- This video demonstrates a potential issue to be aware of with using hybrid mode for city travel in the Wrangler 4XE. Keep in mind, this is a speculative video based on personal experience and the experiences of many other Wrangler 4XE owners. The information in this video is difficult to verify without advanced diagnostics equipment.

In my case, two details ring true.
1. If the engine starts once while I'm in hybrid mode, it starts more easily subsequently.
2. If I'm coming to a stop and then the situation changes and I don't need to actually stop (ie. The light was red, but turned green just before I reached a stop), the engine kicks on very easily as I pull my foot off the brake and on to the accelerator.
Thanks for sharing. You always present great information in an easily digestible way without dumbing it down. Also, that flashlight could really mess you up in a crash being right there.

Your final comments are what I do. Electric mode running day to day errands (I have a Level 2 so I can keep topping off).
Then I have an 80 mile round trip drive I do once a week. I always do the first 60 of that in Esave so the engine gets/stays warm, then I finish the last 20 miles electric.

I find that e-save also produces short engine runs so the only way to keep engine running until it reaches working temperature is to shift to manual gear while waiting for traffic lights and when going downhill.
If you put it in eSave + Charge, it will keep the engine running. When it's in eSave + Hold, it still let's the engine shut off.
Good video. I have been FORM free since April. To me the FORM I think was cause because of the cold and not able to clear it because can't get the engine hot enough. In the winter I don't necessarily stop and go, but I did remote start my engine every morning. By time I start my car and arrive to work, my engine was running for at least 20-30 min. My driving habbit no change, between winter and summer. I do drive short distance to go to work.
Is your 4XE still in FORM?
Yup, normal in winter climate.
I've also been curious how and why the engine indicates getting up to operating temp so ridiculously fast. In just a few minutes, even in chilly weather, I see that gauge hit the middle; something you rarely see within 10 minutes of a typical engine warming up.

The flashlight holder is from Fishbone Off Road. I’ve debated removing it. I hit my head on it a few weeks ago and thought about how bad that could be in an accident. There’s one that mounts it down next to the seat that I’m looking at.
Great video. I have a question. My 4XE 2023 from time to time will not let me fill it with gas. I open the door - when fueling, I'm putting in a 1/4 gallon at a time and then having to hold the pump handle down again, and again, and again. Takes forever to fill it with gas. Someone I believe said hit the fuel door open button - open it - close it and hit the button again because pressure needs to be bleeded out? Not sure if anyone else has had this issue.
Push the fuel door release button an extra time or two. That button does more than just open the door. It triggers a timed process that opens the pressurized fuel tank on the 4XE. Sometimes, the timed process isn’t long enough to get that little “valve” on the tank opened all the way.

I've had my 4xe 5 months, have 5,300 miles, nearly all in hybrid mode. I have a bit of a lead foot around town so the 4xe has frequent short engine runs. I took a 600 mile trip right after getting the 4xe, and a 700 mile trip about a month ago. I live in a moderate year-round climate and have no issues or FORM. My Uconnect app shows 50% oil life remaining. The 4xe is garaged and charged with a level 1 charger.

I have a brand new Rubicon , had it two weeks and then the snow storm hit , it was really cold out and I turned on the heater and then the motor came on and gave the message about the heater , so I shut off the heater and tried going back into electric mode , and that’s when FORM kicked on and wouldn’t go off. It’s been a week now and it’s still on. It gave me the refresh oil message 1 time and that’s since gone away but FORM is still active … I’ve gassed it up also ….. I’ll be taking a 3 hour drive this weekend , I’ll keep you all posted ….. if only I hadn’t turned on the heater when it was cold , while going uphill….. hopefully it goes away or there may be more tech issues to this heater and FORM in the cold thing…. Bad wiring , or something….. hope for the best , brace for the worst … I have 2023 Rubicon , with 1426 miles
I'd like to hear what happens after your drive. Have you checked your oil to see if the level is high or to see if it smells like gas?

@@Wrangler4XEFans I got it out of form. Here is how it happened. I drove 100 miles today from Lynnwood to Leavenworth . I ran the battery down to 1% just before starting to climb the mountain , and when I reached the top of the mountain the vehicle decided to run normally again. Just as I started to go downhill the motor turned off in hybrid mode and started functioning correctly again.
I have a GC Summit. At 3,700 miles I started to experience vehicle runs about 5% electric. Then goes into electric not available without ever going back into electric. My drive to work is about 25 miles with about half the drive at freeway speeds.
Honestly feel this vehicle is turning out to be an engineering nightmare
Does it just say EMU without any other message? What's the temperature outside?
@Wrangler4XEFans I'm in Phoenix. This time of year 50 - 60 in morning, 70's during day. It displays FORM, electric not available.

Oil life is at 50%. However, I did a 15-mile road trip at freeway speed yesterday, and I finally came out of FORM.. I'm taking the GC into the dealer for another issue next week. The fuel guage indicator doesn't move to full until I drive the vehicle for several miles. I'll have the first oil change done at that visit. I'll report back.
Hi, this message is for the people that are stuck on FORM. I have been stuck on FORM since November and today I have found a way to get out of FORM that I could’ve done since the first day I got FORM. I drove to the airport to drop off my friend and the airport is 20 miles from my house. I used my wrangler 4xe obviously. So I drove 20 miles there and 20 miles back and I didn’t turn off the car. But right after I dropped my friend off and got on the highway my engine shut off. I thought something went wrong. Then I accelerate a little bit then it kicked back on. That time I knew that FORM is gone and I was happy. If you want FORM to go away, make sure your battery is fully depleted and you have a full tank of gas. Drive 20 miles there and 20 miles back. Like drive on the highway 20 miles and drive back 20 miles and i guarantee it’s gonna work because it worked for me.

All you have to do is reset the oil life percentage back to 100 percent. Takes ten seconds. You can let it run on form for a bit if you want too for a few minutes. Just use your mileage to know when you need an oil change. I do this all the time. I certainly am not running all over and burning gas for no reason. That defeats the purpose of the vehicle. You are welcome.
Brand new Sahara 4xe and I’ve put on 300 miles. Entered Form today after mostly electric driving for first week and a hybrid trip today. I think it’s odd that my oil life is already at 80% with only 309 miles on it. I filled it up and will take it for a long ride in esave mode.
Be sure to check out what the manual says about the break in period before that drive.

I am going to speculate that winter temperatures cause the rings to shrink just a fraction which leads to more gas bypass during those first minutes of ICE operation at least until engine temperatures come up a bit and the rings expand.
Sounds right to me. I don’t know the cause, I just know from all the videos I’ve watched that oil dilution is a bigger issue during the winter.
Doesn't the outside temperature effect FORM? I live in NW Pennsylvania. It doesn't start to warm up here until late May. I noticed FORM more often when I have a cold start.
YES. Big time. That's due to how oil dilution is impacted by cold temps. The combination of cold temps and short runs causes more of an issue.

Excellent …in winter you are forced into hybrid mode as full electric will not engage …so you get FORM
There’s a whole other discussion to be had. A lot of people have come to accept that electric mode just isn’t available in the cold. Many Canadians would agree. However, there are a lot of people that were able to maintain their electric mode all winter long. After my electric coolant heater repair over the winter, I was able to do electric mode all the time with no issues.
@@Wrangler4XEFans super interesting! Pattern recognition is an under appreciated artform. I love the way you take in all the details and feedback from people, process it to come up with a few different theories, get more feedback from the community and then try to recreate the problem to validate it. This video should be a PSA for anyone who has a 4xe or thinking about getting one (in my case).
Not that this helps the dialogue any(never seen form in 5k+ miles), but unless I'm just planning a 2 mile trip to my gym(I switch to electric mode in this case), I pop over to manual mode just so the engine is forced to run for a bit before it has to do anything serious. I just don't like the idea of the engine going from cold to full throttle, even knowing it circulates oil before firing up.
Hi I have an issue with my new 2022 wrangler 4xe, I usually use all electric mode since I use the car around town on a daily basis around 18 miles per day so the 22-24 miles is perfect for me I never use hybrid mode or e save and I never put gas…. but when I was in all electric my AC was on and it was blowing warm air not cold but when I shift to park it starts getting so cold I know my ac is good and it’s doing that since I’m using all the energy for driving but how can I change these settings so my wrangler can blow regular cold air from the ac while driving because it only blows cold air when I’m in park!
Now that is a weird one. I’d have that looked at. Can you hear your AC compressor “spin up” when you are sitting still? It has a pretty distinct sound that sounds like something winding up. If you are sitting still and hit the AC butting on, you can hear the compressor spin up. I’d be curious if you drive a distance then stop and put it in park, can you hear that spin up?
@@Wrangler4XEFans thanks for the reply I was able to get it to work turns out I was just adjusting the temperature to 60 but I had to actually press the AC button which I didn’t see my old car all I had to do was adjust the temperature to the lowest lol

Can you go through tow/haul mode and the possibility of getting the brake controller on the 4xe/maybe why it isn’t included by factory?
The 4XE doesn't have a tow/haul mode. I haven't done a brake controller. I never really haul anything that needs it. The Wrangler only has a 3500 pound tow capacity and I only occasionally tow a utility trailer. I never go far enough to justify a controller. Plus, living in Ohio, don't hit many hills.

Do the non-hybrid 4 cylinder Jeeps get a message in the winter telling them they need to drive for two hours on the highway or to avoid short trips? I think the FORM software needs an update.
The 4xe has a lot of d stops and starts which is different from a regular gas only jeep.
It sounds lik this condition is a result of the ICE (Internal combustion engine) turning on and off (possibly) without really running long enough to come up to sustained operating temps. I am sure the engineers have built in the FORM fail safe software to work around engine damage. Rapid and uncontrolled heating and cooling cycles can crack an engine block or do other severe damage. Keeping the engine running or completely off allows the engine to stabilize to a constant temp a steady state condition unless excess heat is fed into the system by the all electric motor, which gets harder the farther the temps drop.
I’ve had my 2021 wrangler 4x4e for 2 weeks. The other day when I was leaving work I started the jeep and the engine started racing about 2000 rpms. This was the first time it had done this and has been doing it a couple of times a day now. Do you have any suggestions or reasons why. I’m completely new to this technology
The 4XE has a start cycle the first time the engine runs for a while. It’s a timed cycle that ensures the moisture is cleared from the catalytic converter. As long as you don’t place too high a demand, it will stay in that state for a designated time.
During that cycle, the clutch between the gas engine and the transmission is open. So propulsion comes from the electric motor in the transmission and electric charge comes from the motor/generator on the front of the engine.

Have you experienced or can you explain why the car will just break all of a sudden in the D Dr. light will come on blinking and then you have to put it back and park in back in the drive and hopefully it goes
That’s auto park. It happens if you open the door while driving. It can also happen if one of your door connectors are loose. Did you happen to notice if your done light popped on at the same time? It might have been really quick? Or did you happen to not have a door all the way closed?
I have a 4xe. I had the FORM issue since November and it won’t go away. I tried everything that was in the manual and still it won’t disappear. I took it to the dealer two times and they said it’s normal. Now it’s almost close to summertime and still it won’t go away.
Also I noticed that when I did my oil changes it disappears. But after like a week it kicks back on.
LOTS of dealership service people have said it’s normal. The problem is, they really don’t know what normal is. You might have a bad electric coolant heater hiding in the background.
What does it mean when it say when it says Hybrid needs Service in the display It comes and goes
That needs to be looked at by the dealership.

FORM has become a problem since I can never use electric mode. Jeep screwed up on this one. Other hybrids don't do that.
Even in E save …you are still in hybrid mode and short engine runs

I now know exactly how an engine works.. I was hoping to see the operation of the electric mode..
