Limited roles Black actors were able to do in the 50s and didn't have any controls with the powers that be who only saw Blacks as stereotypical one-dimensional people. Wow shocking such comments from someone of a group of people supposedly aligned with and sympathizes with Blacks too.

I wasn’t born until 1954 but I barely remember watching this show .. but my parents loved them and especially my dad .. I guess if the black community felt they didn’t like it then I can understand that .. but we were not ever racist against anyone and I am proud how I was raised..
I watched it faithfully as a child. I thought it was the best program on TV. I was sorry to see it go. Beulah was another great program with a black woman playing the lead. I make no apologies for loving those shows.
Granted, the acting is B Minus Level but the story is an entertaining one and all of the characters are pretty likable. I love the advice on annuities, still true! And Andy looks just like Wendell Pierce. This is the first Amos and Andy I've ever seen and I'd be happy to see more.
I used to watch Amos and Andy every night I believe it was on, mainly reruns I guess, rather do my homework I would watch Amos and Andy. Always seem to get into trouble oh, many of them I sort numerous times over and over but they always make me laugh. Every character was different than the other. It was corny but still I loved it as a kid.
Where’s ago this this was taken off the air because they felt it was an insult to the black race. It was not an insult to the black race. These people were professionals in their field and they knew that business and they were damn good as a young boy, and as a grown-up man Watched their programs more than once I never laughed so damn much in my whole life they were the best comic groups that I’ve ever seen, and they should not be dragged in to a racist bunch of bullshit. At the Oaks that I grew up in bedford-stuyvesant Brooklyn New York, I was back in the mid-to-late forties, my teenage years, I lived in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, right where The Honeymooners, lived. I also lived in Biloxi Mississippi in Bay st. Louis Mississippi, 2nd grade in Biloxi School, the nun introduced my brother and myself to the class, then recessed came around, and a couple of kids approach my brother and myself, made my brother rest in peace. One of the kids sent to us, you all from New York, and we should go ahead yes, they proceeded to beat the s*** out of the two of us. They called us Niger lovers oh, I never heard that term ever before. We were living with my grandparents, at the time and my grandfather said we don't need this and he pulled us out of school we missed a whole year of school because of that incident. I have to tell you, later on we move back to Brooklyn New York, my parents were divorced my mother decided she was going to send this down to Bay st. Louis, where my other grandparents lived. On the bus down it was supposed to be an express bus from Port Authority to Biloxi vented transfer the Bay Saint Louis. The bus broke down on the Jersey Turnpike then we had to switch from bus to bus the bus the bus, we would totally exhausted, the only people that offered to help us remember we was young kids oh, they had a sign for coloreds to sit in the back, two black ladies took us by the hand and brought us to the back sitting on the elapsed and eventually falling to sleep. Not a single white person offered to help us oh, I absolutely never forgot that experience. I wish people would squit judging people by the color of their skin, it's totally stupidity in my opinion. However today with a fake make-believe President Biden, he endorses racism, along with many of his cohorts. They still support the KKK and they are trying to divide our country. Democrat, his party has always supported the KKK. Right now the supporting Chinese Communist Party trying to turn our country into a third world Communist Party. Great place back then. As a white child growing up in the segregated Deep South, this show was where I was first introduced to the fact that there were highly educated, professional black people, such as doctors, lawyers, etc. I was amazed when my mother confirmed that fact. Why the NAACP ever objected to it is a mystery.
I am glad to see these back for the public to see. Michael Jackson Bought them, and held on to them, because he thought they made fun of black people, and stereotyped them. When in reality it showed them in an honorable light. People going through life as hard working and good people. Well except for the King fish! But when Jackson bought the rights to these gems, he cut off the royalties to the people in the episodes. they no longer received any money from the reruns. Nice Michael, real nice. The acting is first class, and good clean humor.

I didn't realize that those men were using bad English, I guess it was part of the show for them to be funny like that, but children could start using that in their every day speech back then. Kids now would not look at movies like that, but when I was a child it was something to see black people on the T.V. and they were funny, even the white people looked at it too, that was in 1955.
I bought the show on VHS and someone stole them. I was a great show. i also remember the controversy about the show. The original Actor were White people that played in BLACK FACE. When it came to TV that when BLACK PEOPLE WERE ACTORS. I think that how BLACK PEOPLE got started. What a beautiful show and such talented actors. Sadly, because of the two-bit, race-baiting idiots at the NAACP, this show was forceably cancelled because they claimed it depicted blacks as crooks and lazy and didn't represent their real advancements and achievements. If they (NAACP) bothered watching the show, they would have seen that blacks in this show were often represented by professionals such as government employees, doctors, lawyers, judges, police, secretaries, business owners, military, and teachers and utility workers without a scrap of disrespect or racism. The only characters that were crooked/lazy was Kingfish, but ALL sitcoms had such characters! Archie Bunker was depicted as an ignorant bigot, yet he was the centerpiece of "All in the Family". Fred Sanford was cast as a wisecracking junk store owner in "Sanford & Son" but he was the centerpiece. Ralph Cramden of "The Honeymooners" was cast as a complete idiot, but he was the main character. Because of the NAACP, the fine actors of "Amos and Andy" lost their lucrative careers and futures in acting and stage and were never able to regain it - many dying as unknowns in Hollywood. Thanks NAACP. You are the REAL racists. You RUINED the hard work of these wonderful people and stopped their art in its tracks. You stopped them and kept them from being successful. 😡

If it weren’t the ONLY representation of blacks on tv, it would have been a classic EVEN back then. However, Racism caused Nat King Cole’s musically classic tv program to be canceled… & he was actually PHYSICALLY beaten up for speaking up against its cancellation due to the protest from the southern white viewers,Blacks responded by protesting against Amos & Andy’s comedy. Shame that a comedy & employment for talented blacks chopped the show, but it had to go as too many whites began to believe that these stereotypes were TRUE representations of black culture & people.🙋🏽♀️
It angers me that Nat King Cole caught soo much hell back in those days. He actually wasn't portraying a stereotypical Black man, made music that white people loved and was still treated to the era of racism during the 40s through early 60s. I am not a fan of Amos and Andy yet I do understand the context of offensiveness shown and having it play out in the belief that is how Blacks are with why NAACP took a stand against that show. Blacks could only be shown in a comfortable palatable role that appealed to other Blacks and most definitely non Black.

When he went into the store first it was a guy at the counter on the side. When they come back to it it’s a woman at the counter on the opposite side in a diff store altogether. Someone should call the producers and have them fix this right away.
Sapphire had a very moral lesson....about work ethics...and about money you earn. Also that you shouldn't want more then you can afford to pay for. That's the lesson I learned growing up. Today's kids black or white want everything given to them.. even collage educations should be free. Nothing's free. Someone is paying for it. Yeah American citizens... that's who...and most workers are struggling to pay their bills. I wish we could go back to the morals of this country in the 50's. Children were a lot more protected. We had good neighbors. Everyone was happy with what they had. Everyone got along better. I went to school in Queens in the 50's. Things were pretty peaceful. There was communication with everyone. Easy when everyone spoke English...even broken English...but everyone made an effort. No one wants to communicate in person anymore. They are connected to their phones. My Grandmother talked to everyone she sat next to in the subway. It was easy to make a new friend. Wow! Do I miss those days of normal!!!

I watch Amos an Andy, I was Born in July 1949
I didn't realize that those men were using bad English, I guess it was part of the show for them to be funny like that, but children could start using that in their every day speech back then. Kids now would not look at movies like that, but when I was a child it was something to see black people on the T.V. and they were funny, even the white people looked at it too, that was in 1955.

I bought the show on VHS and someone stole them. I was a great show. i also remember the controversy about the show. The original Actor were White people that played in BLACK FACE. When it came to TV that when BLACK PEOPLE WERE ACTORS. I think that how BLACK PEOPLE got started. I also remember that there was a BLACK OWNED MOVIE STUDIO THAT WAS A SHAME IT DIDN'T STAY IN BUSINESS. NOW WE HAVE TYLER PERRY HE HAS A FANTASTIC STUDIO.
And now some people make that or more a year.
In 1978 a billboard in my home town had a sign saying, "Retire RICH!! Save $100,000 with us!"

These were intelligent, sophisticated actors and actresses. To portray these characters shows good ability in the profession. Redd Fox, Steve Urkil, n so many others are just as strreotypical. Archie bunker. George Jefferson Lamont Sanford so whats the prob its just acting

Evidently you must not have seen all the episodes. I have seen all the episodes many multiple times and I would state that Andy does not always win in the end.

What a beautiful show and such talented actors. Sadly, because of the two-bit, race-baiting idiots at the NAACP, this show was forceably cancelled because they claimed it depicted blacks as crooks and lazy and didn't represent their real advancements and achievements. If they (NAACP) bothered watching the show, they would have seen that blacks in this show were often represented by professionals such as government employees, doctors, lawyers, judges, police, secretaries, business owners, military, and teachers and utility workers without a scrap of disrespect or racism. The only characters that were crooked/lazy was Kingfish, but ALL sitcoms had such characters! Archie Bunker was depicted as an ignorant bigot, yet he was the centerpiece of "All in the Family". Fred Sanford was cast as a wisecracking junk store owner in "Sanford & Son" but he was the centerpiece. Ralph Cramden of "The Honeymooners" was cast as a complete idiot, but he was the main character. Because of the NAACP, the fine actors of "Amos and Andy" lost their lucrative careers and futures in acting and stage and were never able to regain it - many dying as unknowns in Hollywood. Thanks NAACP. You are the REAL racists. You RUINED the hard work of these wonderful people and stopped their art in its tracks. You stopped them and kept them from being successful. 😡
I don't find the show funny. But I do understand and take the show for what it was back then and the limited roles Black actors were able to do in the 50s. That's about all to say on this show to be honest. The comments by people Black, White and otherwise who don't understand that realistically it does show the characters as stereotypes,subsiervent and their comfort level of seeing Blacks especially Black men in the way those characters are speaks volumes to me. Nothing has progressed in how Blacks and non Blacks view Black people and want Blacks to be in a comfortable role not a role commanding power and take charge with a mixture of security and maturity. That's ok. Because my outlook on how I view other races who portray delusional confidence and power and don't have it at all but their skin color giving them that reason to be that way hasn't changed either. So I guess it is what it is!! Mentioning race baiting makes me also know how you probably view race and politically how you align as well. Honestly i understand the context of NAACP from where they were coming from. In a way in your skin color which is probably not Black won't understand.

If it weren’t the ONLY representation of blacks on tv, it would have been a classic EVEN back then. However, Racism caused Nat King Cole’s musically classic tv program to be canceled… & he was actually PHYSICALLY beaten up for speaking up against its cancellation due to the protest from the southern white viewers,Blacks responded by protesting against Amos & Andy’s comedy. Shame that a comedy & employment for talented blacks chopped the show, but it had to go as too many whites began to believe that these stereotypes were TRUE representations of black culture & people.🙋🏽♀️
It's the worst travesty in TV sitcom history to dismiss these talented pioneers of television and motion pictures.
It angers me that Nat King Cole caught soo much hell back in those days. He actually wasn't portraying a stereotypical Black man, made music that white people loved and was still treated to the era of racism during the 40s through early 60s. I am not a fan of Amos and Andy yet I do understand the context of offensiveness shown and having it play out in the belief that is how Blacks are with why NAACP took a stand against that show. Blacks could only be shown in a comfortable palatable role that appealed to other Blacks and most definitely non Black.

Since caucasions love wearing blackface why didn't they cast two caucasions in blackface to play the roles of Amos and Andy.

In addition, Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll, white actors who voiced the Amos, Andy, and Kingfish characters on radio, appeared in publicity photographs for the show in blackface.
When he went into the store first it was a guy at the counter on the side. When they come back to it it’s a woman at the counter on the opposite side in a diff store altogether. Someone should call the producers and have them fix this right away.

Sapphire had a very moral lesson....about work ethics...and about money you earn. Also that you shouldn't want more then you can afford to pay for. That's the lesson I learned growing up. Today's kids black or white want everything given to them..
even collage educations should be free. Nothing's free. Someone is paying for it.
Yeah American citizens... that's who...and most workers are struggling to pay their bills. I wish we could go back to the morals of this country in the 50's. Children were a lot more protected. We had good neighbors. Everyone was happy with what they had. Everyone got along better. I went to school in Queens in the 50's. Things were pretty peaceful. There was communication with everyone. Easy when everyone spoke English...even broken English...but everyone made an effort. No one wants to communicate in person anymore. They are connected to their phones. My Grandmother talked to everyone she sat next to in the subway. It was easy to make a new friend. Wow! Do I miss those days of normal!!!
