutely agree. Cheap phones have these ports. Why not the Gopro?
For me the cheap wind slayer sounded good. It’s not as directional as the others and sounded more authentic for vlog style shooting.

All the best, really thankful for all your vids!
Thanks for the video. What was your framrate and stabelisation settings. Thanks.
Thank you for this review. Based on these units I would choose the DJI microphone, or your favorite, the Rode microphone. I like the idea of using a lavaler type microphone ,AND an on -camera microphone. Price is the only downside.
Since the Hero 8, I just use the internal mics with the foam casing.
Great video as usual. Was hoping to see you test some of the newer companies to the wireless scene like Hollyland or Comica
Looks like the best quality is from the Rode and the best value for money is from the media mod. Thank you for doing this.
Every thing I want to know about most of my needs are covered by you! Very much appreciate your videos! Thanks so much
Another great review. I think I"d probably go for the DJI as I like the idea of two mics incase I lose one or break one but are any of these rain or waterproof for use in the outdoors when fishing or walking in the mountains?
So the wireless rode or dji microphone can plug directly into the gopro? No need for the gopro mic adapter?
Question? I just bought the
BOYA BOYALINK Wireless Lavalier and it does not sound good at all.
You've answered all my go pro questions love your channel thank you
Thanks for another great video. Such a great comparison. Much appreciated. Do you have any white noise with the Rode Wireless Go II? And do you think it can be a good noise blocker in the city (traffic noise) and also near natural beauties like waterfalls?
I haven’t had any white noise issues with the Rode. And yes, I think it would be great in those scenarios.
Hey, nicely done. I enjoyed the video. Thanks for the info and mic tests. Subscribed.
What happened to the Saramonic Blink 500 ProX B2 Professional Wireless Mic that you previously reviewed and seemed to like? Can you comment on this mic please?
I've tried connecting DJI MIC 2 via bluetooth to my Gopro Hero 12 black. I was unsuccessful.
i have this one 5:30 it's pretty good! Just buy a little mini ball head and then mount the mic there, problem fixed xD Some hairs might still show up sometimes depending on the lens, so you can also trim the hairs on the mic a little bit on the side of the lens. (might also need to buy a screw adapter, depends on the ball head and mic)
I think the media mod mic sounds great.👍😊
I like how for sennheiser the mic turn the wind into white noise and it s not so distracting like for other mics
I use the DJI Thanks for the video!
Built in mic is great with the wind sponge. It's also in Stereo which adds atmosphere into the video.
Plug in mics tend to be Mono, which means the stereo ambience is lost.
Can you possibly test a Stereo plug in lav or cs mounted one?
Thanks.
Oooh a plug in lav is a good idea. I usually use them with wireless mic kits, but using it standalone is a good test too.
Excellent video. I am new to GoPro and have a lot of questions. I wanted to know whether lavalier mic can be used on GoPro. I connected Fulaim but it seems not working.
I just love human being offering benefit to other human beings. Love this video.
Even the wind muff thing did very well
I often neglect audio out or laziness but it is so much better to have good audio it’s definitely worth the extra effort
Now I gotta get in the habit to do that and nd filters too 😅
Rode Wireless Go II sounded best to my 66-year old ears, followed by the Sennheiser. 😎💜😎
Are there any mics that can be attached to face person so that you can record video away from you but record your voice with good volume and quality?
I have a Hero4 and an Immortal Mics external microphone. Plugs directly into the camera. No media mods, no mic adapters... best microphone ever for GoPro. GoPro needs to eliminate this ridiculous media mod, no need to choose direction, sound is great. The poor microphone options for newer GoPro cameras is why I keep my Hero 4.
What about a WIRELESS system. . As a machinist I cannot have cables and I need the Mic on my lapel / collar so that I can be heard. . What do you recommend for a wireless system.
what mic would be best for loud environments? the internal mic is decent for recording pov drum videos, no audio peaking or any over drowning of static, but im tryna shoot for a little bit better audio just to spice up the videos a bit more
can i use the dji microphone without any other accesory or do i need like the case??
5:25 the Rode video micro 2 flipped backwards sounded crystal clear to me!
What cable are you using to connect the dji to the hero 11? In going on a trip in 4 days and really want to mimic your set up!
Hi Gemini. At 0:58 you had your camera turned 180. Which selfie stick allows you to do that?
A question! When jogging the stabilizer was not on! Was it?
You’ve made a very helpful video. As a few others have pointed out, individual needs may vary based on vlog style. For Motovlog style, I currently use a Hero GoPro 10 with MediaMod and a Purple Panda microphone. But the DJI or Rode wireless are now on my list! Well done!
Or if you update to gopro Hero 12, you can pair your cam with your Sena or Padtalk and use one miccrophone.
Just concerning the sound quality I could like the Sennheiser MKE 200.
does it need to have the creators body? or u can attach diretcly
What did you use to mount the DJI Mic receiver to the GoPro? I have the Osmo Action 4, but when the camera is in its cage, the receiver won't fit. I have used velcro in the past, but I am always open to new ideas.
Do you know if the GoPro audio voice commands will work when using the DJI mic? I have heard that the voice commands will not work?
Thanks for the comparison! For me the sound of the DJI is the best. Best regards André
It’s my current favorite all around mic ❤️
Do you have footage and sound of the media mod with the windscreen from years prior?
Great comparison. Thank You!
Will the Go pro hero 12 embed the audio from both mics onto the video recording? with regard to the DJI two transmitters?
are there any cheaper options similar to dji and rode wireless go 2?
Really helpful. Thanks so much ❤️
Windslayer until my channel can afford the Rode II.
What an excellent, informative and precise video! Many thanks.
Thank you for your time for making this video!
I wanna livestream witha gopro in the future while riding a bike and I'm still trying to think of what will be the ideal set up
Was there an upgrade to the audio with the mod on the 11? I have the 9 and when I use to Mod it sounds tinny. Ugh
