How is it depressing? I would rather want original to have high quality than the redubs. Plus JP version is 9001 times better than all the English versions combined in fusion. Not only You got actual experience instead of making Goku a Superman, while he is literally egoistic power hungry guy, but also better voice actors. I still can't comprehend how did they thought these voices fit the characters. Piccolo and Vegeta sounds like tryhards in English version. Don't know which one. In one version Goku sounds like a parody. i genuinely thought a scene from actual English dubbing was from Abridged. Like really. How could they do this THAT bad. Only a very few characters sound good or at least okay in English. And don't get me even started with original BGM. English version is a heresy with how they changed the soundtrack.

The most baffling change to me is in Cooler's Revenge. They changed Karin's line from "oh, BTW, what's a bean daddy?" to "What a great kid, Goku's lucky to have him." Yajirobe's response of "I don't know" makes no sense now. Also the audio mixing when Goku hits Coola while The Game by Distrubed plays is awful in the modern release compared to the old VHS release.

It's not just the fact that they changed Korin's line, it's also done by a completely different voice actor that doesn't sound anything like Korin, it's so jarring and random.
Also, it's not just the Disturbed song, EVERY song is cheaply slapped on, the mixing for the remastered version of that movie is a disaster. All the songs start too early, cut abruptly, are way too loud, have no effects/timing applied, etc. Lord Slug also has some issues like these.

It's pretty apparent to me that Funimation used an older mix of the audio recordings that had flubs, old lines, and different music placement. Scott Morgan for example, said that the music choice for Goku's nightmare about the Androids was hotly debated and changed last minute to what we got on Toonami, and so the version on the Orange Brick was what was there originally. The song on the Orange Brick was one that Scott Morgan composed specifically for that scene and the cues match the pacing, but either Funimation or Faulconer didn't like the song and changed it for the broadcast. The music changes weren't deliberate, just an oversight.
And then you have Movies 4 and 5 - the rock music score for both movies were clearly a rough mix and not the final mix, as the placement and transitions are way sloppier.

Kai definitely doesn't use the Kikuchi score well at all. Toei only used few tracks from it and it often bored me of some of my favorite tracks from the Cell saga by playing them in almost every episodes (I remember they often played M1314 to the point of using it 3 fucking times in the same episode once and they often couldn't find another track to play than M1623 in emotional scenes). The dub is great and obviously the dub team didn't have anything to do with the score but the way the Kikuchi score was used was really bad. I can easily watch Kai with the Yamamoto score or fan edits with either the original Kikuchi score or the Faulconer Productions score. But the official Kai Kikuchi score… just no.

North America started professional in Canada, but with HEAVY censoring. The first 3 Dragon Ball Z movie dubs by Ocean Group released by Pioneer with the Original Japanese soundtrack was probably the best work they've ever done. Then they decided to go in-house down here in Texas, with a huge budget cut. Even the VHS box sets were cheap with just using a random screenshot from the show slapped on the cover. They contracted an amateur production studio grabbing anyone they could off the streets to voice key characters. It is the most flubbed dub for any anime I've ever seen. But the thing about Dragon Ball Z is that it's so beloved that none of that production nonsense could completely destroy it like the average anime. From 1999 and beyond Funimation was built upon the foundation of DBZ and their trail by fire approach. This is why it's like this today. A patch job, after patch job, with an overhaul to patch the patches, and then another overhaul with Kai. The production here in North America was a complete bag of cats.

The intensity and seriousness was taken away with subtle but important things like music, ambient sounds, and dialog. Scenes like showing the empty ghost town after Cell had absorbed the entire population, or when we see Gohan laid out after taking a beating from Buu, these scenes originally were silent and let the atmosphere and soundtrack do the talking, but they just had to slap some goofy narration over them for the remastered releases.

Oh my god. I grew up with the original vhs tapes. I specifically watched the episodes of Vegeta getting defeated by perfect Cell and Trunks stepping up and then his entire fight. I loved these episodes so much as a kid (still some of my faves). I remember them so well I’m fact, that when I got the Blu-Ray box set as and adult I was like hold up, what? There were two instances that I just couldn’t overlook.
One was when Cell regenerates his arm right after the Final Flash while Vegeta is gloating. He regenerates his arm and the music turns to this sinister but dire music (I believe the Faulconer score called it “Destruction”) but in the re release it was just the fucking Cell theme just like you mentioned!
The next one was while Vegeta was powering up his Final Flash. I remember Vegeta was silent up until the very end when he says “Now if you really wanna test your strength, stay right where you are” and of course his iconic yell of final flash. As a viewer, it made me feel uneasy bc i had no idea what his intentions where the entire time he was charging and the amazing visual and audio was the spectacle. But the rerelease adds a line from Vegeta saying “CELLLLL once again you have stolen a saiyans honor!” which was then followed up by the original lines.
I saw this and it just felt…. Wrong. Like the line is no where near as weird or bad as the ones in this video, and some could even argue it’s a great line. The issue, however, is that you don’t even see Vegeta say it. Instead you get shots of Trunks and Krillin, making it feel completely out of place and detracting from the tension and the moment.
Maybe nowhere near as glaring and terrible as some of these examples lol but it straight up made me feel like I had made up memories from my childhood or like I was in some kind of Mandela Effect. Thank you for this, Mark! Thank you for letting me know I’m NOT crazy lol

The one I remember is the fight between Piccolo and 17. After Piccolo uses Hellzone Gernade the music used then was I believe a theme they used once when Future Trunks explained what 17 and 18 looked like. I'm sure the theme is somewhere on RUclips. They changed the music of that part and now it plays the dragon theme (or a portion of it) that you hear when Vegeta used final flash or during the final clash with Gohan and Cell. Not a bad change but something I noticed awhile back.

And keep in mind, this is only in regards to the RE-DUB. From what I've heard, there's very, very, VERY minute and miniscule differences between the re-dub on box sets, from music and dialogue timing and sometimes certain music tracks being replaced.
Again, I'm not talking from "OG TV broadcast" to "Re-dub", I'm talking from the SAME RE-DUB to different releases of it. From the Orange Bricks, to the Level Sets, to the Blu-ray's, to the Dragon Boxes, and the 30th Anniversary set.
As if that wasn't bad enough, even the "OG TV broadcast" has different versions within of itself. Firstly, you have the original TV broadcast that was aired on Toonami in the United States. This broadcast was actually made available on VHS tapes, usually referred to as the "edited tapes" released by FUNimation.
The mindset here is that FUNi released 2 versions of the VHS releases that costed 2 different prices. One was labeled as the "uncut" tape, and was higher in retail price. Next was the "edited" tape, which was lower in price.
As the names suggest, the edited tape is the same version that was aired on TV, visual/audio edits and all, meanwhile the uncut tape is using the original footage, with some more raunchy dialogue to incentivize more people to buy the more pricey and grittier uncut tape over the lower-cost edited tape.
These edited tapes are somewhat of a rarity nowadays, but can still be found. The problem is that a lot of tapes ONLY got uncut releases and never received edited ones, meaning that the ones that DIDN'T were stuck to TV broadcasts only.
If you thought it couldn't get any more asinine, THERE'S MORE. Boy oh boy, there's always more.
Many people are aware of the Westwood dub. To save myself some sanity, I'll heavily summarize:
In Canada and the United Kingdom, Dragon Ball Z retained a unique dub exclusive to their territory that had the Ocean Group cast from back in the day for the Cell arc to Boo. In terms of uncut numbering, in the UK, this Westwood dub was used from episodes 123-291, meanwhile Canada got the dub much later, starting with episode 183.
But what did they get before episode 123/183? Well, in both territories, they got the Ocean dub for episodes 1-67. As for the UK, they got FUNimation's original edited dub for episodes 68-122. As for Canada, they got the same thing for episodes 68-182. Seems simple.
However, these broadcasts of FUNi's edited dub are NOT the exact same as the one aired in the United States. Both of these broadcasts for FUNi's dub have unique censorship. I don't know much about the censorship done in the UK, but in Canada, a few lines are changed; lines that are in neither the uncut nor edited releases, certain lines are also just straight MISSING from other versions except for the one made for Canada, and many extra sound effects are added to the show that were never there before in other versions.
So yeah, the "OG" dub isn't exempt from bullshit itself.

    • @DarkYuy
      @DarkYuy 11 месяцев назад +2

We got originally up to the start of Goku's fight with Ginyu being ocean dub in Canada. It then moved to funimations dub after that to just before Gohan goes SSJ 2, that's when it switched back to the Ocean groups cast which despite not getting Ian Corlet or Peter Kelaimis to voice Goku, they had the late Kirby Morrow voice him had the better voices. The dub quality was poor, though, as funimation didn't provide enough funds to properly dub it and get it edited well so the lip sync falls off quite often. They apparently were also forced to dub Kai through ocean group but it was never aired.

This sort of revised scripting of Funimation’s dub for Dragon Ball isn’t restricted to the tv series either. There’s a line in the Blu Ray copy of Dbz movie 5 (Cooler’s Revenge) where Karin and Yajirobe are talking to each other after Gohan grabs some senzu beans from them. I can’t recall what the line is precisely but there was a back and forth between Yajirobe and Karin about who the “bean daddy” was and it’s almost completely different from its original early 2000’s dvd version of the film. I remember the audio effects in 3 key moments.
1: When Trunks powers up to Ultra Super Saiyan and then makes eye contact with Cell, it originally made that same sound effect as when he would slowmo kill people with his sword. Then in later releases that is gone so it's just Cell being afraid of Trunks grunting.
2: Same thing as 1 except when Vegeta is challenging Buu while Piccolo carries the boys away. "That's right! Your fight is with me!" also had a sound effect on top of it to emphasize him pulling Buu's attention away, now just silent.
3: Arguably the WORST example of this. The Instant Transmission Kamehameha against Cell. Goku flies up in the air and starts saying the line. "ka... me... ha..." and then it cuts to Krillin saying he's bluffing, but then you hear the 2nd "me..." over top, timed with Krillin's changing in reaction before Goku disappears and reappears to do the last "HA" and shoot the blast. In later releases, the 2nd "me..." is REMOVED, so all we hear is "Ka-me-ha-HA"

Two really cool ones I noticed in the same scene: when Cell punches Piccolo out then blasts him into the water. In the OG dub version, right when Cell punches Piccolo out, the punch sound is really low-pitched to emphasize the scene going into slow-mo, along with a cool echo on Piccolo's voice. Then when Cell blasts him, there's a cool reversed sound effect when it cuts to Goku and Gohan sensing what just happened. Both are gone in the "remastered" dub.

It's actually shocking how much awesome sound design and attention to detail is lost in the remastered releases. I also kind of wonder if Voice actors get paid per line at Funimation.
I know Christopher Sabat is the voice director, ADR engineer, and line producer working for Funimation.
My guess is all the added off-screen dialogue was to spruce up the salary but getting more hours for VA's working at the company.
Interestingly, Vegeta Piccolo and Goku likely spend the longest in the recording booths, and Sabat does a lot of technical work.
It's not unreasonable to think that he would want to be paid more by adding some fluff where it wasn't required so he could get a better pay, but that's mere speculation!
According to the internet though employees are paid $80 per hour, so probably not paid per line, that might be ridiculous.
Still it's feasible to think it was to do with more work hours more pay.

Nah, it really is because they think that American kids can't watch silence for more than five seconds. Hell, they even confirmed that they had "punch-up" writers back then that would go through the scripts and start writing down jokes. Yeah, because they thought there needed to be a gag here and there.
What's weird is that they didn't have this for yu yu Hakushou. Then again, they didn't watch the undubbed DBZ before dubbing, Justin Cook actually took the time to watch every single episode of Yu yu Hakushou before picking the dub cast.

@@Martialartfruituser Punching up dialogue isn’t inherently a bad practice, even in anime dubs. It’s just that some dubs, like the older DBZ Funimation dub, went overboard adding and changing far too much.
Everyone quotes banger lines, jokes, and snarky comebacks from 4Kids’s dub of Pokémon for instance. Despite the rampant censorship and errors and mistranslations here and there, they had some good writers with good jokes that made the show more entertaining to watch for English audiences. Eric Stuart (VA for Brock and James) mentioned these jokes were mainly for the parents watching the show with their kids, since most kids probably wouldn’t get most of them until they were older.
Most modern anime dubs still punch up the dialogue but only in small bursts, when it can slide or still feel appropriate, which is the perfect balance imo.
Super Broly for instance has some minor extra lines or jokes that weren’t in the Japanese version that helped elevate it in English for me, and it wasn’t anywhere near as intrusive or excessive as it was in the old Funimation dub.
Also, Yu Yu Hakusho did punch up the dialogue. A lot of its quips were added or reworded from the Japanese script to sound snappier in the dub. They just didn’t go about it the same way the old Funi DBZ dub did with their weird “no silence allowed” rule.

    • @Martialartfruituser
      @Martialartfruituser 11 месяцев назад +5

@@komarunaegi7460 I agree, its not a bad practice because even modern movies do this. (Patton Oswolt has a great routine about it) However, the problem comes when it comes at the cost of scene and character.
Like I understand that Eric thought it was nice for the adults, but for the rest of us? It was kind of torture to hear Kaiba insult Joey again after YEARS of character development made Kaiba a little softer. Or hear the senshi make fun of Serena to the point where fanfic writers for YEARS have used it as an excuse for Serena breaking up with her team so she can bang Harry Potter or Trunks or Vegeta. Heck it also is bad when you are watching a great moment of silence that fills you with worry, only to hear Tristan shout some one-liner.
The side benefit is that these lines make for great moments in abridge series.

Freeza then tells 'Mr. Dodoria to get his lazy bones up and follow them'. For whatever reason that particular line read stuck with me because when the orange bricks came out and Freeza's line was instead "Dodoria, what are you doing?! Get off your fat butt and follow them now!", something felt different/off and I could never put my finger on why. My child brain was adamant about what it heard while older me chalked it up to the Mandela effect. On this day some 20-odd years later, I finally found the episode (and line read) I saw that day on TV. I had known about the Ocean dub for years but it never once occurred to me that the scene I remembered was from that.
