I saw Geoff live in the early 2000s at a Las Vegas show and he sounded really rough. Frequent voice breakups, inability to hit high notes, that sort of thing. Not surprising, I suppose, since he was foolish enough to smoke. The damage just hadn’t hit him yet in 1984.

I think the look on your face said it all: astonishing vocal power. Geoff Tate has always been an incredible metal singer, and Queensryche has long been an excellent progressive metal band. I have read that Geoff underwent vocal training, actually here in Washington State. He clearly had a very fantastic vocal coach. People have said for this song, he went all the way up to a high E or E5, way up there. And even more, others have said his voice type is actually baritone. You won’t be disappointed by his best work with the band. I’d like to recommend “Silent Lucidity”, much more restrained but one of the most beautiful power ballads ever composed. And really, his vocal performances during the prime era of the group are all worth checking out.

You mean, same album as "Silent Lucidity". I almost went on a rant, because I thought you meant same as "Take Hold Of The Flame".
I like your choice, (without researching what the video is like) but the album song has a boring rain part at the end.
I would recommend "Promised Land" for range and versatility, or "Someone Else" if you need to stay in ballad land.
But if you want more of the early day stuff, "Queen of the Reich" or "En Force".
I know this will be ignored, because it doesn't follow the youtube formula. Too many people submit to that formula, which is why you can't break the mould.

But that's just his performance as those are easy for him w/ his relaxed voice. It's muscle memory for him. (That top note is an E5 if anyone wants to know). Thanks for reacting to this. This was the second song I ever heard from them. I was only 14 or 15 when this came out and was hooked from there. Their album Operation : Mindcrime is probably the greatest album ever recorded, in my opinion. You should give it a listen. It’s a complete story from beginning to end in an album. I know it’s not the first time it has been done but it is seriously one of the best ever. 🤘🏻🔥💥🙏🏻

He is widely considered one of the best singers of all time... His teacher was the "MAESTRO" in Seattle... Whom also taught Ann Wilson from Heart and has a who's who of rock vocal talent under his teaching. Jeff Pilson from Dokken took lessons, Chris Cornell from Sound Garden... Layne Stanly from Alice in Chains... I even know someone that took lessons from him personally. Others that have consulted the Maestro are Garth Brooks so style didn't really matter either.

Geoff has this cool super-clean yet sometimes "dirty" technique, not quite fry, just like a bit of grit in his tone, dude learned his own voice so well and he never strains, he gets right to the edge of strain of his own vocal chords but still belts out notes, and his breathing technique is perfect, rarely hear him breathe in unless he means it as an expression; you can hear his lungs full, keeps his shoulders back and his upper torso upright

I love the first time someone hears Geoff sing this song. Since the,l first time I heard this when it was released (1984), I thought this was the best hardrock/metal vocal performance ever, and Geoff was the best hard rock/metal vocalist ever. You hit on the key difference between Geoff and every other singer. He hits all the notes, but he does it with volume and clarity. There is no raspiness in his tone. No one else can say that. The only guy I think is close is John Arch from Fates Warning. Songs such as Fata Morgana, The Apparition and Guardian show what he can do. He just doesn’t quite generate the volume that Geoff Tate does, but he is close.

A lot of people claim Geoff had a 5 octave range but it was actually 4 octaves (F#1 - G#5) at least according to the internet.
It’s not really about the vocal range but the vocal quality in your range.
Rob Halford from Judas Priest had a 6 octave range.
I’ve seen a couple of vocal coach reactors claim that the 2nd jump to the E5 is basically a textbook example of a male singer signing and sustaining that note.
As others will note, the song Silent Lucidity is a great example of Geoff’s true baritone voice.

I saw them 7 or 8 times a d Geoff Tate is the real deal, he did similar things when I saw them. Don't sleep on the band, as someone who got in on the ground floor with them, getting their initial EP and then LP as soon as they showed in the record store, the original band was just as good on their instruments as he was as a vocalist, check out the albums, Warning, Empire and Operation Mindcrime for ample evidence of just how good they were. Nice reactions so far, you have much to experience but are off to a nice start. Amother Queensryche classic you would love is the Lady Wore Black, Geoff is again in great form, they played it at the show you just reacted to. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

I was hoping you would hear it but that very high note he his hitting is an E5. He hits it 3 times in this song and I don't think many people realize how incredibly difficult that is for a baritone male vocalist. It's the Holy Grail note and if I'm not mistaken, Geoff is the first male vocalist to hit this note in a rock band setting. Someone else mentioned in the comments that Geoff in his prime was untouchable and they are not wrong. This guy was given a gift and he utilized it in every way.
