I married a woman with three preteen and early teen children. Never once did they say "I don't have to listen to you cuz you're not my dad." Then again never once did I really have to discipline them. They came from a broken home yet turned out perfect! They had a good mom that taught them good values. Generally speaking,people naturally know right from wrong, the problem is that too many people just ignore the voice in their head telling them they are wrong, this young man decided to do the right thing and speak up, rather than blindly follow his family down the rabbit hole, that takes an enormous amount of courage, and I applaud him for it, some times doing the right thing is not easy and it may be painful, it may turn your life upside down, but it is still the right thing and as long as you know you did the right thing, you'll be ok, the only person you are forced to live with is yourself, so be true to yourself and stick to your truth.

I will say I'm in my sixties and honestly for the most part I've enjoyed the choice I made not to have kids. I believe the reason being is of my passion to really follow my desire to learn every possible about dogs! After all these years I've never lost my passion for that one big drive in me. I have several other hobbies that keeps me occupied, but my dogs are always with me.
Funny as I've gotten older I've began to notice that approx. 90% of the people I train my dogs with are also childless. I've never psychoanalyze that subject matter, cause honestly I could care less. (Probably because even though we train together, the motive of the relationship we're striving for with our dogs couldn't be more different!)
