Superdelphinus idk bout that, it may be called while my guitar gently weeps, but when you hear Clapton lead guitar through the song it sounds like a caged lion thats finally let out during the middle and end solo. Eight years later, still watching this. It never gets old. I love watching Prince and Tom exchange smiles during the solo. They both know this is totally kicking ass. Then, at the end, Prince takes his guitar and throws it, then pimp walks off the stage. This is easily the best all star jam from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame shows.
I'm going to call bullshit on that. Who gives Prince a guitar solo at the R&R Hall Of Fame and thinks, "I'm sure Prince will rein this in and make it short and respectable"? Do you have a link?
@@paulywalnuts5008 Here is an interesting article highlighting a couple of those on stage... www.nytimes.com/2016/04/28/arts/music/prince-guitar-rock-hall-of-fame.html

I love prince's music, but I can see what George's son might have thought. The throwing of the guitar up in the air at the end was a bit elitist, if that's the appropriate word, and was kinda like Prince saying "Ok I'm the big star. Now I'm gonna walk off because my work is done here". He is a superstar obviously, but there are one or two other guys on stage that are pretty OK too. BTW, where did the guitar go? Didn't see it come down! (unless it bounced off Dhani's head and that's why he was annoyed).

I've loved Prince b4 his full abilities were known. The day he died, I woke up after life changing surgery from Cancer Tumors, my surgery only performed 6×'s in USA. I looked out my windows & the Walking Bridge at OHSU in zptld Or. Was lit up Purple, my fav Color. I took it as a sign I'd someday walk. A good friend called & said I don't know how 2 say this, so I'll just say it quick, Prince died. I cried like a baby. My 1st true love of an iconic wonder. Amazing Talent far beyond most. He could play any instrument he touched
For me, this tribute has turned into one of the greatest live performances of all time. With Tom Petty's pitch-perfect vocals and Prince's guitar virtuosity, we are reminded of three of the greatest musicians of all time.
Prince received very little recognition during his lifetime for his extraordinary guitar talent but this one video leaves no doubt that he belongs to a very small group. A virtuoso’s virtuoso.
@@scotta2769 Because he was late. You know how Stars act. Still, everyone would have to admit it was a knockout performance. If it was a statement, Prince was just being Prince.

my stepdad was a stage hand for this. he said everyone was so still and quiet, watching and taking it in. theyve all witnessed history. best thing he’s ever seen
😥 how beautiful. Happy for him, that he was blessed with that experience. That must have been incredible. I miss Prince every day I was fortunate to have grown up with his music, and to see him live a few times, but I miss him.... Every. Single. Day. Prince fam.🎶💜
@@HitmanJake2113 It’s in a case at Paisley Park! 😉. His guitar tech or one of the crew was by the stage and caught it. He’d frequently throw his guitar and someone would be there to catch it. But it did work perfect on this view because it does seem to disappear.
Actually, other real musicians in the industry were well aware of his guitar skills. I recall reading multiple interviews with the best of them. They would reference Prince as one of the best, Clapton was one to have acknowledged that years ago. So did others.
Well said. I was kind of thinking the same thing. I really was not so cognizant of how damn talented he was on guitar. Really amazing talent. Prince could have probably played guitar in any band ever and stood out. He ripped it in this video. Really great to see.
He was an undisputed genius. However, his music got very samey and bland after Diamonds And Pearls and his songs were usually about the same thing - how sexy and funky he was. His best songs were written for other people. He peaked for me when he did Sign O The Times. He should have done more political songs. He would have got even more kudos.
They did it together, listen to Jeff Lynne, he is singing like it is so easy. One hell of performance from all of them, and not to forget George Harrison, one of the greatest song there is!!!
Agreed a hundred-fold, not only did George respect Prince's playing he said he was the best. So to have a Dad fave play his part in this incredible song and have Prince go God mode on it must've been gospel to young Harrison.
Also Tom Petty who's struggling to keep a straight face when Prince is propped up from the crowd in front of him and is laying down some crazy stuff :) Petty's also urging him on soon after, so much for the much-discussed battle of egos ...

Prince was never that selfish. Prince was trying to put a smile on Dann's face and let the young man know that George wanted nothing more than to make people happy through his music. Bonus points to Prince for making Tom Petty crack a smile. The best part of this video is when Danni smiles after Prince cracks Tom up. It hurts me to no end that Tom and Prince are gone. @@petergreen5337 I came here to post almost exactly what you said. 🙂 Easily one of the best performances on youtube. Blows my mind every time I watch it.
Kimberlee Ponson Pink Floyd was like this too, the live performances were much longer because of the guitar solos, or even keyboards or everything combined, truly shows how great artists are when they can extend their music live.
yes, and in a studio, Prince can do a Pink Floyd favorite by HIMSELF. That is praising Floyd, as their music live was so magical. This video when it came out shocked a lot of casual fans, but I always knew he could play like this, and better - if you listen to most of his work, he is a very emotional player with masterful sense of vibrato and bends, and this song was made for him to hit out of the park. Clapton is a huge fan, and he must have LOVED it. PRINCE IS AN ALL TIME GREAT. BUt none of the all time greats has mastered all the instruments and can play as many styles as Prince, plus sing and dance? No one comes close.
An understatement :) whoever thought of asking Prince to do this needs a medal on so many levels, its a lovely nod to George (both were creative and experimental songwriters), a nod to Eric's original solo which was in itself a 'step out' for the Beatles, it brings attention to this great song once again, it shows Prince as a more consummat artiste alongside respected contemporaries and as an individual guitar player... I could go on but you get the idea. 35 million views cannot be wrong.
Prince's magnificent shredding will never ever get old -- I play it every so often. All hail, PRINCE! (At George Harrison's posthumous induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York on March 15, 2004.)

@Gamon Man That's super interesting. I could see the producers doing that, and then Petty spoke to Prince privately and was like "Do your thing man, show em what you got!" I don't believe this story if you're telling me the other musicians tried to push him aside, but I would believe it if the Producers of the program did. Prince was notoriously hard to work with on the business side of things, but other musicians adored him! unless I'm backwards there.

@Gamon Man I just listened to a Tom Petty interview yesterday with a member of the Bangels. Tom SAID: "it was my idea to have Prince come out at the end and just wail. Prince even laughed at the word wail. I thought it would not be that cool to have Prince just standing up there until his solo.". Prince even looks at Tom at one point to say, "should i keep going", and Tom basically said, "fuck yes".

I don't think I've ever appreciated Prince more. His guitar didn't gently weep; it stood up and demanded respect.
"His guitar didnt gently weep, it stood up and demanded respect!" That was such a bad ass comment Melissa!! I love it! haha
That’s why I don’t think it really fits with the song. It’s not called while my guitar violently shreds...
Superdelphinus idk bout that, it may be called while my guitar gently weeps, but when you hear Clapton lead guitar through the song it sounds like a caged lion thats finally let out during the middle and end solo. Prince simply added his lil twist to it, he still made that guitar cry plenty of time throughout his solo.

Hes not dead! C'mon....
How hates him?
Prince was never a 'hate him or like him' type. He was either liked or people were indifferent to his music.
How was he a LOSS to music? He was a GAIN to music!
Prince stole the show without treading on anyone's toes. Masterful performance.
Given Petty's expression i think he did...
Robert Parums Because he let his guitar steal the show, and that's what Georges song is all about.... :-D
Prince made it impossible to tread on anyone's toes by banning flip flops from the performance.
They did it together, listen to Jeff Lynne, he is singing like it is so easy. One hell of performance from all of them, and not to forget George Harrison, one of the greatest song there is!!!
SO LUCKY that guy was there to catch him at 4:47....!
The look of joy on Dani Harrison’s face during prince’s solo is so heartwarming
Agreed a hundred-fold, not only did George respect Prince's playing he said he was the best. So to have a Dad fave play his part in this incredible song and have Prince go God mode on it must've been gospel to young Harrison.
Also Tom Petty who's struggling to keep a straight face when Prince is propped up from the crowd in front of him and is laying down some crazy stuff :) Petty's also urging him on soon after, so much for the much-discussed battle of egos ...

Prince was a musician beyond description. I am not much of a fan of a lot of his music, yet he outshines everyone on the stage. What a legend. We lost him too soon.
@@xmillion1704 I'm still wondering who that was. He was on the Concert For George, telegraphing chords to Dhani too.
The moments Prince takes to smile and make eye contact with Tom and Dhani during his blistering solo are the same genuine expressions of pure joy and friendship we see in children

Very well stated ! You are spot on.
We lost a musical genius for sure.. he definitely took some things from jimi Hendrix who was genius himself. Never to be forgotten
This is the REAL Prince. Childlike, but brilliant. The Kid to the end.
I noticed the exact same thing.
