The time disparity would've been easily explained if they said 5 minutes for Frieza are not 5 minutes on earth. But then they made it even more ridiculous with the tournament of power in Super and also never cared to explain lol
@@versebuchanan512 when was that explained? And did they ever explain why the tournament of power had like 15 minutes left and it takes like 10 episodes to run down those 15min?
Myself and my team spent countless hours trying to make this video the best it could possibly be. We're all very proud of it! And would like to say thank you for taking the time to check it out! It means the world to us!
Love the content and kudos to everyone that worked on these videos. We all truly appreciate re-living this series with everyone else weekly when this kind of stuff happens
Krillin really was the MVP of this arc. Taking charge of the situation, planning the strategies, facing adversity over insurmountable odds, all so he could revive his dead friends. He even pines to get married a few times during this arc. His death, and friendship with Goku was handled even more beautifully the second time around. This truly was his best arc.
Frieza terrified me as a kid. Every time he was on screen it was terrifying. Gohan and the others weren't fighting to beat him, they were just doing their best to survive until the end of the story. Every episode Goku wasn't on-screen was a grueling experience for me and the ultimate payoff when our main man showed up was what made me fall in love with this series
I legit had nightmares even into my late teen years. I can't explain it, there's just something so...astonishingly horrific about him. I'm literally 21 and I _still_ genuinely terrified of him
Yes!! Frieza gave the audience this sense of fear. I think the biggest horror was when Goku contemplated giving up. Like the Z fighters whole fight with Frieza just seemed hopeless. IMO I don’t think Akira ever topped Frieza. The other villains were alright but they never struck fear into the audience and made you fear for the Z fighters life. Vegeta was literally in tears When he realize he was nowhere near Frieza’s level. He knew he was a dead man walking. Frieza just doesn’t beat you physically he does it mentally first. Merciless, sadistic, Evil, narcissistic sociopath.
"Kindness too, can be hopeless." This was a hard truth for me to learn growing up. I've always tried to be kind to people, to see the best in them, to give them chance after chance to grow. I had to learn that some people, no matter how hard you try, will not change, and it's okay to accept that and let them go.
Sadly, the older you get the more you become aware of this reality. “If you’re not a liberal by the time you’re 20 you have no heart, if you’re still a liberal by the time you’re 35, you have no brain” Most folks will spend their younger years trying to be sympathetic and caring towards people and yes if we were all that way the world would be a better place. But eventually we learn that whenever there is kindness there will be people to take advantage of it. “True humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less” once you embrace that you’ll realize it’s okay to be kind to and thoughtful of others, but also necessary to be mindful of how they may wish to take advantage of you.
I've rather recently had to come to this very decision myself. With my very own father. I realized he just wouldn't stop no matter whom tells him to, to change for the better. However, he continued being himself and I've since distanced myself further from him upon finally realizing this.
@@thiccjerry5232 Honestly, this can be said about any Anime that peopel likes, whether sub or dub, it's still the same story that we can all enjoy, despite the few haters.
I love how this arc solidified the Goku modes for the remainder of the show. He's either out of commission, dead, in training, in transit or saving everyone.
@@justinarzola4584what? In Red Ribbon he was very active, interacted with secondary characters, went on adventures and fought multiple villains before the final fight. In King Piccolo he had an entire emotional revenge arc and a roadtrip with Yajirobe before the final fight.
@@justinarzola4584 nah i dont get what you mean at all, in red ribbon all the action was focused around him and in King Piccolo it was lesser but he had a seperate story while the others were doing their own thing, which would have been great if Z did that too. Anyway not that big of a deal but i just dont get your take
@@wreday720 I meant the part in the red ribbon arc where he was beaten by tao and went to korin's tower and came back,I think the main difference was when Goku was taken out of the story in the og series he was still doing his own thing while he was off screen during parts of z before showing up but it's still the same story device.
I had to pause the video when you started the Goku vs. Frieza fight. See, in Italy, both the original voice actors that gave life to Goku and Frieza passed away a few years after GT ended airing, so hearing those voices again between all of the other talents, even for a second, it's still enough to make me shed a tear. Bravo to the editors!
This arc really makes Vegeta look amazing. His character shines so strong, and even when he's losing he feels competent and its still super fun to watch. If we EVER got another arc that lets Veggie shine like this, I might die from bliss.
@@n00013 I swr you mfs don’t even actually understand what you’re reading. Granolah vs Vegeta was a tie, Granolah literally was about to put all his life force into a blast and kill himself to kill Vegeta, and that was a Vegeta who couldn’t even properly utilise ultra ego because he wasn’t ruthless enough. And this was a granolah who had just smoked Goku. Then all 3 of them got cooked by gas, and both goku and vegeta get cooked by Frieza. He didn’t get done great and deserved better, should have had it so Vegeta beat Granolah and then Gas shows up, but he didn’t get done dirty or embarrassed, he got the same treatment as Goku
@@A.H.goose1EXACTLY! The granolah saga’s theme has literally been that the new strongest of the universe is going to emerge. All of the possible candidates we thought, as readers, were literally vegeta’s matches in order. Are people stupid? Do they thing ego is so strong that it is not only going to beat granolah, a titan of strength and even more so of technique and talent, but then beat gas, an even stronger foe; both of which used wishes to be so powerful, and then even beat black frieza, a force of power so great that it completely and utterly outclasses every single player on the battlefield throughout the saga? Ultra ego fully outclassing even a single one of these opponents doesn’t make sense. They can simply inflict too much damage for the forms immense hax to catch up. I’d say that ultra ego is actually executed extremely well. Not a walking L, and one of the most well written forms, to me, in all of dragon ball.
@1:19:02 thank you for including a snippet of Mario Castañeda’s amazing Goku. There are no words to describe how much DBZ means for us Latinamericans and just how special that Latin Spanish dub was for all of us. Back when the show was premiering new episodes in Mexico in the late 90s it was airing on a National free-over-the-air channel in prime time (8pm) and it’s ratings rivaled those of mainstream programming aimed at adults at the same time. DBZ is almost a religion here. Thank you for representing us.
Same here on Brazil man, DBZ is so iconic in South America.

OMG that gave me chills and put me in tears of emotion. Yo desde que tengo memoria recuerdo a Goku, desde mis 4 años que lo vi llegar a la TV Argentina y el enorme impacto de verlo crecer y la euforia que causó cada diálogo brillante de la voz Mario Castañeda.
No, thank YOU, Latin american audience, for keeping the series going for hardcore fans from all corners of the world, for so long - there was such a long period of radio silence for new DBZ related things. There were gaps in game releases that Latin american game makers and modders filled with AMAZING amounts of fan-made games and content/characters for pre-existing games thought un-moddable, artists spewing forth amazing webcomics, writers drafting alternate takes on existing stories, etc... You guys were the backbone of the fandom, keeping it alive after the run ended in the US/Europe. I would not have stayed on top of DB/DBZ my whole life had it not been for you guys being there to pick up the slack when there weren't any official releases for such a long period of time. You're owed a debt of gratitude, yourself.
Fiiiiiiinally, someone acknowledging that Krillin is, in fact, the real hero of the Namek saga. Outclassed and outnumbered every step of the way, he still takes care of Gohan and carries out the mission as if his life depended on it. And he didn't need an entire arc of self-realisation to come to that conclusion either like big daddy Piccolo. He does it because it's who he is. Big love to the K man ❤
And if you really think about it, if it wasn’t for Krillin’s friendship with Goku, Frieza never would have chosen to kill him in petty revenge… which means Goku would have never gone Super Saiyan and saved the universe. Krillin really is the GOAT of DragonBall
Yeah and I love that Krillins technique and move set allow him to be dangerous even when totally out matched. Like dead ass could have killed Frieza in his second form when Vegeta and Gohan couldn't. Like imagine when he's impaled, he grabs Frieza by his other horn and slams a Destructo Disk into his neck. Cut off his tail so why not his head? Then they pull his severed head out of Krillin heal him and go home. Then Krillin is known Galaxy wide as Kriller the Killer the Legendary Super Human! Lol.
Cosmonaut Variety Hour has a shorter analysis of this arc where he makes the exact point- what krillin lakcs in raw power he makes up for in tactical thinking and planning.
People have no idea how unbelievably hyped this saga was back in the day when it first aired. For over a year every time goku would get to namek and then the series would reset to raditz. Then one day the trailer on toonami dropped for 70 new episodes , Peter Cullen doing the trailer voice work and at the end Tom says “good things come to those that wait”……fucking goosebumps every time man!! ONLY TOONAMI

I think your Dragon Ball Z reviews are the best videos you have done in your career. I always thought your videos are pieces of art, but this reviews takes it to the next level even, with how you describe your emotions, etc. This watch was an amazing ride: hype, interesting information, narrative insight, emotions... I cried at least 3 times while watching the review. Thank you Mark, keep doing what you do, you are the best.
Agreed. I kind of stopped regularly watching Mark a while back, because I had just grown uninterested in Super after a while, but having heard about the TFS Buu saga clips in his review of the first half of the Buu saga, I came back and hot damn I'm I glad I did. I've always been a big DBZ fan, with the great characters like Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, and so on and I've also always tried to look at deeper messages and themes, but for these reviews, Mark has taken it to the next level and "Even further beyond!" Truly great analysis and even I'm thinking about some aspects of these sagas in ways I haven't before. I can't wait to see what he has in store for the second part of the Buu saga review and I'm already trying to think of what he's going to touch on.
I've seen many popular RUclipsrs who usually recite the story and add in sprinkles of symbolism, writing tropes, personal preferences, etc. This guy though, brings up the main points(mostly) and hammers down why it works with the little things and goes until detail, he then adds the subtle and themes and adds it altogether. I appreciate his style, it's in depth. Takes a good amount of work and smarts.
1:19:02 The addition of Latin American Spanish Goku saying he is the legendary Super Saiyan actually got me right in the feels. I remember watching that moment with great anticipation back when I was 13 living in Mexico and I still feel chills with that moment today.
Heard that's the right translation. The western studios change it (You can look up the difference sentences for yourself because I'm falling asleep right now) to make it sound more cool. Like "To Allies .... and nightmares to you" or some shit and in the Japanese (and apparently the spanish version) Son Goku is finally embracing his Sayajin side. It's crazy how much gets lost in the original series. Almost makes me wanting watch every piece of media in its original language
Toriyama just past and I came back here because I really appreciated how you described his work. I’m really grateful that you took the time to deep dive into this
I gotta say the showing clips with all the different languages is a genius move. It makes you feel like you're celebrating something you love with not just yourself and the writer but rather the entire world. It's pure hype, a way to make dragonball even more exciting. Good work dude
What a celebration of a story that helped shape so many of us. No matter what version you grew up with, I think we can all appreciate just how meaningful these stories are. You and your team have outdone yourselves Mark!!
1:19:02 Man, my heart skipped a beat there. It's no secret that Dragon Ball is huge in Latinamerica, the dub being one of the major reasons for it. I loved those transitions showcasing the different dubs the series has gotten over the years. Really highlights just how big outside of Japan this franchise is.
Also in Italy. Hearing the voice of the late Z and GT Italian Goku voice actor Paolo Torrisi was special to me. Honestly, it's amazing how accurate the Italian dub is, in spite of the censorship. If you remove the name changes and the "never say die" euphemism (most of the time, the words "death", "to die" and "to kill" are replaced with "loss", "to go on to a better life" and "to eliminate") that dub is pretty much spot on
The Frieza arc is just my favorite, pacing, action and the tension. When Frieza shows up right behind them for the first time, I actually screamed. Also favorite anime fight, Goku vs Frieza.
I don't see how Goku taking like 10 episodes to fly to Namek, then like another 5 or so to heal after Ginyu to heal as good pacing myself. Made Goku feel like a side Character as all Krillin and Gohan did was cry and complain. I get it, "it builds tension" it also builds filler.
@@kwisatzhaderach9591 if other things are distracting you from the min character (which there was alot going on) it works. It’s literally Avengers: infinity war…
Goku fighting Frieza at 50% was terrifying to me as a kid. We the fans and Z Fighters on King Kai’s planet thinking Goku wasn’t goin all out he still had the KaioKen but King Kai drops the bombshell saying “he’s been using it this whole time” and still getting beaten down..damn my heart sunk as a kid
God @TotallyNotMark this is absolute cinema, the edits, the structure, the script it's all absolutely spectacular. You have continued to decimate expectations with every new release. Your hard work is noticed, your editors hard work is noticed. And it is immensely appreciated. For the joy and comfort your videos bring on dark days, the comfort of hearing someone just talk about the thing they love so unbelievably passionately, we thank you
The Kai version of Goku leaving the Rejuvenation Chamber has always made me so hyped. Super Dragon Soul swelling up and getting me prepared to see the fight of my life. That is something that always stuck with me. Also the part at 1:18:36 that flashes back to all of the dubs somehow hits even harder than the one for Goku vs. Vegeta. RIP Christopher Ayres. You will always be Lord Freeza no matter what.
@@theycallmeandresdude.. seriously I know even they can tell that Mario is on par with original japanese, no wonder why they put it at the end with most screen time, I almost cried remembering my childhood
Funny story, as a kid, the Frieza arc was my introduction the Dragon Ball franchise and...I thought Krillan was a child. In my young mind, I assumed Krillan was Gohan's mate from school who went on the journey with him to Namek. Imagine my shock when Frieza kills him in front of Gohan and Goku. I thought, "holy shit! They blew up a child on TV!" I then proceeded to get hella invested for the rest of series lol.
Krillin has a bit of a Tolkien's hobbit vibe. Feels like a child but it's not. In Tolkien's stories hobbits retain the joy and wonder of childhood somehow into adulthood and it runs thru their culture. The other people that get to meet them along the way are anyways surprised and amused by them, and can get along with almost everybody. Krillin is kinda like that too. Vibes with Gohan (a small child), piccolo (a weird demon-namekian superman), vibes with the androids and can even collaborate with Vegeta
There's a famous Hebrew saying that goes: "Those who are compassionate to the brutal people, will become brutal towards those who are compassionate", and I think that saying encaptures tremendously well the message that you have talked about in the last part of the video.
Idk if Mark mentions this but.... When Goku goes Super Saiyan his speech bubbles are all sharp and pointed. A style usually used for villians. Small detail but amazing when you think of it
The use of the many dubs across the world is just phenomenal. Not only it illustrates just how much of a cultural impact this work is, as someone who is not primarily an english speaker it's always fun to recognize my language amidst the other ones. Which is to say the overall quality of this series of reviews is quite literally pushing this channel's and everyone's talent to their absolut limits. I can't wait for the next video
As an italian kid raised with this show, it genuinely gave me chills to hear Goku's voice actor in the international dubs montage. Paolo Torrisi was a superb voice actor, and a hero too. He died in 2005 for a liver complication, but he went away without anyone noticing or suspecting a thing. Legend says that when he was hospitalized, in his final moments, he got a call from his mom. He suddenly turned on the Goku voice to reassure his old mom that everything was good. He died the next day. His legacy is unmeasurable, for he accompanied generations of kids in their childhood. A lot of international dubs have hit the point in Z, but I suggest you to listen to the italian one, for its intensity, gravitas and energy. DragonBall is a work of love, wether you are reading it, watching it, dubbing it or animating it. Long live the king!
Sono uno storico, ma una storia come quella di Paolo Torrisi che dal letto dell'ospedale riassicura la madre con la voce di Goku non mi importa sapere se è vera o no, ci voglio solo credere perchè è bellissima
1:18:41 RIP Chris Aryes. You helped bring the menace of Manga Freeza out in Kai where it was missing in the original Funimation dub. Love and laughter, always.
This is easily the best dbz arc. The stakes were high, every character had value (no matter how small), Goku had the most epic fight, super saiyan was built up incredibly, and Frieza was at his absolute best.
55:38 I absolutely love the compassion in Marks voice. It's like Gohan is a wrestler and Mark is the Ring Announcer hyping the crowd up for his entrance. Keep up the great work!!!
The Frieza arc was the Zenith of Dragon Ball in terms of narrative and storytelling. It built upon, and flowed from, everything that came before it so organically that it felt like both the logical and natural continuation AND conclusion to what began in the Saiyan arc.
Holy crap at 1:18:40 I loved that editing and it made me so hyped that you included the VAs lines of multiple languages, when I heard Mario Castañeda's voice of Goku (Mexico dub) it made me teared just out of all of the nostalgia DBZ is BIG in Mexico so a lot of Mexicans know this part of the series by memory Thank you Mark and team for adding this it is something small but it means a lot to get recognized by someone in this awesome analysis
1:18:57 I can't stress enough the amount of chills this send down my spine. Hearing the German voice of Goku in the compilation almost made me cry. Thank you so much for doing this.
Same with me when I heard "YO SOY EL SUPER SAIYAJIN GOKU" in Latinoamerican Spanish DUB! (I'm from Argentina).. Goku's voice is so iconic no matter the language..
@@estebancantero4751 I think there are better snippets than "ADESSO MI HAI FATTO ARRABBIARE" from the Italian dub, but I was really hapoy to hear Paolo Torrisi's voice again, 19 years from his passing
I feel you, I will always love the german dub of DBZ, actually much better than the english dub personally, even tho that the english voices are still good. But the chosen voices of the gerdub are sooooo perfect!
Thanks to Mark and TFS, I can say I can remember how much and why I love Goku. Thank you, you are articulating what most of us 10 to 15 year kids felt, when we first saw these sagas and it is awesome.

I kinda feel like each one builds on each other. I love the saiyan arc because people actually die with some level of consequence. I love the freeze arc for ssj, the best villain of the series, and the natural way it flows from the events of the previous arc. I love the cell arc because cell, (not the best villain) is a combo of all the villains of the series, the passing the torch to gohan, the character payoffs of vegita and trunks, and the payoff of piccolo and kami, among other things. Then there is the Buu arc, which has its enjoyable moments… Fusion, ssj3, vegita sacrificing himself, a return to comedy.

1:50:11 "Sometimes there are those who words alone cannot reach" Mark you are so good at this, breaking down the themes of the story and explicitly using the same words that would be a mirror/trigger in the Cell Saga for Gohan. I got chills when I heard this part.
Same. When Mark said this, I was instant transmitted to that moment. Chills down my spine. If Mark commends Toriyama for creating excellent connections between arcs, hasn't Mark done a great job here himself?
Watching these last two review videos really remind me of my own personal values that I’ve lost along the way in the last few years. It makes me sad for the optimism I used to have, but happy that I gained that undying desire to be kind and show respect to others no matter the cause. I feel like that has genuinely made massive impacts in my life that I take for granted now a days. I’ve learned so much from two alien dudes beating the shit out of each other on an exploding planet it’s incredible. Thank you for reminding me of what I lost, and reminding me that I can regain it as well
19:11 honestly, I like the idea behind this scene. The fact that it took a little luck of all things to not get them killed feels realistic, something that could happen, but so rare that you know they're not getting this kind of lucky break again.
Its also not completely unrealistic because of the size of the fish, and vegeta is sitting still. It's not unreasonable for a large fish to see a bird in the sky and try to jump and grab it. Yeah, it's a bit of a stretch, but it's not impossible
1:18:38 Thank you for this montage. This is nothing short of amazing. This went so hard and the fact you included several dubbed versions made it look complete and awesome to the point that you have managed to connect all of us fans under a single banner. :D
On the note of pacing, as a child in the 90s whos only way of consuming this show was VHS releases, the tapes stopped (for a very long time) with Goku just arriving and taking out Recoome. and the only thirst quencher I had was the "Next time on DBZ" with Vegeta rambling on about "its not possible, it cant be, i wont believe it, a super saiyan?!" I must have watched that tape 100 times hoping that somehow there would be some blonde haired buffoon hiding somewhere in it! :D
Holy shit, that Mario Castañeda's scream saying "Yo soy el Super Saiyajin Goku!" brought back so many memories... Even a tear to my eye. Awesome video man, greetings from Mexico!
1:18:36 This moment... Made me tear, made me going back to the moment when i was a kid, like the first time I watch this saga... Pure epicness... And thank you to put all the others dubs of dragon ball, especially the moment where goku says he is the super Saiyajin in the latin american dub
Ugh. 1:19:24 hearing the Spanish dubs just brought back memories of watching this show with my uncle. Such an amazing review. Words cannot fathom how much this show means to me, but your reviews help capture the feeling we as fans have with this show.
It's funny how we got so used to hearing that DBZ is simple and that is has "no story" that some of us ended up accepting that "truth" and simply anjoy the series as if it were mindless fun. HOWEVER this video is a wake-up call to many of us who fell under this falacy that DBZ is shallow and it is only about fighting. Thanks, Mark. This video is not just good, it is NEEDED!
@@JotenksWell I'm not saying that it has no other aspects. But the entire series after a certain point is centered on fighting. Beating the opponent that wants to destroy the world pretty much
@@Ash_Wen-li yes but you phrased it as dbz only being centered around fighting when it isnt, beating the opponent is the goal but i wouldnt call the story purely based around it, dbz isnt deep, but it is “wide” as in all the characters have their own expanding worlds and stories evolving throughout the show to reach said goal of beating the opponent
@@JotenksWell I'd say with the Namek Saga as the exception, pretty much everything the characters do is in service to being able to fight the villain. Even the search for the Dragon balls is trivialized later on. I'm not denying that different characters have different goals and arcs. That would be silly and I disagree with anyone that has that take I can contrast it to One Piece as an example because everyone knows about it. Luffy's goal isn't to be the strongest. It's to find One Piece. There's also a heavy side plot about toppling the World Government and learning the mysteries of the Void Century. And each character has their own personal goals that give them a reason for going on a journey. Defeating an enemy is rarely a goal for the characters aside from Zoro. Now I'm not saying this as an argument to say OP is better just contrasting how DBZ's main plot revolves around fights, where One Piece has other plotlines which heavily feature lots of fights. This isn't really meant as a criticism though. Just an observation.

"Yo soy el super saiyajin Goku" Thanks a lot for including that part with the Latin American dub, a tear rolled down my eye as I had a flashback to 1999 as a kid who didn´t have to deal with anxiety or depression
This arc really had such a unique dynamic, especially up until the Ginyu Force appeared. Then the fight with Freezer... I always loved him as a villain. Genuinely terrifying when I was a kid and he really felt like the one villain no one can overcome. Unfortunately I can't remember my reaction to seeing SSJ Goku for the first time but that might mean that I was completely mind blown. That whole build up was amazing. The writing in this arc is a 10/10.
The Freeza Saga was my favourite in DBZ. Because of it's epic moments, fights, stakes and first of all good driven story. The moment when Goku stands in super-sayan mode was perfect. Freeza at that moment was a really big a threat to the main characters At that moment anime made me feel more empathy for the characters in the moment of failure... An that why i love this part of DB franchise so much!
1:19:00 Gotta be honest. Wasnt expectiong the italian voice of Goku (Paolo Torrisi) in this video. Considering thats the first voice I've ever heard of Goku, it got me in tears.
Bro I’m so glad I found a page that goes deeper into the shows element, deeper into even the little interaction, clarifying the meaning behind everything. when I watch shows and movies I watch from a perspective as this just appreciate your page bro
I legit think these last 2 videos have been your best. The writing, editing, and just everything about them have been genuinely jaw dropping. Which makes sense since dragon ball seems to be one of your most beloved mangas of all time, so ofc you’d give these specific videos the love they deserve. Keep it up dude, I can’t wait for the android/cell saga
Your presentation of "GOKU VS FREEZA" with the animation, with the music and all the different languages literally had me riled up like a goddamn caveman, clenched fist and ear-to-ear smile
Your showcasing of the different voice actors/actress of Goku and his fight against Freeza sent chills down my spine and made me remember just how important this show is to people globally and literally brought me to tears.
Using Mario Castañedas voice lines for not only the proclamation of Goku calling himself THE Super Saiyan, and for part of the Kamehameha, makes me so appalled that wherever you are in the world, I see so many people realize how amazing the Mexican dub of dragon ball z is. Thanks you so much Mark, SSS tier video. Can't wait for next week's.
I think the Elder Namek having the power-up ability, while certainly giving somewhat unearned power, does serve to elevate both him and the Namekian people. Showing Guru's importance, benevolence, wisdom, and the unique magical abilities of his people, compared to Earthlings. So I did not really mind. It speaks to the imagination.
Every piece of Dragon Ball Z is iconic really. But these first two Sagas are so overtly well written and executed that it’s no surprise whatsoever that these are what cemented this series on a completely different level than before. Just simply brilliant work.
Mark, I've been a subscriber for years and I LOVE how your dedication, appreciation and love for the material elevate and shine thru all the videos you and your team create. But dude, your little rant about Nail snickering at Freeza at 46:00 was the funniest thing I've heard on your videos and I laughed my ass off. You said what I've been thinking for years!
I started with your review with the android saga and I must say it was phenomenally well done, I just had to go to the beginning! The way you show so much respect and love for probably the biggest series of my childhood is what got my attention. You sir deserve a like and I'm a fan of your style of reviews, a new subscriber. Thank you for taking so much time and making one of the best, if not the best reviews I have ever seen!
1:18:41 This whole sequence got me chills inside with all the different dubbings included, insane editing. Also, what song is used at around 30:29? It's a banger but I can't seem to find it that easy.
Seriously, I dislike AMVs or any edits of sorts, idky ... but this sequence? It could be much longer and a full fledged AMV and I would pump that sh*t into my veins
I saw this arc when I was a kid on DBZK, and it was my first introduction to DB, it got me watching the whole thing until Freezer's defeat on Namek. It was one of the first ever anime I ever watched weekly. It's definitely one of the best battle shonen arcs ever.
This is easily the best video I've ever watched from your channel and team. The explanation, the parallels everything was amazing. I even shed a tear during the juxtaposition of Goku's view's on life and what's it like to be the starry eyed kid trying to make the world a better place. If i have one teeny tiny gripe, it would only be this; not hearing Schemmel scream his anger towards Freeza for not understanding the value of life, even his own with the so powerful "You Fool!". As a kid I felt so angry towards Freeza for not understanding how his own pride could keep him from understanding the place he was in. 10/10 will definitely be falling asleep to this video until the Android Saga.
1:19:06 as a Latin American, it was great and totally awesome you used that part of the dialouge with the voice of the talented Mario Castañeda in that mix of scenes of Goku with the character saying "Yo Soy el Super Saiyajin Goku", that moment was epic with the dialogue and tone in my country for decades. Great totally man that choice, as this great and awesome analysis of this arc was made too.
As always the unrestrained and genuine passion you have for the subject matter manages to make me emotional in a way that any other conversation on the topic can. You are a fantastic example of film critque and breakdown and I can't wait to see more from you.
@@chemicalpoisons he let him killing 19 think he was the man and got him humbled by a blonde teenager in a skirt. Then went to train, got big headed and let cell become perfect and then got destroyed. Then his son got destroyed. Then his pride got destroyed when hogan surpassed him. Cell pissed on his pride when he almost killed his son making vegeta crash out and having to be saved by Gohan. Which ended up crippling gohan and letting cell get the one up on them all. He also got his ass beat by them cell jrs
You've inspired me to analyze stories more and look deeply into the writing and notice things I never considered before about particular scenes or chosen dialog
I used to think that the cell/android saga was the pinnacle of dragon ball but after thinking about it I have to admit, the way the entire series built up to this along with the absolutely breathtaking climax really separates it from the rest of the series. It’s pretty incredible how seamless the entire series feels up to the super saiyan transformation, considering the insane amount of change that happens throughout all of the arcs
Flat out one of the best story arc's in all of media. Emotional, funny, and dramatic. Very few piece's of art have ever come close to the magic and power that this arc has on me. Love it
54:48 is my personal favorite point of the reviews. How even though we’ve seen/read this story thousands of times, the glimpses into the future still give my chills. Testament to how well this review is put together.
G0ddamn this hit me so hard in feels. The work you and your team put in to the research for the animators ALWAYS impresses, but the multilingual dubs to introduce the Goku v. Frieza fight. Holy sh*t. This whole thing. Holy sh*t!
I've been watching Dragon Ball through here in preparation for the Buu review. I just want to commend you on not only opening my eyes to all of the subtleties and nuances that exist throughout this series, but also for your stellar timing in leading into clips and making them poignant, but also funny. I don't know how to describe it, but I just love the way you lead into something and show exactly what it means without the need for it to be set up. Like you cut out all the filler. Totally Not Mark Kai?
I am incredibly grateful for this series of reviews. Not only does it analyze a series I've always liked but I am also learning more about the details that need to be considered when telling a story. Especially one with this many moving parts.
This is probably my favorite story in ALL of Dragon Ball as it has one of my favorite villains of all time that pushes Goku to what I feel was his absolute limit as the protagonist. I loved this arc ever since I watched it fully in Kai 10 years ago and in the original Japanese Version of Z nearly 8-ish years ago when it was free on Hulu. No matter how you watch it, this story is an absolute thrill ride and I can’t wait to hear your passionate thoughts on at Mark.👍 Edit: WOW! Your love and respect for this story/franchise was already shown throughout the many videos and essays you’ve done over the years, but THIS video I think has presented the MOST heart and soul I’ve ever heard from you analyzing ANYTHING throughout this channel. Much like the Freiza arc itself, I think you’re reviews have reached a new peak of quality that I hope won’t stop anytime soon. Kudos to you and your hard-working team and see you here again for the next arc. Who knows maybe the next DBZ saga review can reach heights beyond a peak, perhaps even…perfection.
I love this arc so much. It is the true meaning of Terror and Hopeless when it comes to a story element, but it is always the best way of showing Rage via the Super Saiyan. The Super Saiyan Transformation is still one of, if not my personal favorite scene in anime. I love it so much. You and your team have outdone yourself with this video!
Found your channel a few days ago, started with the OG Dragon Ball video and going through Z-- as the biggest Dragon Ball fan who needs no refreshing on it, your videos are still amazing and entertaining! Enjoying them. But I just had to stop halfway through this video because I now know who you sound like-- you sound like Jin from English Dub of Yu-Yu Hakusho, just without the accent. Lol Keep up the good work, man!
1:50:00 This message about no matter how nice you are there are people out there who'll hate on you and can't understand the love that you've given them
I’m shocked Mark was able to summarize this massive arc in under 5 minutes
Frieza dosent know how too tell time unlike Mark
The time disparity would've been easily explained if they said 5 minutes for Frieza are not 5 minutes on earth. But then they made it even more ridiculous with the tournament of power in Super and also never cared to explain lol
@@AlexRN It IS easily explained. Frieza can't estimate time well. I know that's the joke, but it works perfectly well in canon too lol.
@@versebuchanan512 when was that explained? And did they ever explain why the tournament of power had like 15 minutes left and it takes like 10 episodes to run down those 15min?
@@AlexRNwhat’s there to explain? It was stretched out by having all those repeated moments and pauses for convos
Myself and my team spent countless hours trying to make this video the best it could possibly be. We're all very proud of it! And would like to say thank you for taking the time to check it out! It means the world to us!

Will do Mark! Love this series and your work!😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
THANK YOU SO MUCH MARK!!! I cant wait to see these videos blow up more!!!
it really shows the amount of effort you guys are putting into this, remember that sleep is a good thing!
This truly was his best arc.
it was gohan tbh he saved little green N He Came in clutch with his power ups n he swindled krillin to bring piccolo back
n he stole a Dragon ball from vegeta n gassed him about the radar
Facts
Everyone did their part, had any of them not been there the arc likely would’ve ended completely differently
It's a shame he didn't do anything really after that, atleast he killed the present cell and got with 18.
I'm literally 21 and I _still_ genuinely terrified of him
everyone's objective on namek when frieza arrives: survive
Bullshit he sounded like a dweeb not one person I've ever met has ever called him scary and I was 9 or 10 when this came out originally
Frieza’s appearance, power and evilness makes him one of the best villain of all time. Just an incredible character. I felt the same way!
Me too, Man. I feel this. 🍃
“True humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less” once you embrace that you’ll realize it’s okay to be kind to and thoughtful of others, but also necessary to be mindful of how they may wish to take advantage of you.
so weird to slip in an "own the libs" comment on a video about a galactic landlord lol@@quintavious2482
I've rather recently had to come to this very decision myself. With my very own father. I realized he just wouldn't stop no matter whom tells him to, to change for the better. However, he continued being himself and I've since distanced myself further from him upon finally realizing this.
This is a great quote. I also like the quote "don't confuse kindness for weakness". Don't know where I heard it but it also hits home
The montage of international dubs sparks so much joy.
Despite our distances and differences, we're all together in our love for this story.
Nothing brings people together better than goku yelling and giving us all goosebumps.
Beautifully said. Different dub or not, Dragon ball unites us all worldwide. That clip of different dubs got me chills.
was wondering if Fench was included somewhere... But I think I recognize it at the beginning of the kamehameha

I love how this arc solidified the Goku modes for the remainder of the show. He's either out of commission, dead, in training, in transit or saving everyone.
That started with the red ribbon, king piccolo and sayain arcs too, it was nothing new.
@@justinarzola4584what? In Red Ribbon he was very active, interacted with secondary characters, went on adventures and fought multiple villains before the final fight. In King Piccolo he had an entire emotional revenge arc and a roadtrip with Yajirobe before the final fight.
@@wreday720 though he was active in those parts he was still removed from the action while other things happened.
@@justinarzola4584 nah i dont get what you mean at all, in red ribbon all the action was focused around him and in King Piccolo it was lesser but he had a seperate story while the others were doing their own thing, which would have been great if Z did that too.

You should see how he gets Ego in the manga.

@@keyblader007he's been losing since that ultra ego came out, so that form is walking L
It was amazing listening and hearing his VA appear
Same here on Brazil man, DBZ is so iconic in South America.
OMG that gave me chills and put me in tears of emotion. Yo desde que tengo memoria recuerdo a Goku, desde mis 4 años que lo vi llegar a la TV Argentina y el enorme impacto de verlo crecer y la euforia que causó cada diálogo brillante de la voz Mario Castañeda.
From Brazil, i got gosebumbs when i hear freezza voice em portuguese
Lol.
Amen
Cosmonaut Variety Hour has a shorter analysis of this arc where he makes the exact point- what krillin lakcs in raw power he makes up for in tactical thinking and planning.

DBZ Vegeta journey in this arc is good, Frieza is entertaining and Super Saiyan Goku was badass.

Man, my heart skipped a beat there.
If you remove the name changes and the "never say die" euphemism (most of the time, the words "death", "to die" and "to kill" are replaced with "loss", "to go on to a better life" and "to eliminate") that dub is pretty much spot on
1:18:41 I like how he casually drops one of the hardest dragon ball edits ever in the middle of his video
HE REALLY DID
The Frieza arc is just my favorite, pacing, action and the tension.

😂 that's hilarious! Sounds like something from TFS
"They just blew up that poor bald child!"
Same happenes for me, I couldn't understand how Goku and Krilin were besties if Krilin was clearly a child
Small detail but amazing when you think of it
same with his eyes
The use of the many dubs across the world is just phenomenal. Not only it illustrates just how much of a cultural impact this work is, as someone who is not primarily an english speaker it's always fun to recognize my language amidst the other ones.
Which is to say the overall quality of this series of reviews is quite literally pushing this channel's and everyone's talent to their absolut limits. I can't wait for the next video
Bro really forgot the portuguese dub (crying inside)
Il grande Paolo sempre nel cuore ❤
Impossibile rimpiazzarlo❤

Wait, he used the Goku voice to encourage his mom? Honestly beautiful
Sono uno storico, ma una storia come quella di Paolo Torrisi che dal letto dell'ospedale riassicura la madre con la voce di Goku non mi importa sapere se è vera o no, ci voglio solo credere perchè è bellissima
1:18:41 RIP Chris Aryes. You helped bring the menace of Manga Freeza out in Kai where it was missing in the original Funimation dub.

The Namek Saga is peak Shonen. One of the best story arcs in Anime and Manga.
This is easily the best dbz arc. The stakes were high, every character had value (no matter how small), Goku had the most epic fight, super saiyan was built up incredibly, and Frieza was at his absolute best.

The Frieza arc was the Zenith of Dragon Ball in terms of narrative and storytelling. It built upon, and flowed from, everything that came before it so organically that it felt like both the logical and natural continuation AND conclusion to what began in the Saiyan arc.
The segment about re-visiting your childhood using War in the Pocket as footage was beautiful.

After watching this video it felt wrong NOT to sub to your Patreon, so I did. Dragon Ball is easily my favorite thing in this world and I just had to thank you so much for giving it this kind of review series it deserves. Thank you so much.
The Anime took a scene that was only 2 pages long and made it into arguably the most ICONIC scene in all of Anime. It still continues to amaze me
Super Saiyan is iconic in the manga as well
@@thomasffrench3639sure. But most people when they think of the the transformation, absolutely is the anime version.
@@TheSkaOreo because a lot of westerners don’t read manga.
@@thomasffrench3639 more so it wasn't as available during the time
@@thomasffrench3639 no, because in the manga it's short and forgettable while in the anime it's memorable, long, and sticks with you. And trust me, you have no idea how many Americans read manga.
(I assume by westerners you mean americans, i guess if you live in asia Europe could also be westerners to you but even if europe is included that doesn't change the argument that much anyway)
The Best saga of all Z! The birth of Super Saiyan and the intro to Db's most iconic villain!
One of the best villains and one of the best transformation of all time hands down.
The best saga of Dragon Ball
I would say that saiyan saga is still the best objectively in Z but Frieza isn't far behind it and it's personally still my favorite.
Vegeta debuted last episode though….
Literally the best saga in DBZ. Best plot, best villain, best fights.

True, very true.

beautiful video mark, thank you for giving your respect to a series that has not only shaped and structured me from such an early age, but thousands upon millions of fans elsewhere.
If Mark commends Toriyama for creating excellent connections between arcs, hasn't Mark done a great job here himself?
makes you think about the talk no jutsu thing
@@goncaloferreira6429 Easily one of the weakest aspects of Naruto, despite that series's brilliance.
@@calvinwilson3617spiky haired bird
I mean, yeah. Coincidences do happen. Sometimes they’re beneficial
1:18:38 Thank you for this montage. This is nothing short of amazing. This went so hard and the fact you included several dubbed versions made it look complete and awesome to the point that you have managed to connect all of us fans under a single banner. :D
do you by any chance know the song used in the montage?
@@electroshock1021It’s off a dragon ball game ost called final bout, the name is the biggest fight the intro for the game.
Me paso lo mismo. Saludos desde Argentina!
Freeza was so scary when I was a child. He is and always will be the representation of pure evil, in my mind.
THE vilain of all time.
Without him we never have Meruem.
Frieza was so scary
Especially his first form, and especially in the Ocean Dub.
@@SGC90-t5ywas just gonna say that. Ocean dub frieza really sounded evil.
"Freeza" amateur...

This moment... Made me tear, made me going back to the moment when i was a kid, like the first time I watch this saga... Pure epicness...
And thank you to put all the others dubs of dragon ball, especially the moment where goku says he is the super Saiyajin in the latin american dub
Or when he says he's pissed off in the german dub
@@Laaks the german dub is so intense, I love it
You level of enthusiasm explaining this story so clearly is awesome.
1:18:15 Okay THAT was awesome with the mashup from many different dubs. Hearing Castañeda's line gave me shivers.
Great work.
Ugh. 1:19:24 hearing the Spanish dubs just brought back memories of watching this show with my uncle. Such an amazing review. Words cannot fathom how much this show means to me, but your reviews help capture the feeling we as fans have with this show.
1:19:30 That touch of putting all those dubs was a masterpiece, surely some of non-english speakers like me got back to the past with those voices
DBZ is simple and only about fighting but that doesn't necessarily make it bad
@@Ash_Wen-lisaying dbz is only about fighting is kinda crazy ngl
That would be silly and I disagree with anyone that has that take
I can contrast it to One Piece as an example because everyone knows about it.
"Yo soy el super saiyajin Goku"
Thanks a lot for including that part with the Latin American dub, a tear rolled down my eye as I had a flashback to 1999 as a kid who didn´t have to deal with anxiety or depression
rewatched the entire series recently, and was blown away by the cat and mouse episodes with vegeta, krillin, and gohan. It's a+ story telling.
This series of analysis is just too good. Peak video essay in every single way. I can't congratulate you enough, Mark.
The Freeza Saga was my favourite in DBZ.
Because of it's epic moments, fights, stakes and first of all good driven story.
The moment when Goku stands in super-sayan mode was perfect.
Freeza at that moment was a really big a threat to the main characters
At that moment anime made me feel more empathy for the characters in the moment of failure...
An that why i love this part of DB franchise so much!
I love it, but cell saga definitely takes it for me.
Waiting patiently Mark! Make it as great as you can and take the time you and your team need!
Man...this was so awesome. Reminds me why I've loved this series, ever since I was a kid. All the way from 5 to 26 yrs old.
I don't think appalled is the word you were looking for
I think the Elder Namek having the power-up ability, while certainly giving somewhat unearned power, does serve to elevate both him and the Namekian people.
Im glad someone brought this up
This was ungodly hype
Seriously, I dislike AMVs or any edits of sorts, idky ... but this sequence? It could be much longer and a full fledged AMV and I would pump that sh*t into my veins

It's part of Ride The Lightning Album
🐷Esse vídeo simplesmente me fez chorar!

great review !!
Looking at this , I kinda miss the scary atmosphere and first form frieza
Vegetta really was MVP for me after this arc.
He's really grown up like a character from villian to antihero...
Toriyama's best written character by far.
He totally trash the next arc sadly

The sense of desperation during the final battles I will never forget. Nor will I ever forget that first ever SSJ transformation.
No matter how you watch it, this story is an absolute thrill ride and I can’t wait to hear your passionate thoughts on at Mark.👍
Edit: WOW!
Your story telling and the nostalgia I have for this story has me legit crying. Thanks bro
