My experience navigating Dragon Ball GT was a nightmare experience. I made this journey across the hellscape that was Dragon Ball GT's Black Star Dragon Balls a couple of years ago and figured it was time to create a single video with the entire experience crammed into one video for ease of viewing.

That ending hit hard cause back then, that was the end. There was no 'The End' at the end of Dragonball and Dragonball Z, when you saw it at the end of GT, especially with it being 100 years later and Pan being the only character left, it just felt so final.

Felt depressing as hell honestly because they ruined so many characters and wasted so much potential of the new generation with Uub and Pan in particular. While there were some good elements, like SSJ4 essentially bringing things full circle with a Saiyan's most unique aspects (their tails and Oozaru transformation) that got lost and largely forgotten about upon the end of the Saiyan Saga, most of it was just awful and painful to watch. Even back then most of the villains just felt stupid and confusing. Didn't help Funimation's English dub had the god awful rap song intro and the score for the dub was so awfully edgy for no reason, creating a horribly confusing and much darker atmosphere than the original anime portrayed.
It was like where Faulconer's score in DBZ added scifi/mystery/alien elements and made certain scenes feel more intense or dramatic, GT's was just constant intensity and low guitar chords that made it almost metal for some reason.
In general GT just felt so awfully disconnected and horribly written, to where it took a fat dump on anyone not named Goku. The ending in the dub didn't feel sweet or like a pleasant send off to me, it just felt disappointing and confusing as to why there was a Goku and Vegeta Jr, with Pan's potential completely wasted.

    • @Elzzaw
      @Elzzaw Год назад +62

For me the only reason it hit at all was because it showed the journey Goku had gone through. The ending made absolutely no sense what-so-ever. I always wondered why Goku went with the dragon. He wasn't the one that initially went looking for the dragon balls, hell he himself hardly ever used the dragon balls, it was mostly his friends. The whole thing just made no sense. Goku has absolutely no connection to any of the dragons other than the 4 star ball being a keepsake from Gohan.
It was just so contrived and stupid in an attempt to get a reaction from an ultimately boring series.

@@Z3RO5286 I disagree personally. GT Had more soul in it than an inkling of Super until Super got to the tournament arc, 100 episodes in. Not saying GT is a masterpiece, just saying Super is just that lackluster. Even when they try to make an impactful moment, it falls flat because it feels so... childish if that makes sense. Super feels like its audience was dumbed down and made for children. Which, in many ways, is not wrong, because the channel it aired on was restricted from even showing blood and had to follow many rules that child cartoons have to follow.
GT had much more cool things come out of it. Super only had Ultra Instinct, Beerus and Whis really until the tournament arc which revealed new characters and universes, which again, was over 100 episodes in. I can't conceivably say those 30 episodes makes up for the lackluster choices made before, and terrible animation issues.
GT had characters not really established on very strongly, even a fan favorite with Trunks. They utilized Trunks fairly decently, it was typically Pan who got the short end of the stick. Baby Vegeta to me was a memorable villain. The guy who took over a whole planet as well and was the planet itself, that was a cool villain with a cool concept. And of course, the most widely accepted as best part of GT with Omega Shenron. I mean, how could you not love that concept that over-usage of the dragon balls has created negative energy? This, to me, is the best thing that's came out of GT and I wish that this would be followed upon more. It makes them double think about using the Dragon Balls for wishes, and maybe be more cautious about it in the future.
Yeah, we can always think of ways to make things better. I can say the same for Z. But I don't think GT was atrocious, nor do I think it was worse than Super. I do think of DB, DBZ, and DBGT, that GT is the weakest link, but if Super is included then Super is the weakest link to me.

To clear up the existence of the Black Star Dragon Balls:
It’s explained in the Japanese sub that they were created by Katas’ son (the Nameless Namekian) before he split into Kami and King Piccolo. When Kami purged the evil from his heart and became two beings, the BSDBs turned to stone and were stored away. When Piccolo fused with Kami in the Cell Saga, they came back.
Seriously, the dub makes GT seem so different that I’m convinced it’s the only reason it’s as hated as it is.
(Edit: there would’ve been a way for both Katas’ son and Kami to get off Earth and find the BSDBs, because Katas’ son had a Namekian spaceship on the Lookout.)

No, it would definitely still be hated regardless, that sort of thing doesn't really touch what most people's main complaints are with the show.

There are two reasons why the Four Star Dragon is good. The first is what you said: because of the ball's connection to Goku.
But the second is the actual in-universe explanation: the Four Star Dragon was the only one that was created from a selfish wish, so it generated the reverse, good karma, just like the selfless wishes generated negative karma.

Remember Goku is what brought all these people there together. They ALL had direct ties and interaction to GOKU directly. Everyone else was really just there by association.
I can imagine Tien stops coming by at some point, probably to open a Dojo like in Super, Piccolo stayed dead at the end of GT so the Dark Star Dragon Balls wouldn't come back and pose a threat as well, Chiaotzu I can see following Tien like he normally does until he's of age to rule his people (I think I remember him being a Prince in official canon though I can't remember specifically.) Vegeta probably lost his will to train or even stay on earth. Ect. Yeah it's sad but it shows how life happens and even close friends can drift apart with time.

Hey Mark! I love your analysis videos! They're both interesting and hilarious. 😂
For us Dragon Ball fans here in Italy, the ending of GT is a double tearjerker.
Maurizio Torresan, voice of Goku along with director of the dub and writer of the localization for all series, films and specials up to GT, died only a few days after wrapping up the work on GT. By the time the final episode aired, he was already gone.
He was famously the only one who though the franchise could be a success, and in the industry they used to make fun of him for it.
His dedication to this series paid out tremendously, as to this day Italians, both old and young, still love Dragon Ball.
I know GT has its writing all over the place, but I can never watch the final episode without crying, not just because it's the end of a long journey, but also because this series was the last time we could hear Torresan as Goku. He was dying during those recording sessions (he was ill for a long time by then, but never told anyone), and still gave it all for the fans.
There's nothing but massive respect for him from fans and colleagues for his dedication to his work, especially after the behind the scenes situation became public knowledge. He was Dragon Ball's first and biggest fan in Italy.

@@RafaelSolMakerAbsolutely. I remember that because of DB's massive popularity his death made the newspapers's front page.
Another thing that I believe contributed to his massive near-reverence from fans is the aura of mystery around his person. For example, no photos of him are known to exist; that's because, despite being very polite and open, he enjoyed his privacy, to the extent that he never made public appearances, released interviews, or even let himself being photographed or filmed. Even his own name was a bit of a mystery for fans, since he was almost always credited under the alias "Paolo Torrisi" and never under his real name. His own colleagues didn't know where he lived or where was the office where he worked. All they have left are their memories of working with him (famously, Gianluca Iacono, Vegeta's VA, said they recorded their lines for the Saiyan Saga together side by side, amazing), and the fans have some films he made as a young actor in the 60s-70s and his voice through the many roles he played in dozens of series across the decades.

The biggest problem with GT, IMO, is while some of the plot beats were interesting, the were very fanfic-y. Here's a second set of Dragon Balls. Here's a weapon created by Tuffles to take revenge on the Saiyans. Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu create another Number 17, who then fuses with the original Number 17 to create a Super Number 17. The only plot properly foreshadowed was the corrupted Dragon Balls, because Old Kaioushin mentioned something like that back in DBZ. However, the execution is pretty lackluster.

And it comes across that way, like the writers wanted to return to what it was like during the original Dragon Ball, but unfortunately you can't undo 20 years of writing.
If they want to tell that story in the world of Dragon Ball again, they can't do it by pretending they didn't raise the power ceiling to the Moon.
For goodness sake, they literally use the Dragon Balls to make Goku a child again, despite him still being in his 60s and having all the experience and knowledge of adulthood. They wanted to write a childhood experience, but refused to let go of Goku.
And at the end of the day that's why the show failed, they wanted to pretend Goku wasn't basically a God fighting other gods, and instead gave us a very underdeveloped story that falls apart when you think about it too much

Personally I liked the idea of the shadow dragons but think it was just poorly done. Each dragon's personality and powers are basically associated with the wish that brought them into being. The female one having transformation powers matches perfectly with the fact that the person who made the wish was Oolong, a shapeshifter, and the 4 star dragon's wish was the one that gave Demon King Piccolo back his youth, an entirely selfish wish and thus making Nuova the least evil of them all. Meanwhile, arguably one of the biggest wishes, the revival of everyone Frieza and his men killed on Namek, is what created Syn (they were all called Shenron but had their own names too), making him the strongest, and being associated with Frieza, also the most evil.

I actually loved the Shadow Dragon arc as a kid. I see its flaws now as an adult, but I still really enjoyed Nuova and Eis Shenron, and was disappointed you didn't have anything to say about Nuova. While its never explicitly stated, I really liked the idea that as the overuse of the Dragon Balls built up a lot of negative energy that eventually manifested and started causing trouble for the heroes, the Four Star Ball spent so much time in close proximity to Granpa Gohan, Goku and Gohan that some of their positive energy rubbed off on him, and the result was a Shadow Dragon that still wanted to fight Goku but wasn't evil like the rest. One other side note, I actually thought SSJ4 Gogeta was great. While this technically precedes Super and so is the first instance of a higher echelon of Super Saiyan causing the fusion to burn out faster, it still makes sense conceptually. As for SSJ4 Gogeta toying with Omega for 8-9 minutes. That was to provoke him to launch his negative karma ball, so he could convert the energy into positive. You can criticize the randomness of SSJ4 Gogeta being able to do that, but notice once he does, he immediately precedes to eliminate Shenron with a Big-Bang Kamehameha. There were still elements of the final fight that bugged me, like Omega's regeneration after Goku's Dragon Fist, since we never saw Rage do that, but the SSJ4 Gogeta stuff was great IMO and the Spirit Bomb was a good way to conclude the fight.

Simply bad for many inconsistencies that I will mention:
Trunks claims that android 17 has the same KI as android 18, but in Dragon Ball Z it was stated that androids do not have KI.19 and that they have unlimited energy.
During the Cell saga, it was emphasized on several occasions that the fusion of Piccolo and Kamisama would put an end to the existence of what he had created, which was demonstrated when, upon reunification, it was necessary to take Dende to Earth to be his successor and Create new spheres. This was ignored by the creators of this series since although Kamisama had ceased to exist many years ago, the final spheres were still intact.
Pilaf and his gang show a lot more aging
pronounced than what corresponds to his age according to the official chronology.
Vegeta recognizes the ki of the tsufurujins even though he was born long after that race's extermination and only learned to sense the ki of others as an adult.
Bra, the daughter of Vegeta and Bulma, is born a year after Goku's granddaughter Pan according to the original saga and the official chronology, however in this series she is shown as a teenager several years older than Pan and even older than Marron, Krillin's daughter, who is older than both of them.
Originally after making a wish, the Dragon Balls were petrified for a year, so it was necessary to wait this time for the radar to detect them and be able to search for them. In this series the spheres remained in force despite having been used.
Goku, Vegeta and Majin Buu's combination of power was so intense that Rō Kaiō Shin authorized them to fight on his planet since other worlds will not resist such power; However, the fight against the One Star Dragon involved showed much greater powers, but these did not damage more than the surface of the Earth.
According to Toriyama himself, Pan would not be able to reach the Super Saiyan transformation since, being Goku's granddaughter, her blood was too diluted; However, in the epilogue of this saga, descendants of Goku and Vegeta appear, who despite being more than six generations apart from the originals, can transform even more easily than pure Saiyans.

In this series Krillin shows much more advanced aging than Yamcha, Tenshinhan or Bulma despite being younger than them.

Basically because the set up is always the same you create novelty through what you can change. Most of the time in Jojo the titular character isn't even involved in the episode's plot unless it's a really tough enemy. I do find the exploration of the dragon ball universe in the form of a space fantasy/space adventure story interesting, specially considering that there's not many anime that fit in that niche, it's a pitty the series doesn't use the strenghts of that kind of story

The most fitting ending for the story of dragon ball was the ending of GT. Goku (sun wukong) transcending with shenron is goku’s enlightenment. He has let go of everything and has become a being of pure light and love. People say that Goku is a flat character, unchanging throughout the whole series, but I don’t think so. Who he is at his core doesn’t change much, this is true. But he makes mistakes and he learns from them. He no longer allows anger to take control of him. His motivations changed from wanting to be the strongest fighter and fight for fightings sake to just loving and protecting the people he cares about. Goku achieves nirvana and it is so beautiful

It was probably the scene where Goku was using IT, but because of his size and shit his effectiveness with the technique wasn’t great. So they teleported just a bit away and fell
For Goku you could argue that he needed to get used to his body, but the others? Hell no there’s no excuse

I'd disagree with the Dragon's not having motivations for being Evil. At least the English Dub explains that each wish had caused a build-up of negative energy that Needed time to filter out. Because normally it would take years to find all 7 they had time to filter out that energy, but Bulma made it basically a yearly occurrence with her Dragon Radar. It also plays into Nuova Shrenron's fairer nature since Nuova was born from King Piccolo's wish of youth, the most selfish wish made from the Dragon Balls. It ended up creating the least amount of negative energy where as Eis depending on the media used is either Bulma's wish to revive everyone King Piccolo killed, or erasing Majin Buu from everyone's Memories.
In Order of number of Stars:
Syn/Omega was the wish to restore the lives of everyone killed by Frieza and his men.
Haze was only 1 life being Bora's from the OG run
    Eis I explained earlier
    Nuova is the same
Rage was the wish made to revive Goku after his battle with Radditz which while may make him like Haze, it's the intent behind the wishes that corresponds to the negative energy and by wishing Back Goku, he saved thousands of lives from Vegeta and Nappa.
Oceanus was made from Oolong's wish which again, while selfish in satiating Oolong's perverse nature, was made with good intentions to stop Pilaf from wishing for World Domination
Natureon was made from the wish to restore everyone who was killed by Majon Vegeta as you stated, which considering that was a very dark time in terms of storytelling for Dragon Ball as an IP, makes sense as to his personality.
Each Shadow Dragon's design/powers also plays into each wish that spawned them in some way

I thought pans gambit was really cool, if they didnt drill the rude little girl trope she would have so many more fans. It was something fresh to see a female sayain get emotional and they really could've played on it, especially being gohans daughter. I actually liked shenrons escape from the supernova, as wacky as it was. Vegeta was a breath of fresh air in GT, responsible and understood his limitations, a long contrast from what he once was. The ending was pretty perfect. Ssj4 maybe the best looking form of all, also not scaling too hard neither. Everything felt relevant that it wasnt such an enormous step like ui or ego forms. Just right to get ahead and develop.

21:23 sparing pan is the earliest clue of everything being a ruse. It's like Dr Gero said a machine that it's not willing to fight if useless. So Giru sparing pan tells us that there is something going on. Especially since trunks was pretty easily turned into a slab of Metal By the time space redirect.

Granted, I think the Earthquake catfish has a mythological basis. So it's not just something randomly thought up. It's like the origin for Dragon Ball being Journey to the West. Take note of Whiscash in Pokemon, similar to how Infernape is based on Sun Wukong just like Goku

I don't understand how the dragonballs somehow held a secret power within them that could create the dragon in the last arc, who were strong enough to contend with super saiyan 4 of all things.
Also the black star balls just being pulled out of nowhere was really dumb.
