Hey everyone! I'll be doing an update on this video soon when the new Doctor Who theme will be released. (and I'm not even sure that there will be a new theme). I'll also add the Doctor Who at The Proms Middle 8's and Doctor of War: Genesis Middle 8 by Howard Carter. If you want me to add another Middle 8, just ask me in the comments below.
Edit: I'll wait for Ncuti's first season to air, so that I can see if there will be a new theme. If not, I'll still add The Proms and Doctor Of War middle 8's. If you have any other middle 8's you want me to add, just leave a comment :)
The Lonely Assassin has a version of the MIddle 8, that could be cool to include
@@ebb2040 Thanks for your comment! I'll make sure to include it.
I think this is the new theme going forward. Thanks for including Gold/Capaldi version of the middle 8, that was awesome.
Updated video out now! → ruclips.net/video/ewpsznNDFwg/видео.html
I like how it starts as a mysterious, alien tone then slowly over the years becomes this superhero like theme
LOVE the 80s one my favorite version
The Doctor isn't a superhero though. Imo it was better when was a simple Time Lord drop out who knew nowt about what he was doing
@@DS9TREK isn't he. A wise man once said. "meddling when you don't need to is the essence of being a hero" fits The Doctor quite nicely if I do say so myself
@@DS9TREKHe saves the world with a fake name and superpowers. He's the textbook definition of a fucking Super hero
And also that regular time or shit is the most famfiction nonsense ever The doctor was written as a pioneer amongst his own people since before they literally invented the time lords
And also even if he was just another time lord that's still Being a literal god of time
I prefer the alien sounds rather than superhero.
The middle 8 to me is a really important part of the theme. The main part of the theme (the "oo-wee-oo" bit) evokes the mysterious side of the Doctor, but the middle 8 evokes their heroism.
Same
or whimsy, or sense of adventure
I agree, from the 1980 theme the "heroic" middle eight becomes more evident, and it culminated for me in the 2005 theme.
Always used to hit hard after a 2 parter
I love the middle 8 so much. It just hits my brain in the right way. So majestic. So heroic.
I love that the War Doctor got a proper theme time. Even if his other incarnations hate him, he's still the Doctor
I love the middle 8. It's why the McCoy theme is my favourite for including it in the opening.
The McCoy theme is fantastic.
The evolution of the middle eight from 2005 to 2008 is wonderful. It gets grander and more emphatic, mirroring how the show become more and more succesful, until the 2008 one is punch-the-air triumphant, the show at it's peak.
I noticed how people hate the 2013 theme, but I actually kinda love it. So nostalgic
I thought they hated The visual effect of the intro because it's mostly just stock images
Including a wolf drinking tea
Tbh the middle 8 has always been my favourite part of the theme.
It gives the show a sense of victory triumph, and inspires us with hope. Xx
I love how Capaldi was so invested in the Middle 8 that he played it himself in a video. Just going, "I know it's not in my theme, so here you go. Stick this in wherever you need it."
I love that they placed the middle eight in McCoy’s opening rather than at the ending. It made his intro theme more unique
@@alivebacontgm2
McCoy's the Seventh.
I love how the akinola theme is so mysterious and the live theme is so bombastic, such a cool video!
Akinola’s theme is my fav
They should put it at the beginning again sometime
Already done
Yes! Also, I’m so glad they stopped putting the next time on Doctor Who During it.
@@keknik1337 that's what I mean by again
YES! It’s been 27 years since McGann’s intro. The opening titles are so short there’s never space for it. Time to let it take centre stage again.
No. They shouldn’t.
I loved how the TV Movie inverts the order and starts with the middle 8, then moves to the classic theme. It's neat that it managed to make it seem fresh with that little swap.
Thanks for putting this together. I love the middle 8 so much. Imho, nobody does it like Murray Gold. But it’s so wonderful to hear the variations over 6 decades in 5 minutes. Epic.
The more triumphant the middle 8 sounds the more pumped I get.
i like how in the sylvester mccoy era this was actually integrated into the opening titles, rather than just being in the credits.
I like that too, because that's the whole problem with the Middle 8. It's always played in the end credits, which a lot of people just don't watch. I didn't even know that this part of the theme even existed untill I stuck around for the credits of The Day of The Doctor :)
@@Jacx_DoctorWhoSneaks into some of the second doctor's intros
@@camioso yup that's true
Indeed! It's quite an underrated part of the theme.
@@Jacx_DoctorWhoi only knew it was a part of the theme when i listened to one of the themes either on spotify or youtube, i didn't even find out from the show itself😭 like how dare they hide the best part of the theme in the ending??
Murray Gold and Peter Howell. Best to ever do it
Love, love, love Capaldi’s middle 8. It’s so good. It’s gotta be that or the Live Performance #1 for me :)
The best was Peter Howell's for the end of Tom's and the start of Peter's seasons.
Love the movies theme, the orchestral version just sends shivers down my spine!
I love them all in their own way but 2008 has to be my personal favourite, along with 2014 and the new version I think.
I LOVE the Middle 8. It adds so much dept to the theme. It's just... BRILLIANT
Dominic Glynn’s the best middle 8
Loved the early 80s version. It hits a spot in my brain. I dont know how else to say it. 0:48
i didn't know it was called the middle 8 but it's my favourite part of the theme, i don't know why but even the first time i heard it it made me feel something special... fuck i'm writing this comment not even halfway through the video and i teared up i don't know enough about music to say why this part has such a strong effect on me but it makes me emotional for some reason-
Thank you for putting this together! So nice to listen to, love seeing how it evolved over the years!
Thank you so much for including the Big Finish ones!
No problem! I've also made an update, whith even more middle 8's from Live TV to Video Games (and even more Big Finish!)
ruclips.net/video/ewpsznNDFwg/видео.html
McCoy and McGann the golden age where the middle 8 took its rightful spot front and center in the theme.
2008 is my
Delia Derbyshire's original is still the best.
You gotta say the tennant era middle eight gotta be the best
Edit: is it just me or is it when they're all together they sound like a full theme tune
Well done. Love this so much.
Every single one sounds like bloody Band Aid and i cant unhear it.
The 2023 middle 8's back is breaking from carrying the rest of the theme
Gotta love Howard Carter's.
I absolutely love smiths middle 8. its my favourite by far
The Middle 8 always screams out heroic for me.
The middle eight is by far my favorite part of the theme. :D
This very much feels like a video targeted at me and I love it!
The Middle 8 shows what a Hero The Doctor is
I love this part the best.
My favourite part of the theme
Loved that McGann's movie theme opened with it. It really worked!
So people, the timestamps dissapeared for some reason, so you can find them in the description if it helps :)
thnx!
I'm sorry, did I slip into a universe where doctor who was still on the air between 1990-2005?
No, no. There were audio some stories released in that period. In 2015 there were some audio stories with the 7th and War Doctors, so i figured I'd put the themes in doctor who's timeline order. But i get it, it's confusing :)
@Jacx_DoctorWho oh okay haha they're a cool addition though, makes sense what you've done with them now I know
@@Jacx_DoctorWhoDidn’t Scream of the Shalka have a middle 8, I’m sure I’ve heard the long theme with it in somewhere?
@@Warbler-Productions yeah I'll add that one too if you like
After utopia and sound of drums the middle 8 hit so hard in the last of the time lords
Delia Derbyshire and Peter Howell by far the best. Keff's rearrangement was great even if the instruments were too much of their time (80s synth)
The 2018 theme is my fav just those drums I love them
Big finish 7th theme is great
My favourite era of the middle 8 was the Howell/Glynn era i.e. 1980-1987 although in the modern era it has to be for Season 5 (Smith's first season) by Murray Gold.
Really awesome thanks but it reallyu does show you need that middle 8, it just does not work without it
The original is by far still the best.

I thought it was a maze
McCoy era deffo the best remake, followed by the Davidson era one.
I've been a fan of the series for 8 years now and I just discovered that my favorite part of the main theme has an actual name lol
2011 one is by far the best
08 ❤
I think you missed one. The Tom Baker years had one that played at the end of a series roughly 1977-1979. That's actually where I first heard it.
Isn't it just the same as the Troughton and Pertwee one?
Having the middle 8 at the atart of the title sequence would of suited the current titles.
I wonder how BBC can create a futuristic, mysterious & heroic theme music for a science fiction drama in the 60s?
Delia Derbyshire was a boss basically.
Now 10 hours please
Ten hour loop of middle 8's, coming soon :)
What version and who did the 2nd McCoy theme? 1st time I've heard it ok 3 & 4th Mcgann themes i know there big finish versions.
Howard Carter for the Novel Adaptations, namely Damaged Goods.
Big Finish Audio Novels "New Adventures"
7ths big finish middle 8 is so beautiful to listen to
Peter Howell's is best ❤
There's one missing, Village of the Angles had a different one.
Woops 😅
Actually I don't think there was a middle 8 in that one...@@Jacx_DoctorWho
No! Not the Delaware!
AAAA
This would be fantastic on bagpipes.
What are all the version in between 7 and 9? I only know the TV movie one.
Edit: oh it's in the description lol
I think the 2005 - 2007 one was best
The original middle 8 to me is a headache-inducing ice cream van jingle
1963 was perfect, thanks to Delia Derbyshire. Later versions were derivative, and the most recent are just musical wallpaper. And the BBC employs a whole orchestra for that drivel.
1963 for me, then 1981.
unpopular opinion: the 2010 middle 8 is the best
More unpopular opinion:
The Delaware theme middle 8 is the best.
@@polybius223 fair enough that one is really good
It's weird
It feels like 2005-2010 had more impact, more strenght and love
Again, in 2016-2017 it came back, but faded again untill this year
It almost feels like if the directors were trying to send a message: 2005-2010, 2016-2017 and 2023: "Hey, we believe on this show!"
2012-2015, 2018 "We have hopes, y'know? C'mon see it!"
2019-2022: "Please just watch it. I know it hurts, but, please."
Why is it called a middle 8?
Can’t stand the orchestral version
Sorry, always hated the middle 8. Because it was not really in the programme on tv, only on albums of tv themes. So like the album version of a song that becomes a hit only after it's been edited for radio, it's that familiar radio edit we fell for and therefore recognise instantly as the real thing - not that other rarely heard and frankly "wrong" sounding album cut. Same with Doctor Who's drippy middle 8.
Yes, we can hear the unloved 8 in the extended intro sequence to An Unearthly Child, but unless you were there on that fateful November night in 1963 and had perfect recall for a tune after hearing it only once, then you probably never heard it again until decades later when the DVD came out, since throughout the rest of Hartnell's era and all of Troughton's, the muffled 8 thankfully barely gets further than it's first weak and whiney dirge of a note before quickly and rightly being faded out of the mix so the episode-proper can begin.
My Doctors, Pertwee and Baker, they dispensed with the hateful 8 altogether, with a much more succinct and dramatic edit of the classic theme. And all the better for it. Same thereafter with whatever those various ugly new versions were supposed to be for the subsequent Doctors, the one thing those crappy keyboards got right was to do away with the middling 8 for good.
Here's where you tell me the offensive 8 was, I think you'll find, played in full as part of the end credits outro, actually... To which I say, wow, only you and tone deaf name checker Toby Hadoke stuck around for the credits, you weirdo, so who cares. Now get your hands off my Geoff Love And His Orchestra - Star Wars And Other Space Themes record, and don't darken my Tardis doorstep with your fliddy 8 again;)
now thats a bunch of lies, the middle 8 was litrally in the 7th doctor intro.
@@user-ez4ie5hy3q Sylvester was my Jodie Whittaker. Who knows what the silver faced spoon clacker got up to
I presume this is a reference to the Knackers Yard, er Valeyard?
wat
Uh, it was played in full over almost *every one* of the closing credits in the '60s (I would dare say all of them, actually, although I'm not trawling through every episode to see if one missed it - even "An Unearthly Child", with only the four leads and a handful of production personnel in the credits, plays it in full.), and a good number of the closing credits in the Pertwee years. It was only the Baker years that it was rare to hear it in the closing credits (usually the final episodes of 6-parters). So, viewers would have plenty of chances to hear it, back in those days when closing credits were played in full (and with channel loyalty pretty high in the UK at the time, they were keeping the TV on and not switching channels to miss it).
McCrap era middle 8 is still crap
