    Steve, I wonder if a "retractable" tailwheel would allow a higher AOA and thus shorter distance, or if you're already at stall AOA on takeoff and can't afford the extra AOA.
    Also, I'm curious if the tailwheel liftoff point defines the takeoff run, or if it's just the main wheels. If the tailwheel counts, would retracting it let you cut distance off the official takeoff run?

  • @BricoleurTV
    @BricoleurTV 3 года назад +2

    First of all, I’m not a pilot just an avid Dirtbike and snowmobile-rider / racer.
    Why do you stick with the throttle on the panel? Wouldn’t it be better to have it on the flaps-handle (or some other arrangement) so you never have to change grip…??

    • @adampuder1696
      @adampuder1696 3 года назад

      Having it on the throttle can lead to a mistake / accidentally touching it and most of the time regular pilots have more time so they can predict when you are gonna need flaps so you wouldn't need them as quickly would be my guess.

    • @BricoleurTV
      @BricoleurTV 3 года назад

      @@adampuder1696 Sounds like a reasonably good guess (but still just a guess 😀) and it seems logical to go safety first at all times when it comes to flying.
      However, this is a pro competitor, racing a quite pro plane that he tows around in a trailer from race to race. Not far from what a drag racer does with a dragster (or a tennis player with a racket)…

    • @adampuder1696
      @adampuder1696 3 года назад

      @@BricoleurTV I think it also has to deal with planes that fly by cable(also my bad I thought you were talking about flaps at first). Some older planes have the throttle on the side too, and some fighter jets it just all depends i guess.

    These stol specialist are fun to watch. The engineering and piloting skills are remarkable.
    .......but they are so specialized that they are useless for anything else. For some that's a big "well, no duh".
    Not speaking to you. Pointing out to others who don't know, these planes can't leave the pattern.
    A Just Aircraft Highlander is a great bush plane. It's capable of stol, and flying cross country. These stol competition aircraft cannot fly any meaningful distance.
    They are like top fuel dragsters, that look like cars. And yes, it bothers me.
    These competitions used to be held by bush pilots who flew their planes in, now they are dominated by planes that show up on a trailer, pulled by a truck.
    They need to have two classes. One for actual bush planes, and another for planes that burn nitro with engines turning 8000 rpm.

    • @SteveHenry
      @SteveHenry  3 года назад +3

      This is not the case with our Highlander. I fly my airplane into the backcountry of Idaho over mountains and I have flown to Oshkosh from Idaho. I have also flown to Valdez Alaska from Idaho for a stol competition. The reason we trailer the Airplane is so we can drive through weather and make these competitions. There have been too many times that weather has held us from being at the competition, so we decided to trailer. Our highlander is an excellent bush plane.

    Why don't they use gas charge shocks like the Lowrider cars have; with a powerful enough engine they can launch that plane to straight up', and probably take off in about 10 ft; kind of like a helicopter. I'll bet you'll be seeing it soon'. Think about it. That's how the birds do it.

    Watching those takeoffs makes me shudder. Each time the pilot rips the aircraft stick back EARLY, before the aircraft is ready to takeoff, the tailwheel or skid slams down HARD on the ground, thus causing SAGGING and possibly CRACKING in the airframe from behind the rear seat AFT to the tail cone.. To be blunt, the U.S. F.A.A. should require that ALL these aircraft aircraft should UNDERGO A COMPLETE AIRFRAME INSPECTION BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER EACH COMPETITION. .IE.NOBODY MOVES UNTIL INSPECTED AND CLEARED OF CRACKS. Wouldn't want an aircraft to break up in mid-air after a weekend of heavy landings or take-offs, now would you?.Should be mandatory before departure TOO and FROM a competition
