@@Vimana and to back you up on this, the audio track of the Tokoyo performance was recorded over two nights, iirc. No vocals were overdubbed. This is something they also did with Operation: Livecrime where they recorded two nights on the tour in Wisconsin during the Building Empires tour in 1990-1991. As with the Tokoyo performance there were no vocal overdubs just a few guitar pieces were fixed in the studio...I seem to recall there was a sound issue with one of the guitars one night and the next night there was a missed note or two that they didn't want to release to fans so they fixed it in post production. Geoff Tate mentioned during an interview that he goofed a lyric one night but they had audio from the second night, that's why they record at least two in a row, like an insurance policy. Queensryche's members have always been perfectionists when it comes to their performances but especially so when they are recording for a video release to fans so they made very few errors as a result. Edit to add the interview: "Here's Geoff on the recording subplot of Operation: LIVEcrime. "I know there were three shows recorded, and one of the shows was a complete write-off because we had some major equipment problems. So all of the Operation: LIVEcrime record was recorded from two shows. It's just really, what you hear is what you hear. Those are the exact recordings and we didn't go in and overdub stuff. I like that aspect of it." bravewords.com/features/queensryche-live-alone-and-loud This is what QR was known for even back in the day.
@@billwren5033 Ok then. I guess I believe you and Geoff Tate was being very honest. I still don't believe everything I hear and read so I always question everything. Especially in the genres of rock, hard rock and metal we want the musicians and the singers to be brutally honest in what they do. Sometimes we are overly critical even if we don't have any reason to. Who are we to criticize and even blame other people so easily? I don't think there is any good reason to bring people down. Queensrÿche has definitely been an honest hard working band. I've now read about what have been said about the concert by the channel "Queensrÿche Bootlegs" and by "rbrebrook" here. As far as we know the corrected parts still have nothing to do with the high notes that Geoff Tate sang for example. If some things were adjusted later it might have been only on some other songs. Who knows? When people start talking, then some people automatically presume that those high notes were dubbed in the studio. These things always get exaggerated. After a while people start saying that the whole concert was dubbed in the studio. :-) I remember that there's a writing on some newer DVD release by the band Rush by Geddy Lee (the bassist, keyboardist and vocalist). He wrote that he played a bass note wrong and it was replaced with a dub from another concert. I don't think he really needed to write that... but there you go. Sometimes these small corrections have nothing to do with vocals or probably just removing feedback from the microphone. Usually it's something only the producer or the sound engineer knows. The record company always wants to have a perfect product, which they could sell. These bands are usually so honest that they would like to release a concert just as it is. Is Geoff Tate a great singer? I think he definitely was and probably still is. It doesn't really change if we know that he also made some mistakes. This is much too common in these comment sections and discussions in general: Someone likes a person. Then someone else starts to criticize that the person they like also was not perfect and did something that wasn't so good. So what? I think we can like music without always ending up having these discussions. I've seen this exact same thing on other comment sections about other bands and Queensrÿche too. I finally commented about it. I probably won't do that again.
This man has one of thee greatest voices in metal. If you want to hear the high notes check out Gonna Get Close to You, studio version. For his lower range listen the official video of Empire
I also reccomend Gonna get close to you .. Geoff grabbed my musical soul in 87, and i haven't looked back. Very few bands have had the stamina of hitting the replay button like Queensryche.. amen.
Best voices period. I’ve never heard anyone like him or even come close. His control at all range is unheard of. There are many pretenders but that’s all they are. This guy is a phenomenon.
@@WescottF1 I saw him just a few years back, in a small venue. It was awesome, just 20 feet from him as he totally hit every note from "the needle lies" and several other songs I really knew well enough to know he was hitting the notes. He's STILL better than most other pros!
@@renegade4dio - thankfully he recovered most of his voice. Around Promised Land he was drinking and smoking heavily and did a lot of damage to his vocal chords.

Naw... These "reactionists", when you tell them a certain band is a rabbit hole... Hoping they continue to react to more and more of the same band... Immediately go to another band and react to multiple songs in a row instead. Hence, you get to one Queensryche song and then four in a row from Bob Seger... Or was that like 9?? To even think he follows our suggestions is folly. The rabbit hole begins with the whole Operation:Mindcrime album. Dare him to do that and watch in anguish as we see him skip over to another Jethro Tull song. Almost had him with a Blue Oyster Cult rabbit hole... But no. More disappointment.
@@DerekScottBland man that ain't negativity. It's truth. I've never said anything like that in anybody site. I just see the same pattern. Best live performing band in the 80's metal scene, bar none. Every member of the band was flawless from start of the concert to the finale. When they were starting out as opening acts for headliners their stage performance, music, vocals, and sound quality would blow the headliners away night after night.

One of the most underrated bands ever! Tate’s 5 octave range put him in a very exclusive class of vocalists. The band as a whole was incredibly talented.
As a huge Queensryche fan I always look forward to a reaction to this song. It's cool to see someone discover what Iv'e known for the last 35 years. Thanks, Jamal!
Classic QR is still one of my favorite bands of all time. Warning, Rage, Mindcrime, Empire, Promised Land. Those albums are all very special to me to this day.
I think he gets overlooked because he left the band nearly 20 years ago. If he were still writing songs and touring with Ryche, I think he’d get as much attention as Vai, Gilbert, Lynch, Reb Beach, Satriani, etc.
Hi Jamel! My pics are: "Is There Anybody Listening" (official video) From about mid career. Beautifully arranged, lots of harmonies, kick ass song. And from much later in career, "Jet City Woman" Live. Jeff had lost some of his range by then, but I still love this version more than the original. Take care!
Your reaction is the same as everyones the first time they hear this song. it truly blows your mind the vocal range of Geoff tate. saw them live many times over the years , awesome shows.
Geoff Tate was classically trained. He's an amazing vocalist. I've seen them live a few times. He always sounded sooo good. You should definitely check out more.
If you want terrific lyrics, I would recommend that you listen/react to Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime" live version from 1991-1992 known as "Operation: Livecrime". The lyrics from that whole album (released in 1988) are incredible, the story it tells is fantastic, and many of the songs still ring true today. IMO it's one of the best concept albums ever released! Geoff Tate is also one of the most underrated singers ever. He was never recognized for his singing ability like he should have been. At that time, his vocal athletics were up there with Freddy Mercury and other greats.
@@xXPyrophorusXx while in the same category of music, Tate's voice is different than Rob Halfords. Both can hit the high notes. But Tate is actually a Baritone. While I believe Halford is a Tenor (I could be wrong) . While I love both, I consider Tate's voice to be richer than Halfords. But to each their own.
This is earlier Geoff Tate and Queensryche - when he had his full range. You have to do something from Operation: Mindcrime; it’s their next album after this, a concept album, and it is 31 flavors of brilliant. The only sad part is that Geoff started losing the stratospheric octaves; by the time Empire came out in the early 90s, the top end was gone, but the overall chops were still brilliant.
Tate finally admitted in an interview a few years ago that he was classically trained. I knew it the first time I saw them live. The venue was new and having trouble with the sound system. He didn't needa mike. His movement on stage was identical to my brother-in-law the opera singer.
And believe me this man is my all time favorite singer n is Still going strong to this day!! Many awards for that voice its incredible!!! Amazing. loved watching your reactions!!😄💕
If you loved *this* song and Geoff Tate's astonishing voice, you will definitely want to give the band Fates Warning a listen. The very first time I heard their hit "Eye to Eye", with the astonishing Ray Alder on lead vocals, I was convinced Queensryche had released a new album. Turns out, it was their musical brethren, Fates Warning. Check out the videos for the studio version of "Eye to Eye", which is something of a power ballad, as well as the video for "Point of View", a much more aggressively uptempo, harder rocking song, both from the great 1991 hit album Parallels. If you liked Geoff Tate's voice on *THIS* song? Prepare to have your mind completely blown by Ray Alder's amazing voice, and his equally astonishing vocal range. In fact, there are those that feel that Fates Warning, Queensryche, and Dream Theater, were the founding triumvirate of the Progressive Metal musical genre. From Wikipedia's entry about Fates Warning: "A pioneer of the progressive metal movement, Fates Warning is often credited as one of the so-called "Big Three" of the genre, along with Queensrÿche and Dream Theater; namely, the bands who are most responsible for progressive metal's creation, development and popularization. Their early work, influenced by the new wave of British heavy metal, is also important in the development of American power metal. Fates Warning rose to international fame in the 1980s and has experienced numerous lineup changes. From 1982 to 1996, and temporarily in 2010, Matheos and DiBiase were the only remaining original members of the band, with the former being the only constant member. Their current lineup consists of guitarist Jim Matheos, vocalist Ray Alder, bassist Joey Vera, and drummer Bobby Jarzombek." (Guitarist Jim Matheos is also the band's primary songwriter.)

I remember that there's a writing on some newer DVD release by the band Rush by Geddy Lee (the bassist, keyboardist and vocalist).
Geoff Tate = GOAT
Most vocalists.....Geoff Tate- hold my beer
For real man! LOL
From what i understand this was the encore song after a roughly two hour show already. Tate in his prime was untouchable.
True!! LOL!
Seen them in concert and they were amazing. His vocal range was something to hear live!
Saw them on their Operation Mindcrime tour and on their Empire tour... great stuff. I saw them in the past year with the 'new' singer, he's pretty good, too. I enjoyed it.
I saw them in concert in 2018 with Tod Latore singing and he was amazing! Tate still holds a special place in my heart though.
@@shanehebert396 I saw them with Ratt on the Rage for Order tour and on their headlining Operation: Mindcrime tour
I've heard nearly everything in most genres of music, as a musician, and this just Blew my F***ing Mind 🤯 never heard it before!!!
Enjoy that, you're in for a treat
Geoff Tate was a BEAST! Check out "Operation Mindcrime" from start to finish -- UNPARALLELED!!
I'm glad he finally is reacting to it.
When you have that really good cup of fine strong java , most of the rock singers back then were good but some were just out of the park amazing!
Dive deep into them. They're musicians for musicians
Listen to the whole "Operation Mindcrime" album, it's a concept album where each song tells a chapter in the overall story line,
YES
This album is a masterpiece in music
Best album of all time in my book.
This will always be one of my all time favorite albums
That whole album
My favorite Queensryche songs are Eyes of a Stranger, Queen of the Reich, Suite Sister Mary, and Lady Wore Black. Enjoy, my man!
Mine are Spreading The Disease, Roads to Madness, Someone Else, Bridge, Mary Jane, Take Hold Of the Flame and Suite Sister Mary.
there are just too many to list. One of my favourites.
Too many to count, all good!!
Suite sister mary is simply phenomenal
Queen of the Reich. Yes
Now for the Queensryche rabbit hole!

Has to be the entire album, too. Not single songs. It's a concept(story) in it's entirety. Get on it, Jamel.

From one of the best metal albums of all time "The Warning"
Glad you finally made it to QueensRyche. I remember hearing them on KISW FM 100's "Smash or Trash" back in the mid 80's, since they were a local Seattle band. They have some great stuff out there. Operation Mind Crime is a fantastic album and along the same lines as The Wall by Pink Floyd.
This band was often ridiculed by many metal and rock fans alike in the early days, they to me, they we're so far ahead of their time, they could be as heavy as a lot of the early heavy thrash bands, but then they could also write sweet melodic inspiring music, great review!
In the past week or so Jamel has got into Bob Seger, he's about to go deep with Boston and now I'm predicting a deep dive into Queensryche. Isn't this great. Then I read the comments and there are 10-20 more excellent recommended bands/songs...we gonna be here a while :)

Great choice Jamel! Geoff Tate is one of the best metal vocalists EVER! And their tour de force album 'The Warning', is a top contender for best metal album of all time. I was lucky enough to have seen Queensryche at L'Amour rock club in Brooklyn, NY back in the day for 'The Warning' tour, and I can tell you that many jaws dropped that night! It was magical.
Neue Regel (on Rage For Order) is a great track by them.
LOVE Neue Regel.
1 of my favorites , in actual fact the whole album was a trip to Mars
Damn right!
Absolutely. Love that one, London & walk in the shadows maybe the most from Rage for Order.
@@novumdomine9925 Hi , try pairing London up with Fates Warning,
We Only Say Goodbye, has the same sort of drum feel , about @ the 50 second point of the song, like Queensryce the whole Fates Warning Album , Parallels is solid and cemented in my memory bank
One of the most "underrated band" ever!
one of the best singers of all time react to Queen of the Ryche n you will call him a vocal god along with Freddy Mercury n Rob Halford
have you seen/heard Hear N' Aid?! Freddie wasn't in it, but Geoff and Halford are, along with Dio, and many others. The video is epic 80's.
Add Steve Perry from Journey!!
Bruce Air Raid siren Dickinson?
Way to keep an open mind...I love all kinds of music from my favorite Queensryche here to Marvin Gaye... from Elvis.....the 60's, 70's, 80's..old school soul, rap...country, mexican, classical...
You should react to Queen of the Reich, the last song from the same concert, Tokyo 84. Then, listen to the whole album "Operation : Mindcrime"
He could do the studio, first video ever or it.
Unparalleled live performance by everyone in the band, they pulled it off live like no other band I ever experienced. And the singer was the best of his era and has not been equaled since in my experience.
"jet City Woman" "Another Rainy Night" "Empire" (Studio PLEASE)
PLEASE!!!!!
Take Hold of the Flame, studio version!
The entire Operation Mindcrime, studio version 1st, then 2nd the live version. Just in case you haven't listened to it before. Easier to understand the vocals. ;)
Empire was soooo well produced. The dynamics are top notch.
Della Brown as well, especially the acoustic version! The Warning, Operation Mindcrime and Empire are 3 of the best of all time imo!
Yes to this!
Doesn't matter how many years its been, I still love watching people's reactions to Geoffs voice and the amazing phenomenon that was Queensrÿche back then. They were very underrated.
Seeing them live was an experience you never forget.
You want something equally amazing, then watch the old MTV Unplugged sessions with Queensrÿche.
It will make the hairs stand up on your neck.
❤❤❤
As electrifying of a hard rock live vocal performance as you could ever find. Simply awesome in every way it can be.
Best live performing band in the 80's metal scene, bar none. Every member of the band was flawless from start of the concert to the finale. When they were starting out as opening acts for headliners their stage performance, music, vocals, and sound quality would blow the headliners away night after night.
You know a live performance is good when most people listen to a version over studio.
Thank you for answering to your comments and doing this song/reaction.This is a vocal performance that needs to be seen even if your not into Metal. One of the best live vocal performances out there.
It really is hard to overstate Geoff's greatness back then. What an incredible voice. It also helped that they wrote great songs too.
One of the most underrated bands ever! Tate’s 5 octave range put him in a very exclusive class of vocalists. The band as a whole was incredibly talented.
Was a shame when Tate was booted from the Band.
D-2 - E-5
As a huge Queensryche fan I always look forward to a reaction to this song. It's cool to see someone discover what Iv'e known for the last 35 years. Thanks, Jamal!
Classic QR is still one of my favorite bands of all time. Warning, Rage, Mindcrime, Empire, Promised Land. Those albums are all very special to me to this day.
✊🤘
Quiet Riot didn’t do any of those songs. 😎😂
One of the greatest voices in any genre. I was lucky enough to see Queensryche live 3 times and flawless every time.
I would do “Queen of the Reich” or “Lady wore Black” next. Then the entire Operation Mindcrime album in order
the amazing thing about queensryche is that geoff always sounded as good live as he did in the studio.
Just have to say Chris Degarmo is criminally underrated as a guitarist.
I think he gets overlooked because he left the band nearly 20 years ago. If he were still writing songs and touring with Ryche, I think he’d get as much attention as Vai, Gilbert, Lynch, Reb Beach, Satriani, etc.
They were never the same band after DeGarmo left...that’s where it fell apart.
And songwriter.
Recommend The Lady Wore Black from the same live.
Do more Queensryche👊🤘✌️
Hi Jamel!
My pics are:
"Is There Anybody Listening" (official video)
From about mid career. Beautifully arranged,
lots of harmonies, kick ass song.
And from much later in career,
"Jet City Woman" Live.
Jeff had lost some of his range by then,
but I still love this version more than
the original.
Take care!
Your reaction is the same as everyones the first time they hear this song. it truly blows your mind the vocal range of Geoff tate. saw them live many times over the years , awesome shows.
And all done without autotune, just pure talent.
And keep in mind this was legit LIVE!
And song 12 of a 14 song set! Amazing!
YES!! this is a vocal CIRCUS! GEOFF TATE IS STELLAR LAYING IT ALL OUT THERE !! ENTIRE BAND IS INCREDIBLE LIVE
Geoff Tate was classically trained. He's an amazing vocalist. I've seen them live a few times. He always sounded sooo good. You should definitely check out more.
My favorite song of all time. I've listened to it probably 1000 times. I still get chills, every time I hear it, as if it was the first time.
Can't help but cry everytime I hear this song. Reminds me of my oldest brother....a brilliant drummer who went way to early. Glad you liked it!
Back in the day he was held up in the same company as Dickinson, Halford, and Dio.
Personally I thought Tate was better than those three, and I'm definitely a fan of those.
@@davesteller6301 Does Tate surpass his master? (Halford)
@@xXPyrophorusXx while in the same category of music, Tate's voice is different than Rob Halfords. Both can hit the high notes. But Tate is actually a Baritone. You just witnessed one of the greatest bands ever. A true vocal acrobat leading a bunch of fantastic musicians. Epic stuff!!!
Their next album was rage for order. Then operation mind crime.
He has preserved virtually his entire range. He's doing all these songs live again.
I keep hearing this, but not true. Just because he doesn't squeak out an E5 with every song, doesn't mean he's lost his range.
Rage For Order is such a cool album.
Brother, without a doubt one of the greatest bands to step on a stage. So much talent…
Roads to madness and see in innfared and breaking the silence of the night and eyes of a stranger lol
Roads to madness is an amazing song. It's actually my favorite song from queensrÿche. Ryche and roll
Natural talent! It doesn't get better than this!!!!
Tate finally admitted in an interview a few years ago that he was classically trained. I knew it the first time I saw them live. The venue was new and having trouble with the sound system. He didn't needa mike. His movement on stage was identical to my brother-in-law the opera singer.
FINALLY!!!!! AHHHHH!!! I hope you enjoyed it brother man . Dig into Queensryche now. His voice is incredible. One of the best to do it too.
loved the reaction tnx. in his prime, geoff tate was one of the greatest metal singers ever...
From Wikipedia's entry about Fates Warning:
"A pioneer of the progressive metal movement, Fates Warning is often credited as one of the so-called "Big Three" of the genre, along with Queensrÿche and Dream Theater; namely, the bands who are most responsible for progressive metal's creation, development and popularization.
Their current lineup consists of guitarist Jim Matheos, vocalist Ray Alder, bassist Joey Vera, and drummer Bobby Jarzombek."
(Guitarist Jim Matheos is also the band's primary songwriter.)
That priceless face that is made when one truly discovers Queensryche. 😍 ❤️
