I like that Ebisawa did minimum to no corrections to Kan'no's work. It makes it easier to identify the animator's art. Plus Kanno was the superior artist so it made sense to not worsen it. DB should never have less than four animators per episode. The proper corrections to the art and animation can be made if needed since the proper amount of staff would be present and the main animators wouldn't have to rush with their drawings. Yes! Especially, with Goku vs. Nappa. When I was a kid I always preferred the sharper art style that became dominant in the cell saga and beyond but I lately find myself preferring the softer look of the older stuff, and preferring Dragon Ball over DBZ for this and other reasons.
Honestly I prefer the limited animation style. Though limited,it still requires a good degree of skill to get across with any amount of satisfaction, and thats evidenced by the fact that its still fun to watch in motion. Being able to portrait a higher amount of strikes with less frames and make it exiting as hell is some Japanese black magic I'm still trying to understand. Bad episodes in super, just feel bad. idk if its because its on a digital canvas, or because even the rushed stills have a degree of alloted care that its successor lacks, but bad animation in super just feels bad smh. Even the worst animation in z era feels leagues better than the worst episodes in super... but great animation in super (especially in the movies) feel mind blowing. thats the trade off.
Yeah, there's way, way uglier eps than 89. Ebisawa's outings weren't always lookers, but I'll take his triangles over Uchiyama's stubborn rounded style, especially as the series progresses. Last House may have turned out some decent looking OG Dragon Ball episodes, but by the Cell and Buu arcs, not to mention GT, they were down right fugly in how off model and non-shaded they were.
Cell VS SSJ2 Gohan are still my favorite animated episodes, and Gohan looks so badass it's crazy. My second favorite is Future Trunks making Freiza and King Cold look like weaklings....that aerial shot with his sword drawn back before the blow was unforgettable.
Yeah I figured why there was a reason I only go back to watch the abridged version of frieza saga after first viewing, but kept rewatching all the buu episodes with real fight scenes.
4:44 this scene of Goku kicking all around Frieza is really awful. Because of how much Goku doesn't move - just one leg snapping around - you'd think the intent is to show his effortless control of the situation. But, that's completely wrong. His face looks wrought with stress, and FRIEZA is the one who's supposed to be effortlessly dodging with his arms cross. So, not only is it really bad looking, but the implied meaning is all wrong too
89 is not that bad. Last House is always the worst. It's sickening. I'm an artist who's been drawing DB since 2000. Last House episodes make me puke every time. 89 is just one small step above anything Last House.
At least the team behind 89 tried to stay on model for the most part. Post Saiyan Saga, Last House is almost never on-model in my opinion. Last House Dragon Ball art just screams "lowest of low budget" art styles.
I know it's not technically anime because it's a movie but you should check out ss3 vs janemba if you haven't, both forms of janemba actually, the animation / choreography is just insane
This is the main reason why the Buu saga is my favorite. The story may not have been as good or compelling as Frieza/Cell, but the animation was so consistent and the best DBZ had ever looked
I'm not sure it's the same episode. But there's a shot around this time where piccolo, krillin, and Gohan go to fly away when Goku and Frieza start fighting. In the distance you see krillin yelling for Gohan to follow them and he's wearing his turtle gi.
Buu saga wasn't the greatest, but we didn't know how good a treat we had with Episode 279. I don't think it ever got as good as that again for Go-ku & his friends.
I said the same thing about dragon ball Z the animation is not always been consistent just as much as super too super yea there than the greatest fighting series of all time gotta keep it real tho great video
You know I was shocked to know that episode 237 of DBZ, the sacrifice of Vegeta episode was supervised by Ebisawa, I was thinking totally shit Ebisawa's episodes are so bad looking especially the Namek and frieza ones, they looked ugly as hell and episode 237 was so good looking that I was thinking that it was an Yamamuro or a hakamada episode because Vegeta and piccolo were looking so good but then I noticed on Trunks and goten and I felt, "O iya chubby face, rounded eyes, they're looking like a 4-5 year kid" then I understood it was truly an Ebisawa episode.
Personally I much prefer the art and animation of DB and early DBZ. The way the characters move and their hair flows feels very natural and organic. When the series gets to super it just seems to get very static and plastic-like to me. The animation in Buu saga Id say is probably the perfect objective middle ground
for me the best animated episode of the series is 179, hyper speed portion of cell vs goku and the climax with the instant kamehameha (i wanted to call it teleport kamehameha but the games.... never liked the name "instant transmission")
Amazing that one of the most iconic and memorable episode's is the worst animated. Get fucked other anime series, everyone knows the tail biting fight sequence.

I thought 89 was fine, it was like a build up for what was to come and it gave some suspense and urgency.
Imagine if all the episodes had the artwork of that buu episode, dbz would be perfect
Gotenks buu vs gohan buu is one of my favorite fight animations ( when buu starts Dominating) beside kid buu vs ssj2, goku vs cell etc.
If that's DBZ's worst, that's not too bad. Not to say it was well animated, but still far above the embarrassment that was Super.
Cell VS SSJ2 Gohan are still my favorite animated episodes, and Gohan looks so badass it's crazy. My second favorite is Future Trunks making Freiza and King Cold look like weaklings....that aerial shot with his sword drawn back before the blow was unforgettable.
Even the worst animated ones still looked better and had more depth and soul than db super
Yeah I figured why there was a reason I only go back to watch the abridged version of frieza saga after first viewing, but kept rewatching all the buu episodes with real fight scenes.
Super sucks to me because they to away the gritty look, that and the rainbow transformations
The fight of Goku ssj2 vs Boo is so good that they even added to Dragon Ball Z Kai, which supposedly had no filler
Yeah Goku vs Kid Buu is still my favorite dragon ball fight, i remember being impressed by the fluidity and choreography even when I was a kid.
279's art style has always bothered me because the mouths always looked horrendous.
Agreed, mouths and the way their jaws and necks look in many of these shots are just silly and the artstyle looked way better in early DBZ!
Ik its not a Episode but a movie but Dragonball Super Broly was the best animated Dragonball movie/episode I watched so far in my opinion.
Honestly I thought keisuke masunaga drew almost everything cause his corrections are everywhere in the episode 😅
Buu saga wasn't the greatest, but we didn't know how good a treat we had with Episode 279. I don't think it ever got as good as that again for Go-ku & his friends.
I would like if you do part 2,3 and so on, great vid.
I’m currently re watching dragon ball because I love the old anime
The ssj2 filler fight against kid buu is a sight it behold
The frieza vs goku fight is definitely the definition of make em wait for it
keisuke masunaga's work will forever be an inspiration to me
Damn bruh, regardless of how simple it’s awesome.
for me the best animated episode of the series is 179, hyper speed portion of cell vs goku and the climax with the instant kamehameha (i wanted to call it teleport kamehameha but the games.... never liked the name "instant transmission")
Amazing that one of the most iconic and memorable episode's is the worst animated. Get fucked other anime series, everyone knows the tail biting fight sequence.
I'd say the episode Future Trunks returns to the future was the worst.
