    Jaya is unironically my favorite arc. It is one of the few arcs that is actually about Luffy. Usually Luffy is doing things for the sake of his friends or for stopping injustices. 22:08 The One Piece Wiki may count the Post-Enies Lobby Arc as a separate story arc, and that might be based on some kind of fan consensus, but if you look at it in terms of story structure, it is obviously just the epilogue of the 120-chapter long Water 7/Enies Lobby Arc, just like Mark says. The shorter arcs leading up to Alabasta had very obvious beginnings and endings, but the transition from Water 7 to Enies Lobby (The Sea Train) is best viewed as a second act action sequence which keeps its steam (pun partially intened) well into the start of Enies Lobby, culminating in the climax of Act Two, the burning of the flag. I doubt Oda would consider these separate story arcs.
    As a sidenote, the only other gripe I have with the Fanon Story Arc division is that I think the Post-War/Grey Terminal Arc is clearly just the long epilogue of Marineford rather than an arc in it's own right. Otherwise I'd say it fairly accurately catches where one story ends and the next begins.

      @fleskhjertafan93 Год назад +5

      It's all fan made Oda doesn't separate the story by island arcs he separates them by sagas. On this topic I don't see why people separate water seven and enies lobby, they are literally 2 halves of the same story. @@MugenHeadNinja I can see the argument for Jaya/Skypiea as well, but personally I consider them separate, because the Strawhats leave behind the sidecast of Jaya as they blast off into Skypiea. Likewise, Enel has no impact on Jaya despite being the main villain of Skypiea. (contrast Water 7/Enies Lobby, where you have the same villains and sidecast for the whole 120 chapters).
      I guess the only real criteria is whether or not the arc feels like a self-contained story with a beginning and an ending. For me, the answer is yes for Skypiea but no for Enies Lobby. And by that logic, I guess would lump Impel Down together with Marineford/Post-War as well, despite the different setting.

    @ChaosHuntsman Год назад +68

    I will make one argument for Drum Kingdom being befitting of the A tier or higher despite the rough orientation in the manga.
    This is the first time we see exactly how far Luffy will go for a friend.
    In prior fights he always went all out, of course, even nearly dying three separate times two of which he Smiled through, and he's always been a fearless character. But he refused to even fight back on the Chance his extra motion might hurt or kill Nami in her weakened state, something he's only ever done on one other occasion to date (with a completely different premise granted), climbed a mountain bare-handed, bleeding, frozen, and by the end barely conscious, on death's door facing his only chance of life when chopper investigates, and the only thing he can think to do is ask him to save his friends.
    Obvious over explanation is obvious, but I strongly consider this to be a paramount example of Luffy as a character, both for future plots and overall motivations.

    I do want to say about Thriller Bark; like Skypiea, it's themes are becoming much more relevant in the current arc. Thriller Bark reinforces how this is an adventure story first and foremost. This is about exploring the world, building and developing your world view and character, and a theme is "one must have an understanding of the world if they want to influence it." And in ThrillerBark Luffy doesn't have a world view that can compete with Moriahs. Battles in One Piece are battles of philosophy and ideals and much as strengths, and in ThrillerBark Luffy is fundamentally wrong about the world. He isn't ready to lead it, because he doesn't understand it. When he's fighting Croc, he keeps getting up because Croc is wrong. Slavery, bad. But Moriah is just doing his job as a privateer. He provides a fundamental job for the stability of the world, and Luffy wants to destabilize that. Luffy doesn't know what that would do to the world, and it arguably doesn't need done. And that's why Luffy lost. Moriah, however pathetic and defeated, was right.
    And what's better, the man who fought Moriah and taught him his understanding of the world, is the same man Luffy is currently fighting. Moriah was trying to teach luffy what Kaido taught him, and Luffy lost because Moriah was right. Luffy didn't understand the world, but now he does. He saw the fall of a Yonko at Marine Ford. He knows exactly what this means for the world. And now he's fighting the man he was metaphysically opposing in ThrillerBark. This is amazing writing. Making Kaido the background development of Moriahs character, and having that be where Luffy loses a battle of philosophy, and then having Luffy fight the person who beat the person who beat him to show how much he's grown?!?! Amazing stuff.
    I hope this made sense at 3a.m.

      And without the anime, what did the foxy pirates part add positively to one piece? I cannot think of anything and an afro-luffy is not a good answer. I thought foxy pirates were just a bad filler arc. • @aboundedsumo7984
      @aboundedsumo7984 Год назад +14

      @@oguzcanoguz5977 So, there are a few things i can say about your statement.
      Firstly. A lack of tensions does not necessarily have to be a bad thing. If everything was tense all the time, it would get stale very fast. Long land is supposed to be the calm before the storm that is water 7 and Enies lobby.
      Secondly. The concept of Davy back fights being common knowledge among pirates gives us insight into certain parts of pirate culture. It reinforces the fact that the way the straw hats work as a crew is not at all the standard in the world, and that many other captains beside Luffy (and some other) would not hesitate betting members if it meant a chance at stronger crewmates to give them a greater chance of survival in the grand line.
      Thirdly. Character wise, it reinforced the fact that this crew is like family to each other. Choppers cry that he refused to sail the seas with anyone other than the straw hats, or Luffy’s determination to not lose a single crew member. It was all to set up some of the themes that would be played in water 7 with robin.
      Finally, it set the standard that luffy is not going to be able to win every fight so cleanly anymore. He was barely able to outlast crocodile and was able to take out Enel efficiently, but he won against foxy thanks to a fluke. as much as I can meme on foxy as a character, he did put up a good fight against luffy in his own shrewd way. And had luffy not gotten lucky with the mirror shard, he might have gotten even closer to losing than ever before. He then proceeded to lose outright to aokiji. Almost every major fight after foxy leaves luffy either unconscious or unable to continue without the aid of his friends. Aokiji, Lucci, Moria, Magelan to name a few. It is what sents in motion the idea that the crew might not be ready for the new world, a message which is set in stone in Sabaody.

Nico Robin's back story is one of the most impactful character backstories I have ever seen, and her own character arc during the story itself is so satisfying. I also cannot get over how great of a moment it is to see all the Straw hats ready to directly defy the entire world government and save their friend, who doesn't even want to be saved. This really made me want to say a thought I've had regarding wider OP discussion for a while, I really hate the way that people separate arcs of the series. There's so many points where it feels like pieces of arcs are arbitrarily cut apart. The Water Seven saga is the most egregious case of this. Separating them into Water Seven, Enies Lobby and Post-Enies Lobby implies that each of those are complete stories on their own, when they're in actuality all parts of one whole, and it's really frustrating to see that be the common consensus. It's the same way I feel about people separating the Android and Cell arcs of Dragon Ball.

    • @owain1077

      I know I am really late, but this can easily be fixed by separating into sagas. Summit War saga is also a good example because it doesn't rely on any of the arc names for the saga name

Luffy thought that Zoro disrespected the locals and didn't appreciate hospitality. Luffy is the captain and has to "punish" his friends when they make mistakes. Of course it wasn't a mistake by Zoro at the end of the day, which Luffy didn't know, but it was about a very important topic: hospitality

      But the problem arises that quite similarly in Arlong Park, where Johnny AND Yosaku tell that Nami killed Usopp Luffy straight out *refused* to believe them(even though he knew that both of them were good people as he had travelled with them for a short while) because he had faith in his "crewmate" which nami did not consider herself since the begining and even betrayed them by taking away their boat in baratie yet Luffy chose to have faith in Nami and listen to what she has to say.
      Now back to the whiskey peak fight, luffy just asked who did it and some random guy he met just that night told him zoro and Luffy instantly went into a rage strong enough where he admittedd he was trying genuinely to kill zoro when asked. Even though he knew zoro longer than nami(sure not by much but my point still stands). I mean he even heard and accepted zoro's vow of not losing ever again(in baratie) solidifying them both as partners in crime till the end of time so yeah I passionately(as evident by how long this paragraph went) agree with mark's point that this fight was heavily uncharacteristic of Luffy.

    I've only finished East Blue today but I really like that Warship Island filler arc before Reverse Mountain. It gave plenty of action for what it was, and that scene of Luffy cutting a warship in half with just his foot was just amazing. I really liked the fights all the other Straw Hats got too, like Usopp's fight against that fishman and Zoro's fight against Mihawk. East Blue's such a great first saga to start this series off with

      Warship island snuck up on me because I didn't have a filler list to abide by but I still found it to be fine for a filler arc. In the end it felt like it could've been it's own movie with some pacing adjustments. G-8 was the only one that I enjoyed the others were too much of a clipshow.

I honestly thought I was the only one who thought Skypiea was an astonishing arc, while I never connected to the discovery of America, I still felt so refreshed and whimsical watching that arc, more than any other arc, and yeah I watched it in anime! I want to add a small critique of what you said, or rather maybe just my own perspective. In Whiskey Peak, Luffy attacking Zoro wasn't as out of character as you think. Throughout the Alabasta Saga, Luffy is constantly learning about the outside world and how to act as a better captain. I think Oda wanted us to see this as Luffy learning to always trust in his crew by making the mistake of being naive and trusting someone else over them. We all make that mistake in our youth so it's fitting Luffy make it too. Overall, I really like Whiskey Peak so perhaps I'm biased lol.

      I think the thing most people miss about that fight is that, really, it's a gag fight. It's a gag fight in disguise of a serious fight. I didn't realize this until I started reading it with friends. It's actually really hilarious the way Luffy overreacts and how so focused Luffy and Zoro are to each other that they're not even noticing the "real" villains of the arc.

    Man, I'm really not a fan of breaking down arcs into "post" arcs or into smaller ones. People often split Water 7 and Enies Lobby, but it's all one story arc. Luffy and Usopp, Robin, Franky, and Merry stay continuously relevant from the beginning of water 7 until the end of Enies Lobby. The city of gold and ringing the bell are relevant from Jaya until the end of Skypeia. Everything "post war" is just more story stuff from the war.

There’s no need for a “post Dressrosa” because they never even got off the island, so it was obviously thematically relevant to everything else on the island

    The problem with Dressrosa is that it's too long of a runtime, with too little time passing in universe. Dress Rosa, when it was published weekly, took about 2.5ish years to finish, for a total in universe duration of like 3 days. That made many people who read it weekly very much fed up with it. Now, if you read it all in one go, you don't feel that. You're sitting down one day and finish the whole thing by the time you go to bed. But now imagine having to wait week after week for years, sometimes with chapters that have nothing happen within them pretty much.

    Oda does character development very weirdly for me. Instead of having gradual development, it feels a lot like the characters shift majorly in one moment rather then subtly over time (see brook after pedro, sanji on wci, robin and usopp in water 7/ eneis lobby… really just the whole crew)

      I would absolutely agree with you if it weren’t for Luffy’s existence. Throughout the story, Luffy’s strengths (his sheer empathy and friendliness) and his weaknesses (his idiocy and tendency to choose whatever headstrong, reckless choice at the time) are sprinkled throughout, and Luffy’s character development to me, truly explodes during the Marineford Saga, where he tastes true, utter failure by losing Ace. It is not until then that Luffy becomes fully confident and decisive in his abilities.

      In my opinion gradual character development works in some story but if u have a long serialization like one piece, i think putting an already developed character(s) works better than putting a gradual character development. One piece has character development, sure, but oda emphasized more to the scenerio of: "what if this developed character put in this kind of situation?" Kinda thing. Which is in my opinion is an easier(of course still hard though considering that this is a weekly serialization) scenario to write and works well with everything thats going on with one piece either situational comedy, dramas, politics, and scenarios like that in one piece, like the story writes itself if i put it simply.
