    Another excellent video! Since I am pretty much a sucker for any kind of LP style of guitar, this video was really almost custom made for me! (Incidentally, the only really "Gumby" style headstock is the one that occurred on the original Gibson prototype for the unproduced Moderne model back in the '50s. Now THAT was really a "Gumbo"-like headstock!) I am constantly amazed at the vast array of really good inexpensive guitars that are available today! We had nothing like this, way back in the olden times when I used to play. We would have killed for these options in those days. This really is the Golden Era of inexpensive, relatively good guitars. It's very heartening to see it. Great video! Keep up the good work!

    Terrific video Jimmy. Nice to see them in a round up this way for comparison. I think the orange Firefly may have sounded the best to me with those hot pickups. But hard to say for sure as they all sounded good, especially for the prices.
    I have one of the green IYV guitars and unfortunately the nut is cut so bad that it just won’t stay in tune. I need to get it replaced because the pickups do sound good. I’ve been looking for a good video on replacing a guitar nut.

    That Goldtop with the soap-bar P90’s from Monoprice was the first video of yours I watched and it is my favorite. I love the p90s though. I even put them in the Monoprice Cali DLX Plus that I bought from NewEgg. I used FLEOR p90s from Amazon, they sound really nice and were very affordable. The Jagmaster kit that I bought for my daughter from GFS sounds great with GFS's alnico p90s. I upgraded to a Roller Bridge, black tusq nut and roller string trees it is a really nice playing guitar. 24" scale, really light poplar body. The ceramic p90s that came with the kit were not bad, I used one for the middle p90 in the Cali DLX. The alnicos just have more magic. It sounds an awful lot like that OS40 DLX Plus offset in the video you did that she liked. Sadly, the 3 switches in the pickguard for the upper control in the jagmaster kits is a noisy joke, just on/off switches, nothing the 3 way switch doesn't already do. I removed it after installing the alnico p90s.
    I know much more about offsets now thanks to you and my daughter as well. I wonder how different the jazzmaster pickups sound from the p90 soapbars, what is the deal with the one meg pots? Is that ear splitting or what? Also, I have spent much time pondering side brackets for pots and those weird knobs... IT CONTINUES!

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  Год назад +1

      Hi Mo…thanks for watching and commenting. Seems like you got your Cali DLX Plus tricked out. Nice…nice work on your daughters Jag as well! Glad to hear the videos here on the channel have been helpful to the both of you. Jazzmaster pickups in general are wider/thinner than soap bar P90’s with a larger/flatter magnet and different bobbins and windings. This gives them more “sheen” and “sparkle” as compared to a P90’s with a bit less mid growl…more for “Jazz” style playing and tones. This combined with 1 meg pots gives the Jazzmaster it’s unique sound. Truly appreciate your stopping in to the channel and sharing. Much thanks and “keep pickin’” 🎸👍

    The single cut with a sharper pointed end is a Florentine style, the rounder ended tip is a Venetian style. I went with an Epiphone LP Special I P90, the Guitar Center version. Workhorse of a Plain Jane LP slab. Telecaster of LP's. P90's compare quite nicely to the Humbuckers and since they're single coil, they can do the Tele Twang and Rock. Loved your rendition of La Grange (ZZ Top) on the Monoprice P90.
    I liked the original version of the Orange Firefly over the Olive Greenie. Just sounded stronger, mayibe the pickups are closer to the strings or as you indicated hotter pickups ? The IYV Greenie sounded great too. To that point I had the IYV Greenie ahead of the others, the Orange Firefly 2nd. The P90 I had ahead of the Firefly Olive Green for #3 & 4 respectively. And it was just unfair the Indio with the Dusenberg Vibrato. That really was the one I threw out of the comparison because of the Vibrato. I figured there was a reason you chose the Blackie to install the Dusenberg Vibrato on it instead of any of the other 4 ?
    What I would like to see is the Indio LP P90 vs the Indio Telecasters. I do have my Epiphone LP P90 vs the Indio Telecaster, I like the Epiphone P90's > Indio Tele single coils. The Epiphone has Alnico magnets, the Indio are ceramic magnets. Not that much difference, but the P90's have a little more in them than the Tele single coils. In that regard I''m happy I was able to find the Epiphone LP for less than an Indio. My LP was a $ 149.99 in 2019, price matched by GC to $ 129.99. Today hough, the GC LP is $ 179.99 on sale, $ 199.99 MSRP. Still a great value when comparing 2019 vs 2023 prices.

      Hi Jim..thanks so much for watching and the detailed comments! I had a Epi blackie that I could never bond with, so I gave that to my son and he enjoys it still. As far as your summation, it is pretty close to my own. Except I have the Monoprice P90 version higher up the food chain..😎
      I put the Les Trem ll on the blackie Monoprice just as a “tryout” as it gave it more play time for me. Easily removed and added to a different guitar when I change strings!!
      Thanks so much for stopping into the channel and sharing your thoughts. I will give your suggestion some serious thought for upcoming videos…much appreciated! 🎸👍

    • @jimcamp2423

      The Epiphone, I put a Bigsby B5 like Chinese Vibrato on it. I also did it with threaded inserts so it can be added or deleted with string changes. P90 LP with Vibrato, it's what made me avoid a Gretsch 5230T Electromatic Jet, also a HH LP style guitar. Anyway, the Vibrato on the Epiphone is a touchy play. I'm using the intonated saddle wrapover Lighting Bar with mixed results for tuning stability. I may have to plug & go to a TOM bridge system with roller saddles eventually. so for now the Vibrato is removed. So far, I don't have a guitar I didn't bond with, they're all tweakable, even if it needs a neck pocket shim. Off to watch your video on the Dusenberg Indio.

    I bought one of the monoprice deluxe plus lp with the flame Maple top. The guitar is flawless in construction sounds fine, but I just haven't been able to bond with it. In the advertisement on their web page it says it's a c shaped neck in my reality I feel like I'm playing a two-by-four with strings. If I had to describe it I'd call it a thick u shaped neck. In the video you describe the iyv as being the thinnest neck in the group I'm wondering if you or anyone else here could suggest something else that's on the thin side. A long time ago I played a friend's Les Paul and it was a wonderfully thin neck played beautifully and I thought I might get the same experience with this guitar and it's not even close. Every time I play it I feel like I'm wrestling a bear. Other than going to guitar center and shelling out a few thousand dollars any other brands out there that have really thin necks in the singlecut Les Paul variety? At this point I'm afraid of purchasing any more of the monoprice guitars for fear I'm going to get a thick club like neck like this one.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  Год назад +1

      Hey…thanks for watching and commenting. LP’s are usually a tad thicker than say your standard Strat or Tele style. Neck’s vary from the older 50’s style “baseball bat” (which I like) to a slimmer 60’s style C neck…I have found the IYV necks to be the slimmer of the ones I have. The exception on IYV is their “Blue” LP model which I am being told has a thicker neck than the “Greenie” or the newer 300D (Relic) model. You could try a few Epiphone’s at GC but I honestly think the FF, IYV, Monoprice play/sound just as good for much less $$. Both my Monoprice LP DLX guitars do not feel overly thick in the necks to me…they are definitely “C” shaped necks. The IYV and Firefly are slimmer. Look on EBay to see if you can find one of the “Greenie” models…ILS-300 EGN or their newer ILS-D, or go to guitarsgarden.com and look at what Firefly currently has in stock. Good luck in your quest and keep pickin’…🎸👍

      @@JimmyStewart1 Thanks for the reply. I might have a stroll into the local Sam Ash or guitar center and look at their collection of epiphone's. Last time I was in one of those places 10 years I found an epiphone SG entry-level guitar that played beautifully the guy at the store said that's a child's toy you don't want that and sat me down with a guitar that cost $1,000 more which I didn't like. Knowing what I know now I would have bought the bolt-on neck SG ripped out all the guts and put the good stuff in and I would have had a fantastic guitar. Oh well live and learn.

      Yep…just don’t let them pressure you into anything. Get a feel for the “necks” you prefer. I like a bit thicker neck myself as it gives me more room to maneuver and bend, but everyone has a preference! Again, good luck and I hope you find what your looking for at a reasonable price! 🎸👍

    As for the guitars themselves, I’d love to know your opinion, because here on my end, it’s difficult to tell, as they all sound rather similar through your amp/effects/video recording setup… Having said that, I think the IYV for some reason stands out as slightly cleaner and more balanced-sounding than the rest. I’m thinking the IYV is probably the closest to a vintage PAF kind of sound, and probably the best choice among these for playing jazz. The 66SB Goldtop with the soap-bar P90’s sounds similarly clean and balanced tonally, but also has slightly less dynamic range. The rest of the humbucker-equipped ones from Firefly and Monoprice in this comparison all sound a bit hotter and I’m guessing are probably more oriented towards heavier styles of music. If I had to pick just 1 or 2 to keep, I’d probably pick the IYV and the Monoprice soap-bar P90-equipped goldtop.

      Btw, weight-wise, none of these seem to get as heavy as LPs have been known to get! But just slightly over 7 lbs?!? That’s amazing! It’s probably the lack of a maple cap that does it, as maple is a heavier, denser wood than mahogany. Even so, I wonder what kind of mahogany is on that IYV! And it isn’t even chambered?!? That’s CRAZY lightweight for an LP-style guitar!

    • @JimmyStewart1

      I think you are right on…they all play fairly similar, however I prefer the PAF sound of the IYV along with my preferred P90’s of the DLX Plus SB. I like them all, but if I had to pick two, those would be my choices. 🎸👍

      I agree…I think less the cap(s) brings the IYV weight down. I lucked out on mine as it’s well balanced, no flaws, well setup out of the box, and the pups sound very nice! Price was certainly right as well….🎸👍

    Do any of these guitars suffer from butt dive? I understand this is often far more of a problem with Les Pauls than neck dive, especially if you’re going to be playing them sitting down. I imagine the lighter LPs will have less of this than the heavier ones.
