Danny Carey played basketball as a young man and found himself choosing between a career as a player and a career as a musician. Fortunately for everyone he made the right choice. Since he is a big basketball fan, he always plays in the uniform of the city where the concert is. Often the local teams give him a uniform with his name, as in this case.
"He must hold some power”. Understatement of the year. This is the band who toppled Taylor Swift off the number 1 spot Billboard charts summer of 2019. Tool is legendary and up there with Rush, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc.
When I first got into Tool on the debut album, I was drawn they had a Rush vibe in how they approached their songwriting. Such a depth of sound. Little did I know how effin great they would become.
Danny had a jazz background throughout high school, and during the late 90’s and early 2000’s he took a lot of inspiration from Asia and the Middle East. He has an electric kit along with his HUGE normal kit. He is 6’5 and 58 years old. Such a beast!!!
Yes sir. He actually took almost two years traveling the world to various cities, towns, Indigenous tribal areas to listen and learn their drumming and the techniques behind them. He did his "school work" big time.....
Danny was 58 when this was recorded earlier in the year. Vic Firth is the company that sponsored this video. They make Danny’s sticks so that’s why they have the info on them.
You, young prince, have just been introduced to Danny Carey known as "The human octopus". Thought by many to be the greatest drummer alive and by many as the greatest drummer to ever wield the sticks. I lean towards the latter, but let the music guide your decision. Good video keep going with the Tool reactions and Danny Carey will never let you down. Once you see this video you never listen to Tool the same again because you hear all the different sounds that DC brings, whereas before, they may have just blended into the background. NO CAP.
Royce - I don't think he dug it that much. It's kinda strange, because every other reaction to Tool I've seen, the people are just mind blown. I hate to be 'that guy', and I don't really like when people say this but....I just don't think he gets it. Which is fine, I guess. Everyone is different. Music hits people in different ways. Tool just happens to be one of those bands where it's almost a given that you will be having goosebumps while listening to them.
We are born of one breath, one word. we are all one spark, sun becoming. it's neither dark, nor that shrouded - literally we are all one. Born from one life, the life of the universe, the spark of the big bang that threw all this energy into motion. We're light. The same light. that's what the song Pnuma is about.
Keep in mind that he is playing multiple different rhythms at the same time. These are called Polyrhythms and are often very hard to accomplish, especially the level of Carey.
The star is taken from sacred geometry and is Tool’s band symbol. Called the Heptagram, its symbolism is represented in many cultures and flags and is even used in law enforcement badges . Its meaning ranges from 7 days of creation, to the first seven verses of the Quran, to protection to those who display it. Tool’s use of it is to invite open conciousness to spiritual growth .
“Hmm... it’s a weird feeling, honestly. Dang...what did I just get my self into bruh?” Ahh to go back and experience that exact feeling the first time it “clicks” Please check out “Rosetta stoned” next. What may start out as a strange trip, turns into something truly mind blowing!
So Tool is from LA and Danny is a Lakers fan, but he’ll wear custom jerseys that say his name on the back in most cities he plays in... this concert was in Boston ... I’m kinda shocked a Lakers fan would even wear that shit tho... 😂... also in reference to the drumsticks this video was made as a promo for the drumstick manufacturer so that’s how they know all those numbers! Check out Schism next!!
The song is essentially a description of the idea that humanity is all apart of the same breath of life. That's at least the vaguest explanation I can give. It's a relatively new song, released last year so all the details haven't come out about it yet.
Your first concert will forever change your life man, no joke!! Any concert as long as you love the music! I've seen Tool 3 times and it is never less than perfect.
When you spoke on feeling like you were used to it, felt like you've heard it, that's the thing about Tool, from the get go you feel like you already know it somehow, they tap into a very primal/cosmic vein. First time I ever heard them, when I bought the first album, it was that exact same feeling that you just described and it always feels that way, an absurdly great band.
First, this is one of the best songs released in the last 20 years. Secondly, Young sir, you hit the nail on the head. Where do you think all the hip-hop beats come from? They come from all over the world, and from the best drummers ever. They weren't just made up from drum machines. I would imagine tribes from all over the world created the greatest beats. Real drummers use these influences. To be honest...any hip-hop beat you have ever heard before is from some other genre, be it rock, blues, jazz, country, celtic, african, asian, european, etc. Be careful going down the Tool wormhole....you will fall in Love!!
I just went to my first tool concert in Feb. You have to experience them live. I've loved listening to them for decades and their concerts are phenomenal. Truly an experience. Watching Danny smash the drum solo is something on another level, the theatrics, the quality, 1000% recommend.
My god tool is such an amazing band, Danny best drummer ever man. I listened to rap and hip hop strictly until I was like 21 but tool was the e xception, something just drew me to this band
I’ve been a fan of Tools music a long time, I’ve been alive for all of their albums, but until the last few years I never really knew how amazing Danny and the whole band in general are. They are all supremely talented at what they do. Watching drum cam videos like this makes you appreciate his skill even more. He’s not just drumming normally, he’s got all kinds of rhythms and shit going on lol. He should make a drum cam video for every one of their songs lol.
Danny and Neil Peart were close pals along with Stewart Copeland from The Police. All drummers with incredible talent. Neil's your work is done, rest in peace.
Oh and the reason he’s in a Laker’s jersey in that video is because he changed during the intermission. Strutted out onto the stage wearing it to goad the Boston audience. 😂
I was there too! section 13 though but still great seats at the garden. My third Tool show, and one I will remember fondly for the rest of my life, no doubt. They are something else.
Tool holds a lot of weight in all genres. I've seen them a lot and at shows with different artists you can see them on the side of the stage watching them. The respect in the industry crosses over.
It seems as though Danny takes you on a trip to outter space and the beginning is slow but then accelerates to top speed then brings you back down to earth slowly and safely back to where you started... awesome experience best drummer alive and I say that because there are other drummers out there who are just as talented but none who can play in one Accord and in sync with the mind of manyard
Danny is an amazing drummer with many styles, that’s why you hear all different styles in his drumming. Very well respected among the top drummers of the world.
I got to see this live in concert in Spokane, WA literally 12 hours before our governor shut down the state for COVID. It was the absolutely last "normal" thing I went to and it was absolutely UNREAL. I've seen them on every North American tour since 2001 and it has always been worth it. I hope you get to see them live, someday.
Wow!!! Where to start..... you just need to fall down the rabbit hole of Tool.... it's a trip.... Danny Carey is a polyrhythmic god.... probably the best drummer in all of rock currently..... enjoy.... can't tell you which album is best.... they all rock....!!!
This concert was in Boston and Danny is a huge hoop fan..Danny is not from Boston but when he plays in different cities he wears their basketball shirts..I live 30 minutes from Harvard
Tool's songwringing process is very collaborative: Danny and the other two instrumentalists, Justin (bass) and Adam (guitar) come up with riffs, get together to jam, and come up with the songs that they then send to Maynard, the singer, to come up with lyrics to fit what they've written. Everyone has a voice in the process, and since they're all experienced musicians, the end result is as tight as can be.
Danny Carey did change into a Kobe jersey during an intermission in Boston (TD) Garden to razz the locals into some boos. Then he busted into Chocolate Chip Trip and all was forgiven.
He us actually from Kansas hes a huge basketball fan big timeJayhawks fan to be exact. Every show he plays at if hes in the city where a professional basketball team is he wears their basketball shirt. Or if he's in a town where they have a college basketball team he'll wear their shirt. Just representing
First, Danny was given the NBA shirt which led to him getting more. Be used the Vic Furth drum sticks, they set up the whole camera thing to showcase Danny using their drum sticks. The lyrics are what drives the drum beat. Notice Danny accentuates the key words in the song. The lead singer, Maynard J. Keenan lost his mom to cancer. She suffered 27 years / 10,000 days...another tool song. Maynard is very aware of the spiritual aspects of this physical world but struggles with why his mother, a very faithful Christian, suffered so long. There is a lot of pain in Tools music, the pain of life on a sin ridden planet.
Danny is a big basketball/Kansas/Lakers fan and would wear those jerseys during shows. For back to back shows at Staples center some years back, they gave him a customized Laker jersey. Then pretty much every arena they played after that, they gave him a jersey for the team that played there.

Danny Carey is maybe the best living drummer on the planet. It's hard to say that, as there are a lot of amazing musicians out there, but he's definitely in the discussion. Either way, he's unbelievable. He can jam with professional Jazz players (and does). He and Justin Chancellor (Tool's bassist) are an amazing unit. Enjoy the ride.
I know I am late but...Danny Carey is the best drummer alive today...in my opinion may be the best ever lived. He's on the top of all lists on best drummers
Vic Firth is a percussion equipment company. They often make custom drumsticks for people they sponsor and offer them on their website for others to buy. plus this video was made by Vic Firth
Maynard Keenan, another of Rocks great voices. 'Sleeping Beauty' by one of Maynard's other bands, 'Perfect Circle', really showcases his voice. And if you think the lyrics are strange, have a look at some of the vids from the album Ænima. Definitely one of the most interesting personalities in the industry, didn't go the; 'Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll' path. Instead, when he's not touring he's at his vinyard where he makes an award winning wine.
Yes!! I'm glad you saw this view of the most underrated metal drummer ever!! That might not be accurate, but Danny Carey is veeerrrryyy special, no cap!!! (Did I use that right? I'm 40, so...) Loving your shit Jojo!
The star is called a unicursal hexagram, it is the symbol of Thelema: the Law of 'Love under Will'. 'Every Man and every Woman is a Star' 'Do what though Wilt is the whole of the Law, Love is the Law, Love under Will' 'There is no God but Man'...
In fact Tool had to cancel their biggest North American tour ever. The upside is when they do tour again, you’ll know it’s worth getting a ticket... Larry Bird was one of the smartest (in terms of basketball smarts) basketball players ever. He could read the court and know just where to move like nobody else. He was pretty big but didn’t have the athleticism of some other players. But he made up for it by reading the court and anticipating. Vic Firth (the company who sponsored and posted the video) knows the dimensions of Danny Carey’s signature drumsticks because Vic Firth manufactures Danny Carey’s signature drumsticks. (Vic Firth, founded by the former timpanist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is the biggest manufacturer of drumsticks.)
Am sure it has already been said, but the 3 instrument guys (gods;) create the music first to completion. So the music is stand alone - in a sense. Then the vocalist gets the music and adds his piece. So, the vocals have to do with what the vocalist is thinking about, but the music is a different creation entirely.
Tool have amazing lyrics, some of the best in music, but the songs from this album Fear Inoculum focused more on the instruments, especially Danny Carey. The whole album is essentially a 90 minute drum solo with some guitars and vocals sprinkled in. (Exaggeration but point is made).
Only two bands I saw live could I just watch the drummer play and feel I got everything in a show. That was Rush with Peart and of course The Octopus. Carey and Peart have such a precision to their drumming and both have unique ways they take you. Not coincidentally my favorite bands. I think Tool took more of the King Crimson route of Prog and Rush went a lot towards Yes.
@@louofm1 I've seen Neil much more myself going back to Moving Pictures. I think Neil's whole body of work has a lot more to offer. I was drawn to Tool for they had a Rush vibe how they approached their songwriting and like Rush got better album by album. Neil has such an active rhythm as if he is ahead of the beat as he plays. Danny has that technical ability to build into a song like Neil but he does it different. But I love how both have that timing precision and strike fast and hard. Maybe because they are both tall with Danny beating Neil by an inch at 6' 5" lol.
Danny Carey played basketball as a young man and found himself choosing between a career as a player and a career as a musician. Fortunately for everyone he made the right choice. I was at this show. He wore a Kobe (RIP) Lakers jersey for the encore, just to have some fun with us Celtics fans.

I saw Rush about 12 or 13 times. Peart was the absolute best. However, Danny Carey is right up there in technical ability too
@@louofm1 I've seen Neil much more myself going back to Moving Pictures.
That symbol is the unicursal hexagram. It represents unity after struggle. Its also used for invoking and banishing spirits during ritual magick.

Try “Rosanna” by Toto. Drum riff is the Perdie Shuffle. Hard beat to play and another song of there’s is “Hold the line”
