I'm Portuguese and I almost cried watching the Capitol scenes live on the news. It almost doesn't matter where you're from in the face of something like this-- Democracy was at stake. As someone from a country which experienced a dictatorship for decades on end during the 20th century, those images were a violent reminder that you cannot, at any point, take democracy for granted. When people ask you "what's the point of voting anyway?", THIS is the point of voting. You vote to keep democracy alive and away from those who wish it harm.
I’m watching this with tears rolling down my cheeks,, tears of sadness, hopelessness, shame, fear and anger. As an true American citizen, I am feeling all of these emotions at once, all because of the one person who was appointed to serve & protect our people. The President was borderline enthusiastic over the protests and did not want to condemn them, multiple people said. Trump agreed to record a short video only after multiple staffers and GOP lawmakers lobbied him to make a statement and the President offered praise and understanding for those who had broken past barricades, two people added.
I have always looked up to these gentlemen for moments of light amongst all this chaos. Seeing these gentlemen with such somber faces and expressions.... TRULY HURTS. May the light once again shine upon the American people. God bless.
