  • In recent years Tadayoshi Yamamuro has attracted a lot of criticism from fans and even from several animators working on the series. However, this video will go over why Yamamuro was among some of the best to ever work on the franchise and how Dragon ball Z wouldn't be the same show without him.

    It's just crazy to me how someone so legendary in the industry, as well as someone who's been a part of the franchise since the beginning, how not only fallen from grace, but also seems to refuse changing or improving in any way possible. At this point, I just want to see something new from Yamamuro. Something different.

    While I prefer Shintani's style for current Dragon Ball (DBS: Broly was an AMAZING looking movie after all.) Buu arc Yamamuro's style is still the best DB style for me outside of Toriyama's manga. Especially the work Yamamuro did in Fusion Reborn... I honestly think that Fusion Reborn is the best in terms of artstyle and a big part of that was Yamamuro. Too bad his current style seems more... stiff and plastic like... it CAN look good (BoG REALLY proved that) but not always.

    DBZ 232 always stood out to me (7:45) as an all time favorite fight from the series. There was just so much more detail in the movement and attacks that felt much more like a real fight then the rest. I wish more of the series has stuff like that but considering the time it likely cost, I can understand why it wasn't more frequent.

    My favorite animators from DBZ have to be Kazuya Hisada and Masahiro Shimanuki. Their artwork, while not completely accurate to the character model sheets, was equal if not better than Yamamuro's in my opinion. Their animation was at the top for me because of how dynamic it was. The squash and stretch, the timing of the animation, the way they drew beams, the bulky muscles, the jaws/chins. It all culminated in this raw and violent version of DBZ that defined my childhood. Super kinetic and 3D feeling if you catch my drift. I'd love to see you make a video on them, maybe together since they're so similar. Great job btw, keep it up!

    As much as Yamamuro may be past his prime, he still is a legendary veteran of the franchise. Even some of his modern work can still be great. The tournament of power had some of his best contributions to Super with Blue Vegeta Evolution, and many episodes he helped storyboard, are some of Super's best. He was the animation supervisor of episode 131, one of the best looking episodes in the franchise.

    I'd say my personal ranking for story and artwork in dbz would be
    Namek/Frieza: Story (the artwork was absolutely amazing when it came out and it still is believe me. I'm not saying it was bad, just compared to the later sagas it was ever so slightly behind)
    Android/Cell: Story + Artwork (a nice in between in both categories)
    Buu saga: Artwork (the story aspect became sort of aimless right up until the end)

      Yamamuro like many animators in the industry still draw on paper so these issues aren't really to do with adapting to working digitally. Also, you can see his style regressing in the late 90's/early 2000s so this is a problem that unfortunately extends much further back than Super.

    I feel like Naoki Tate would be a great topic of discussion. He's gotten quite a lot of flack in recent years as well, but I think it's mostly unwarranted. Also, I feel like you'd be able to point out more of the work he's done back on Z more than any research I could really put into it. He just deserves more respect

      Oh for sure! I've brought him up briefly in the past and have been quite fond of his work in super however when doing the research for the Sato video and this one I came across a lot of his work from Z and didn't realize how well he could hold his own back then as well. I was tossing up whether to do him, Nakatsuru or Hisashi Eguchi next on this series so he is one that will come sooner than some of the other suggestions.

    Let me just say this. We are pretty lucky that Shida, at the very least, didn't change his style or lose his ability to draw incredible art and animate well. SO many of the original staff have fallen from grace (I blade One Piece, mostly), but Shida never lost his touch. We are VERY lucky for that -- just to be able to have small snippets of his work in modern Dragon Ball is so fortunate. And thank the Gods for blessing us with people like Yuya Takahashi to carry the legacy of people like Yamamuro.

    I wonder how Z chose which scenes to give these movie quality animations to versus the cheaply off model scenes to, there was always a consistency that one episode would be drawn great, while the next one would be piss poor...GT was the only series where every episode was drawn top tier in my memory, even if I didn’t like the story

    • @calebdonaldson8770
      @calebdonaldson8770 3 года назад +1

      It largely depends on if that particular chief animator is willing to put in the extra effort for well-drawn stills. At the end of the day, constant deadlines take priority, so he can only spend significant time on certain scenes if he is sure the rest will be done on time. Not to mention some animators have more talent than others, so their best work can be movie quality, while another animator might be mediocre at best. GT is a great example of consistent quality. The artwork had a more serious tone, much like Z. Super (usually) lacks the same artistic and tonal depth.

    Great vid, Yamamuro is a legend and his work on Dragon Ball will be forever appreciated but personally i prefer Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru and Masaki Satou over him, in both art quality and key animation terms. I would love to see what modern Dragon Ball would look like if Nakatsuru was still the character designer, since he clearly evolved into better things and has great modern work while Yamamuro... doesn't.
