i think that the real purpose for this EP was early insurance that they wouldn't get locked into the whole elegant vibe. like it's a concept that works for them and that they're really good at, but it's always a good idea to make sure you don't get pigeonholed into a single concept too early. like i wouldn't be surprised if they went back to the elegant concept or something closer to it in the next comeback, but this EP in particular really feels like them making sure they have the space to pivot if they have to or if the girls want to, and in that sense it really worked.

      I totally agree.
Twice did cute for years and then people were upset when they switched concept to something more mature (even though it makes sense because the members literally grew up).
IVE is making sure the same thing doesn’t happen to them down the line. They’ve proven their versatility and willingness to try new things, and now they don’t have to worry about any experimentation they want to do in the future feeling like it doesn’t suit them or their concept.

I truly believe that Ive is one of the best groups in kpop industry but also one of the most hated with not reason. In this album they express themselves to concepts that people told they can't do it as an answer. First song Either way they aren't trying to be beautiful because a lot of people told that their success is because their beauty and they gave us a sad image as an answer. Second song Off the record is a song that they tried to make us seem them like girls and that they can have concepts retro like New Jeans. Third song baddie is a song that probably is a girl crush concept that most of their heaters told they can't do a concept like this. Ive is here not for views and success only but as artist you like them or not you can't say they are bad and don't see how talented they are. This feeling want to feel that people don't love them and hurt them every day trying to shut up their mouths

I feel like it's important for IVE to try different concepts, and switch it up here and there or else fans will get bored like what happens with lots of groups. They are also at the point of their career where they can really experiment, and this ep was a breath of fresh air. Either Way is a very beautiful song, off the record is chill vibes, and baddie is very fun and catchy. The b sides are good too.

I think it's a bit unfair to compare Ive promotions with Le Sserafim or NWJs anyways. Let's not forget that even if their agency is far from being small, it's not one of the Big 3+1. So they probably don't have as much ressources as them. If we want to compare, maybe we should take a group from a company of Starship size.
Overall I agree with most of what you said. I like Baddie, it's a fun song with cats and I'm going to learn the chorus choreo so I can dance to it. Not at I am level for sure, but their purposes are entierly differents. It's pretty nice to see them experiment. People will never be happy on that matter anyways : if they always keep the same concept, they'll call them boring, and if they don't they'll call them out for it. The girls look like they're having fun while performing it so that's the most important.
My main complaint is that it's too short. I hate this trend of 2min30 songs. I wish the second part was longer. Maybe adding some sort of bridge or something. I don't know, I'm not a composer. But I definitly feel that something is missing.

i honestly love this type of music, and i also think that it fits thematically with off the record and either way. those two are more vulnerable songs and are expressing that there's more sides to them that people don't see. and then they drop baddie, a song that really doesn't feel like ive at all, but they pull off perfectly. they're essentially letting people know that their elegant luxury concept isn't all there is to them and that they wanna show that too.

  • @raspberryland_
    @raspberryland_ Год назад +34

The way people were so shocked when this was released lolll... everyone and their mamas were commenting "wow I never realized IVE can do such a concept" or "the way IVE capitalizes off of their elegant concept and now they are doing something different is so new to me..." and honestly all these claims are very valid and true .. an artist can keep doing one such concept for the rest of their discography and musical identity but that would get very boring and repetitive.. an artist can truly blossom if they can experiment their music ... not everyone would be interested nor would agree or like but for the artist's sake and evolution if that makes sense, as they mature or grow so does their music and identity as a group.. I think that is definitely a healthy move going forward.. IVE is one such example.. if you compare Eleven to now.. their most recents, Either Way, Off the Record and Baddie.. the way they are all different in terms of musical instrumentations and flow and everything else a musical major would mention.. but all these songs have an 'IVE' quality plastered all over it.. like you wont mistake that song as another group's.. like it is solely an IVE song which makes it so interesting and in a good way, identifiable in the sea of other kpop groups.. another main highlight is their chemistry.. their passion and love for good quality music.. they truly are artists (and its sad that people thought of them as just moneymakers and only there for the fame bc it is SO NOT true at all.. one example is Wonyoung, who writes lyrics.. she wrote Mine, Shine with Me (both in the first full album of IVE called "I'VE IVE" and another song called OTT in their first ep called "I'VE MINE) so calling these girls untalented if thats even a word is sooo wrong for so many reasons .. if I can end this whole rant I have going is that the hate they received was completely absurd yet gave them such a strong motivation to keep going to pursue their dreams as artists and produce unique and beautiful music that fits their own style.. Baddie is like Kitsch 2.0 that got more raps, traps and accentuates a more rebellious noise compared to her sister Kitsch lol (which isnt a bad song it's just it seems a lot calmer than Baddie) overall IVE MINE as IVE's first ep mini album shares us their more darker side, they are revealing to us more of the vulnerabilities complete opposite of I AM era where they were shown as luxurious and high fashion models lol.. Dives are literally winning like we are so well-fed this year I hope IVE can continue being this good and amazing and produce such high quality music because they are honestly such a gem like nobody does it like them

I think Starship got worried about IVE getting enclosed in the "soft elegant" thing, and just did an album to deny that completely. I mean, the album is called I'VE MINE and all of the songs are diferent to IVE's usual sound, like literally stating "we have our little thing, but we won't be afraid to sway away from it, so don't get to used to the elegant style"

Yeah, this type of song is normally not the type I would like, but SOMETHING about Baddie is drawing me in. Literally, I don't know what they did with this song, I really can't put my finger on it for why I love how it sounds so much. I saw someone say it's like hypnosis, and tbh that actually makes sense! It's so hypnotizing, it's almost like it drones on, but in a good way. It's very easy to let it keep playing over and over again. I saw others say it's monotonous in a bad way, but I think it's in a good way. Just like how monochromatic can be a good look, monotonous can be a good sound if it's done right. Also the MV reminded me HEAVILY of the Ice Cream Cake MV from Red Velvet so I definitely agree with the comparison of Baddie to Red Velvet.
As far as the concept, however, I love it! The lyrics too, they're right up my alley! I saw some people saying it just looked like tweens going through their emo phase, as if that was a bad thing, but I don't personally think that's a bad thing. Honestly, Baddie is basically cringe, but I'm not the kind of person who cares about anything being cringe. If I like something, I like it, especially with music. I want more groups and idols being cringe tbh.

While I hear a lot of fans saying that members were mistreated, I feel like Gaeul and Rei, while they could have gotten more lines, still got to shine and had their moments (Gaeul is my ultimate bias)! Also, I’ve heard others complaining about Leeseo and Wonyoung being “favored by the company”, but they definitely both deserve the moments they got, and really fit the song imo. Leeseo stage presence improvement was CRAZY and I’m happy she got to show us just how much more charismatic she is! Overall, I’m really pleased with the “I’ve Mine” release, and all of the songs (and I mean all 6) were a really great addition to their discography!

Especially, after me being a kpop fan since 2018, I've listened to a lot of girlcrush before like blackpink, itzy, everglow. Baddie sounded familiar when I was expecting it to be unique.
But after watching your video about Either Way, I kinda understood why they'd released Baddie. After all those previous classy and elegant comebacks which had created a metaphorical distance between ive and the audience, they decided to show the other side of them, more-human like (?) if I can say it like that...

I know this comment is super late after this video was posted, but I do think rei and gaeul deserve more recognition as rappers because they write a majority of their raps which I don’t think a lot of people realize. Yes they are good at executing what they’re given, but from the raps that they have written for songs royal, after like, hypnosis, baddie, I am, and also helping write next page and not your girl, I feel like they deserve more recognition as rappers. I wish more people realized how good of rappers they actually are and see the effort those two put into the group.

I felt a bit dissapointed because of high expectations. You see, they've showed so much vocal improvement, esp Liz, Leeseo, Wonyoung. I hoped to get a song closer to Ariana Grande. Their posh and luxurious image kinda fits this style of music.
Also, concept-wise, in Either Way and Off The Record it seemed they've showed us their humane side, like they're humans, too.
Baddie is like "nah-uh, you thought I was humane? Got ya, I'm baddie!" Like this part I kinda like.

I agree with your review a lot, maybe not the MV part because I deeply dislike it, but the song review yes. This song is a total bop, is it generic? Yes. But is it the good kind of generic? Also yes. I saw multiple people say this should have been Itzy’s comeback, and after entertaining that thought and reading more comments, it seems like people are more surprised that this comes from IVE rather than that the song is not good.
IMO Starship is experimenting this era, I am more than sure they also know this is not trying to compete by any means with IVE’s previous main titles. I think they saw the reception fans had for Lips & Hypnosis and tried to give us Off The Record & Baddie to see what happens. Even the writer of Baddie ( the same that made ELEVEN, Blue Blood & Holy Moly ) tweeted before the release that we might not like it and that’s okay, which further tells me that they know what they are doing still.
I wish you touched on the EP too because I’d love to hear your thoughts. I absolutely love it. IMO this era feels underwhelming because of the uneventful rollout, new way of marketing and the fact that this EP misses that super strong, anthemic IVE title. If all these songs were simple b-sides, everyone would like them calling them ‘top tier’. But because they were elevated to the position of titles, people can’t help but compare to the BEASTS that the previous ones were. And ofc they don’t stand a chance. To me, all these releases have been top tier b-sides, the album overall is great, in some ways better than I’ve IVE. It’s not disappointing at all, it’s just that the titles have a heavy burden to carry for what they really are.
But again, I think Starship knows, these are the same people that made their previous work, there’s no way they didn’t know this was a risky move. What I think gave them security to try was the fact that IVE just had their biggest hit in Korea, and if there’s a time to experiment and try new stuff, it is now, because that previous success is still lingering with I AM still top 10 on some charts. Even if this era flopped completely ( which it isn’t at all ) they still had the hype for the next comeback. IVE will be fine, I am sure that now Starship knows what works for them and what doesn’t and the next comeback will be massive.
Baddie is a massive bop, I haven’t had this much ‘FUN’ listening to a title since After LIKE, it’s simply an earworm and while it might not stand the test of time like their previous work, it’s a fun time now. Not all music has to be timeless, momentary bops are cool too.

I like your refreshing view on this release by ive because I do also feel it wasn’t meant to be one of their best just a good tester album that would just fill dives hands with a new release until their next big comeback. But before baddie came out I always thought the song would be more choreo strong song so I find the soft choreo to be a let down a bit but this whole album really made me a fan with their whole concept and their ability to expand conceptually and musically.

Either Way is definitely my favorite and I love their other songs more but I can still jam out to this.

Yes, it's plain, cookie cutter but it bolsters the message that they will keep on going no matter how much hate they will receive. Plus it's just fun and experimental compared to how heavy OTR and Either Way feel in terms of what they are trying to deliver.

When it comes to people thinking IVE is promoted badly, I truly believe its a result - even if subconsciously - of the kpop stan desire for victim narratives. Everyone wants their fav group to be a victim in some way or another because it makes them more relatable, gives them more vulnerability and gives the fans something to complain about, which we know kpop stans love to do me included. When a group is actually promoted well for once the community doesn't know what that looks like because we're used to the virality of kpop companies mistreating/underpromoting their groups.

this comeback did what it's supposed to do, showcase new sides of ive. it being a chart topper would be the cherry on top (and either way is on her way to do that!) but regardless of what anyone says, this comeback run of theirs is still successful, it already surpassed 1.1m sales and all singles are charting in all major charts. i won't really dwell with international stats because their core fanbase is in east asia nor would i dwell with youtube views because clearly the GP is playing their songs in every other platform anyways.

I don't know if anyone reads this, but I'm gonna write it anyway. I'm a metalhead and deeply in love with the extreme side of music. My story with kpop goes back to 2010 when I first listened to Girl's Generation's Gee and Wonder Girls' Nobody with my sister. Though I kinda liked them, I remained a metalhead, my sister became a big kpop fan. I never liked or enjoyed kpop 'cause I simply couldn't get the drive I'm looking for in a musical composition out of it, like, classical music and jazz give that drive. Metal IS the drive to me. But kpop to me always seems too forced and bland with all the unnecessary beats and instrumentals and all-over-the-place flashy dances. My sister has tried many times to interest me in kpop, has alwayes introduced me to new groups from the 2nd gen all the way to the 4th, but it's just not my cup of tea. Until she suggested I listen to I AM by IVE, and I did on Spotify, and boy did I enjoy every second of it. Since then, I can't get enough of them, not one single song can I skip. They are literally the only kpop group whose music I can feel and gives me the drive I want. From the rhythm and melody to the subtle choreographies, and how they use certain concepts and elements(I don't mean things like elegance or girl crush), everything about them is in the right place. I still don't like kpop, but IVE have become one of my daily musical delights.

I can’t be the ONLY one that thinks baddie sounds like an XG song! It’s a pretty good song. Something different from IVE, it seems like they are trying to find and discover their concepts and style, this EP feels more experimental and diverse compared to IVE's previous releases. Probably their worst title track, But This song is catchy, and the concept is really cool.

  • @Jubilantia

I love baddie it has some of the most clear Sophie inspiration I've seen in kpop in a good minute, but can I just say I'm incredibly tired of how 4th gen has caused people to always associate concept with genre I feel like the idea that girl crush is one set sound is incredibly outdated I feel like us as kpop stans should start saying the songs genre rather then whatever concept it has like we can't say that 2ne1 and Wa$$up sound the same despite being in the same girl crush concept. Also I must say that the comparison to blackpink and Ive makes like no sense they are quite polar opposites when it's comes to the genres that they are, Although blackpinks music is incredibly palatable to outsiders of kpop I have to say that baddie and kitch just straight up aren't like at all and I'm saying this as a person who isn't a stan of either just a music nerd, Also I have to disagree with the sentiment that they are club songs there hasn't really been club songs in kpop since 3rd gen but then again I don't go to any clubs lmao but overall I feel like Baddie is a great step forward in kpop cause the vast majority of big kpop girl groups seem afraid to actually innovative or use genres that are less common in kpop nowadays in fear of sounding outdated and not in the nostalgia pandering way,
but all in all I'd rate baddie as a 9/10 it's my favorite title track by them so far, it's a great shake up from what they usually do and it's also has a lot of samples not commonly used in kpop like ever. Even though I disagree with the video I must say it's still really well made, Also-Also it's a rarity to find Ktubers that actually use their voice

I agree that Baddie at least for me is not the best song in the EP. I prefer more vocally driven songs and that is why I like Either Way (still makes me cry from time to time and It might be one of their best songs) but it makes perfect sense to have it as a title track. Although I would have preferred Holy Moly but I get the strategy behind it. I do think that marketing was poor in comparison to what they had done for I AM era, but I feel they are putting their resources behind the next years' comeback at the moment.
