“They are both responsible”… No, Guy Reffitt committed the crime. His son did nothing wrong and is not responsible for his father’s behavior. He made a difficult choice to turn in his own father but he followed through with what he thought was right despite the impact it would have on him and his family. And as we see Jackson is the one being ostracized by his family not the criminal who is in prison.
It’s funny the mother and two daughters seem to only care about how it has impacted them. She should be picking out a prom dress.. and that’s Jackson’s fault for turning in a wanted man and not the fault of the grown man.. the patriarch of the family who decided his extremist views took priority over being their for his family. “He took away the last years of me growing up with my dad”.. again the dad’s decisions led them to where they are.
The denial and misplaced blame is disgusting. 🤮

IN CASE YOU WANTED AN UPDATE:
Guy Reffitt, 49, was found guilty in March 2022 on five felony counts, including obstruction of an official proceeding and interfering with police in a riot. The Capitol rioter turned in by his son got 87 months in prison. His sentence is the longest imposed on any of the US Capitol rioters. He was facing a 15 year prison term. The judge declined to apply domestic terrorism enhancement.
His wife Nicole Reffitt told reporters the trial shows that "corrupt, evil politicians here in this city" are trying to undermine US civil liberties. "This isn't just about Guy Wesley Reffitt. This isn't about just January 6th. This is about our liberties being stomped on," she argued.
I honestly don't know why the son wants to talk to his family if this is how they feel. I am so glad he turned his father in to the FBI.

“An apple is nothing but a seed's escape vehicle, just one of the ingenious ways they hitch rides -- in the bellies of animals, or by taking to the wind -- all to get as far away from their parents as they possibly can. So is it any wonder the daughters of dentists open candy stores, the sons of accountants become gambling addicts, the children of couch potatoes run marathons? Alfons Heck, then a member of the Hitler Youth, recalled the effects of the law. In 1938, he was living with his grandparents when his father came to visit.
In retrospect, I think it was the last time my father railed against the regime in front of me. . . . He wasn’t much of a drinker, but when he had a few too many, he had a tendency to shout down everyone else, not a small feat among the men of my family. “You mark my words, Mother,” he yelled, “that goddamned Austrian housepainter is going to kill us all before he’s through conquering the world.” And then his baleful eye fell on me. “They are going to bury you in this goddamned monkey suit [his Hitler Youth uniform], my boy,” he chuckled, but that was too much for my grandmother.
“Why don’t you leave him alone, Du dummer Narr [you stupid fool],” she said sharply, “and watch your mouth; you want to end up in the KZ [the German abbreviation for concentration camp]?”
He laughed bitterly and added: “So, it has come that far already, your own son turning you in?” My grandmother told me to leave the kitchen, but the last thing I heard was my father’s sarcastic voice. “Are you people all blind? This thing with the Jews is just the beginning."

@@77Amnita That may well be the case (& I appreciate you raising the point respectfully 👍), but even manga would have value here. It's an art form from another culture, which often conveys moral and ethical plots and teaching points - so it'd fulfil many of the goals that other, more conventional books would (access to other cultures and plots/story lines that can prompt the reader to assess their own character and attributes, etc).
That said, I saw a good mix of different books on that shelf. But, even if they were all just fairy stories and comic books, it would have a better impact on his character (most teach the premise of acceptance and good overcoming evil) than staring at a phone or visiting echo-chamber websites like at least his father was clearly doing (& I suspect this was supported by at least his mother, too...Otherwise, why did she stay with him while he went down the rabbit hole for 21 years?).
Thinking about it, manga may have also provided a firm of escape for the lad. With parents like that, I think most of us would want to escape to a different reality for a bit - even if it's just through a book 🤷‍♀️

What a toxic situation the mom and daughter have put their son/brother into. "I blame both of them" is such a scapegoat answer for someone who doesn't want to acknowledge the reality of what their father did, or accept that those actions have consequences. She's angry at her brother for taking away time with their father? Your father made choices, and he's imprisoned because of those choices. There is no one to blame but him. To the son, there's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said by countless others on here, save for this: do not let this define the rest of your life. Work through the guilt issues with friends and loved ones who are level-headed, and perhaps a therapist who has no skin in the game. You don't deserve to carry the weight of your father's actions on your shoulders; that is his cross to bear, and unfortunately, so long as your family makes excuses for him, theirs as well. But not yours. Right is right, and wrong is wrong. You did the right thing.

Alfons Heck, then a member of the Hitler Youth, recalled the effects of the law that encouraged citizens to report their family or friends who disparage the (Nazi) Party. In 1938, he was living with his grandparents when his father came to visit. See quote:
“In retrospect, I think it was the last time my father railed against the regime in front of me. . .

Not trying to stereotype, but from a demographic standpoint, it’s was already extremely likely that the spouse would agree with her husband to the end. It’s unfortunate that the daughter decided to follow suit.

It is obvious the son has more morals and ethics than rest of his family. One of the daughters, at least, is seriously misguided in saying her brother was wrong to turn in his father.

Jackson is a young man with great integrity, who understands that there are limits to family loyalty. When a family member with extremist views commits criminal acts & endangers our democracy, he needs to be held accountable. I think the women in this family are codependent & are only thinking of themselves. They want to live in a pretend world, where their family is wholesome & good. It’s like pretending you don’t have cancer, when you’ve been diagnosed by experts.

Totally agree. But with cancer only ur life is on the line. You can do what you want that Diagnosis. I would compare it more, maybe, to severe form of mental illness. And then helping them not take their meds, while letting them board a plane or something. Screwed up.

The wife is the problem too. Jackson is very very brave. The dad broke up his own family. His actions of going to the capitol are what led to his families financial struggles and the divide of his family. Your dad’s a criminal girl, so the hope of him not getting caught by the FBI is delusional.

    - _"I have twenty-one years of telling him 'you can't say things like that' ."_
Seriously, lady, after about the first two years it's clear that that's not changing _anything_ .
I absolutely understand that it's a tough call to divorce your husband just because he's, well, *that* uncle at Thanksgiving, and then the 'frog in hot water' effect sets in. But when he starts threatening your children, that should be the wake-up call.
And, fun aspect: the less social support there is, the more likely it is for a family to stay in the hands of a violent extremist because of " how would I pay the bills" .
