Saturn's orbit is 29 earth years. This relates to a spiritual process known as 'Saturn's Return' - when Saturn swings back around to where it was relative to Earth when you were born, you sort of go through some shit - basically it's when you hit your late 20's and start reconsidering what you want life to look like, what your priorities really are. Will you let old grudges be anchors that hold you down, or will you let go to rise up and be reborn in this next phase of life. Saturn is the Roman God of Time, bringer of old age.
Also "TOOL IS LIKE THE FINAL BOSS IN ROCKBANDS" should be on a T-shirt, that's rad-

“Leaden” is referring to the metal/element Lead. Your grudges are made of Lead and will weigh you down and drown you. He saying let them go and turn your grudges into something positive, gold (trans mutate them from lead to gold). The scream is is him shedding himself of all of his grudges that weigh him down and then he says let go a bunch of times. It’s all about letting go of your grudges and allowing that total release to change you as a person for the better.

    • @darrenjenkins466
      @darrenjenkins466 3 года назад +10

What I found more interesting about this specific lyric is that Turning the lead into gold makes me think the grudges are still there even if you let them go being gold is heavier than lead; however being able to take those grudges and turn them into useful/positive energy. Learning from your experiences and forgiving, but never forgetting.

@@MrHunterbuchanan Yes, Tool is the smartest band, though Yes has equal credibility to be up there. I'm really just exaggerating as there are of course actual geniuses in music such as Brian May, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Tom Scholz, Simon & Garfunkel, Ke$ha, Dexter Holland and of course Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. But very few bands actually incorporate such complex mathematics into music so well. Though Maynard likely is the one to have arranged the patterns in Lateralus, Danny Carey is largely responsible for the complex polymeters and polyrhythms found in their music.

This is one that it is about the build up. Tool is a group that you just ride the waves. Close your eyes and let their songs take you into your subconscious and let it wash over you. You will pick up different. Interpretations each song and each listen. They make you think. Their name is Tool because they make their songs to use as a tool to evolve yourself mentally and metaphysically to a spiritual but not in a religious manner as Maynard had a lot of problems with the way his mothers church had shunned her after she had a brain aneurysm and was paralyzed. It made him question the beliefs.

I still get new things each listen and I’ve been a fan a long while.

Edit: I would say you should just listen to the whole albums and film it all. Saturn rising an coming back around is a reference to planetary movements and the never ending passage of time and that as we age we need to learn to let go of grudges. The climax at the end with the scream and the lyrics "let go, let it go" symbolize learning to and actually letting go of grudges. At it's core the song is about personal growth and maturity.
Band Members are Maynard James Keenan on vocals, Danny Carey on drums, Justin Chancellor/Paul D'Amour on Bass, and Adam Jones on Guitar. Keep in mind they write their lyrics with a certain ambiguitity so that every person can interpret them their own way.

"Leaden" as in made of Lead, the metal. It's a metaphor. The Leaden Anchor, this heavy grudge that drags people under the water. If one can let that go, or better yet, transmute that leaden, heavy anchor into gold, then you're turning something that drags you down into something valuable.

The word you were looking for was "suspenseful". Tool are masters at building suspense through a whole bunch of methods including a little bait and switch here and there. I like watching first time Tool reactions to see if and when people realise that the drums aren't as easy to head nod to as you initially think.

The song references the Saturn Return - Saturn's orbit or position in the sky returns to the same spot every 29.5 Years. It begins "Accending" to its position around 27.5 Years(~10,000 days). Saturn has an influence of bringing you into the next chapter of life (spits you out like a child). Most agree that you really don't become an adult until you are about 30. And each Saturn return has a significant impact on your life. (Hang on or be humbled again)
Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let's you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent
    Saturn comes back around.
Lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone
To consume you till you choose to let this go
    Choose to let this go
The song embodies truly growing up and learning what's important in life. Tough and humbling experiences where you come out on the other side of it like a child in a new life.

Tool is very unique in arrangement, timing and lyrics. You can and have appreciate the music and not quite capture the intention of the lyrics. That's ok, for most fans it takes a few listen to, to attempt to capture understanding. Most conceptual bands does take life experience to empathize. I think that's why these bands have loyalty and longevity, they grow with you.

Saturn is commonly used to reference a period of change it evolution in life. The song is referencing how the person they are talking about is being offered the chance to grow/change/evolve every time Saturn comes, but they are continuously thrown back down and humbled instead of being lifted up because they refuse to let go of the grudge they have. It's an overall great message in the song about letting go of hate that is weighing yourself down and preventing you from growing in life. Like he says, choose to let it go.
Leaden is referencing the stone he's telling them to give away (the grudge), meaning he's saying the grudge is as large as a stone or anchor that this person is just dragging around and it is weighing him down because it is leaden (made of lead).

This song is about letting go the grudge, overcoming it by letting go. The lyrics have lots of alchemy analogies (stone, led, gold, kissing of the waters, the return of Saturn, etc.)

  • @Hisdudeness9500

The orbital period of Saturn is just over 10,000 Days, which is the approximate length of time Maynard's mother was sick before she passed (note the title of their next album). The "Grudge" he was holding was referencing his anger at the world for watching her deteriorate, and he had a choice to either let it go or let it consume him.

"Saturn ascends, choose one or ten". People used to say Saturn ruled the 'tenth' house, and so when he ascends you are presented with a choice of 1 (choosing a new life/path) or 10 (continuing in your ways), and so Maynard is using that to describe the choice we have of letting anger consume us, or to let it go.

Scarlett Letter Man refers to a book by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Yes, it takes some research, living experience on this beautiful Globe we are on, and growing to then never really understand what Maynard is getting at. Remember, the name of the band is TOOL, maybe use it as such for a tool to expand your understanding of the Universe, your/our place in it, and grow/evolve.

Thanks agagin for another Tool reaction Jojo, first of all the guy last time who said:If you liked the scream in this, wait till you listen to the Grudge. He was refering to the 20+sec scream not the song itself.I love Grudge though.
As with all Tool songs everyone can take the meaning of the lyrics as he wants. To me this one is about holding grudges, and letting them go in the end, cause there is nothing positivie coming out of holding a grudge forever in the end.
At the beginning it is about people who hold the grudge against someone and go around the world letting everyone know---Wear the grudge like a crown of negativty.
And at the second verse it is about how someone who is holding a grudge doesn't want to let it go, because if he does then the grudge is gone, and to him it may feel, like he was in the wrong for holding onto it. So he doesn't want to let it go----Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all falls down. And lyrics relating to Saturn are most probably of Astrological meaning. Because....I might be wrong, but a human body replicates all cells in about 7 years, so every 7th year you are a new person. And a lot of things or change happen every 7th year in people lives. And Saturn takes about 30 years to travel round the Sun, so every 30 years in a humans live you are at the start point again...midlife crisis and so on, well maybe. Well whenever a opportunity comes to change you should let the old grudges go.
And at the end. Give away the stone, let the waters take and transmutate those leaden grudges into gold, it means to me...to just let go of the grudge. Grudge is like a heavy stone, or burden you always have with you. So let that go and transmutate those leaden grudges into gold. As lead is know that it's a very heavy metal you would get shitloads of gold for it ;D.
Well get rid of the negativity and then let positivity in again. lead and gold ;D
    That's my take.
And Jojo, I'd suggest Right in Two, Vicarious or Aenima as next Tool song. They are pretty straight forward in my opinion.
PS:Oh and if you like long screams, check out Linkin Park:Given Up 2007 Rock Am Ring.
And sorry for my non-perfect English.

When we listen to music and it makes us THINK; that's some damn good music! lol....seriously though....Tool has been around since the 80's!!! And even then they would blow you mind. I'm not sure this second if you've listened to 46+2 yet, if not, please do with lyrics :) Their second CD, released in 1993 is called 'Undertow' and you might like the song 'Sober' from that one. Tool went through a really drawn-out lawsuit before this with their former label, one that wouldn't be completely resolved until FEAR INOCULUM was ready to come out. I feel like Maynard's lyrics on this album were blowing off steam on a lot of songs. Especially on "Ticks & Leeches" (holy shit).

I'm not sure the timeline matches up for that connection. This album came out in 2001, and the claims upon which the lawsuit was filed were made in 2007. (The lawsuit was with an insurance company, not Volcano Entertainment, although Tool have obviously not always been on great terms with the label either.) 10,000 Days even came out between the two events.

    • @seamusburke639
      @seamusburke639 3 года назад

@@NealStidham I remember the insurance thing. I'd be very surprised if there weren't any legal entanglements separating from Volcano, so that probably fed Maynard's frustrations for LATERALUS (or just his feelings on the music industry in general).
