One of the absolute best Dragon Ball as a series ever has. Looking at his interview you can tell he deeply respected Toriyama's work.
God i fucking love this guy. Have always admired his work and now I know his name. This is how I envision Dragon ball to look at all times. I always regarded him as the "High budget episode that covers and important moment guy."
His art in that Trunks episode was the best, it looks like what DB later became in the Cell saga, when Yamamuro took over as character designer.
This guy is a legend. The examples you showed are some of my favorite moments from Dragon Ball.

Same here man! As much as I enjoy shinatni's character I would be just be as excited so see Nakatsuru have a go with that role especially with all the experience he has gotten since the 90s.

SonGOKU 4LAC Nakasturu has come very close to toriyama. Shintani’s style id argue is more rounder than even toriyama’s early dragon ball work (pre saiyan saga).
@@songoku4lac168 shintani doesnt look like the manga imo, its his own style, nakatsuru does inherent the mangas style but he makes it look 10x better

Facts
He didn’t create SS4 akira created the concept design but he did animate it in the show.
Those japanese legends are the ones responsible for my love to anime in general.
I love how ALL of the parts that I can remember loving from certain fight scenes are all done by him (Although, I still like the Maeda designs more!).
Great video, really gave me a greater appreciation for his work.
Thanks, analyzing all his work for this video really gave me a strong appreciation of his work to! There where lots of scenes I had no idea he did either which is what makes these types of videos fun to research.

Good to see you back! Nakatsuru was always one of my favorite animators from Z, would have loved to see how he would adapt to Shintani’s art style for DBS Broly.
Thanks man glad to be back. And it's interesting because Shintani's sheet for kid trunks looks just like nakatsuru's for kid trunks in the buu arc. So it seems that Shintani might've got some inspo from Nakatsuru in a round about way. And Nakatsuru has had a tone of experience since Z with all the character sheets he did for digimon so I'm sure he would cook up something great.

Yes, I couldn't agree more, Nakatsuru's art brings wonders in the series of Dragon Ball. He even replicated toriyama artwork very perfectly, it takes skill to pull something like that of.
Toriyama influenced my whole life in the art world.. I'd like to level up and ascend to a new level for my artwork
His Digimon designs are also amazing.

Never noticed until now that Nakatsuru’s work has always been my favorite. Where in the hell do you find your info? I’m glad you’re passionate enough to do the research.
I think you should talk about Masayuki Uchiyama, despite his bad art (cell and bu arcs), he was a very important animator who worked in so many DB - DBZ - DB GT episodes.
I've considered it, although people generally like more positive style videos and I would have to bring a fair share of negatives as well so I'm unsure of how well received it might be. And I have seen a lot of requests for Takahashi so I won't rule it out but I can't say it'll be a video I will make any time soon.

Great video. I want to ask though, will you ever make a video on Fenyon? You mention him in another video which made me really happy and I think it would be cool if you talked about him, since he's so great at replicating all of Toriyama's artstyles

Watching this video again because our boy Nakatsuru has his hands up in the latest Dragonball project! I could tell immediately from trailers that it was him.
I think the best part about Nakatsuru besides his skill is his personality, especially the passion he has for Dragon Ball. Nakatsuru constantly idolizes Toriyama and praises him as a fanboy of Dragon Ball while Toriyama praises Nakatsuru a lot. Both deem the other as superior over themselves and masters of their craft. In a sense, Toriyama and Nakatsuru are the same people except with different circumstances and skills.
Nakatsuru definitely mvp. Then again, I love GT, so I'm biased af

He is the best! His style is so close to Toriyama's work! And he is a super veteran animator!
Definitely the best guy out there to do the job.
Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru was also involved with Beet the Vandal Buster and most importantly worked on the character design of Digimon from Digimon Adventure to Digimon Frontier and the many Digimon movies as well.
EDIT: I should also mention that Akira Toriyama was approached by Toei Animation and was offered to be the character designer for Digimon Adventure. But he suggested Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru as a potential character designer.
For me he is the dragon ball anime because it’s the first style I was able to recognize outside the franchise when a saw his drawing on digimon
One of my favorite pieces from him is during the fight between Super Saiyan Goku and Freeza. I don’t remember what episode but it’s the one where goku fights him just after names has been hit with the death ball and before he powers up to 100%. Such great impact and the trademark spinning in air, and the way he animated it really showed just how much more powerful goku was then freeza. Love it to death.
God that’s just another reason why he’s my favorite. Dude is so legendary

I'd like to know your opinion on Naoki Tate, his work on Super is very divided amongst fans.
I gave my thoughts about several cuts he did for an older video called Dragon Ball Gt vs Super battles. But overall I find his work to be fluid and interesting with a lot of movement within his characters, I wouldn't say his artstyle is my all-time favorite when compared to Shida or Takahashi but when in motion generally it isn't too noticeable so I don't have much of a problem with it.
I also hope to add him to this series! Although I am a little hesitant if I'm honest because like you said he is quite divisive among fans but regardless I look forward to making it one day :)
I’m glad you showed some of his modern dragon ball art at the end, it’s my favourite from him, I love the style, clearly inspired by Toriyama’s early 2000s work, I wish those designs became the new animation art style for super
How to identify between yamamuros cell arc style vs Nakatsurus buu arc style?
Well Nakatsuru didn't animate or supervise a single episode in the buu arc unfortunately despite creating the character sheets so I don't know if you could make a comparison in the first place unless you meant in regards to his character sheets. So in that case they way you can tell them apart is that Yamamuro had a distinctive way in how he drew ears and his work was a slightly more angular look to his characters than Nakatsuru's who still seemed to carry a rounder touch with his work.
I've always LOVED his Digimon designs. That art style will always resonate with me.

Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru and masaki sato are the most underrated and unappreciated animators
Artists* Sato's animation was VERY average and lacking, however Nakatsuru does get a lot of praise and he is a great animator only if he got to do more action animation, also Under appreciated? I feel whenever someone brings up Sato's work they're always praising it.

I brought it up at the end of either the masaki sato one or yamamuro video but for these less commentary/documentary style videos for lack of a better term I prefer to leave the features at the end because I feel like it flows better. Although this time I forgot altogether lol and realized to late. But don't worry they will definitely return in the next video!

When DB, DBZ and GT was a badass series, insane masterpiece drawings, ideas, soundtracks etc... Not the crap SUPER... Those magic days, ansiety to see anything about DB nowadays are gone... today's animation are garbage and no ideas... too much flowers sentimental people nowadays... i really miss the 80's and 90's...
