    The song is about a friend of the band who thought that being drunk gave him artistic strength. He's singing from the perspective of someone who justifies their own bodily harm by the use of alcohol.

      One key takeaway I've learned over the years is many things may be what gave the initial inspiration to an idea, but not necessarily what the song is "about".

    • @TheBlackQueen
      @TheBlackQueen 3 года назад +1

      @@toodrunktotastethischicken What a song is about is what the point the artist is trying to get across is. We know that this song was about the guy I described because that is what Adam Jones claimed in an interview. The point of the song is "If you become addicted and a junkie, well, that's your fault".

    • @DESTRUCTIONKATCHUP
      @DESTRUCTIONKATCHUP 3 года назад +1

      The lyrics were written before Tool, for another band. I dont think Adam was playing guitar with Maynard at the time but I could be wrong and Adam could just know the story behind it anyways. Not sure. But I would probably only take Maynards word for it, and he's known to mess with us for fun so... whatever lol

      @TheBlackQueen 3 года назад

      @@DESTRUCTIONKATCHUP Only the first verse was written for another song with Maynard's previous band. It's easily the most detached part of the song from the subject of alcohol and addiction, likely put into that context after the fact.

    For this track the bassist was Paul D'amour, and his heavier play style compared to Justin Chancellor (featured in The Pot) is most prevelent in this song. My take on this song has always been that his bass line is the drug in the system. While the guitar (Adam Jones) is the bodies reaction to the drugs,mainly mimicking a heart and the pulse. Notice how the guitar seems somewhat panicked by the bass at first before falling into a rhythm with it. They gel throughout the song with its ups and downs, their rhythms matching as the drug is being carried while the heart beats faster. There's the hearts panic as it begins to realise somethings wrong upon the peak of the rise before it tries to go with the flow again. Until the final few bars, like a failing heart beating its last few thumps before silence. Too late to just be sober. Orrrr I thought way too much into this as I did spend my teenage years smoking pot and listening to prog rock and metal like Tool!

  • @harleyadam4813

    The whole song is about the duality of the addict. They want to be good, but they want that feeling of the high. "Why can we not be sober? I just want to start this over. Why can't we drink forever? I just want to start this over." They can't escape it. Either side of it. They feel trapped.. "I will work to elevate you just enough to bring you down" is the addict wanting to love someone and make them better and making that person believe, but then the addiction doesn't go away and the person they love realizes that their loved one is doomed and they can't help them. Don't ask me how I know. This song holds a special, but bittersweet place in my heart.

    These lyrics are actually something that makes me like and hate weed, cuz its perfect for celebrating or unwinding, but if your not doing anything with purpose, it makes you feel like shit... Which either becomes depression or motivation... The reason I sometimes hate it is because your trying to lift your spirit but then you get introspective... But now your high and not only do you not want to go and put that effort in, but for the moment it would be a bad idea lmao so it makes me sit there like, yeah I get it brain, I've been fucking up, but I'm not going to stop that while high at 10pm lmao so let me enjoy this now and tomorrow is a new day, but you can't outsmart yourself...

When his second band A Perfect Circle dropped the song "Judith" it strengthened my belief in that. Just a few years ago I learned it was obvious & straight forward; simply about addiction from the internet and was bummed. Not because I wanted it to be about religion; just because the lyrics weren't as artistic as I thought they were.
