Short Engine Run Avoidance

  • This is a technique I utilize to avoid short engine runs when my electric range falls just a little short. If your trip is 25 miles and your electric range, avoiding that short 3 mile engine run might avert some oil dilution which might avert FORM parameters.

    Just hit my first FORM on my 3 month old 4xe. And it totally was me running short trips on the ICE. Spent most of the previous 3 months all electric and have a BIG road trip planned and was like, probably need to brake in the engine all the way before I drive half across the country. But was not thinking about FORM... within a few days with a cold front I got stuck in FORM for like 5 days. Finally said F this and went on a 2 hour drive in the boonies and Mr. 4xe is all happy now back allowing me back in to electric. Lesson learned..... NO short drives with ICE in the cold, ever.

    Watch your oil temps to get an idea where your motor is at. Get the oil up to a minimum of 155-160 before your start reving beyond 3000-3500. One of the biggest contributors to engine breakdown/failure in Jeeps is owners not giving the engine oil proper warm up. Beyond that, once it is up to temp, make sure to exercise it thoroughly. The happiest motors I've seen internally are regularly run throughout their rev range after proper warm up. Having direct injection will more than likely still lead to a fair amount of carbon buildup on the valves over time since you're not getting the benefits of fuel washing over them; but the rest of the motor will stand the test of time this way (provided it's getting routine oil changes).
    Remember folks, just because it's a hybrid doesn't mean you can stop taking care of your main power plant. Exercise the 4 banger regularly and it'll last for years to come.

    My 4xe would drive like a hybrid when in FORM, engine stopped running at stop signs. Had software updates completed a few days ago and now engine keeps running all the time when in FORM. This way the engine will warm up to full operating temperature.

    In the GC, you can knock it down into sport mode in any driving mode (hybrid, electric, or Esave) and the ICE will run and stay on even at a stop light.

    Just so I understand... I can't run short trips when that is where I need to go... and it won't run electric when it is cold (I also live in the northern midwest). SO I need to drive a LONG distance (and burn lots of gas) to get the engine up to temp and add milage to the vehicle reducing the value of the vehicle, so I can eventually run some electric to save gas..... Somebody has some Jeep-splaining to do to have this make sense.... esp. what you were trying to show us....

      People in Seattle are suing Jeep over this. It's a class action. Jeep wasn't honest about the inability of the vehicle to be used in cold weather long term. It's gonna bite them.
      I drove mine across Canada in the winter and never entered FORM, but I was driving all day. In normal conditions the vehicle will never satisfy FORM in the cold. You have to cover up the front of your Jeep or something. Easier just to change the oil or refill gas.

    To help prevent this, they should allow you to set a minimum mileage, like 35mph, for the engine to run in both gas and engine. There have been many times I would prefer the hybrid mode, but the engine would run in electric mode, and this a fix, but it shouldn't need to be this way. The same can be said for the regenerative breaking feature, as I preferred the old harder breaking, rather than the weker breaking method that we have now. They should give us the option, like other vehicles do, for how aggressive you want the breaking to be.

    • @seanmtak7573
      @seanmtak7573 Год назад

      You can switch the regen breaking on and off. I like it for when you’re going faster rather than stop and go traffic.

    Somewhat related point. Hit with cold weather in NJ so been employing your method. Also notice that latching for e save not working. Was working post software upgrade last month until yesterday - but vehicle is defaulting to Hybrid on restarts now- not sure if due to cold weather or coincidence.

    "e-save" os about the most inefficient way possible to charge your battery. There is no reason to use it except in emergencies. Your current MPG will go down, not up.
    If you want to clear FORM, fill up your tank (leave it a quarter empty at all times since it's all it take) and change your oil. Burning gas over it is stupid.

  • @michaeldegans1354
    @michaeldegans1354 Год назад

    I drive in electric 99% of the time. I live in a city. I only use gas on road trips. I *hate* whoever decided the vehicle has to start in hybrid every time. That's about the only time I use gas. Accidentally. I keep the tank as empty as possible so I can satisfy FORM immediately when it appears. Oil changes every 3K miles.

    So what defines “short engine run” - is it purely operating temp?

    • @Wrangler4XEFans
      @Wrangler4XEFans  Год назад +1

      I'm not sure I'm qualified to give THE answer. But I would say anything that doesn't run it long enough to get the temperature up in the 170s or 180s is likely too short. If you drive in hybrid mode and have a lot of times where the engine kicks on when leaving stop lights and other stops, those are all short runs.

      @@Wrangler4XEFans But you're the expert! :) - I had FORM and engine heating cooling after I purchased in DC 2021 and it sorted itself out. Had it very rarely in 2022 and then last week after new fill up (and recalling the engine coming on a few times) FORM started. I'm in Northern NJ and we've had an off-and-on cold winter. In December and most of Jan i was able to go to and from work (20 miles round trip) in electric (with diminished battery capacity on colder days). Then, a week agog, FORM came back. What was interesting is that i would drive to work (non-highway) (max speed 40-50) and not be able to go into electric. BUT...at the end of the day I could drive home in electric. Next day, whether it was 20 degrees or 35 degrees, FORM in the morning at start up. Now today, 30 degrees FORM is gone and i can drive to work all electric. BUT...engine randomly came on and said electric mode temporarily unavailable after 10 min of electric driving. This was RIGHT when i was arriving at the gym. And so knowing what you've told me I checked the temp and i was only at 140... so i fired it up in e-save and drove around until i was up in the 170. Hope you can follow all this :)
