The Kakarot cover imo isn't necessarily bad. I like its simplicity. No need for anything over the top. The only problem is that people expected more out of it, which can be disappointing.

In a game designed to be big (even though it wasn't sadly) it shouldn't be lazy
BOB IGOR RUINED STAR WARS NOT JUST KATHLEEN simple does not mean lazy. There is a lot of creative work put into the composition and the draw of the eye.

The artwork actually serves it's purpose in the Dragonball Z kakarot. The focus should solely be on Goku in this sense. Throwing a random SSJ form in just to please the masses makes no sense for this illustration. Also with the name being Kakarot instead of Son Goku it only makes sense to focus on the period in time when he learns of his saiyan heritage in the illustration. Saiyan Saga goku is the only choice as having random childhood moments of his childhood as Son Goku wouldn't fit into the narrative of Dragonball Z Kakarot. In this case they actually nailed it in my opinion. The focus should be on Goku and his story. His story is more than just variations of SSJ forms.
I guess it's just up to interpretation, but Goku achieving SuperSaiyan where landmarks for his character and story and so for me I felt like it suited well. I don't think its bad but that it just could've been more :)

It's all ruined because of that generic red background, just replace with him going through the ocean, with Kamehouse in the background and it's an fine cover

Dbz:Kakarot had an alternate poster where goku is going towards us with all the villains he faced in Z in the background. I wonder why they never used that poster.

I truly think what made the older box Arts more exciting and robust was that they treat them like the VHS and movie posters! They included visually stunning action shots what's stoic, yet, well posed character's, placed adjacent or directly behind the figure with a very colorful background or unique color scheme to stand out with. Also, the golden hair of a Super Saiyan or the aura blast of energy attack added a nice effect!
My favorite would probably be the Budokai 3 (US) cover. The fist being so close, and Goku's face behind it, is so striking. Really popped out to me from other PS2 games when I was younger.
On the DBZ Kakarot cover, do you think that adding in a serious Super Saiyan Goku like how Totally not Mark added in his redraw would at least make the cover art more interesting?
Oh for sure, but even if it wasn't a serious ssj goku either way just illustrating goku through the years from child to adult is a great step :)

The artist of those SFC DBZ games did the best promo art of Dragon Ball throughout the 90s. It's a shame that they're still unknown and that they don't do art for the series anymore.
My favorite was definitely Xenoverse 2 since it's almost like it's giving you a direct hint to the secret endings (Future Gohan and Bardock) plus the art just looks great in general and I loved the gritty look. It's one of the few times I actually like an art piece that was like Super's artstyle.

Tenkaichi 2 is my fav cover ssj future trunks as the cover art (he’s my fav character) and then future iterations of Goku reflected in his sword such a dope pic!

Budokai 2 cover is my all time favourite. The drawing of goku ssj , ssj 3 and vegito are sooo clean. The shading as well is perfect and isn't over the top. That cover brings back soo many memories
I used to like that one but SS3 Goku's long right arm is distracting.

A great cover I missed here it's the one from the sole Sega Genesis DBZ game, BuuYuu Retsuden/L'Appel Du Destin, very in par with the best from SNES, same era and probably same artist. The Freeza and Cell of the background are probably Manga traced art, but the Goku and Gohan from the front are great.

I love ultimate battle 22 cover, how it has ssj1 and 3 back to back and the hair kinda blends in ,then base in the middle. Of course u play it and it’s not very fun lol

Tenkaichi Tag Team's cover has Goku with derp eyes looking up towards Vegeta's hair instead of making some level of eye contact. Just a funky little detail I've noticed.
Also, you mentioned fenyo_n when talking about the FighterZ cover. Do you watch anything from his RUclips channel?

Honestly I like the cover as it is. Sure at first I also asked myself if that would be enough but it grew on me. It's simple and something else. That's the reason I like it. Plus: if you play the dragon ball super card game you maybe know that they printed a special limited Kakarot, the one and only card just to promote the game and it just looks nice and clean :)

The best Dragon Ball game cover? Definitely Totally Not Mark's DBZ Kakarot cover.
It always confused me that Infinte World had 2 different covers, but the one on the left I like more and the one I own.
Reason why we have just simple art covers these days on video games is because we live in a time where less is more and you see the same thing you see on Dragon Ball Z Kakarot on other games such as Spider-Man PS4
Less is more has actually been an aspect applied to design for decades whether it was art or architecture . So it isn't anything new as games have also applied this choice for decades now such as The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind from 2003 and alot of sports games such as nba 2k etc.
So the reason this cover was lacking has to do more with uninspiring composition rather than the artist was just simply applying the less is more principal😁
Simple can work, compare final bout to it, it’s still only goku on the cover , but looks so damn sick

I liked the _Dragon Ball Z: Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu_ cover the most, followed by _Ultimate Battle 22,_ _Hyper Dimension_ (like you had), and _Budokai 2_ and _3's_ (Re-release) Americanized covers.
0:27 I can see what the japanese art was going for. The most powerful characters, who also stay relevant for longer, are front and center while less important characters are in the back. Like how Piccolo is behind Vege- wait a sec. Is adult Gohan behind Krillin? HE IS!
Great video, but you missed the Mega Drive cover for Dragon Ball Z: Buyū Retsuden. This one is original and I find it superb.
I definitely remember seeing it and it was a cool cover but I guess at the time I still personally preferred the cover (90s portion of games) for Dragon Ball Z: Super Goku Den - Kakusei-Hen. As I said in the video I kinda had to limit it down or else the video would never end :) But your right it's certaintly a superb cover

do not judge the book by its cover, the cover may look great but the content can be bad, while cover art may look simple yet great content.
I know it was a lot of covers to cover (pun intended), but you forget that one from mega drive/ sega genesis Retsuden. It is a really cool one

Dbz games peaked at Tenkaichi 3. Raging blast 1/2 was great,rb2 has the best combat system but they really have gone downhill.

@@spinceiling7442 that's largely why I say it fell down. Fighterz has a small shitty roster where half is Goku and a few dlc characters that are 5$ a piece,all should be default....and half are Goku. Only good thing about that laggy unoriginal lazy game is Android 21.

You know what the fans were asking for? UI Goku. GT Goku. Plus, none of them play the same. It can be frustrating sometimes, but who else where they going to add? Tao Pai Pai? Come on.

Burst limit cover is great
I like how he uses dictators to illustrate his points
Now that we've got an SSJ 2 it makes sense to go back and give all characters fulffier hair (make the change happen gradually) for ssj's form. Another detail I love that hs been kept (but should be emphasised like it was in J Stars) is that when he powers up, the fluffy hair turns to a glossy gold.
Now is the time to bring out the highlights and really separate it from sn SSJ that's more relaxed and just a consistent blonde tone of hair whereas it's otherwise gold or white like Light of Hope. This here should be the new meta to the scans. I might even go and make some

DBZ games started to become disappointing after RB2. i can't remember ever having as much fun with the later titles.
@Ash Williams I'm not real into db games myself but a lot of the original dbz games were predominately 2d fighting games so if anything current releases like dragonballfighterz are really a return to form. But as I said I never grew up playing these games so I could definitely be off :)

I loved the cover for Sagas. Had a type of energy that no longer exists today. Game wasn’t terrible but required a lot of skill.
And the Cover for Ultimate Tenkaichi. I know it might be a sketch over but it’s redone beautifully.
I know this is a matter of taste but I generally prefer covers with only a few characters. Covers with more than four look over the top and tacky to me. The more simple covers would probably look better with more interesting backgrounds though.
