i honestly don’t feel dramatic in saying that this is one of the best kpop songs of all time, if only for the amount of concept work and storytelling depth that’s provided through the music videos and all the accompanying content/heesoo’s youtube channel. it’s INSANE that this was chosen as their first ever comeback, but all of the risk seriously paid off
This whole time I thought Ditto was about not wasting your youth. I interpreted the girl with the camera as the average high school introvert/ loner, who wishes they had friends and imagines scenarios where they would like to do with friends such as dancing, and messing around in school but in reality, those events didn't happen.
And it still can be! There’s no definitive meaning behind the video, and that’s the beauty of it. That’s what makes it art! All the different meanings this video can make you think of, kinda like a visual novel. It’s truly incredible.
This song flipped K-pop on its head, changed the way groups tell stories in music videos, created one of the most aesthetic mvs, had amazing vocals and songwriting, had a fresh concept and everyone moved on from it to fast
To say they can't sing isn't true. The way they control their vocals is amazing. Singing isn't just about high notes, or sounding extremely powerful (although those are things that should be worked on), but it's also about being able to convey emotion through your voice. I don't understand Korean at all, but I when I listen to Ditto and to the member's vocals, I get a sense of longing and sadness. Yet at the same time, I also get a sense of hope.@@vixxexo6855
I can always rely on you, everglow-up, and winterosy to make the absalute best video essays. This one had me crying in the first five minutes. Well done king.
This video just confirmed that Ditto deserves to win SOTY. Aside from chart performance, the message of the song and mv is so beautiful. It’s up there with kpop masterpieces like Into The New World and Spring Day.
Ditto is genuinely my favourite newjeans' song, it's the only song from them that doesn't feel repetitive and can't be overlooped. The intro is beautiful and so is the music video, the song feels like newjeans but then again it does not, because it's so sad and so beautiful and their songs are fresh and bright. But ditto is not. I wish they and other groups try doing this again/once.
Ditto isn’t only one of my favorite new jeans songs, but it’s one of the BEST k-pop songs.. in general. I’ve never had any song hit me in the feels like Ditto, then add the videos on top of it.. just pure emotion. They do such a good job of portraying the feelings we all have had, or are currently feeling. That’s what makes them so special, they understand the moments, they feel the emotions because they themselves are going through all the same things we were/are at their age. They’re really teaching us to live in the moment, enjoy every second and just be.. YOU. This video was fantastic, as always, thank you again for all the on point commentary. You have a special way with words and portraying meaning behind every sentence.
To be honest I don't think your grief theory is incompatible with the intended representation of the fan-idol relationship. To me it feels like your interpretation of the MV is right, and at the same time this whole story could symbolize how Heeseo dwelled in this imaginary friendship with idols in order to cope with her lonely life, and then she chose to move on from this coping mechanism and grow as a person. In a way all kpop fans need to grieve this image we have of perfect idols, and instead see them just as they are, artists sharing their art. Thank you for the great video, I've been really loving your content lately!
I honestly think Ditto MVs are one of the best MVs ever in Kpop, and the best from NewJeans yet. Cool With You uses the same storytelling formula with its MVs (also has side A and B) but I personally feel like it does not has the strong emotional effects like Ditto has.
I loved your commentary and your interpretation that Heeseo is grieving and experiencing survivor’s guilt. I think that’s the beautiful thing about these MVs, there’s no right or wrong way that the viewer can interpret it because the story is vague and doesn’t directly tell you what’s happening. I hadn’t even consider that Heeseo was grieving in that sense, so hearing it from your perspective opened my mind much more and I appreciate the intricate details of Ditto even more. Keep doing what you’re doing, this is awesome
Min Hee jin is a double edged sword. A master mind behind all these, but could be very controversial figure. NJ’s incredible run of Ditto, OMG, Hype boy and Attention will be very difficult to be duplicated, even by NJ/Min Hee Jin
10:40 ooooh so that's what that grass shot is for. 😭 I LOVE that shot but never thought of it like that. That she was moving on from SURVIVOR'S GUILT. I did interpret the car accident story too, but with a few different details.
From a musical point of view this song also has a very beautiful chord progression, the synth loop sounds very ethereal because is made exclusively out of seventh chords, wich are almost “dissonant” chords often used in jazz music. I noticed that those kind of chords are used a lot in newjeans music actually. Btw you did a great job for the video! I personally feel very emotional about the MVs and watching this video got me back into the rabbit hole, I litterally got chills!
Honestly, the song and the MV both bring so many emotions back, from your first love to the loss of a loved one, the MV is able to show many people different stages of life, happy or sad. This is why Ditto is my favorite song of NewJeans, as it's a concept that can speak to everyone from any lifestyle and age.
That was beautiful. You got me feeling inspire about ny future and having me kove my past. Damn I love music, the universal language, and art so much. You got me feeling happy. Not gonna lie this video is just another reminder of why I sing and want to spread love "because it feel good". Thank you Robbie!! This was incredible. Your rock man. P.S. I'm your #1 patron, right??
musically there are many songs i prefer over it and i wouldn't really listen to it unprompted, but i feel like the lore was so beautifully done, with such gorgeous storylines, that are ultimately so tied in with new jeans' concept and their own act that its almost unbelievalble
i think, chorus and buildup wise, it was mostly pop that's catchy with some ballad elements but it evokes a different kind of feeling from other new jeans' songs, somehow a ballad aura while still being catchy and pop based
this video has no many layers and can be interpreted in many ways, and i think thats why it’s so brilliant! to this day i get emotional watching it. in reality this analysis has made me teary 🥲
I'm a kpop fan of 7-8 years and this. Ditto. Is by far the most hard hitting and hands down my favourite kpop song. 2.4k streams and still going. Still in my Ditto era after so long and I believe I'll be one for, a really really long time
I came here 9 months after and it gave me chills like first time. This is my comfort video, i was 3 years in depression and i couldn't move on because of my past mistake. I was glorifying memories, I was trapped in them. Last year I accepted that was my fault but didn't heal. For a last month I was reliving my pain, regret, sadness and I understand why I did it. It was a process it was a fight but I can say with my heard that I have moved on. This song, it's masterpiece. When I hear it I am accepting past, accepting my mistakes and remembering that I am free. Thank you for your theory, it opened my eyes and I am grateful for your work❤
Fantastic commentary! But I do want to touch upon your assumption of Ador trying to recapture the success of Ditto with Cool With You. I think the director is simply just trying to tell a different story, and he's also stated that because the song was so short, he decided to split the MV into 2 parts in order to fully flesh out the story he wants to tell with CWY.
The story’s are very different, I think ador saw how successful Ditto was, and was like “we should try to do that again”, hence the double MV’s with Cool With You.
It’s so good dude. I appreciate the way your telling us this MV theory using personal experiences and subjective perspectives that prove the power that lies within MV storytelling
Thank you for sharing insight on this song and the meaning, i love it even more now! And also çongrats on the sponsorship! Unfortunately we ktubers dont get many especially if we want to stick to things related to our channels
Ditto was actually the song that solidified me as a Bunny… as a Dive, it took me a while to warm up to NewJeans as I have just stanned a group like a few months prior lol, but during the promotions for Ditto and OMG, I just knew right away that NewJeans are a different group worth stanning and I am so glad I did.. the messages on this song were absolutely incredible.. the m/v too, and how I learned so much about what story they were trying to portray and put out just filled my heart with joy.. you can’t really find any kpop group like NewJeans right now, they have such a distinctive style, narrative, and how there isnt even a leader, nor assigned positions in the group, everyone is just treated equally… there’s just something about this group I can’t fully put my finger on, but their newest mini album, ‘Get Up’ was a great sequel, maybe not even sequel just a great secondary introduction to this group (since I wasn’t there during Attention, Hype Boy era) and just made me love them even more,, I love all the songs in their second mini album, although I wish Get up was not 30 seconds long 😭 I digress,, Ditto will forever hold a deep meaning for me and thank you Taejiu for this wonderful little video piece, you are so talented and I always look forward to what your messages will be :) great job king!
First of all, congratulations! This video is very well made and we can feel the work behind it in the thought process and realization! I liked it very much! But while I liked it, I still have some criticism to give, and this is my point of view as a viewer I don’t want you to feel attacked!! 🙏😅 To begin, your vision of the MV as a depiction of Nostalgia as the main thematic is very interesting and while I hope everyone understood that nostalgia was one of the themes addressed here watching the MV (a bit of a given with the feeling of the song and the old style camcorder), you pushed it far more making it a complementary figurative vision to the very literal theory of the car accident, and I appreciated it very much because it gave depth to a far too literal vision of a very artistic MV. And while it’s beautiful to see people appreciate a work of art with their very own interpretation of it and seeing people be impacted in different ways from it, some people overlooked way too much the complexity of this masterpiece instead of looking over it (and it was a bit frustrating (like, it’s deep because it talks about DEATH; lmao no that’s not how it works)) Regarding the video, I felt like first half of chapters were a bit too short or at least it felt rushed compared to chapter 7-10 but that’s probably because late chapters are different layers and thematics while middle chapters were elements. Personally, I feel like it would have been better to combine ch.1-2 as an intro and pure reflection of nostalgia in general and then combine ch.3-6 as the body of the video with sub chapters for elements. It’s maybe only my vision of it but I feel like it’s more readable has a solid body and very distinct chapters, but there are different ways of doing things ofc. And lastly, I liked that you still mentioned the “theory” of the parasocial relationship and the will of the author, although it’s not that surprising that they coincide because it never really was a theory but simply a proper analysis, therefore the difference with the car accident theory where people see images as factual and try to make a sense out of it by theorizing. When people analyze, they search for the author’s will not an interpretation, so it makes sense. It’s also the only interpretation that matched the song and was complementary to OMG with this one being the parasocial relationship in the idol’s side. The same goes for ‘Cool With You’ where it’s definitely a parallel of the myth of Psyche and Cupid as well as a reflection of relationships as idols, it’s an analysis! But this doesn’t invalidate at all personal interpretation because they’re parallels that people can make with their life, and how people are affected by a work of art is totally subjective but I also feel like understanding what the author wanted to convey with it is important as well most of the time. Anyway I feel like I wrote way too much! Love your videos, thank you!
I actually agree that the first couple of chapters are too short, and when I recorded them I even thought that. But a little part of me wanted to keep them like that as token snippets rather than combining them, there is definitely an alternate universe where I combined them.
hey taejiu! i was just wondering, where did the IU ''Palette'' album review go? I really loved that vid and I remember you going into depth about every song, which is something that takes a lot of effort...but it really did feel like a good sorta guide to the album.
I tend to unlist or delete video's that I don't like. I can't remember why but for whatever reason at the time, I took it down. Maybe in the future I'll remake it.
This is such an amazing video! Hearing that you have a lot of love and respect for songs like ditto and spring day, I would love to hear your thoughts on ‘one of these nights’ by red velvet. I don’t really see anyone talk about this track and I think it has a lot of thought provoking lyrics as well. Nonetheless, this was a very well done analysis.
Wtf is this story you are talking about. She imagined new jeans as her best friends The deer, sigh lookup what the young deer means in korean. It means youth

ditto came out during one of the hardest moments of my life. i was homeless living in a hotel on the 11th floor at the beach during the winter. i was with an emotionally abusive partner. i was also unmedicated despite having a list of mental conditions longer than anyone i’ve ever met. i was suicidal and hurting more than ever. every day i contemplated jumping off the balcony, leaving my two cats to fend for themselves. god only knows what would’ve happened to them. i would stay up all night crying, fighting with versions of myself, trying to convince myself to not do anything stupid. i finally hit a breaking point and attempted in the bathroom by h4nging but i got down. days later i got in my car and left. i didn’t tell my partner where i was going. i went further down the strip to where i used to go with my step family every time we’d go swimming. i was so emotional. i had just seen my dad after 4+ years of not seeing him and he was just the same: manipulative and deceitful. so much nostalgia and pain flooded my body at once. i sat out on the cold beach mid morning with a little blanket wrapped around me. i listened to music and cried. i felt so sick. i just wanted to die. i wish i could convey how i felt better. i listened to ditto among other songs before turning off my phone. i eventually went back and my partner fussed at me but i needed that break. this was a turning point in my life and i hope i never have to go back.
