Renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, known for creating beloved series like "Dragon Ball" and "Dr. Slump," passed away on March 1st, 2024 at the age of 68, in the calendar year of the Dragon and 40th anniversary of Dragon ball. His imaginative works have left an indelible mark on generations, and he will be dearly missed by all of us.
Toriyama's art is characterized by black and white drawings with black areas and the use of sound effects in the Roman alphabet. He also has a comedic style that includes puns, toilet humor, and real-life people, and he drew inspiration from Journey to the West and Hong Kong martial arts films for Dragon Ball. Additionally, Toriyama has worked on every installment in the Dragon Quest video game series, and his designs are recognized for their distinguishing features, particularly the Slime character. Now this just hits hard man.
His angular style is the way I choose to remember him. When they replicate his style this is the one they should go with. Akira Toriyama's style is timeless and must be perserved.

The most incredible thing about his art to me is how he makes every piece feel three dimensional with very little detail. Simple, but alive and breathing.
Funny how his action scenes were inspired by Hokuto no Ken. He wanted to surpass that which is not an easy feat and he ended up flat out innovating
Not all of what you said true he did watch real life movies in martial arts to draw fighting the only thing hokuto no Ken has with db is that toryama want full fighting manga after his editor said he needs to because hokuto was famous in that one time other then that its wasn't hard for toryama to surpass him with his good paneling and the way he shows the fights
@@saadsami8860 he surpassed Hara with Dragon Ball Z not Dragon Ball. The fact that we got Z proved that it was difficult since Hara pushed him to do so. You acting like Hokuto no Ken wasn't groundbreaking. You wouldn't even have these popular fighting games without it and Dragon Ball itself likely wouldn't be as fun as it is without it. You Dragon Ball fans are biased and worship Akira.
There are a few spots where he did more realistic art (Cover of first Dr Slump) and the contrast is fascinating to me.
And we also can't forget how he used background composition. Like at the start of Dr slump we focus on Norimaki and Arales head the only in the last panel does he pull the camera out so we can see Arale is just a head!

Yeah his Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest art is his best work. His GT promo art is on the same level as his Chrono Trigger work.
Agreed, It's a shame there are only a limited amount of those stylized art pieces across the IP's. Imo it's true look into what he could do when he was totally motivated.

I heard about how great Chrono Trigger was for years and dismissed it as overhyped…but when the DS version came out and I saw the Akira Toriyama artstyle…I was beyond sold.
That same artstyle sold Dragon Quest to me decades earlier.
