    Just a reminder that a few days before this Rolling Stone didn't include Prince in the top 100 guitarists of all time. I can't help but feel this was Prince's way of reminding them that he's not just one of the best, he's royalty.

      bro ur full of shit that’s not what he said at all. Prince let the leads get jacked by Lynne’s guitarist in rehearsals and wasn’t showing anything. All the production crew was worried that prince was gonna flop but Dhani Harrison felt like he was holding back instead. Prince gave up the mid solo to Lynne’s guitarist and just took the last one. The look on Dhani’s face is 101% an oh fuck here it comes excited thing

    • @realguy640
      @realguy640 7 лет назад +22

      yes, and in a studio, Prince can do a Pink Floyd favorite by HIMSELF. That is praising Floyd, as their music live was so magical. This video when it came out shocked a lot of casual fans, but I always knew he could play like this, and better - if you listen to most of his work, he is a very emotional player with masterful sense of vibrato and bends, and this song was made for him to hit out of the park. Clapton is a huge fan, and he must have LOVED it. PRINCE IS AN ALL TIME GREAT. BUt none of the all time greats has mastered all the instruments and can play as many styles as Prince, plus sing and dance? No one comes close.

    • @nemo_sub5476
      @nemo_sub5476 7 лет назад +19

      An understatement :) whoever thought of asking Prince to do this needs a medal on so many levels, its a lovely nod to George (both were creative and experimental songwriters), a nod to Eric's original solo which was in itself a 'step out' for the Beatles, it brings attention to this great song once again, it shows Prince as a more consummat artiste alongside respected contemporaries and as an individual guitar player... I could go on but you get the idea. 35 million views cannot be wrong.

      @M C That's what they said about jazz.. Rock n Roll... hip-hop... metal... movies... comic books... books... literally everything popular throughout history at one time or another. Kids have listened, read, consumed, and played inappropriate things since entertainment was a thing (so, forever). And everytime, old curmudgeons ramble about how it's terrible, and how their music was so much better. Your parents did it. Your grandparents did it. Their parents and grandparents, and so on. Such is art, and growing up in a cultured society.

    TOM PETTY is best known for his UNIQUE, yet VERY DISTINCTIVE VOICE. Hearing him in this video made me want to MELT into BUTTER! His voice was nothing short of TOTALLY SPOT ON & INCREDIBLY FANTASTIC!
    As for the fabulous PRINCE, there are NO adequate words to describe his MULTI-PHENOMENAL talents other than: "MULTI-PHENOMENAL!" I truly belive that Prince was giving the great George Harrison a sincere TIP OF THE HAT as a grand gesture of respect. Prince was praised by his peers for his incredible PERFECTION and ATTENTION to details. He always exuded AMAZING EMOTION and added a RICHNESS of DEPTH to every song he wrote and sang and every concert he gave. These traits also carried over to the plethora of artists that he composed for.
    All the while, I am being ENTHRALLED at just how much DHANI HARRISON resembles his AWESOME Dad.
    I ADMIRE, RESPECT & TRULY MISS THE GREAT MUSICIANS ON THIS STAGE WHO ARE NO LONGER WITH US. 💔
    GEORGE HARRISON wrote TREMENDOUS music, & THIS SONG will ALWAYS be my FAVORITE.

  • @HobbitMadness
    @HobbitMadness 8 лет назад +314

    I've been looking at/listening to this incredible performance for the better part of 3 years now. It's amazing to me how folks want to minimize and in some cases downright belittle Prince's solo work here, just because it can be imitated and copied (to a pretty close degree) by amateur guitar players who are plainly much less talented than he is.
    For my money, great guitar solos aren't necessarily about degree-of-difficulty. It's about how those solos affect you as a listener, and for me as a retired professional musician, how they affect me personally. As a young man I played country and country/rock music for a living, 75% of the time it was country fiddle, 25% of it was country/rock rhythm guitar.
    I had the good fortune to be given violin lessons starting as a 4-year-old boy. I majored in music and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. I've played every Beethoven symphony at least once (Beethoven composed 9 symphonies), and I don't know how many times I've played the 5th.
    If you ask a classically trained violinist, they'll tell you that the violin parts (1st and 2nd violin parts) for Beethoven's 5th are not very difficult to play for a professional violinist, especially when compared to many other pieces in the classical music repertoire.
    But Beethoven's 5th is great because the music is PROFOUND. Not because it's difficult to play.
    This is how Prince's solo work strikes me here in this incredible performance. To state the obvious, if you'll notice, it's other guitar players copying Prince (one young man on this thread has a RUclips clip of himself imitating Prince's solo on this song); NOT Prince imitating other guitar players.
    Prince wrote these fabulous guitar interludes. They may not be Eddie van Halen/Ingwe Malmsteen, speed-of-light blaze-fests. But they are soulful and stirring. As a listener they Pull You In, not Bow You Away.
    To me all the back and forth about who is a greater guitar player is downright silly. Enjoy each player for who they are and what they bring to the table. Most musicians aren't into Keeping Score and trying to figure out if they're better or not as good as the next guy earning his bread as a fellow musician.
    They're secure in their own musicianship, and rejoice when they hear someone who plays and sings in a way that they really enjoy, even if that person is much more talented than they are.
    Kind of like pro basketball. Dr. J was so good, the guys on the other team's bench were high-fiving and digging his game, not chewing their fingernails with envy.
    Genius deserves respect, and I certainly render it to Prince - truly one of the outstanding all-around musicians of our time. And a pretty doggone good guitar player into the bargain!

    FACT: The Story is, Joel Gallen the producer of the show, thought it was a good idea to have Prince do the Guitar solo for My Guitar Gently Weeps to honor the late George Harrison who was inducted in the RRHOF. Olivia Harrison [George’s widow] asked Jeff and Tom if they would come along and induct George. They were told Prince is going to play too,” and they were like, “Wow, that’s fantastic.” Prince was inducted the same night, so everything worked out great. Tom Petty even said to Prince “Just cut loose and don’t feel sort of inhibited to copy anything that we have, just play your thing, just have a good time.” The vocals and Guitar solo were outstanding. Masterpiece!

Like I said Prince's extended solo is much more emotional than Eric's (or the guy that played it note for note). I really felt it's what the song deserved. Records had to be shorter back then: I'm not blaming Eric. Prince set the bar so high, I doubt it will ever be eclipsed. Steven Pettinga. Indy

At the rehearsal, Prince didn't get to practice the solo because the other guy stepped up and played both of them.
