You're right. Drums are my favorite instrument, and Scott's drumming IS pure magic! He was a complete beast in this video, and on the whole concert!
I don't know the proper technical words to describe the things I love about his drumming, but it's always unique with unexpected bits that really make the song! He frequently incorporates unusual rhythms and fills that are just killer! I LOVE energetic and inventive drummers, and he's the best, imo!

@@ZiggyTheAdventurer A real fan (hard to say that unironically with a straight face) would instantly notice that, for example, the drumming here is different from the studio recording. Those differences start early so one doesn't need to get far into the song. There are also vocal parts that are very different and easy to notice right away, like the riffing after the second to last big note, to just take something off the top of my head.

I am just 27 yrs old. In 2013 I've been to a festival where Queensryche played. Same day I watched Dokken, Ratt, White Snake and Aerosmith.
I had never heard about Queensryche before. But I remember when Tate started singing my jaw just dropped. I remember I thought "This guy can actually sing".
The way he could control his voice and project it so so easily was mind blowing.
I had the chance to watch him sing on Avantasia 2 more times and his voice still gives me the chills.

I was fortunate enough to see queensryche a couple of times, Including the empire tour, when they were huge. Saw them in a larger arena in the 1990s. Great band and fantastic vocals. Around the same time, even though they were pretty popular at the time, I got to see Dokken locally, at a smaller hall that held at most 3000 people. I don't know whether it was the area or lack of advertising, but there were only about 50 people there. I felt bad for the band but it was amazing getting an almost private show, right up close and next to the stage.

@@kelvinize That was just Geoff Tate, after he left Queensryche (he was fired 2012). During that time (2013), there was still a dispute of band name use between Tate and the other members of Queensryche. Notice that you will not see Wilson, Jackson, or Rockenfield in that clip. Recent clips (as recent as march 31st) of him singing this song, show him singing a modified, lower melody, and that E5 is nowhere to be found. I'm not saying he's not a still a good singer, but he's nowhere near his 80's level anymore, thanks to age, I assume.

This was an early concert of theirs, and even so they are so tight! Geoff was about 25 here, and the rest of the guys were about 20 and 21! Geoff IS super comfortable and natural on stage, and yes he is a bit theatrical, which I kinda love about him. He (and all of the band) really put their All into their concerts!
The original lineup, for me, will never be equalled again in musicianship, songwriting, VOCALS, or live performance!

I saw Queensryche open for Ozzy, for The Ultimate Sin Tour (I think) in 86, in Columbia, SC. I took a friend who didn’t know them. They opened with Take Hold of the Flame. I vividly recall telling my friend, Steve W,. that; “this guy hits a note on this song you believe. I’m sure he can’t do it live, so I’ll play it for you otw home. Well…Geoff shut me up by hitting that G5 3 long times, and several short ones. I was blown away, even 2-3 years after it’s release.
I think that’s why I enjoy watching Reaction videos so much. I may be only one of the thousands of viewers, yet it still feels like I’m sharing my experience with others, especially those who don’t know them. I especially enjoy reactions by vocal coaches/professionals because they can so clearly define what techniques are used by different singers.

I’ve seen a lot of people mentioning Operation Mindcrime due to its status as a concept album.
I believe Suite Sister Mary would be an individual song to react to on the channel.
The Livecrime version has a very theatrical version of this song that is amazing.
Geoff also has a version of this song that he does with his daughter a few years ago where she does the Sister Mary part when he was touring after the lawsuit was settled and he couldn’t use the QR name anymore.
At the time, not sure about today, his daughter was in her own band as well and I believe was dating one of the members of his touring band.
Both are very interesting videos if you can find them and you love that song like I do.

Queensryche is so awesome and I always enjoy watching the reaction of someone hearing Geoff Tate sing for the first time. I will never forget the first time I heard them. It blew my mind. No other band sounded like them. I still believe that Operation: Mindcrime is the best album ever recorded.

To answer Steph's question. When this was shot, everyone in the band (accept for Geoff Tate) were in their early 20's. Geoff was in his mid-20's. Their house engineer for this tour was my mentor for live and studio enigneering.

I’ve been a huge Queenryche fan since their EP. I own every record and have seen them many times over the years. I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting them several times over the decades. Always gracious guys. It was unfortunate what happened to the original band. But, I’ve seen Geoff out on his own and he still sounds amazing in his sixties now. Also, the new version with Todd LaTorre is pretty damn good too. Todd has a great voice and does justice with the old songs. My top three from this era / genre are Queensryche, Dream Theater and Kings X.

Wish I could have seen them when they were the original band.
The in band issues didn't really start until DeGarmo left the band, but IMO DeGarmo was the major songwriter for the band and even he had burned out before he quit.
He was a dad at that point and probably liked the idea of being able to have some influence in his kid's life other than a telephone.

Saw Queensryche when they opened up for Kiss on the Animalize tour. Pure professional. Pure talent. Nailed the show live. Saw them again a couple years when they opened up for AC/DC on the Who Made Who tour. Same story. Great prog metal/rock band that filled the space between Rush and Dream Theater.
    Their record Empire is epic.

I was pleased to hear Dokken mentioned in the same breath as Queensryche. Both were taking on the chin from the left and the right from other metal heads. Chris DeGarmo is one of my musical heroes.
When I tell other guitar players that I stole more from George Lynch than anyone else, they give me a strange look. I'm like... yeah man, can't you hear that?
