Just in case those unfamiliar with Led Zeppelin are unaware, their Drummer sadly passed away some time ago, his son is playing the drums here. His signature hat was a bowler hat, thus the bowler hats in the choir. Very very classy tribute.
Jason Bonham, son of the late John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham, shares a fateful coincidence with another son of another drummer. Ringo Starr's eldest Zak had been recruited by Oasis to be their concert drummer before Liam and Noel had their full-blown split. Zak played with Oasis and was also present with other sons of the Beatles when they eventually did a benefit concert covering their fathers' music. Jason Bonham eventually joined Oasis at some point when Zak had left or I could be confusing my timelines as to who joined Oasis first. Both sons of drummers became truly skilled drummers themselves.
If I remember correctly, Jason later told Howard Stern that his presence was a surprise to the band, hence the shocked and excited reaction when they saw him!!
Agree completely. It's amazing watching Jimmy and JP rocking along, while Robert watches and analyzes. I always wonder what was going through Robert's mind as the back up vocals and choir joined in. A haunting addition akin to his STH montage in the movie. And lastly, that sustained final chord carried by all, was spine tingling. Not many ways to finish off one of the best songs ever recorded, but that was one of them.
Imagine the pressure of playing Led Zeppelin in front of Led Zeppelin, and then being such consummate professionals you pull THIS off. Heart are truly greats in their field.
Ok, I agree with part of your statement. But why did they leave part of the song out? Why did they need a massive choir to fill in? Because they can't pull the weight of what zeppelin could do even on a night they felt "off". And having them there doesn't change the fact that they needed to fit into time restraints and live up to media expectations. That's why bands like led zeppelin didn't get signed to contracts in the beginning. Because they were a round peg trying to fit into a square hole. Their songs were to long to fit onto album ("vinyl") sides. Where is that rebellious side of rock and roll anymore? It's not alive in the older guys anymore. I want that back, where is that now? Where is that fire? I seriously hope some newer generations find it, or we'll all be generations lost in space.......

I think beyond even that is the moment you can literally SEE in Robert Plant's face " okay .... THAT'S what it's like to have heard it when WE did it " . He was on the edge of his seat as she went into the " to be a rock and not to roll " line and it brought him to tears.

Ann has been moving me with her voice for 46 years. This gives me chills and so much emotion for so many reasons. I’ll keep watching this till I leave this earth.
This was my wife’s favourite song. When she withdrew into her own mind due to brain cancer, I played it every night for her, to see if I could get any response from her. She passed away a year ago, and I accidentally came across this performance. I can’t stop tearing up.
I am very sorry for your loss. My sister was diagnosed with brain cancer in Dec. and she passed a few days later on Dec 19th 2022. She grew up in the 70's and loved Led Zeppelin... Life is not the same without her.

Yes, it was because of Jason. The only drummer who could play "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin correctly was the original drummer, Jon Bonham, who was Jason's father. This song requires control, finesse, and complex drum arrangements. Phil Collins attempted to play it during the Live Aid concert in 1985 to help the band get back on tour, but his performance failed terribly, resulting in the band never playing again. Therefore, for Jon Bonham's son to perform flawlessly in front of the band was an incredible sight to see. It was a true tribute to his father in many ways. Rest in peace, Jon Bonham.

I think this is actually better than theirs. They have a full orchestra behind them. Zep are better with their instruments (Nancy is excellent, but... Jimmy Page? Who is better than him? There are contenders, but the only guy I definitely put ahead is dead 50+ years) but Ann's voice is better than any of the boys.

Lot of tragedy happened to Plant while in the later stages of the band. He's great about his time in the band, but it was over before he was 30, and I'm sure it's not an easy place to revisit, nor living with the legend he created, which was largely out of his control at the time also, as well as into eternity.

This version is better than many I’ve seen, including by Zeppelin themselves. Very powerful, with orchestra and choir. It’s elevated way beyond “rock song” to the land of Musical Masterpiece.
I think Anne Wilson is the only one who could have done this song without it being less then the original. The queen of rock crushed it. And Nacy is an amazing guitarist as well, she made it sound flawless.

This was my dad's favourite song, he would always listen to it, every morning he played it. Naively I knew this would be his funeral song one day, in a long time I hoped. After a 5 year battle with cancer, last month, as i've always imagined, we played it during his funeral. This tribute song will always hold the biggest place in my heart as I will always feel his presence when listening to it. I love you dad, can't wait to listen to it together one day.

I'm sixty years old now, I've heard "Stairway To Heaven" covered by many, many bands. I thought none could ever capture the essence of the song or the band, but I was wrong. Hearing Heart perform this, watching Jason play, Robert's tears, and watching Jimmy and John react to this? I'm shedding a few tears myself. This is absolute magic.
Not just the greatest rock n roll band of all time, but also humble. If you watch the entire show you can tell how much they enjoy the musicians performing their work. No judgement on their part just pure appreciation for each groups rendition of their music.
Why does this rendition of the song bring a 63 year old grown man to tears. Perhaps it's the greatest song ever written, and to see it being performed in such a magnificent way and watch the originators enjoy it so.
It's that choir. Phenomenal. And their reactions at the end when the large choir comes out is great, they were like little kids. It was so cool to watch.

It gives me goosebumps and lump in my throat every time. I saw Heart about 15 years ago and they played a Led Zeppelin cover. My favorite is their cover of The Battle of Ev’more under the band The Love Mongers.

Watching Jimmy Page's reaction to the guitar solo is poignant. This is one of the most legendary rock songs in history. Page's solo in it is one of the most recognizable guitar solos in all of rock and roll. To nail it as part of a cover with the original guitarist watching you and you bring him to tears over it? Jeez, I can't imagine how high up on Cloud Nine that guitarist was feeling.
Ann Wilson said he was because of Jason. He was so happy to see him playing the drums. He has fond memories of Jason as child running around while they rehearsed.
There was a dinner afterward where Jimmy Page told Nancy Wilson that they don't like hearing stairway covers, but went on to praise theirs. I can't imagine the honor they felt in that moment

Imagine being young. Full of live. Becoming one of the largest and most influential bands ever, growing old, losing your band mates, then to hear your lifes work being just completely honored by these people. Truly amazing.
You took the words right out of my mouth! They all did Led Zeppelin proud. Jason was filled with emotion at the end as well, looking up as if to say, "Dad, this is for you!" Incredible performance and tribute to the best band ever.
No one else could have sung this song with such emotion. I had chills and tears hearing it. Bittersweet memories of youth and possibilities. Love this. Grateful that I grew up with this generation of music. I listen to this version every once in a while it nourishes the soul.
These are two experiences that must be completely surreal; watching such a powerful performance of your song in your honour, and moving Led Zeppelin to tears by performing their own song for them.

I couldn't imagine the impact that having legends like Led Zeppelin give you a standing ovation for performing their song for them. For veterans like Ann and Nancy Wilson it is a tribute to their abilities and dedication to the craft, to Jason Bonham it is a tribute to his father, and to the backup band and singers, it is certainly a highlight, if not the peak of their careers. A fantastic performance by all.
The moment of Robert trying not to burst into tears is what every person needs of that age when they reminisce their past achievements knowing full well what they have created will be appreciated forever.

Love hearing the story that Robert Plant had invited Jason Bonham,on drums to this but he refused saying he had a gig he couldn't get out of. You see both pointing at each other early in the video and a huge smile on Plant's face when he realizes that Jason will be on drums playing in memory of his father

Actually, I think that Ann, as powerful as she tried to portray, was no where near the power of this song. It is the song itself, and the backup singers in the hats. She was.....OK in it. There were 1,000 singers who could do it. Not trying to take away from her effort....but she did not MAKE this song.

November 2024 -- who knows how many times watched?-- Needed an ugly cry over something indescribably beautiful, and here it is.
In my opinion, this is without a shadow of a doubt the greatest tribute I've ever seen to a band, very moving.

The choir hit all three of the original. You could see how they pepped up even more than they were.

This was my wife’s favourite song. When she withdrew into her own mind due to brain cancer, I played it every night for her, to see if I could get any response from her. She passed away a year ago, and I accidentally came across this performance. I can’t stop tearing up.
I am very sorry for your loss. My sister was diagnosed with brain cancer in Dec. and she passed a few days later on Dec 19th 2022. She grew up in the 70's and loved Led Zeppelin... Life is not the same without her.

Yes, it was because of Jason. The only drummer who could play "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin correctly was the original drummer, Jon Bonham, who was Jason's father. This song requires control, finesse, and complex drum arrangements. Phil Collins attempted to play it during the Live Aid concert in 1985 to help the band get back on tour, but his performance failed terribly, resulting in the band never playing again. Therefore, for Jon Bonham's son to perform flawlessly in front of the band was an incredible sight to see. It was a true tribute to his father in many ways. Rest in peace, Jon Bonham.

I think this is actually better than theirs. They have a full orchestra behind them. Zep are better with their instruments (Nancy is excellent, but... Jimmy Page? Who is better than him? There are contenders, but the only guy I definitely put ahead is dead 50+ years) but Ann's voice is better than any of the boys.

The same thought crossed my mind - or at least he didn't fully appreciate it until this performance.
Lot of tragedy happened to Plant while in the later stages of the band. He's great about his time in the band, but it was over before he was 30, and I'm sure it's not an easy place to revisit, nor living with the legend he created, which was largely out of his control at the time also, as well as into eternity.
That guitarist had to play one of the most legendary guitar solos in history directly to the man who wrote it. No pressure god damn

This was my dad's favourite song, he would always listen to it, every morning he played it. Naively I knew this would be his funeral song one day, in a long time I hoped. After a 5 year battle with cancer, last month, as i've always imagined, we played it during his funeral. This tribute song will always hold the biggest place in my heart as I will always feel his presence when listening to it. I love you dad, can't wait to listen to it together one day.

I'm sixty years old now, I've heard "Stairway To Heaven" covered by many, many bands. I thought none could ever capture the essence of the song or the band, but I was wrong. Hearing Heart perform this, watching Jason play, Robert's tears, and watching Jimmy and John react to this? I'm shedding a few tears myself.

Why does this rendition of the song bring a 63 year old grown man to tears. Perhaps it's the greatest song ever written, and to see it being performed in such a magnificent way and watch the originators enjoy it so.

Page's solo in it is one of the most recognizable guitar solos in all of rock and roll. To nail it as part of a cover with the original guitarist watching you and you bring him to tears over it? There was a dinner afterward where Jimmy Page told Nancy Wilson that they don't like hearing stairway covers, but went on to praise theirs. I can't imagine the honor they felt in that moment

Love hearing the story that Robert Plant had invited Jason Bonham,on drums to this but he refused saying he had a gig he couldn't get out of. You see both pointing at each other early in the video and a huge smile on Plant's face when he realizes that Jason will be on drums playing in memory of his father

Actually, I think that Ann, as powerful as she tried to portray, was no where near the power of this song. It is the song itself, and the backup singers in the hats. She was.....OK in it. There were 1,000 singers who could do it. Not trying to take away from her effort....but she did not MAKE this song.

Robert Plant showed his emotion a great human being, I can only imagine the pain and hurt he went through with the death of his beloved son and the loss of his dear friend I feel his pain in those memories

My god what a moment. Plant finally coming to terms with arguably the band’s best song, a song he always downplayed and outright refused to play with any zeppelin reunions. Jason bringing the hammer of the gods down for his father. The Wilson sisters just absolutely killing it. Astounding.
I think they played Stairway at all the Zeppelin reunion concerts (Live Aid, O2, Atlantic 40th, etc.) just not in the Page & Plant tour.
