    Feel like Toriyama likes to subvert expectations. Dragon ball has a rep for having these huge muscular characters. People even describe dragon ball as "that one show with the buff guys". So maybe he got annoyed by it. First time i realized this was when ssg was first shown and how disappointed people was. Everyone was expecting Goku to be big and buff, but we got the slim look. I do prefer Toriyama's classic style though.

    • @forgottenrelics1197
      @forgottenrelics1197  4 года назад +126

      That's actually a really good take, in interviews he mentions subverting expectations and doing the opposite of what is expected so quite a solid point. Although moving to thinner designs became quite the norm for shonen in the 2000's so perhaps that influenced him as well.

    • @Dragonfury3000
      @Dragonfury3000 4 года назад +50

      And in the early 90s the anime did overdid the muscle mass for many characters in DBZ since that was the norm for popular shonen at the time like Hokuto No Ken. After the Saiyan saga you can notice that Goku looked less bulky because the character should look more athletic and not an exagerated bulk mass. In the Cell saga probably was Toriyamas intention to make Trunks look like a fool because he had soo much muscle with that unperfected super saiyan 2 transformation and probably was an inside joke at the time.

      @Cksurno 4 года назад +7

      You are a little wrong Toriyama did not try to destroy expectations, his style and skills in drawing simply degraded, since he did not draw manga for a very long time (if for example you will even draw like Murata, after 1 month without drawing, your drawing skills will greatly degrade and here Toriyama didn’t draw for many years, so the characters in Super look so skinny on concepts) you won’t be after the end of the dragonball, he painted only some kind of art, and after returning he was no longer that legendary artist, well, he also degraded as an inventor , as an example, if got some horrible design a new form-Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue, simply repainting the base form and regular Super Sayan, with a terrible aura(that's look stupid),it's not even super saiyan aura(even in GT ss4 have normal ss aura)Yamamuro suggested Toei to make some kind of cool new design, Toei could make Toriyama and Yamamuro work together to create a new form, but there is no need to listen to Gramps Toriyama, because he is a GENIUS, and even the most terrible design got a new form of Frieza,f*ck it feels like Toei didn’t correct what Toriyama was up to, and in combination with Toei rushing animators who didn’t have time to adjust the frames between the key animation, we got in Super-curve animation, poor design
      and a couple of plot holes,and i agreed with you that classic style is better.

      @@Cksurno That's not entirely true, Toyriama has done the art and story for over 15 manga stories since the end of Dragonball such as Kajika (1998)
      Sandland (2000), Neko-Majin (1999-2005), Kintoki (2010) and Jaco the Galatic patrolman (2013). Then there is all the video game work for dragon quest so Toriyama has been busy :)

      @@forgottenrelics1197 I think it varies between each scene, from what I recall some android scenes looked insane (Cell vs Goku especially), but others scenes seemed to have a bit of this sloppiness that really showed during the Buu saga. Best example of this in the Buu saga is that page where Goku kicks majin Vegeta after their fight start, and it almost looks like a draft.

    • @yoursonisold8743
      @yoursonisold8743 4 года назад +2

      I always hated how completely overblown the muscles were in the Android saga. It was like Vegeta was on roids constantly. You'd expect that kind of exaggerated anatomy from Hokuto no Ken or Jojo's, but not Toriyama. And their faces... why are their faces so tiny? Combined with the huge horse necks it just seemed kind of weird.
      Don't get me wrong, Toriyama is a phenomenal artist and I love the Android Saga the most out of DBZ, especially the fluidity of his battle scenes, but DBZ had a huge case of 90s bulk around that time.

    I think his artwork kept on improving more and more and adding more and more detail up until the '90s and early 200's where he perfected it. After that in the 2010s, he got lazy. It takes hundreds of hours to make the kind of quality work that his very best is so after getting as good as he thought he could get he took a step back. He allowed himself to be more simplistic and fall on traits that likely fall closer to his natural style. I don't necessarily think they're deliberate choices. I wouldn't call it amateurish, but he could be better if he wanted to. He could make his characters more muscular, but if he's not asked to than he won't because he can't be bothered. The more slender designs exemplify this. They're easier to draw. He just slips into chibi and ignores proportions. He takes himself far less seriously. He draws for fun, not for work. He draws without an audience. He only ever became more serious because of how famous he was and how much people expected of him. He's much older now and much wiser. Wise enough to know that he's not going to be happy perfecting everything he does. I prefer his older work, but I respect his simplified designs. Characters don't have to feel like they have weight when he doesn't care about the characters. His passion for art does not translate into a passion for all art. If he associates more with simple characters that look more like Jaco or Kaba than kudos to him.

    • @forgottenrelics1197
      @forgottenrelics1197  4 года назад +12

      Yeah I was thinking on similar regards that he is just having fun with his art and not taking it to seriously which is totally fine and expected considering how long he has been drawing, although for character sheets for an official movie like Bog I think being more faithful to the traits of the older designs would've been a better take but overall I'm still really excited whenever he brings out something new!

Example: Cabba, Kale. This look is fine for other projects like Blue Dragon, Sandland, but I can't say I like this look for a battle manga like Dragon Ball. With toriyama. Heres the thing. He stared off with pretty soft and rounder characters. However with Dragonball Z when it got into Z I do THINK i remember reading that He only made the characters so sharp and blocky looking (the style everyone likes) is because it saved him time and made drawing the fight scenes and such easier. But I do think he prefers the rounder work. He also hadn't drawn dragonball z manga in years.
    For example his recent Dragonball work is much more round. He probably would have made it stay that way. And side note the newer Goku picture compared to the old blocky styles. Has anyone notice Goku actually has a sole on the bottom of his shoes?

    I'm fine with some of his later, newer works, but I feel as if his time working on DB up until the Freeza arc and early parts of the Android arc was peak Toriyama for me. Especially when it comes to DB characters. It was here when he was building a good balance between this cute, cartoonish gag manga style and the action portion of the series. Again, there's also the point of characters having meat on their bones. Overall a great period. The Boo arc is fine as well, but some of his work during that time doesn't resonate with me as well

    Toriyama is an amazing mangaka, he's endlessly creative and his page layout is untouchable, but his modern style clashes with the cultural identity of Dragon Ball. I wouldn't go so far as to say he lacks respect for its legacy like I would with Yamamuro or whoever runs Funimation, but at this point Dragon Ball has grown beyond being just one of his works, it's a part of history and belongs to all of us. I think even his modern storytelling fails to take into account what Dragon Ball represents, which is a shame because it could lead to some amazing stories if he still wanted to subvert our expectations. I think Vegeta's development in the manga, especially in the Moro arc (somewhat lessened by recent developments but we'll see how they circle that square), shows how good the story could be with just a little more contemplation on where we've been. Instead I feel like we're stuck with formulaic storylines with one or two Toriyama-esque surprises that serve as vehicles for his new character designs to fight in.

    • @gsp6517
      @gsp6517 3 месяца назад

      Quit with this "Dragon Ball is ours" bullshit.
      No, it's Toriyama's work. It will be always his, even in death.
      This specific application of the "death of the author" principle only serves to empower talentless, entitled buffoon "fans" to think they have the right to dictate what authors have to do, even though they themselves don't hold a drop of a talent in their bones.

    It looks way more similar to how he drew that last pat spread of his characters in the original manga. Even in that, they are way more chibi but still similar to this imo

  • @விஷ்ணு_கார்த்திக்

    When you analyse Toriyama's Resume, you'd notice that he prefers drawing leaner&rounder characters. For some reason, he went through a phase during Freeza Saga where started drawing detailed&structured muscles, angular jaws and smaller eyes that made it look like it wasn't Anime.
    What people recognise as "Dragon Ball" remains distinct from most Shonen Anime. It doesn't center around teenage characters, the setting isn't contemporary Japan but a blend of Fantasy and 70's Retro-future and the plot isn't about teenage drama/coming of age but about Anti-Heroish Goku trying to test his test his limits. Goku's selfish thirst for combat and his backstory of Evil Saiyan Heritage is peak 90's grittiness, yeah Goku is a "good guy" but he's motivated by pure selfishness, at times he even puts universe at risk for it, like the time he allowed Freeza to power up to 100% or the time he refused to do a sneak attack on Dr Gero to save Earth.
    This is why i will always consider GT to be the bookend to the DB story, it retained the 90's idiosyncrasies that made Z unique. DBS is more of a colorful modern tribute to Z.

    For me personally, I do really like the BoG and some of the ROF character sheets. The skinnier look does look pretty good for the more “chibi” style. And I love the darker tanner colors used to color in the characters. But I do see the criticism. The main throw off for me is when the characters are drawn with bigger heads and smaller and smooth eyes.

      No. It was anew director that took influences from the manga more directly than Yammamuro. The reason they aren't twigs in that movie is because they were trying to go off the Freeza arc but the reason the new characters are still skinny is because they were designed by Toriyama himself and they adapted them. I think Toei knows if Broly looked like that, peoplewould be pissed.

    The moral of the story here is simple: Everybody gets old and feeble. Toriyama is old, and his sensibilities are more towards the cute and childlike. Just like how many old people become soft around the edges, Toriyama is showing it in his art.
    Because for real - no way do I get the feeling that Goku is a universe shattering character in his post 2005 artwork. But as soon as you dial it back to 1995? Ho yeah. Hell, SSJ2's overall design and artwork STILL feels like the most powerful Goku, Vegeta and Gohan have ever been.
