Doctor Who belongs to BBC.
For those who don't know, the middle 8 is the sequence in the theme song where the key changes and wow its such a good part! Here is a full video for you to enjoy, from 1963 to 2023.

Murray Golds versions from 03:01 - 03:39 sound like a super heroes theme and I love it. This is when I started watching Doctor Who.

I'm only now getting to know this part of the theme is called the Middle 8, I read music, I should have known. This is my favourite part of the theme, I get goosebumps every time I hear it. For many seasons it seems it was cut or faded out to save time, this part should never be cut. I love it. ❤

I’m just gonna say it. Edge of Time at 6:41 is one of my new favorite themes, just in general. And the Middle Eight is no small part of why.

i was never really fan of that era, among others, but the theme was outstanding in my opinion, I love music with drums like that, not fast annoying drums, BIG HARD LOUD NICE drumming, it just adds a nice steady beat! really immersive!

7 had a very underrated theme, very much my era of childhood. Somehow darker and more alien than anything that came before.
In the classic seeies, the middle eight was only ever played in the final episode of a sereal. As a kid, i always thought it was to symbolise the Doctor's victory.

I didn't think Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker (pre 1980), Christopher Eccleston or Matt Smith ever had a Middle 8 while the 2005 one didn't get one until the feature length Christmas special.
No, they were mostly just included in the full version of the theme

There's now a 2024 proms theme that HAS to be included
The theme always feels kind of incomplete without the middle 8. The rest of theme captures the dark mysterious side of the franchise, while the Middle captures the fun whimsical side of it.
Ngl i think the 2024 theme is the best weve ever gotten tbh, its just screams doctor who and its 60+ years of history

I’ve just started to watch new who and was wondering when they started incorporating the middle 8, three episodes in. Nothing yet.
Peter Howell’s 5th Doctor version is my favourite.
The Middle 8 doesn't appear until Series 1's Christmas Specials: The Christmas Invasion. It appears in the end credits.

Interesting question actually. You have the "Opening Theme" variations of most of these, but these are merely just 40 seconds long. The Series 1 Closing theme does not contain a Middle 8, nor does the Nicholas Briggs Big Finish theme. There are also variants of the Series 11 closing theme that don't have a middle 8 either.

Troughton, Pertwee and Baker had the same theme. It was used from 1966 to 1979. (Yes, I used a stereo remix variant, so it may sound a little off)

Doesn't have a theme. The only games that have one are The Edge of Time and The Lonely Assassins.
EDIT: Sorry, the Edge of Reality actually has the same theme as the Lonely Assassins.

The central problem with Murray Gold's themes, while some of them have been good, is that he fundamentally lacks the understanding that the Doctor Who theme is meant to be electronic, not orchestral. The only person to fully understand what the theme should be was Delia Derbyshire. Since she has passed, the next best person to understand her realisation of the theme is Mark Ayers. Please please please let him have a chance to arrange an electric version of the theme that brings it back to its roots and gets used in the broadcast. For all his contributions to the program throughout the decades, Mark deserves to have a proper chance at the official theme.
