- In the last edition of this series, we looked over Dragon Ball Z's best and worst animated episode. However today, let's look over its sequel, Dragon Ball Super, and go over the names of the talented animators behind it such as Ken Otsuka, Naotoshi Shida, Futoshi Higashide, and many more!

Something I genuinely struggle to understand is how people refuse to give credit where it's due. There's this """""review""""" of DBS: Broly on YT and the best thing he had to say about its animation was "It looks pretty good...but only sometimes."
Then he proceeded to cherry pick screenshots from the fusion dance scene and showed zero actual animation from there or anywhere else IIRC. He did say he liked how the animation was more fluid than most of the anime, but you could tell he was essentially saying "It looks good by DBS standards."
Then you get people to this day who are like "Not even the animators actually cared about the animation or tried to make it look good, lol!" I think that pisses me off more than anything because one, I feel like it should be common knowledge that DBS had a horrible schedule and they 100% did their absolute best and two, it's just insulting to any and all animators in general
@@Kitsune986 Unfortunately it seems not many people know about Super's schedule, they just look at the first arcs' animation and go "yeah, everything about Super is garbage, even tho I haven't actually seen it myself or done any research into it"
Also, I have seen a lot of people around that for some reason, as you said, just wanna see pretty drawings, ignoring everything about animation; the same people that praise the anime adaptation of Record of Ragnarok, probably.
I'm not trying to be rude to these people, you like what you like and everything is subjective, but PLEASE, don't talk about "bad animation" just because an anime has unique or streamlined art (I've seen this A LOT with Tate's fusion scene in Broly and Naruto vs. Pain in Shippuden)!

Yeah people who complained about the animation were right about it being poor but some of them have went as far as saying they should be fired for it. They don't understand or don't care that dbs was incredibly rushed in the beginning.
Why not expect that? It brings in billion+ a year.
I'm hoping that they reel in One Piece and give it a small break/hiatus and then DBS comes in with the same animation style as Wano.

Yeah i hate when people think bad animation is the same as off model,and sometimes u need off model for an animation to look smooth,this guy knows what he is talking about

Dragon Ball Super managed to go from having some of the most poorly animated episodes in the beginning to having some of the best in the end of it's run is something to be respected.

Ebisawa always mad me mad when I was a kid as I didn't understand why the art style changes so much after an episode and my parents used to ask why am I sad or angry and I usually said you wont get it despite my father being an artist.
Yeah haha I'll never forget when I was first watching Z and I came to Ebisawas section in ep 51 of when Vegeta was talking to the Namekians, I was so confused as to why the art style completely changed, now I know... Although he could draw some goofy expressions which always give me a laugh so I appreciate him for that lol.

Whats weird is why they didnt just use keyframes from the movie. Boruto did that for the movie retelling in the series.

Demon Slayer also did with their recent tv series by using the animation from the movie. It would've made more sense the use it in Super given their poor scheduling.
@@mechajay3358 Demon Slayer is a different case. They simply played the movie divided into 6 episodes with a few new cuts and music.
It would have fixed the production schedule at least a little bit. Strange eh!
@@nicograms not really there was a lot of redrawn frames and animations along with the new prequel episode. It just looked pretty similar to the movies’ animation which kinda says how great the animators are

I gotta agree, even though Goku vs Jiren fight was a amazing, they overdid it with the Aura.

The auras look horrible. Just about ruins even the best animated parts for me.
16:14 It's actually amazing how much better DBS looks without the highlighting making everyone look like they're made of plastic. It's soooo much better just for this small scene. I'd have taken the whole show like this.

Good video, mad respect for including uncredited artists, supporting the unfortunately harassed staff of those early arcs and overall good flow and editing for the video.
I don't think there's ever been a moment in history when the term "lazy animation" could be applied. Terrible animation can be blamed on a lot of things, and can be called a lot of things, but show me an animator who puts out bad work because they had SO MUCH time on their hands that they just lazily doodled something at a snail's pace and then just gave up because they couldn't be arsed anymore and handed it in. There's nothing lazy about being an animator :/

Before Super was made, I thought in my head that when it began, I expect to see nothing but near movie level production for this legendary series, because if any series deserves that, it's Super. I got bruh momented.

Super is a weekly series, you can't expect it to have movie level quality animation .Super will definitely have a more healthy production and look better than before, when it returns. But if you're expecting movie level quality, sorry but the disappointment is on you.

If they already knew 90% of episodes will be subpar because of it being a weekly anime, just don't turn it into a weekly anime, simple as that, problem solved, only reason super got any streams is because it's dragonball related, unlike Z, if it was a stand-alone series it wouldn't live for long.
Movies animation is what this series deserves since it's from arguably the most influential anime ever created, and, unlike Z, super didn't influence much

How about a Dragon ball GT best and worst animated episode in the future?

@@ItsOver9000Productions mostly better than the first three arcs of DBS, hell the direction in GT in some of the episodes its some of the best in the entire franchise.
As for Animation look up the fights against baby, super 17 and some of the early episodes, especially the awakening of baby.
GT was much less animated to both Z and Super so it makes it a little difficult. That doesn't mean it is absent of any well-animated scenes, but more so it's sporadic throughout an episode rather than anything consistent like episode 279 in Z or 130 in Super.
The only action episode in GT that somewhat did was episode 24, although that's more so in the 2nd half. Episode 1 had some nice animation as well.
So no one is gonna mention the fight with baby vegeta is was pretty cool
@@forgottenrelics1197 there's always the option of doing a "best and worst animated scene in GT" or "most visually pleasing episode" though maybe with a slightly different name, just talking about direction and whatnot

My favorite UI TOP moments are when Goku flies towards Jiren face to face in a bird pose, and when Goku backflips to dodge Jiren and he's hit with a barrage of high speed attacks even though Goku's not moving.
I really feel like the auras do a disservice to the great artwork in episode 130, I would've preferred if they tone them down a bit.
Yeah and the blur at times, still an improvement though from some of the earlier episodes.
That was really an issue with that, when Vegeta new Blue form was shown, that hurt my eyes lol

Great analysis. Spot on. 130 is also my favorite animation in dbs. It's like when that fight with cell and goku was done by studio cockpit (I think it was them) and you could really see the drastic difference in quality.
Not gonna lie though, as a kid it felt like that was the quality of animation for the entire series from that point on (but hey, I was a kid so give my nostalgia a break!)

Super has, by the end, one of the best animations i ever seen, on par with the best animations i've seen on One Piece. A new anime with near flawless animation is Jujutsu Kaisen, almost everything about it is amazing

Episode 5, is when the production went downhill, so people remember that one the most, many were making videos on it, plus still to this day, I see still images from that Goku vs Beerus fight, on Instagram lol

Im very glad that dbs animation and style gradually got better as the episodes went on, and even better when the broly movie came out, comes to show you what they are capable of with enough time and budget
Im confused on how you only have over 25k subs. I think i can objectively say you are the best dragon ball youtuber.
The quality and effort you put into your videos are unmatched. You also never cut corners by posting clickbait videos or forcing videos about new content dragon ball just for views. You are a true warrior at heart.

I get a lot of supportive messages but this one really hit home. Even so, I personally don't see myself as the best, there is still a lot I would like to improve on, regardless if there are even a couple of people out there who feel that way about the channel, it makes me truly happy. I think talking about in show stuff is more popular than out of show, which is a shame because now I find the process of how the show's made to be soo fascinating.
So yea I don't think that number reflects lack of quality at all. Every one of these videos all seem really well made.

The one episode where Goku loses his powers due to overtraining, there’s a sequence where Goten lays on his lap. The animation was so bad that I almost quit watching the show.

most of DB Super episodes until Black Goku Arc felt like a final project of a secondary school
For me it was episode 122. I found myself pausing every half second just to look at the individual frames for being so good. More than the animation was the drawing itself, I only watched the whole show now and I was blown away, they actually got that rough perfection that seemed to be lost in the 90s.
I also have to admire the "remake" of red SSG, even though it's the same, the fact that it looks serious as hell (the face and eyes) makes it feel really dope
Great video and I really enjoy these animation break downs as for an artist like me it helps me understand more about the importance of shading and movements in characters when drawing.

It's insulting to to called that episode "Ebisawa-equivilent," because even his episode has more effort that shit. It's maddening why people still believe Ep.5 is worse.
Super was more watched in the very beginning, episode 5 was the start of the bad animation, that got a lot of attention and memes. By the time we got to that Frieza episode, I think a lot of people dropped the show, due to the animation, another movie retelling, plus how much worse the anime made ROF, with their changes. So it got far less hate than episode 5, despite looking much worse.

I think they are trying to do something new with the cgi that they hope people who watch Dragon Ball would like better, I still prefer the old animations but their intention was surely good

It’s mostly a passion project where Toriyama wanted to do something unique and that’s nice, but I doubt it’s going to be the series’ style going forward. Hopefully, they will choose Shintano instead of Yamamuro as the animation director and character designer for the next cour of Dragon Ball Super. I feel like his style can definitely serve the series well, if paired with what we could at least consider a decent production schedule, of course.
@@kytsunee6324 Yeah the CGI is probably only for this movie. I like Yamamuro's animation style a bit more than Shintani's personally, but it doesn't really matter aslong as it's one of them I am fine with it, both of them showed us how good they are when executed well.
its definitely better then most cgi anime in my opinion but at times it also looks kinda bad. some of it look really good but i definitely prefer hand drawn

The problem with protecting Super is. Super is 30 years after Z. DragonBall is presently one of the largest anime franchise effort.
The budget should not have been this low. The release schedule should not have been rushed.

Even the top arc was trash,all of the tension literally becomes nonexistant when 17 just wishes them all back and the main "antagonist" is as compelling as a brick wall,and the way both piccolo and krillin get wasted is extremely sad when both had their own arc and moments before the top arc,and the only good episodes being when either goku and vegeta work togethor or when goku goes UI agaisnt jiren

I love Takahashi but I prefer the Shintani style to be honest. Takahashi is a throwback to the good Yamamuro days and I think that Dragon Ball needs something new. Not to mention that Shida's level of animation is easier to pull of with simplistic designs.
@TheSoulExplorer I mean, the Yamamuro era in Z, was probably the peak of DB art, also the most iconic, his style is always replicated, when fans draw DB, it's hard not to want that back, for the series as a whole, but I can appreciate change.

I skipped the first 2 arcs to get to the stuff that wasn't retelling the movies. So I missed a lot of the terrible animation.

When (or more likely if) the Dragonball anime return later on, the animation directors better not repeat Frieza one arm spinning Goku. I just can't bare another one. 😱
I'm just a bit sad you didn't choose the episode of Goku against K&C (Episode 114 as well as the one where vegeta vs jiren happened) as the best because Takahashi as the key animator was so on point in that one. The characters looked just brilliant.

Tate and his team are my favorite animators. It kinda feels like the "more is less" thing toriyama follows. Less detail led to more dynamic action setting his team apart from the rest
You should do the original dragon balls best and worst animated episodes
Animating is very hard,I tried to Animate 7-8 seconds animation,it took me 4 hours..and I feel them
Also sometimes it makes me sad that some nature background is only shown for some seconds like they spend lots of time on that background just to be shown for some seconds..
I just wanna know why Toei wanted to start a new anime 3-4 months immediately after a movie and roughly a year and a half after the previous movie. Super coming out in 2016 would’ve saved a bit more in the quality assuming they still wanted all that merch money. Also making it’s two first arcs recaps and drawn out versions of movies we had just gotten is really odd to me but at this point it’s not uncommon for the franchise.
Part of the reason was to keep Dragon Ball Kai's timeslot which finished up the week before Supers first episode aired. So releasing in 2016 would've taken that away.
There's also the marketing/promotion tie in of dropping a new movie around the same time a new DB series has started. But personally like any other fan I would've much preferred for it to have released at a later date.

I just feel like super's animation has a few things that bother me, especially the ki blasts and the terrain, i mean i know they can't make each episode like the broly movie, but i guess i prefer the dbz old style

i really like sharp and triangular look the of dragon ball super that naotoshi shida did it makes the characters feel like there trying and i love that every thing feel more serious and aggressive with that style of drawing it's just tooo good

I've forgiven a lot of pronunciation mistakes thus far but this one was unforgivable.
one thing that i always critique about dbs in its first episodes was how they made 3 shades in the hair

maybe its just me but this use of 3 grade shading is just unappealing and over the necessary amount
although they did remove that on the newer material ( with the exception of heroes-the game promo anime) and its honestly far better than the yamamuro current plastic pallete color style
agreed I personally perfer no shade or 1 shade when the character has black hair.
2 or 3 shade look good in different hair colour.
Ngl ep 5 was pretty good, the drawings at some parts eh... but the animation or whatever was nice, and the ssj 3 transformation as very nice.

I could sense the difference when I viewed ep. 130, the animation was so good in comparison to all I had seen in the rest of the anime. Vegito's appearance also had some good animation.
Those last 3 episodes of Super looked great.

They honestly shouldn't have made super with two of the four arcs being movies, and just delayed the release with only having future and TOP arcs being high end animated, because boi was early super rough.

130 is the best animation to come from any part of the dragon ball shows
This show... I'm very incredibly mixed on.
On one hand, this show does tend to have some of the highest highs in the entire series. some of the concepts being kinda interesting, the setup to the T.O.P... aside from the "Tien Shinhan" episode, and the finale being some of the hypest shit in the entire franchise. I also appreciate it utilizing different characters and bringing them to a new light, such as Roshi, Android 17 and Freeza especially.
I also like the new characters. Beerus is really fun and almost always a treat, Zamasu and Goku Black, while I do have problems with, I still appreciate their concept that makes them more than just "evil Goku."
I also really like the intro and ending themes, some of them of are legit some of the best songs in dragon ball imo.
But on the other hand... This show is kinda garbage lmao
It has some the lowest lows.
Battle of Gods wasn't bad for an introduction to the series despite some hiccups, but Resurrection F was legitimately the WORST, and most PAINFUL anime experiences I've ever had (the animation still gives me nightmares)
Filler arcs were innoffensive at best
The Goku Black arc, while not as bad as the previous, I still think isn't that great.
The characters took a deep dive into dumbass street, Goku not being recognizable from before and for some reason most of the characters having the bright idea to go to the future not once, but 3 times all to get their asses kicked.
The way trunks learns the mafuba is convoluted, Vegito is cool but only exists for merch (he doesn't even gain Vegetas chest plate for crying out loud) and the finale is legit one of the lamest finales out there, completely wasting the characters efforts and just killing everyone, and erasing everything.
Already mentioned what I liked about the T.O.P, but I still have problems with it
The way Piccolo and Krillin were knocked out is dumb (Krillin having an entire arc wasted, and Piccolo losing against an opponent he should've been perfectly well equiped against.)
Tien was wasted, like in the rest of this dumb show (which hurts since he's my favorite character)
The background and setting are legit ugly, just a big green and black sky, and Toppo just decided to make it worst!
And then introducing the whole "universe that loses gets erased" is only there for an artificial form of tension, since the real antagonist is about as compelling as a brick wall.
Overall, I really DONT get why this is some people's favorite show

I'd argue this show is worst than GT ,but I honestly don't care since at the end of the day both shows are bad, and I don't care.
I agree gt was overall better it just had the issue of being very boring as they tried to make a mix of z and og dragonball which dragon ball as much as I love it is a bit outdated in terms of comedy etc.
Dragon ball gt is boring outside of certain points and dragon ball super is soulless dragon ball. I feel the animators had to scramble to do anything because they didnt have a manga to base ANYTHING off of and as such the super anime looked as bad as it did. They had to keep it cheap enough to be worth it and over work because these animators dont just work on one anime the backgrounds in early super was especially bad. Alot of strikes felt like they had no impact.
I dont blame the animators but I think whomever greenlighted super shouldve realized dragon ball is ultimate centered around its animation/visuals/fight scenes even the games are and alot of arcs are handled well considering they have very little direction going forward but overall they just lack a certain something. Hopefully when super returns because the manga is a thing itll have far better direction n everything up above.
Dragon ball super took the route of the ends justifies the means and while ultra instinct was hype and very well animated. I had to watch the entirety or at least most of super to get there. Most anime focuses on making the journey enjoyable, Building or bolstering fandoms super did that then immediately dropped the ball. My most hated moments are battle of gods, resurrection F, the rourney between universe 6 and 7, the mid/end of the goku black Saga, a good chunk of the tournament of power felt like filler. I feel like having like 50 episodes apparently spread across 30 minutes of actual in universe time makes everything feel super awkward.

Super is mediocre, not good but not bad either, GT on the other hand, well... it was mostly a Goku-only show with some decent ideas and poor execution along with its non existent animation
Instead of watching the first 2 arcs of Super, it's much better to watch Battle Of Gods & Resurrection F. At least the animation is very good

@@IIIISai I haven't seen anyone say that, wherever you're reading that from, it's just a minority. One of the critiques about DBS, is how slim the characters look now, everyone misses when the characters, looked more bulky, I don't know why anyone would complain about this.
