Honestly with Roshi explaining the DragonBalls origins, i figured he didnt actually know and was just telling them the supposed origin that was passed down as a myth. That way it actually makes sense in the context of the story
it made sense that Kami and Popo knew the truth about the dragon balls but this lore was never shared because they're in the lookout a place almost no one knows aside from the Z fighters
When he first met Bulma, Roshi literally had no clue what Dragon Balls were despite having one as a necklace. Either he was intentionally making up nonsense for their origin, or Toei just forgot.

Same! I had no idea those two arcs were filler until a few years ago, when I went back for a rewatch and was more intimately familiar with that was in the manga. Personally, I'd still headcannon them in to the story regardless. They do so much to flesh out those particular chapters of Goku's journey (I mean, it's insane that their wedding really wasn't shown in the manga looking back, not even as an epilogue).
I believed it to be cannon to the point were I was confused that mark didn't mention it in his Dragon Ball review. I am glad we got to hear his thoughts about it now.
I think the OG Dragonball Anime in general did a really good job incorporating filler because, 1)none of it is too long, & 2) most if not all the filler fit naturally within the story. After watching the anime one of the only things I thought could be filler was the Dr.Slump crossover, and It was a surprised that was actually in the manga.
man I wish the series kept THAT Chi-Chi, not only was the jump to Z a bit of a whiplash, but also it was just sad and painful at times seeing her straight up being just an annoyed wife until like the 3/4 of the Cell Saga The Super kinda returned to the annoyed Chi-Chi while occasionally trying to balance it out but it still is kinda sad how we lost their relation and all the 2 had.

Toshiki Inoue is perhaps the most unhinged writer in all of tokusatsu. His most iconic characters are a psychopathic serial killer and a manipulative sociopath who's supposed to be a superhero; both are from a superhero franchise made for children and selling toys. The fact that he used to work on Dragon Ball is a bit of a surprise, but not weird considering how long he's worked in Toei.
What I love about these fillers is that at the end of DBZ, when Goku use the genkidama or spirit bomb against kid Boo, you can see characters from the very first DB fillers when Goku ask for help. It always makes me cry seeing them, like an old friend you haven't seen in years

The gourd and the fan are both allusions to the original journey to the west. The gourd originally belonged the twin demons Gold and Silver, except it only sucked up people that answered, not people that didn't. The fan is even more interesting because the person who originally had it was the Ox King's wife, the Iron Fan Princess.
You didn't mention one of the best things about Popo's training. At the end of the filler, Goku is still a complete novice at sensing Ki and all of his struggling has amounted to almost nothing. Then, when the manga plot returns after the time-skip, Goku can sense his buddies Ki before they even arrive. It's such a great blink and you miss it moment to show how much he has improved before he even steps into the ring.
I LOVE the amusement park filler. I rewatched the series about 2 years ago and that one really stood out to me. It has such a comforting slice of life appeal and I’m happy the Goku’s BALLS scene became an instant meme across the internet. 80s comedy gold lol
I agree! It made that part of Goku's journey feel like a unique challenge that differed from the training arcs we would normally see. It showed the true merit of Goku's character, and it was nice getting to him paired up with Yajarobe through the perils of a mysterious dimension (akin to what you'd see in the Lookout later on).
@brodievickers7158 Having a strong resolve to take a risk like that is fine and all but it's not like he made a huge choice in the manga. It was either die to Piccolo knowing you're too weak or risk dying to poison but have a chance at being strong enough. It didn't offer much in the way of character for Goku and just conveniently unlocked his potential. At least the show built to this choice more with the journey and tested his resolve by offering him an easier way out.
8:47 My jaw dropped when you revealed Toshiki Inoue was the writer - he's a prominent writer in Japan, but is known a lot more for his Tokusatsu work. His recent work is as head writer of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers, which is perhaps one of the most batshit insane piece of television I've ever seen.
I love it when filler is just straight up fun with all the characters we love. Just goofing off or going to the beach, it just makes the show feel special in a way.
It's nice to see the characters interact in low stake scenarios outside the main plot for the stakes to matter we have to care about the characters enough to want to see them be happy and if they are successful in that it would be wrong to not give the audience at least some scenes every now and then where we can just enjoy the time with the characters. Seeing characters outside of the plot is like seeing your friends outside of work/school.
@@GAHAHAHH And that is precisely why people like the very last Z Filler episode, being the party at Bulma's that Goku is late for because he's trying to help some baby dinosaurs, the characters worked hard during the arc to stop Buu and now they deserve just a chance to relax, hang out, and enjoy each others company, as well as have some fun interactions, and we the audience deserve a chance to relax and be happy for them and enjoy the fun little show that isn't related to the plot.
Yeah. I've always enjoyed slice of life moments with my characters, and I'm not just talking about Dragon Ball, so I'm always down for Filler sagas. ❤😊❤
in the original dragonball anime i would say filler really made the story better then the manga at times, especially during the king piccolo arc. In z they were hit or miss at times but were really fun. Not all filler is bad as they can enhance the story if written well.
The first Hunt for the Dragonballs Arc gets enhanced by the Anime Introducing the Pilaf Gang earlier in the story making them more involved throughout the hunt for the Dragonballs. I also really liked Colonel Silver's introducion in the Anime. As someone who was first introduced to the story through the Anime it helped build up the idea of the Red Ribbon Army and the threat level they posses.
It does have the worst scene of all time, which is Pilaf showing erotica to Piccolo - not because it involves porn, but because Pilaf - known to nearly faint at the sight of handholding - would never even go near pornography without bursting into flames grossly OOC smh
Man, I totally forgot about the filler arc with Chichi and Goku after the Piccolo Jr. fight. Probably watched it a dozen times as I had family in Japan that recorded it for us on VHS. I must still have it somewhere...
The first time I watched the original Dragon Ball (i never read manga) I thought the training part on the Lookout with Popo was part of the story and I was surprised that it was a filler episode in the way that it actually provided a great addition and didn't get in the way of the main story like some of the other not-so-tonally-appropriate ones stories...
As a Toku fan hearing Mark just casually and unknowingly say Inoues name without knowing how big his impact is in a lot of Toei projects has really gotten me to do a double take.
The one thing I really did enjoy about the first stretch of filler is that I like how it introduced the Red Ribbon Army as a big, menacing force of awful people. Watching Colonel Silver terrorize people and get talked up by his superiors made it feel cathartic when Goku just completely bodies the guy.
I always loved the last filler episodes with Goku and Chi Chi. I loved seeing them work together, and made me buy them more as a couple. Seeing it again here makes me wish Chi Chi was more involved in Z tbh.
Yeah. There's some REALLY nice filler moments in Z's Cell Saga that expand on the relationship between Goku and Chi Chi in the years before Z. It's so wholesome and memorable that it just makes me wish we got to see more of them together as a family again (actually, now that I think about it, there were some similar moments in the movies/Buu filler as well).
It was cute. So much of Dragon ball filler meaningfully compliments the main story, and ESPECIALLY the characters that skipping it is kind of a crime. Most anime just squanders filler, but not Dragon Ball. Not all filler is equal
Something I wonder sometimes if Toriyama intentionally would rush through things like the training time skips to give the anime something to make filler over while also staying ahead of it (I still don’t get how Vegeta attaining super Saiyan for the first time of all things is anime only) He did seem involved in filler to a very minor extent with giving some ideas for filler to the crew (my source for this is Kanzenshu if anyone questions that)
The moments when the Filler in Dragon Ball is good is where it adds more to the story. Anything thing else feels like drag. OG Dragon Ball managed to do a solid job with it's Filler.
Trivia: several of these filler episodes are references to adventures from Journey to the West. There is a water-gourd that liquefies people for their life force. Monkey can make copies of himself with hair. There is the Fan Princess thingie.
Toshiki Inoue is (in)famous in the Tokusatsu circles for his work on the Kamen Rider and Super Sentai series. He either writes well loved and fan favorite seasons like Faiz and Jetman or makes work that are.... divisive at best, like the latter half of Hibiki or the Faiz light novel . I love his work for how he is able to flesh out his characters and making even some of the biggest jerks somewhat likeable (or at least you love to hate them). But when its clear he doesn't really care too much about the material, you get a bunch of just weird shit happening. As much as people love Faiz (like I do) no one is going to defend the story or the ending of it. You're either going to get home runs or absolute misses with Inoue and I wouldn't have it any other way. Donbrothers, his latest work is also one of my personal favorites of his but its also so ludicrous and insane but you get a clear feeling of him loving writing every second of it. I would honestly recommend his work in toku if you like character focused stuff. Although I do have to state that if you hate the dramatic irony of characters not talking things out over what is usually just a big misunderstanding for the majority of the season you will HATE his shit.
@@tarsier8261 I would 100% bet that's deliberate thematically tbh. A real Inoue move. And upon a recent rewatch, the lack of communication is annoying BUT absolutely realistic and I think that's why it can piss people off so much: it reminds them too much of real life lol. Which I guess is a big part of why Faiz's characters are some of the most well-loved in the franchise.
Good filler is used for character development, it gives us a chance to understand our character’s personality in a low stakes environment. I love dragon ball filler because goku is so full of personality and I enjoy seeing him in weird and unique situations
I actually love a lot of the Original dragon ball filler, I know a lot of people don't like that "monster of the week" sort of insertion but I personally love those self contained episodes.
Even though filler is often hated in anime, I never minded it too much since it gave a little more insight to the world, even if it ultimately didn’t lead to much
I think that in the case of the Dragon Ball franchise it's not so bad (Garlic Jr. is the worst and isn't exactly horrendous by general anime standards), however there's some anime that just has some terrible filler, which is why general anime fans tend to have a passionate hate for it. If you want a great example of the terrible effects of bad filler, just look at Blue Exorcist. While the end of the first season seems all well and good, you get to the beginning of the second season and get confused and frustrated because seemed like they just hit a reset button when it's because it was filler.
my favorite filler will always be the driving episode and goku and chichi's adventure before getting married! idk but i just love watching the characters (especially goku bc he's... well goku) trying to live a normal life while being an absolute menace without knowing it lmao
My favorite fillers are of course the training at kamis place but also the introduction to Tenshinhan. In the Manga he just appears in the tournament but with the filler we get to meet him earlier and also get to see how he actually did evil things.
The Chichi/Goku wedding dress arc will always be one of my favorites. I'm a sucker for more magic/mythology in Dragonball, and Goku and Chichi have really nice character moments.
Toshiki Inoue! He's the writer of some of my favorite sentai (Jetman) Riders (Kiva) and has written some other Dragonball and Z episodes as well as some of the episodes of Death Note. Of course he's got massive balls, this guy basically took sentai and made it serious and saved it
I always forget that the Heavenly Training Arc isnt canon. It feels like such a key part of the series and is my favourite training portion. Above Roshi's training, above Korrin, above anything from Z or Super, just magnificent.
i absolutely tend to love filler episodes, even if i'll always admit that they CAN be boring: Filler is where they get to breathe, let the events of the past take effect, evolve as a person outside of high stress events, relationships evolve, and a whole other massively long list of character/interpersonal developments. filler is the pizza's crust. and people who refuse to eat crust are monsters. mic. drop.
Toshiki Inoue has an insane legacy of work in Toei. He's mainly known for his work on Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, but more notoriously for how his work fluctuates between extreme peaks and valleys of success and failure. It should be said though, his writing on Chojin Sentai Jetman is responsible for saving the Super Sentai franchise from cancellation at the time. Its huge success would lead to the creation of Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, aka the show that would be adapted as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. He also recently returned to Sentai for the first time in many years with Avataro Sentai Donbrothers, which ended up one of the most successful (and absolutely unhinged) Sentai seasons after almost a decade of steady decline in ratings and toy sales. Also fun fact, the theme song (as well as the ending and several other insert songs) for Jetman was performed by Hironobu Kageyama - the lead singer of Cha-La Head Cha-La for Dragon Ball Z.
Toshiki Inoue wrote a bunch of the Dragon Ball anime, including some iconic episodes like the Tenshinhan vs Yamcha fight! He's also very prolific in anime in general (most relevant here, wrote a lot of Dr. Slump episodes) as well as live-action TV, most famously superhero works like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, for which he writes...memorably, and with a similar "fuck it, we ball" attitude that's on display in the "one giant Dragon Ball" episode here.
I really enjoyed the Wedding Dress arc, it was good to see chacters that kinda got forgotten later have one last hurrah and a great way to end Dragonball. Plus the Banjo (?) fan being brought up again was a nice callback to the start. Looking forward to DRIVING CARS.
I want to mention that the gourd is based off an actual artifact in the original journey to the west, which was even more powerful, but had similarly specific conditions.
Don't forget: That gourd not only sucks people in, it also slowly turns them into alcohol to drink! And at the end Goku uses it to suck the bikers into the gourd. Meaning he effectively killed those bikers in cold blood as he only survived the gourd thanks to the potara staff expanding creating a perch for him to sit on until the cork is removed.
If Mark reviews every bit of Dragon Ball Content, he'll be Isekaied into his own DB Timeline, called "What if Mark was Trapped in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber?"
13:57 that's actually a direct reference to journey to the west! Kinda. In it there is a character who had a magic gourd that will suck anything up that _does_ respond to it's name getting called, so that's funny
I’m glad you decided to cover this because the Saiyan/Namek saga filler was always what I loved, also Buu Saga with the otherworld tournament and the part where Kid Buu goes to otherworld to beat up Krillin and Yamcha But honestly, there is still some filler that I hadn’t seen until this video, like some of the OG DB stuff and Cell Saga filler
Say what you will some of the filler is a banger 1. Garlic Jr may come off as lame but it's the first time Gohan plays defender of earth roll, plus the arc has og characters fight like Chichi and I'm always happy to see of DB characters fight. 2. More Frieza and Goku fighting is insane haha but can't be mad at all about it. 3. Ultimate Gohan lasting longer against Super Buu after Gotenks was badass, it really showed how strong Ultimate Gohan is. 4. Base Vegito "breaking in" his body was superbly animated
Toshiki Inoue was heavily involved in writing episodes of early Heisei Kamen Rider (From Kuuga to Decade), a few in which he was the head writer (Agito, Faiz, 2nd half of Hibiki, Kiva). He was also the head writer of Choujin Sentai Jetman and Avataro Sentai Donbrothers.
Interesting that Mark forget to mention the plothole during the training filler, when Goku went back in the past Master Shen(at that time still student) was portrayed as evil person, even though he was supposed to become evil after Master Mutaito died sealing Demon King Picollo away. For me that was really strange even as kid
Alot of this may be non-canon, but hey; It does an interesting job at world building.(Even if certain details get contradicted later down the line.) I would really love to see some of these filler elements expounded upon one day.
I wish mark talked about the Ultra Divine Water stuff. Since it makes the Goku’s strength increase against Piccolo much more warranted. (Idk if it would have changed his opinion since it’s still filler, but it still would have been cool to see him talk about it)
Incredible use of music in this video to convey everything beautifully, from kikuchi tracks all the way to Tower of Death from DQV being beautiful picks for setting the themes and tones for you analysis. I loved it
I remember watching these episodes when I was younger not knowing they were filler, I would bring them up and people would stare at me with pure confusion.
I remember watching the wedding dress arc as a 5 year old kid on television, and ever since then it felt so Dragon Ball, I was shocked to find out that it was filler. It left an impact, because for the next 10 years of my life, until my discovery of the internet it was the last piece of Dragon Ball material I watched, since I never actually watched Z until I was much older. It was so Nostalgic seeing that footage in your video now, as a 29 year old adult. The eternal fire burning Ox King’s castle is just so Dragon Ball. The whole thing really is a Mytical Adventure!
a video on filler? i love that. dont care how much you'll squeeze out of series, please continue to cover every and any aspect you want to talk about. vids like these, the dubs, music, are always so refreshing. as for this video, im glad it's getting covered! filler was a huge part of my time with dragon ball as well. lots of misses instead of hits, but there were great ones in it too. the snake way filler is my favorite! goku training episodes on his way to Namek is probably my second favorite.
Unpopular opinion: Garlicky Jr arc is underrated as fuck. Gohan, Piccolo and Krillin being the Earth's heroes was great! In regular Dragon Ball the story where Goku met a young master Roshi and his master was a stand out filler episode for me
One of my favorite filler episodes was one that was featured in a dbz dvd i owned where Goku recruits dende as the guardian of earth and then goes to search for the dragon balls only to come across mercenary tao
I remember all of these episodes and back when i watched them i obviously didn't even know what filler was, but some of these were my favorite episodes. Especially the one with the doppelganger Goku.
For me, the best filler is if it's funny or just made with an interesting concept, that's what makes me want to watch it. Unfortunately, most of them, for example in super were boring for me, but some, like the one with baseball, were really cool, as well as the driving episode (the best one in Z was very cool), but in the original there were only a couple, but made very well.
I don't know if other people will share my thought, but i would add 2 points to the Wedding Dress arc based solely on the sentimentalism of a widowed father (?) protecting the most precious present his daughter's deceased mother left for her, i think we (Mark and i, as well as many other DB fans) are in an age in which sentimentalism like that, can get really deep, specially if you also think that marriage, in the religious way, is a goal in your life and not a trap, specially a type of strong marriage like Goku and Chichi's.
There used to be a website in the early 2000’s called Dragon Ball Z uncut. It was dedicated to the analysis and comparison of the edited DBZ episodes. It also pointed out various filler elements. I remember going to that site everyday to learn about what the real DBZ was like.
There are benefits to filler (when it's done well). I typically enjoy the type that shows characters during their off days, y'know, seeing what they're doing when not constantly fighting. Though ultimately I am glad that most anime nowadays don't really do Filler after switching from "Forever Shows" to seasonal. There are irregularities that show up, and the filler produced from those sure are... something. (I think like... Boruto is almost entirely comprised of filler...)
8:51 Decided to look it up... He's mainly known for Tokusatsu, such as Super Sentai (being the main writer of Jetman and Donbrothers) and Kamen Rider (Agito, 555, and Hibiki.)
Can’t make you or won’t make you? Us fans enjoy your channel too much to put you through the torture of breaking down the filler that is the 4 hour stare down with Friezer. Keep up the great work.
Goku's doll was the first episode of Dragon Ball i came across and it was so unlike anything else I had seen at the time. It has a special place in my heart and is still one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.
Thank you for this content. While I've read all of dragon ball, I have never watched through all of OG DB. While filler, it's fun to hear about these stories I've never experienced. Looking forward to your filler review of Z!
Honestly The wedding dress arc is what I think of when I think of og dragon ball. Honestly a lot of the dragon ball filler is worth it in my opinion, assuming you aren't trying to binge the show for a purpose. You just get immersed and vibe with it, working through at your pace and. Of course this isn't counting things like muscle tower or penguin village where they destroy the pacing, I am referring only to the filler arcs.
It turns out that Toshiki Inoue is a fairly renowned screenwriter with several works in anime and in Tokusatsu (live-action w/ heavy effects). Apparently, he worked at Toei since the Dr. Slump days. Some of his other works are on Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Yu-Gi-Oh!, some FMA episodes, Death Note, and lots of Super Sentai films & shows.
i love that the Dragon Ball's origin story gets contradicted In a way that feels natural, Roshi is telling a myth so is 2 layers of World Building & then DBZ kinda hints that when The Namekian split himself into Kami & Piccolo their memory of Namek got completely jumbled... so there is a non-zero chance that the Dragon Balls were either one, or they used to not fly off
I never knew the earliest RRA stuff was filler. In fact, other than the origin of the Dragonballs, I didn't know any of this mentioned here was filler. It's all so good! Like Yu-Gi-Oh quality filler.

This
Right? People cherish comedy or character building/buddy moments, like Goku and Piccolo driving cars. No one wants a whole arc of Garlic Jr.
In the words of DBZ Abridged:
"You wanna go drive cars?"
"Bitchin."
Yeah when are we going to get a sick Bount arc review
This is why, funny enough
I love dragon ball super filler

Honestly, the filler journey to find the Ultra Divine water really fixed the issue with that power up being seemingly uunearned. Rare Toei W.
I really like how it is framed as a test of character for Goku especially where Darkness tries to force Goku to drop Yajirobe and save his own life.
Yes, but 2 episodes for that journey was too much.
@kian7406 You could ditch the ice part and just keep the cave part, and it would be just as effective and less boring.
Yeah king piccolo was WAYY better in DB anime. MistareFusion mentioned it too
The first Hunt for the Dragonballs Arc gets enhanced by the Anime Introducing the Pilaf Gang earlier in the story making them more involved throughout the hunt for the Dragonballs.
I also really liked Colonel Silver's introducion in the Anime. As someone who was first introduced to the story through the Anime it helped build up the idea of the Red Ribbon Army and the threat level they posses.
It does have the worst scene of all time, which is Pilaf showing erotica to Piccolo - not because it involves porn, but because Pilaf - known to nearly faint at the sight of handholding - would never even go near pornography without bursting into flames
grossly OOC smh
Man, I totally forgot about the filler arc with Chichi and Goku after the Piccolo Jr. fight. Probably watched it a dozen times as I had family in Japan that recorded it for us on VHS. I must still have it somewhere...
the wedding dress arc is still one of my favorites in the entire series simply because it really returns to the first 12 episodes of the series
Same, I was eating and then I heard Inoue and immediately froze for like, 5 or 6 seconds.
@@willemdefrendfr fr, just one of those "oh, you don't know" moments.
The one thing I really did enjoy about the first stretch of filler is that I like how it introduced the Red Ribbon Army as a big, menacing force of awful people. Watching Colonel Silver terrorize people and get talked up by his superiors made it feel cathartic when Goku just completely bodies the guy.
That last filler arc was a lot of fun, especially since we got to see Adult Chi chi actually do stuff and go on an adventure.
Toei was really on a roll starting with Popo’s training. I’d say from there to Gohan’s training was the best filler the show ever had
gohan training before the saiyans?
"GOHAN DODGE!!!"
It's so wholesome and memorable that it just makes me wish we got to see more of them together as a family again (actually, now that I think about it, there were some similar moments in the movies/Buu filler as well).
i wish chi-chi still fought and also that humans could actually still do stuff
It was cute. So much of Dragon ball filler meaningfully compliments the main story, and ESPECIALLY the characters that skipping it is kind of a crime.
Most anime just squanders filler, but not Dragon Ball. Not all filler is equal
Something I wonder sometimes if Toriyama intentionally would rush through things like the training time skips to give the anime something to make filler over while also staying ahead of it (I still don’t get how Vegeta attaining super Saiyan for the first time of all things is anime only)
He did seem involved in filler to a very minor extent with giving some ideas for filler to the crew (my source for this is Kanzenshu if anyone questions that)
I know Toriyama provided the idea to make Baseball filler for Yamcha in Z, so that's neat.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Mark went insane with all the DB content he’s consuming 💀
I'm surprised he's still able to read the script
Dragonball fans are built different. They can consume an unlimited amount of Dragonball material without getting tired of it
That's because he already went insane because of Super DragonBall Heroes and the live action Fullmetal Alchemist
Goes inSAIYAN you mean? Sorry, I’ll leave
go away@@Ash_Wen-li
I can't wait to see your take on the Dragon Ball GT fillers. It's like they took filler to a whole new level!
I wasn't expecting this at all.
Honestly my favorite filler is the Garlic Jr arc and the Other World Tournament.
Always remember that Faiz is a show where people fail to communicate while using cell phones to transform.
@@tarsier8261 in my recent watch of it, the lack of communication wasn't too bad. But there were definitely points where it got on my nerves.
You should watch the anime Dragon Drive. It is such a wild time and he directed the script. Also season 0 of Yu Gi Oh
@@kotalee2106 It's absolutely deliberate and thematic. I just think it's as hilarious as Kaixa just throwing Faiz's upgrade at his head.
Good filler is used for character development, it gives us a chance to understand our character’s personality in a low stakes environment. I love dragon ball filler because goku is so full of personality and I enjoy seeing him in weird and unique situations
I love that we got to see more of Master Mutaito, even if technically that was more of a holodeck recreation of him. And more Popo too!
I actually love a lot of the Original dragon ball filler, I know a lot of people don't like that "monster of the week" sort of insertion but I personally love those self contained episodes.
I love MOTW stories honestly don’t understand why they’re hated
Even though filler is often hated in anime, I never minded it too much since it gave a little more insight to the world, even if it ultimately didn’t lead to much
If it is well done. Not just fan service bs or kind of mindless. Dragon Ball had some very good ones.
Filler is great, it adds color to the story and gets you more into it imo
Of course he's got massive balls, this guy basically took sentai and made it serious and saved it
I feel like Dragon Ball filler episodes range from "Why did they make this" to "Why didn't they make more of this"
I always forget that the Heavenly Training Arc isnt canon. It feels like such a key part of the series and is my favourite training portion. Above Roshi's training, above Korrin, above anything from Z or Super, just magnificent.
i absolutely tend to love filler episodes, even if i'll always admit that they CAN be boring:
Filler is where they get to breathe, let the events of the past take effect, evolve as a person outside of high stress events, relationships evolve, and a whole other massively long list of character/interpersonal developments.
filler is the pizza's crust.
and people who refuse to eat crust are monsters.
mic. drop.
Dragon Ball filler is my favorite between it, Z, and Super. Dragon Ball’s Comedy really shines through during the filler imo
Had no idea the Popo training arc wasn't canon, it fit so well with the rest of the story. Wild
makes sense, because as we all know... "FIRST RULE OF POPO'S TRAINING!!!!"
I was wondering if it was based on that gourd!
8:50 As someone more familiar with his work in tokusatsu, yeah that’s a pretty accurate description of Toshiki Inoue
Cool of you to do the filler stuff. These DB and DBZ reviews have been amazing. Ty mark and everyone it’s been one fun ride. 💫
I’m glad you decided to cover this because the Saiyan/Namek saga filler was always what I loved, also Buu Saga with the otherworld tournament and the part where Kid Buu goes to otherworld to beat up Krillin and Yamcha
But honestly, there is still some filler that I hadn’t seen until this video, like some of the OG DB stuff and Cell Saga filler
Say what you will some of the filler is a banger
All these are dbz fillers
@@alchemistofsteel8099 That's what I said
Toshiki Inoue was heavily involved in writing episodes of early Heisei Kamen Rider (From Kuuga to Decade), a few in which he was the head writer (Agito, Faiz, 2nd half of Hibiki, Kiva).
I assume he eventually saw the error of his ways since he restarted his training at the end but relapsed after King Piccolo.
I love how the Tien filler sets up a conflict between Tien and Goku before the Tournament.
Alot of this may be non-canon, but hey; It does an interesting job at world building.(Even if certain details get contradicted later down the line.) I would really love to see some of these filler elements expounded upon one day.
Omg thank you Mark for giving us this, I was wanting more DB from you and you delivered.
You are the best
I wish mark talked about the Ultra Divine Water stuff. Since it makes the Goku’s strength increase against Piccolo much more warranted. (Idk if it would have changed his opinion since it’s still filler, but it still would have been cool to see him talk about it)
Not gonna lie, OG Dragon Ball had some great filler.
Incredible use of music in this video to convey everything beautifully, from kikuchi tracks all the way to Tower of Death from DQV being beautiful picks for setting the themes and tones for you analysis. I loved it
The huge amount of work you’ve put Into your Dragonball reviews never ceases to amaze me Mark! Stellar work as usual!
I remember watching these episodes when I was younger not knowing they were filler, I would bring them up and people would stare at me with pure confusion.
As a kamen rider/super sentai fan, hearing that inoue wrote an episode of OG dragon ball is crazy
He also wrote for the first Dragon Ball movie Cruse of the Blood Rubies
I remember watching the wedding dress arc as a 5 year old kid on television, and ever since then it felt so Dragon Ball, I was shocked to find out that it was filler. It left an impact, because for the next 10 years of my life, until my discovery of the internet it was the last piece of Dragon Ball material I watched, since I never actually watched Z until I was much older. It was so Nostalgic seeing that footage in your video now, as a 29 year old adult. The eternal fire burning Ox King’s castle is just so Dragon Ball. The whole thing really is a Mytical Adventure!
The Cell Saga filler with Gohan, Goku and Tao is peak content and I wish it was canon.
a video on filler? i love that. dont care how much you'll squeeze out of series, please continue to cover every and any aspect you want to talk about. vids like these, the dubs, music, are always so refreshing.
as for this video, im glad it's getting covered! filler was a huge part of my time with dragon ball as well. lots of misses instead of hits, but there were great ones in it too. the snake way filler is my favorite! goku training episodes on his way to Namek is probably my second favorite.
Theres also some filler in the king piccolo arc where goku and yajirobe go in this ice place and goku seeing chichi a 3rd time
I don't know if other people will share my thought, but i would add 2 points to the Wedding Dress arc based solely on the sentimentalism of a widowed father (?) protecting the most precious present his daughter's deceased mother left for her, i think we (Mark and i, as well as many other DB fans) are in an age in which sentimentalism like that, can get really deep, specially if you also think that marriage, in the religious way, is a goal in your life and not a trap, specially a type of strong marriage like Goku and Chichi's.
I also didn't know about the classic filler, since I read the manga as a kid. Good to know what I missed out on.
DUDE! Husky is pretty awesome.
There used to be a website in the early 2000’s called Dragon Ball Z uncut. It was dedicated to the analysis and comparison of the edited DBZ episodes. It also pointed out various filler elements. I remember going to that site everyday to learn about what the real DBZ was like.
Okay, now do Naruto's filler.
You don't need to kill him yknow
Real
Thats the whole anime
@@Bane_Firstroughly 40%
Not as bad as boruto. The only anime in history that is 70% filler. How that's even possible is beyond me.
I really appreciate the Dragon Quest music for the final portion of the video. That last wedding dress arc definitely gives me DQ vibes.
8:51
Decided to look it up... He's mainly known for Tokusatsu, such as Super Sentai (being the main writer of Jetman and Donbrothers) and Kamen Rider (Agito, 555, and Hibiki.)
I never knew you never watched the original series.💀
Is that possible?? He has to have seen it before
Can’t make you or won’t make you? Us fans enjoy your channel too much to put you through the torture of breaking down the filler that is the 4 hour stare down with Friezer. Keep up the great work.
The episode where Goku learns to drive is PEAK
The amusement park is my favorite filler episode of DB. I LOVE the setting.

Goku's doll was the first episode of Dragon Ball i came across and it was so unlike anything else I had seen at the time. It has a special place in my heart and is still one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.
"Which way to Papaya Island?" is one of my favorite episodes of dragon ball.
as a manga reader, I really appreciate videos like this!
The passion and time put into every video is deeply appreciated. TY!
Mark has review Dragon Ball, Reviewed Naruto, and is now diving into Dragon Ball's filler. Then that means...
MARK YOU INSANE FOOL!
i love that the Dragon Ball's origin story gets contradicted In a way that feels natural, Roshi is telling a myth so is 2 layers of World Building & then DBZ kinda hints that when The Namekian split himself into Kami & Piccolo their memory of Namek got completely jumbled... so there is a non-zero chance that the Dragon Balls were either one, or they used to not fly off
I actually like the OG Dragonball filler. Especially Goku and ChiChi’s marriage adventure at the end.
I never knew the earliest RRA stuff was filler. In fact, other than the origin of the Dragonballs, I didn't know any of this mentioned here was filler. It's all so good! Like Yu-Gi-Oh quality filler.
I never read the Dragon Ball Manga until after Goro so I never knew the Time Travel Arc wasn't in the manga and that blows my mind.
