To me the Freeza saga is peak Dragon Ball, it had a ton of build up, peak action, character development and the transformation that revolutionized shonen. The android saga was great but it was the beginning of the super sayans show, where if you wasnt a super sayan you would barely get any screen time.

I really liked Yajirobi in his introduction.
He was the first one I thought to "mirror" Goku of some kind to the audience. In his first scene Goku watches him killing and eating like he himself would do when hungry.
Yajirobi was for me like Goku, an overly strong kid that just wasn't interested in tournaments and climbing ancient towers.

The Cell Saga will always be the GOAT for me. @@geovanilopez5459 what made the Saiyan Saga really shine is it still held onto some of the original DB charm while also introducing crazy alien threats. Later in the series every just came down to bigger ki blasts, spirit bombs ( I'm not counting the first use of it here against it as it was obviously new and shiny) and power ups. Original Dragon Ball had all kinds of shenanigans that often determined the outcome of fights. Goku holding Radditz and Yajirobe cutting off Vegetas tail are throwbacks to that. Hell even turning Ginyu into a frog in the next saga was a throwback, but those became fewer and further in between as power creep settled in. Similarly to Naruto and One Piece, though One Piece hasn't suffered as much just due to the outlandish nature of the series and its powers.

Sad thing about GT is that the idea for some story arcs are actually fantastic - like Baby being the personification of Saiyans violent past coming back to bite them.
And of course the concept of Shadow Dragons where the heroes overusing and constant reliance on the Dragon Balls comes back to bite them.
These are some great ideas but the bad execution is what ruins them. Such a wasted potential.

Frieza will always be the best saga in DBZ for me. When I was younger, I vaguely remember watching parts of it on Toonami. Years later, I would watch clips of it online constantly, enough that it became the saga I understood the most. The buildup is fantastic, especially how Vegeta’s character arc was handled. Not to mention Frieza is my favorite villain as well. Cell drug on for too long (although Future Trunk’s arc was also written very well) and Buu was just… too much. One thing I noticed about GT’a arcs is the theme of the past coming back to haunt the present. The black star Dragon Balls are something the Nameless Namekian made in the distant past with evil in his heart.
Baby is the consequence of the Saiyans’ ruthless past coming back to seek revenge.
Super 17 is the result of Gero and Myuu stewing in defeat to the point it consumes them to the point of revenge.
And of course, the Shadow Dragons is the result of overusing the Dragon Balls all this time

    • @KonoGufo

It's honestly a much better thematic direction than what Super did, OG Dragon Ball and Z were about a journey through childhood and adulthood respectively, so it makes sense to go forward by addressing the consequences of ones actions as a young adult after they've moved forward in life to their later years. Or in this case, Goku facing the consequences of taking responsibility for the legacy of the Saiyans and for the Z gang's use of the Dragon Balls back in the day.
Now I don't know if making Goku a kid again was the right choice along the way, but oh well lol. GT had great ideas and very questionable execution. Meanwhile Super kind of just...it's good sometimes, but it feels like an officially written fanfiction. It's sort of just trying to stretch out what Z did and re-treading ground in as many different ways as it can instead of trying to go elsewhere with its ideas.

You are correct in that it did more than Super did, and it felt like it went in a more logical direction instead of trying to stretch the ideas of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z out and rehashing either characters or arcs. The past came back in GT, as did many of the characters, but it was done with a purpose relevant to the story they were trying to tell.

That horror scene of that mother and her kid running away from cell at the airport and then Krillin saving them!!! ++ 16, 17 and 18 banter while travelling to Goku's house, the amount of fun 17 was having. The Cell arc trivialized Super Saiyan as a transformatiuon, trivialized every non-Saiyan fighter in the roster even more than they already were, trivialized the Dragon Balls themselves so that they have no purpose besides resurrecting people, and it all revolved around a lackluster villain. It also introduced the most bullshit mechanic for a villain: regeneration- which made it so that unless you could one-shot the villain, the fight never ends and the heroes are just getting hurt and losing energy.
That arc was the beginning of the downhill for DBZ, and the sooner we collectively accept it, the better.

@@JurgenBlitz Maybe when we collectively accept that everyone has their own opinion, the better. I understood your points until that last sentence. Personally, Cell is and has always been my favorite villain, but you don't see me coming after you for calling him lackluster. I would argue that regeneration only became annoying with Buu, Cell was the first time they used that foil, so I don't think it's fair to come after that arc for something it introduced. I feel like the thing about the Dragon Balls isn't that they were trivialized, but no one has any purpose for them compared to Frieza or King Piccolo, who both wanted immortality. None of the characters following those villains needed the Dragon Balls to accomplish their goals, leading to the relegation of the Dragon Balls into a mechanism to restore life. I can understand your point about Super Saiyan, but I feel like the main violator is Trunks (and maybe Vegeta if you want to stretch it that far), seeing as how Trunks is so removed from the main timeline and while his transformation did come about due to anger, like with all the others, and his appearance was cool with the revelation that "There can be more?!", Trunks was never built up in the story to even have the development to reach that state like Gohan or even Vegeta, so that's my take on everything. I sincerely ask you to consider opposing viewpoints before claiming that your opinion is an objective fact in the future.

For the king piccolo arc, I think one of the contrivances can be retroactively explained away: Having only watched DB LONG after DBZ, I always understood the magic water as a placebo, with the true reason for Gokus powerboost being that he got a zenkai.

@@pascalsimioli6777 Thats why I said "retroactively". I know it wasn't thought of at the time, but a lot of great manga got stuff explained retroactively because, at the time, the mangaka didn't know where the story was going yet. Always really enjoyed the Kid Buu fight and even though there's a lot of dumb stuff in the arc and some silly fourth wall breaks, I just like it a bunch. However, when binge reading Cell and then Buu it feels pretty weird. Do super enjoy the Mr Satan and Buu relationship, though!

But when it comes to Super, there is no minor hindsight. When watching Super there were just way too many times at which I would know instantly FAR better routes the story could’ve taken (literally have a list cause I do wanna make a video about it one day).
It truly shows the massive gap in quality and care Toriyama used to put in the story vs what Toei put in their original esque version of the anime. Toyotarou has problems but at least you can tell he cared and many times tried his best with the manga. There is absolutely no way I can say the same when it comes to the Anime version and it’s writers.

My favorite installation of the whole Dragon Ball Franchise is Definitely Classic Dragon Ball. No, not because of nostalgia or any of that, but I genuinely liked it. I loved the adventure aspect that seems to be missing nowadays. I have got to agree that the Budokai Tenkaiichis were AMAZING. I was blown away at how invested I was in the battles and how it actually meant something. I do like Z, GT and Super, but the fights are way too prolonged and have little meaning to me other than looking nice and boom boom Vegeta and Goku new powerup. Comedy is also great, and is plentiful inside Classic. Characters like General Blue, Mercenary Tao etc. were whacky but also very strong at the time. All of these minor characters like Upa and his dad were also very fun to watch (Was super happy they had a cameo in GT and Z). When I first initially watched it, I was a bit turned off due to how many episodes it was (200) and how most people disregard it but it ended up being something I was looking forward to watching each day. I still love the newer installations, Gohan and Trunks are some of my favorite characters.
Was super cool to see Goku grow up through those years, I love stories which actually tell a story where a character grows and learns from the start till the end. DB-DBS will always have a place in my heart.

Each arc in Z is thematically interesting, Saiyan arc was about nature vs nurture obviously Goku and Vegeta represent the themes but they both reject each other's own upbringing, Vegeta rejects Goku because he's a low class warrior by nature and won't accept him due to his nurture by earth, Goku rejects his nature because of who his people were but respects and appreciates his nurture because of how far he came,
The Frieza arc was about taking the good and the bad aka accepting both aspects, notice how Vegeta was abusing his nature to get Zenkai but never truly respecting the nurture of Goku or the others because he was to obsessed with his own biology, Piccolo also abused his own nature and fused with nail to get a power up but he had truly appreciated it until the next arc,
Goku was the only one who accepted his nature and nurture and was able to seriously either surprise, surpass and beat Frieza, " I'm a Saiyan raised on Earth" is a powerful line,
The Cell arc was about the previous generation vs the new, Cell was an amalgamation of different previous strong warriors who came from the future to fight the past warriors, he's a walking contradiction he's a future warrior that has the genetics of beings from the past, that's why every person Cell fought prior to Gohan was set up to loose, Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo Android 16 etc were beings from the distant past that's why Gohan the product of a Saiyan and earthling who isn't from the future had to save earth from this present threat, while trunks rid of the Androids In his present timeline because they were his threat,
And with the Buu arc it came full circle Buu I like to think was a play on the phrase you are what you eat, he lost himself his original self the more fighters he faced which made him more bland but so are the heroes they have lost themselves to the point where in some retired, others have given up on fighting, and the ones who are still in the game are only obsessed with the next big battle and forgetting who they are, noticed how the Spirit bomb didn't work on Vegeta or Frieza but thematically it worked on Buu, because when they fought frieza and Vegeta the heroes didn't loose sight of who they were but with Buu it took the combination of everyone to bring them to accepting who they are but not forgetting where they came from always looking for the next challenge but keeping themselves grounded I love dragon ball ,❤️

Too add more to the Saiyajin/Cyan arc It had a pampered Gohan as a kid feeling abandoned and then turning that abandonment into Survival. The way Survival theme works in the arc was fascinating especially when it was working through the most privileged ones in Gohan and Vegita since they never had work so hard to do anything before in their lives.
Now on to the 3rd section of the Artificial human arc with Cell It went from Cell wanted absorb the Artificial Humans to proving he's a perfect version of everyone else,Cell by saying he's going to destroy the earth believes he's enabling humanity while giving them time to prepare to protect their property(earth)...
By doing this he wanted to get the best out of everyone that is cell prize and he's gambling with the prize(Gohan) just to get surprised,Cell living his life on the edge is a phase that came off as a Triple entendre which is addiction.... curiosity that killed the cat....Not believing he had any limits against the protagonist that is about wanting to break his limits and a another character who is scare of breaking that limit ...
But i will say the Artificial human arc was the characters playing lottery speaking figuratively. Cell not just gamble with gohan with living his life on the edge but he got worst out of everyone to get what needed or suffer the consequences... Goku gambled living though his son developing this "sport father trait" ...Trunks had to gamble with traveling,And Vegita was definitely a slave off the leash to his ego after being one to freeza when he allowed cell to fill his ego up.
I can go on how Gohan vs Cell symbolizes humanity swallowing itself .....Along with the abuse becoming the abuser....The events of this fight made vegita go through existential crisis at the end of the arc.
Somebody said the Artificial Human arc was about empathy which i never throught of that but i do see that,But i always said selfish and arrogance theme colided with the plot of the arc. Then it gets deeper with control...Having it and losing it...characters believing or think they have control of the situation but in reality they don't have control at all of the situation or oneself...It was a lot of giving up in the arc from every Character...

Also Toriyama told the story of"This what happens when you used a weapon with so much force or misused without care it will get wash up or damaged"through Gohan.
Mentally he was damaged at the time when he ascended then those events against cell didn't make him want to get stronger to become his dad successor he became damage goods before he gave it another try at it.

It’s more often than not people I’ve talked to about Dragon Ball write-off all the early stuff as nothing more than a stepping stone to Dragon Ball-Z. The world martial arts tournaments are great, though! and one fight doesn’t take half a season of anime to get through 🙂

I always love your Dragon Ball content, especially your character analysis’! I was wondering if you would ever make any surrounding the human Z-Fighter characters i.e. Krillin, Roshi, Yamcha, ect... Heck even Mr. Satan would be cool. Maybe even just one on the humans as a whole.
The humans are so under rated/under estemated, and it’s cool that they don’t have a transformation/ easy way to power. (Outside of Krillins boost from Guru.)
They used to have purpose and meaning, and now they are just used as jokes, and can’t even hold a candle due to power scaling even when they put in the hard training time.
(Also side note, the only way I could see them become relevant again is if someone wished for humans to have the same unlimited potential as Saiyans, or if they introduce Universe 6 humans who just got their Earth revived.)

I will always say the Saiyan Saga is the best thing Toriyama ever wrote. Just looking at the art and paneling you can tell he was so inspired and in a creative euphoria while he was making it. It’s not just Goku vs Vegeta that’s incredible about this arc, it’s the fact that the Raditz situation was so bad that Goku had to team up with his nemesis and even still they barely got him. It’s how Nappa spent almost half the arc completely decimating all the characters you got to know and love throughout the past arcs. The Nappa fight feels like it takes forever in the best way possible, by the end of it everyone is either exhausted or dead save for Goku who shows up to give us one of the best fights ever done. Yep. After that Dragon Ball never truly became great again and despite much effort to revitalize it in Super it didn't feel right due to how it keeps on repeating the same mistakes as before like more new transformations that devalues the prior forms all for the sake of MARKETING!!, focusing entirely on power levels that determine who wins or loses that devalue any potential and strategic usage Ki might have that doesn't revolve around transformations and finally the fact that all of this resulted in virtually everyone aside from Goku and Vegeta being completely underutilized and treated as afterthoughts by Toriyama is without a doubt one of the biggest frustrations of Dragon Ball Super and a painful indictment that Toriyama's skills as a writer has deteriorated quite a lot.

It was awful from start to finish, I had so many issues with it from Android 17s characterisation, power scaling and so many things not making sense. For example the random creation of Hell Fighter 17 with no lab, how he was somehow able to control/manipulate Android 17 and how Super 17 was able to causally beat all the Z fighters yet a kid Super Saiyan Goku out performed all of them against Super 17

Why not power him up instead?
Re: power scaling yes the power scaling in the Super 17 was horrible, as I already explained Super 17 made quick work of Super Saiyan Vegeta, Trunks, Goten, Gohan, Majuub and Pan then here comes a Super Saiyan kid Goku who out performs them all by a considerable difference which made 0 sense to me. I won't even get started on how Goku in this arc was acting like the DBS anime Goku by allowing Super 17 to get stronger than him not learning his lesson from his battle with Android 19.
I don't see what Super has to with this, the power scaling in this arc was just one of many aspects that made the entire arc *a comfortable F tier.* But fine lets address Super, Trunks vs Zamasu was piss poor power scaling, no defending that but the arc itself was still better than the Super 17 arc easily. Zamasu is the better villain in every capacity, the manga version of the Goku Black arc didn't have any power scaling issues and other characters who weren't Goku actually contributed to the story. In the Super 17 arc Goku did all the heavy lifting making everyone else his back up dancers

@@FibaFanatic Android 17 vs Blue Goku in the DBS anime again *is not defendable but still not relevant to my comment* as well but does has an explantion even though its bs. According to Toriyama before Super was a thing he had said Andorid 17 had been training since the end of the Cell arc. In the manga version Android 17 is comparable or slightly stronger than ToP Goku SSJ3 which to me is more realistic than what the anime did.
Roshi against Jiren wasn't even a battle for me to call that "poor powerscaling", Jiren wasn't even remotely trying against Roshi for that to be considered poor powerscaling to me. Remember killing was not allowed in the ToP, which is why Jiren causally sent Roshi packing. But fine lets say I agree that its poor power scaling, the Super 17 arc was worse in comparison. There has also been worse instances of poor powerscaling in Z than Roshi vs Jiren but Kid Super Saiyan Goku out performing everyone else against Super 17 says it all, like I mentioned before powerscaling *is just one of many issues I had with that arc.* So *bringing up Super doesn't change the reality of how poor this arc was.*

@@j.i.k2.044 Exactly. We weren't shown how Hell Fighter 17 was created so it's left up to the viewer's imagination to fill the gaps. The same way we aren't shown Frieza training in 3 months to become SSB tier, Android 17 training to become SSB tier or Roshi training to defeat Tien who should have a power level in the millions.
Maybe cyborgs (humans with mechanical parts) keep their body in the other world along with all of their mechanical parts? Then Gero simply harvested those parts to create a new android?
Actually, that's proven since we saw Gero and Android 19 in hell.

For me Freeza saga was okay but it's nothing compare to Cell Saga... Freeza saga is just common "Hey we have big enemy here, we need beat him... okey only one guy with plot armour can beat him". Plot of Cell Saga was very complex, I loved this when I was kid and I love this now when I'm adult.

I adore the Cell Saga. I think it feature possibly the best introduction to any villain in anime. I think it's emotional, gut wrenching, terrifying, and every kid's wet dream. It's genuinely the stuff of childhood, but also gets so dark that when you watch it as an adult, you genuinely question how the fuck you were allowed to watch this stuff. But it also plays with themes of passing the torch and New vs Old, which were executed really well. It develops the major characters very nicely, the plot is tightly written, and the story is well paced, and it's just so much fun. I will never forget that final showdown between Gohan and Cell for the fate of the Earth.
That being said, the Frieza/Namek saga is undoubtedly the peak of Dragon Ball imo. I don't think it's ever gotten better since and it never came close before. The Frieza Saga intercuts between three different timelines: Goku's journey to Namek as he slowly comes to terms with his Saiyan heritage and learns to start accepting his nature, Namek with Krillin, Gohan, Bulma, and others as they try to survive and find the Dragon Balls to save their friends, and the villain Frieza as he tries to find the same Dragon Balls to gain immortality. It's cut so well that, regardless of how long the saga is, and trust me it's fucking long, it's still perfectly engaging and episodes fly by. Frieza is a fucking amazing villain. He's by far the most hateable villain in Dragon Ball due to just how ruthless, pathetic, cunning, and sadistic he is. He's single-minded, ego centric, and so ridiculously powerful and evil that, even with his simplicity, he ends up being a hugely memorable and iconic villain, one that has stayed in the minds of future generations. The themes of nature vs nurture are continued from the Saiyan Saga, and developed in new and interesting ways, arguably even more nuanced than in the Saiyan Saga as Goku must now manage to find a good balance between his nurture and his nature.
It's tightly written, extremely well paced, characterizes everyone incredibly well, and has one of the most iconic moments in animated history. So yeah, it's gotta be #1

Original Dragon Ball really is wonderful. As I always say, OG Dragon Ball is SUPER underrated. Absolutely adore the comedy and adventure aspects of it all, as well as the overall lightheartedness of it all.😊
I do love the Frieza saga, though. EASILY the number one for me. DBZ really is incredible. It’s just so much fun to read!😄

I liked, and still like, Garlic Jr. arc because it had Krillin, Gohan and Piccolo save the day without Goku or Vegeta. And I like the mist thing, for... Other reasons.
But yeah, it's not as good as the rest of the arcs up to that point. I'd put it in the same tier as the first arc.
