- Super Dragon Ball Heroes has introduced its fair share of wacky and interesting forms sparking a plethora of discussions. Its animation on the other hand is a topic that goes largely unspoken of.
So the question arises as to, how good is it?
What can we expect with prolific names like Tadayoshi Yamamuro and Naotoshi Shida returning?

honestly it seems like yamamuro's storyboarding is more detrimental than his supervision. although not personally appealing to me, his modern designs could be used better if more talented storyboarders/directors could at least manage to get them to do interesting things.

Something I’ve noticed that’s kinda interesting. They seem extremely careful about UI Goku. As if they’re trying extra hard to make sure that he’s never poorly drawn or animated. Especially noticeable in that scene where the minor characters are sliding around shooting ki blasts like Dokkan and then all of the sudden UI Goku appears and he’s animated like Super

Biggest cap i have ever heard. Ui scenes are worst of all in heroes. There is a frame where his face is not drawn
I love how, when Goku gets punched in ep 13, his hair ACTUALLY RESPONDS. It lags behind Goku's head, and flows a bit, like a head full of hair suspended in a viscous aura, instead of stiff blue spikes.
Man, it's almost like Toei should leash up Yamamuro; I mean, I'm not sure how much he was involved with on Super Broly (which I think is GOD-TIER DB ANIMATION), but there just seems to be a quality increase when he's not making all these pointless "corrections" in these episodes. Yamamuro CAN make WONDERFUL art, but I feel he's overstepping constantly and in the modern era? He's lost the luster that made his old-school art good. I dunno, I'm jot an animtor, just a man who thinks he's a critic because he ingests media like an American earing Mickey Dees.
He wasn't involved in Super Broly at all.
Yeah, the fact that Heroe's best-looking episodes were in part to his absence is unfortunate but at the same time having him step away from the main series and work on a promo anime is sorta the equivalent of doing so.

Tsuji's growth during (and after) Super has been pretty incredible to watch.
It has, I hope she gets more recognition in time!
Goku Grabbing the wall in ep 13 by Tsuji is underrated as hell, also hot take.
Ignoring DBS Broly, Shida's cut on episode 13 was better then Everything he did on super.
"Grabbing the wall" along Shida's scenes made this easily the best episode of SDBH.
He might of had more time to work on that scene, longer than anything he did on Super.
Won't argue with that :)
That wall grab made me lose my shit when I saw it for the first time. It's honestly my favorite part, even if it's not objectively the best piece of animation in that episode.
I've seen all different kinds of quality animation, but just grabbing a _wall_ and it looked that good? It hit me different

I love Miyako Tsuji's work in that series. That sharp shapes, that thin eyes, very late-DBZ-inspired. She makes character more expressive for modern design. All I wish when Super come back is to either make her, Hirotaka Nii or Chika Kubosa the character designer.

The art in Heroes is consistent and polished, but overall Yammaruo's supervising leaves it pretty Bland and Stale as a whole. Which makes it a real highlight when a Top Animator like Shida comes in a does an amazing action scene

To this day Episode 13 still features the best animation this show has had. Naotoshi Shida is a legend. Miyako Tsuji had some amazing scenes as well.
I'm surprised that Kale shot was Kitano, thought it was Tsuji.

Hirotaka Nii is so underrated in a way of how he draws the characters similar to Yuya Takahashi who inspired him with the episode 114 in Super.

I was really surprised seeing his work on the episode 122 of Super and it really resembled Takahashi's, but it had his sharp line work and using straights for the shading. It is similar to how Shida had used back on Z.
If there is one thing I hope Yamamuro eventually ditches, it's the hair highlights. I don't know why he insists on them so much 😕
They seem to be absent for Vegeta in his base form but not Goku oddly enough.
@@forgottenrelics1197 Thats a step in the right direction now all he has to do ditch any remaining highlights, cause clearly he doesn't understand how to use highlights properly. Then get a good color pallette and evolve from there.
@@sonicfan064 Colours are determined by a Colour Designer or Coordinator so that's one element not really on him.

The supervisors supervise so great when they have time that I thought it was *them* the key animators and Yamamuro just letting them shine through.

Edit: when i first saw this episode I was blown away. Talented animator
6:25 the difference is that in the original DB the very limited animation and repetition still looked better due to HOW it was drawn, how they depicted the characters' motion; the barrage of attacks definitely feels more furious there, less rigid.
Additionally, Heroes is very short and comes out rarely, so there are no excuses for it.
Only ever watched random clips here and there.
Going to check out episode 12 and 13 now for that sweet sweet animation.
I know how much harder these kind of videos are to make but I really love and appreciate them I can see how much work you've put in and how much your editing has improved

Well, Tsuji is a really pleasant surprise, didn't know she directed 13 and did all these notable scenes. Always saw her in Super like an attempt to copycat Yamamuro and to keep consistency on episodes. Seeing all her work on heroes I wouldn't mind her being a supervisor for the next installment of Super (High amounts of COPIUM here)
Great video. I like the idea of super heroes as somewhat of an exhibition for the animators and the franchise. I wish more of the dynamic animator’s scenes were given to SSJ4 spotlight episodes though

As I told you that fight in episode 13 is so good. Too bad that it’s the only one with that amount of quality and on top of that it’s so short, that if you blink you will miss it. Hope they do something similar in future episodes of Heroes, but it seems highly unlikely to happen again anytime soon. Btw good vid!
I feel Yamamuro does better art than animation. He can make ots of wallpaper-worthy shots, no doubt, just can't see it working in motion.

The shows animation is fine, but it felt like it was way too stiff for most characters (unless if it’s shida, the man’s a god)

@@jinxluvver3909 it can be both. Different animators work on different scenes. Shida's style stands out because most of the time the overall animation of heroes's episodes are stiff. Its why seeing shida's animation after all hose stiffness we saw is a treat
@@pisaschitt787 nah man. One cut of good animation doesn’t make a bad episode unbad, heroes as a whole is barely animated. Shida cuts are obviously his signature god sauce but everything in between bad
I really would like to see what Kubota’s models and storyboard direction could do to Dragon Ball. He has such a good grasp of old school DBZ and modern alike. His small seen in Broly was beautifully done.

I know this is a Dragon Ball focused channel but I would love to see animation analysis on One Piece because it is another Toei weekly production that I think has very interesting features going on

The fact that I got to see super saiyan 4 again made this higher than super for me. I enjoy Seeing all the forms that everyone takes It's just a dumb fun experience for me
one thing about this show is the style is way more consistent than in dbs which i like, and the quality is more solid which if that were the case for dbs it would’ve been so much better to see, even if it meant it took a bit longer for the show to release

Goku Blue VS SSJ4 would have been a different story if ... Goku's family wasn't right there. Neither would go all in with them present without mind control or something.
You say that but they think each other is a threat, and later with barely any movement away from Trunks Mai and Fajita they will go all out vs Cumber.

They mostly just trace animations from the show though?? There's nothing that special, sometimes they clean up the art a bit so it looks more on model but that's about it
I hate how they overuse the yellow hit impacts thing instead of using shockwaves, repeated frames, focus on hand motion trailing - like in Z.

Yamamuro randomly switching back to his old shading really made me think what he might've been thinking on that particular frame.
Maybe the criticism of his modern work finally got to him on that moment and tried to recapture his glory days?

I think he's just being rebellious at this point lol plus age. I think he still can pull off his old look but maybe he just cant draw it as fast as he used to. But again this is just my theory.

When you compare things to Dokkan animations in such a negative way, you mean the 2018 and before ones right? Prior to them reanimating actual full scenes (granted, they make completely original stuff now in 2023, like with AGL Vegetto Blue)

Honestly, All in all the art and animation of this Super Dragon Ball heroes is more consistent then Dbs anime.
Well, considering they had more time to work on Heroes, it would be.
The art style looks the same as the TOP arc.

Does Yamamuro needs to step away entirely for Dragon Ball to succeed? if so thank you for your service, but DAMN did ep 13 look so AMAZING! I remember first time watching it and was hyped, and I wondered why doesn’t it always look like this…just can’t have anything.
As awful as it is to say it i think he should just retire at this point, he refused to learn anything new in decades, mostly worked only in dragon ball for most of his career, he was pretty good during his time but his art not only got worse with the time but him correcting others people work drags down the quality of the product, there is also the problem on how generic, repetitive and boring his story boards are.
When he is not around new and old talent shine, i think him and how rushed DBS was were the main reasons why 70% of DBS looks awful....

I *_L O V E D_* the SDBH promotional anime. Had 100x more fun watching the mini series than I ever did with the DBS anime. But damn was the animation boring. It was like watching DBZ at its lowest animation points all over again. I'm REALLY glad that Goku vs Hearts came out the way it did but fuck damn. That really couldn't have been every episode? Why is it Japan just can't seem to do animation shit right with DB? Super and SDBH were boring as fuck in terms of animation for like 90% of both anime. At least SDBH had an excuse but fuck damn.

I understand why its limited in animation but why does it have to be so messy story wise? its hard to tell when a story begins or ends, i wish it was about xeno trunks and pan instead of more DBS goku and vegeta, hell i am okay with just getting Xeno goku as he behaves as an entirely different character.
Why not make it 20 minutes episodes where the animation is limited during dialogue and exposition but it improves during the action? bringing new talent that needs experience in animation, i heard TOEI its good at getting new animators, promotional episodes likes this are perfect for them.

I still hate this plastic look on literally any character in modern Dragonball except the broly movie, didn't really understand why they did this. Just compare Z and Super side by side and you can clearly see it that Dragonball just looks like a kid show, just compare Z Trunks to Super Trunks, it's really pathetic.
I guess that is mostly nostalgia. Aot s4 got mocked because the character dont have that plastic wet look anymore

@@therealprinceofnigeria no, aside from the apocalyptic schedule that Mappa got for aot,I've seen a lot of people complain because they removed the lights reflection from clothes and faces, while for dragonball it's the other way around.

If anything this is why people hate it because the shading looks like shit and the fake highlights make everything look even more flat. People complain because both of these shows look objectively worse than they did in the past.
