      I just bought a GoPro 10 Black in Northern Michigan. Had it as a dash cam about 20 mins and it overheated then shut down.
      It’s only about 75 degrees here but I guess in the sun on my dash…. A lot hotter. It seems ok but I’m going to try doing it without the battery inside.
      Thank you

    Professional photographer here, relatively experienced video guy, but brand new to GoPro. You’re one of the best GoPro guys I’ve seen. You have a profoundly strong grasp of understanding photography and video and I learn so much from all your videos. I just got a GoPro 12 for my bday this last month, and it’s my first. I’m loving it and getting even better results out of it from watching your videos and applying the techniques and settings you teach and recommend. I’m not using it for action, just vlogging and fun documenting of my family. My next step is to download GoPro labs and do even more fiddling.
    Love your content. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    Excellent video! As a new user of the GoPro 11, I had a lot to learn, as I upgraded from a GoPro 3 after realizing that I NEEDED video stabilization. Recently I had two problems: 1. I was surprised to see motion blur when I took video of a birthday celebration inside a restaurant, but I did have hypersmooth turned on. 2. I was using my GoPro to record my golf swing practice, and it overheated on me on a mild 70° day. Hypersmooth was also on by default even though the GoPro was mounted on a tripod. Your video took care of both of my problems!!! Thanks very much, and keep these videos coming!

    • @dontrapani7778
      @dontrapani7778 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Rowen170 No damage at all. The GoPro should be shaded if you are using it in the sun on a warm day, or else it will overheat. But turning off hypersmooth did prevent it from overheating in just a few minutes.

    Great video, thank you for putting all this information together! In terms of overheating, most of the content creators do not consider use cases where people use their action cameras not for content creation but to capture family and personal moments. In such cases there is no point capturing 1 or 2 minutes, one just wishes to capture footage continuously for 30-60 minutes. If you add on top of this that people might use their action cameras during their holidays in places where temperature might be between 20-30 degrees Celsius all day then unfortunately these cameras overheat after 10-12 minutes of continuous recording and take time to recover.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for your feedback. Sometimes a differing perspective is nice but not as a full time Dash cam! Here is an example of what I can do with my Hero8/11’s: 1 piece of AstroTurf, size approx 3x3 inches square. 2x pieces of lightweight 1/4” wood (I.E., pine) angle cut from point to approx 2-3 inches height and 6” inches length. Glued with popsicle sticks into a ramp. The ramp serves as unobtrusive cover for the GoPro. A small battery supply connected via short length of wire (USB to USB C, for example) to provide ample power continuity to the GoPro camera. The set up is placed approximately 10 feet forward of the pee wee/little league batter box. A video of all the kids when at bat is a treasure! All parents must sign to approve each child or the video, of the disapproving parents, is deleted! A keepsake video for the parents, as all kids are permitted how ever many swings to make a connect with the ball! This can be set up easily for an actual game or even just a practice session!

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  9 месяцев назад +1

      @JayandSarah Here is how I personally do this.
      First, I use the GoPro Pass-Through door which can be popped on to replace the stock door. This isn’t necessary, but is an alternative to keeping the battery door wide open which also exposes the microSD card. It’s a $20 accessory: gopro.com/en/us/shop/mounts-accessories/usb-pass-through-door/ADCOD-001.html?gad_source=1
      Second, I use this power bank from Anker: amzn.to/42sv5kO It powers the GoPro with or without a battery and it holds 20000 mAh of charge which is plenty for many hours of GoPro usage.
      That is the combo I use for time lapses, night lapses, and any time I want to power the GoPro while using it, or to give the GoPro a charge in between using it.

    • @JayandSarah
      @JayandSarah 9 месяцев назад +1

    Hey there,
    Firstly, great channel deserving of a much higher Subscriber count.
    Hopefully that happens in a short time period as i know these videos take a while to make.
    Alot of your content has been helpful to myself as i own the GoPro 11&12, and always take them both on hiking trips, along with the myriad of accessories (including the Moza Mini P Max).
    Now a question...
    You have touched on GoPro accessories in a few videos, but i don't believe you have ever mentioned the GravGrip.
    Are you aware of this fairly new US company ?
    Its essentially an hydraulic leveling device for Action Cams or Phones.
    Very simple, clever design.
    Just an internal cog and gear, rust proof, and inexpensive (especially if you're in the US, which i'm not).
    Mine arrives in a couple of days (to Australia), and i plan to use it on the Telesin 3 meter (118inch) Selfie Stick to mimic drone like shots, and in scenarios whereby a drone is not practical, like in heavily wooded areas.
    Anyhow, just thought i'd mention the product, as it has only been reviewed a handful of times on YT channels that i have seen.
    ....cheers

    Without gimbal: Force a short shutter speed by 60fps or fixed shutter eg. 1/200th, accept the noise (cause noise can be controlled well in post) and have a nice time with hypersmooth on. If thats too dark, your phone most likely has better optical stabilization and I'd switch to that if no other equip is there. Leaving 60fps on saved my life many times, eg diving, and avoided eis jitter. If you want 24fps for artsy reasons, davinci and co will all be able to generate 180°-like motion blur and interpolated 24fps anyways

      Some additional possibilities that may help:
      - Make sure you have GoPro genuine batteries.
      - Make sure you’re on the latest firmware version.
      - Turn off Hypersmooth if the camera is stationary.
      - If it is still freezing often do a factory reset and setup the camera again. Note: This will wipe out all menu settings and presets you have keyed in.
      - Make sure to format your microSD card at least once a month. Just make sure all data is backed up first off the card as it formatting the card will delete all data.

      Yes, you can do a time lapse for 8 hours. You’ll need an external power bank as the GoPro battery won’t last that long. I’ve never had the GoPro overheat during a time lapse. Time lapse is one frame every few seconds. This doesn’t generate the heat that 24, 30, 60, or 120 frames per second would generate while capturing.

    Hi!
    I need some help. I recently purchased GoPro 10 and after a few settings updates to make sure quality was great i went straight into filming my dives,filming wildlife and my travels in 5,3k 30fps (Wide View) most of my videos. I'm still a bit new to the whole GoPro scene,set up the Quik app for my video content but if i wanted to preview my footage,the files can't be played and i figured it is due to the framerate and resolution being too high.I even tried (through Quik app) drag the 5,3k to 2k-1090p to see if i could download and play it on my phone and so on but still can't play my videos.I'm utterly afraid i loose the footage and the quality becuase the videos i made really made memories. Is there anything else i can do and try?

    Ok. But i want to use a GoPro to record a wide shot of a solar eclipse event. What do you recomend?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  9 месяцев назад

      You’ll want to ensure you set your exposure based on what you want to capture. Do you want to capture the sun itself getting darker and the shadow going across the sun? If so you’ll want to use the spot meter and expose the sun with priority. If you want to show a general view of how the lighting changes in your scene while also having the sun in the frame then I recommend setting both the ISO and shutter speed to static values at the start. Then when the eclipse starts happening your GoPro isn’t showing the shutter speed or boosting the ISO to offset the decreasing brightness. Having a static exposure triangle will give real emphasis to the eclipse happening.

    So... having the proper SD affects quality? Cause I've noticed all my dashcam videos are a bit fuzzy or not as crisp as I'd like them to be on 1080p setting. Even when camera is installed outside of car. Also, I'm sure you've mentioned this before but could you share the link to a video explaining how to get rid of glare/reflections in video recordings, particularly dashcam recordings. It would be most appreciated. Many thanks!

      I take it the GoPro is doing this while you’re recording? How long are you recording continuously before it does this? Are there any messages or errors that show on the screen when it does power off?

      Yes, I recommend not letting the microSD cards get too full before formatting them (after backing up the needed data from them since formatting will erase all data). I usually format my card about once every three weeks.

      It would be hard to say for certain but that is a good sign. If you bought it direct from a major retailer it should be genuine.

    Wierd, the inly cards ive ever lost footage on, and many times has been the exact one you spoke of, too many corrupted file occurances, but i switched to PNY and its been many years and hundreds of efits with zero issues. Ive always wondered why this was the case but perhaps its just luck of the draw. Great videos btw.

    Electronic image stabilization was never the best way of doing things but is definitely the cheapest which is why it is common in consumer grade cameras like GoPro.

      Shade the camera from direct sun and if possible make sure it has ventilation. Even put a fan on it if possible. If that doesn't work then remove the camera battery and power it from a external battery via a cable. Leaving the battery door off is even better because the camera gets more ventilation inside to keep it cool.
      Obviously if you have the door off or even if you use the door with the hole in it for the cable, the camera is not water resistant anymore.
