Listening to this again a few years later. Beck has *extensive* musical knowledge - traditional Western orchestral instruments, Alpine horns, a yodeler (!), Chinese instruments, a gospel choir... you don't just say "hey, let's do something different", you have to THINK about this. Aside from the fact it's an amazing cover, it showcases his deep knowledge and his respect for music.

This is what Beck said to Rolling Stone about that cover: "I covered "Sound and Vision" a couple years ago with almost 200 other musicians. It was surreal and insane trying to get that many people to play together at the same time. I never heard anything from him about it, but I hope that it didnt make him cringe or anything. Gracious sakes man... what a tribute. i don't think this was just a simple cover of DB's original. Everyone sounded wonderful. The Grammy's couldn't handle something this large because the production would have been too big for them.
This is exactly what I believe music is, a combination of styles, origins, rythms that join together to create feelings on us. What an amazing ride Beck took us on
+arfer After Bowie's death, Beck told Rolling Stone magazine he'd never heard back from Bowie about this performance, but that before it came out Bowie had tweeted to his fans that it was forthcoming, I think because Beck asked his permission to use the song. Bowie has said he wished he'd asked Curt Cobain why he was inspired to record The Man Who Sold the World. So maybe Bowie just didn't go out of his way to comment to other artists about their covers of his songs. I want to believe he heard and loved it.
Listening to Beck & co. recreating the masterpiece by the late great David Bowie, I am reminded as to why we as a human species are put on earth and why we come in all shape and sizes. Every musicians that is in this recording bring in their own small piece of sound to the overall composition. Every sound is different & unique, yet when played together, they create a harmonic soundscape that is by far greater than the sum of its parts. An analogous as to why it is important to respect one another, regardless of race, religion, political stance, background, social status and the likes. Only by working together and respecting one another can these individual noises can come together and create music. #sayingnotoracism
I know people always don't have to like everything but the 44 people that hit dislike to this are out of their damn minds. The arrangement for this song is insane and true music and musicians

+Sean McGerry I agree, this could have been a great tribute, respectful and creative... Bowie deserved better than what I've seen so far. The performance at the Brit's awards was ok because it was his real band, and they worked with him, but Lorde was a bit dry for me, sorry.

So this is … Perfect. I think David would have loved this.
This is easily one of the most moving musical performances I have seen. And I have seen some S**T! We are lucky to be alive at the same time as Beck. He truly is one of the great musical talents; not ahead of his time, but perfect right in it. I take him for granted sometimes, I plan on remedying that tomorrow.
Wow! The most amazing ensamble i’ve seen!, all the instruments from around the globe! The musical styles!! From Gospel to Ka leo ki'eki'e !!!!!!! Spechless O_O’... just amazing! An absolute sound explotion and a real tribute to music itself!
Sound and Vision was the first Bowie song I’ve ever heard. Only listened to pop before ... and music has never been the same. Got all the Bowie albums. To the man who saw music as another form of painting ... he paints with sound and vision. Bowie’s music lives on.
@andreapinkpawsx . . . Just wanted to tell you that your comment here is my favorite of the bunch. There is so much love behind it. Beck is known for being a huge Bowie fan himself, and this "reimagining" is clearly a labor of love and admiration. The world has lost so many treasured musicians this year, but I can't think of any as intensely mourned as David Bowie.
What's cool about this version is that it's a synthesis of the musical styles that shaped and informed Bowie's music. It's a bit over the top at times, but wasn't Bowie exactly that? I can imagine the hard work that went into creating and rehearsing this Low's highlight. Congratulations to everyone involved!
That last minute always gives me crazy goosebumps. This is what a sincere tribute looks like (I know this is a couple years old, but still) and not that stuff that Gaga did. Beck should've performed this at the Grammys, especially because Bowie loved that performance, and not Gaga.
In my mind...and I know it's only my mind...music reached its pinnacle the day I heard this work of art. Bless you Beck x
In 7.5 billion years when the sun expands and consumes this Earth, David Bowie will still have been ahead of his time.

+Carolyn O'Donnell YES YES... YES
I feel like I should have had to pay money to see this. OMG!!! Utterly brilliant!! 🔥
I love it all.... the choir, whistlers, yodeler, the arrangement, musicians and of course Beck!! Wow, what a performance!! ❤️❤️❤️
No me canso de escuchar esta demencial version. ❤
Bowie no se merece menos.
As a very long time Bowie fan, I have to say I'm impressed!
Wow! The most amazing ensamble i’ve seen!, all the instruments from around the globe! The musical styles!! From Gospel to Ka leo ki'eki'e !!!!!!! Spechless O_O’... just amazing!
An absolute sound explotion and a real tribute to music itself!
And there is still nothing more to say
Goosebumps when it finally kicks in
What a massive production... the musicians, the backup singers, the venue, the audience, the photography... wow!
Thank you for posting- this QUALITY awesomeness! Beck inspires and ignites!
Amazing piece of music, he nailed it. I absolutely love it
BRILLIANT COVER. BECK IS A GENIUS.
Sound and Vision was the first Bowie song I’ve ever heard. Only listened to pop before ... and music has never been the same. Got all the Bowie albums. To the man who saw music as another form of painting ... he paints with sound and vision. Bowie’s music lives on.
I suspect that Bowie loved this.
I love Beck and for him to do his version of my heroes song has blown me away! This was just amazing!
+andreapinkpawsx I am with you on that! Absolutely gorgeous....
+Ineffable Oracular i'm so happy with this, lovely and amazing, make me cry
+Pilar Antonieta Rios ...i really mis him
@andreapinkpawsx . .
Epitome of ‘Sound and Vision’. Wonderful.
Beck is a modern-day David Bowie. Couldn't be better demonstrated than by this performance.
There will never be another David Bowie.
The vocal virtuosity alone makes it an absurd comparison.
There is hope for us all, in us all, in music
What's cool about this version is that it's a synthesis of the musical styles that shaped and informed Bowie's music. It's a bit over the top at times, but wasn't Bowie exactly that? I can imagine the hard work that went into creating and rehearsing this Low's highlight. Congratulations to everyone involved!
This is painfully brilliant.
Mr Beck, I doff my cap to you Sir.
I thought, “Hmm, I like David Bowie, and I like Beck. Why not?”
I was not disappointed.
Listening to this with headphones is fucking phenomenal
Same:-) I got scared at first because I thought my blood pressure jumped up!
That last minute always gives me crazy goosebumps. This is what a sincere tribute looks like (I know this is a couple years old, but still) and not that stuff that Gaga did. Beck should've performed this at the Grammys, especially because Bowie loved that performance, and not Gaga.
