Dr. Gundry answers helpful questions from his viewers about diet and health. In today's episode, Dr. Gundry answers the question: "What is the Impact of Sugar and Olive Oil"
Chances are you could benefit from incorporating more olive oil into your diet. Not only is it delicious and versatile, but it can go a long way in supporting your health.
Turns out, a rather large batch of research suggests that the traditional dietary habits of those living in and around the Mediterranean (where olive oil is a main food staple) experience fewer incidences of chronic health concerns. So, does this gap in wellness have anything to do with olive oil consumption? Time will tell. Now is the time to ask how olive oil might be able to support your overall health, specifically, the health of your arteries.

Thank you for all the work you do.
I'm Greek and I eat around 5lt of olive oil a month, probably a bit less in winter. I don't eat grain and eat close to zero sugar for years. If you see my salad you'll think I use the vegetables to eat my oil, rather than use the oil to eat my vegetables. I also don't eat meat for the last 40 years, but I never gave up fish, I eat fish or seafood an average of 1,5 times a week. I'm 59, I remember I got an antibiotic one time in 1995 (Ospen, for tensils' infection, streptococus) that's that. Blood pressure doctors think is low (10-6.5) because they envy it.

One thing Americans got wrong about how we Mediterranean consume olive oil is that actually we use as daily basis regular refined olive oil for cooking, deep frying and just virgin olive oil when its served on salads or any other food that doesn't require cooking. So yes we got x2 bottles at home and no, we don't only consume virgin olive oil, it's a cost effective thing. Virgin olive oil is not a cheap thing.

The world is so confusing. The Whole Food Plant Based diet adherents are often citing the "Blue Zones," especially Ikaria, but they, in the next breath, claim that Olive Oil is as "bad" as, or worse than saturated fat.
I've been slathering my steamed veg with Olive Oil ever since I lived/studied in Spain in the 70's and have no plans to stop.
Eating "lectin free," however will prove to be a much bigger challenge! 😉

I have a question for dr Gundry as an expert and EVOO producer: I’m Italian born and raised and there’s no meal I have that is not seasoned w extra virgin olive oil. I have it raw on salads and in stir fries or pan seared meat and fish. Recently I have happened to listen to a podcast where a lady doctor (I don’t want to say the name to be fair) said that EVO is healthy if consumed raw-cold, but not if warmed up in a pan. Can you let me know if this statement has a scientific foundation, or if I can consider healthy to cook with extra virgin olive oil? I appreciate your feedback.
