Thanks very kindly for posting. A sadly neglected classic series from the early days of television. As a kid in the early 50’s I dearly loved this show. Except for George of course. He was always getting in trouble and that would keep me nervous. Very, very nervous…

Cracks me up when they show that painting “ laughing and pointing at” Kingfish. Every time Sapphire throws him out, he takes that picture with him. Also funny when Sapphire was looking at Kingfish’s photograph all taped up, just before she threw it off the bureau for the second time. There are so many hilarious details in addition to the excellent writing and acting. Brilliant comedy.👍🏻👍🏻😆

I saw / heard an interview of Nick Stewart (Lightnin'), done shortly before he died in 2000. His comments were interesting. He said the show was demeaning to black people, but at the same time, this was the first time that an all black cast was on a television program, and that "you had to start somewhere." He pointed out that Amos N Andy paved the way for other black performers, like Sidney Pottier. He also didn't understand why the NAACP went after the TV show - the first chance black performers had an opportunity to make real money - while it was silent when the two white guys who did the radio show probably made millions of dollars over the years.

People who think this is a rascist program are not looking too hard at the show. As you can see, it is for the most part a "black" world with whites a minority. Blacks here are judges, policemen, lawyers and of many professions. It's like the blacks and white roles are flipped over. Come on now, it is funny as hell. There is plenty of goofs in the white world as goofy as Kingfish and Andy. There are many episodes that are of no compare to similar shows. of later vintage. It was a ground breaking "territory" on television.

@Janet Hartwig, Hello, I could tell a similar story. In the 1940s when my brother and I were probably right at school age, My mother drove the car 35 mi to the hospital in a major metropolitan city where my dad was an impatient and in very serious condition.
Children were not allowed to visit patients in the hospital in those days.
There was no one available to watch us children that day so she took us with her and locked us in the car while she went in the hospital to check on my dad. It turned out okay and my dad recovered from his situation but it was not the end of his medical problems until sometime later. Today this city is not a safe city that I would trust to be in at all.
What has happened? My theory is the breakdown of the family unit has caused a lot of societal problems. And I would say that the standards by which we choose to live determines the pathway we follow.

"Amos 'n Andy" showing black doctors, judges, attorneys, corporate executives, etc. on television? No wonder the NAACP wanted to take it off the air. It doesn't fit their narrative.

Maybe funny to U as a W/person, Because you didn't have to live in it on a daily base. To think blacks excepted W/people in Black face, as a good thing/joke, U must be a Meth head or on Heroin?.............smfh

Spencer Williams was a musician, composer and one of the pioneer African American filmmakers, directing numerous films for black audiences in the 30s and 40s. I've little information about the wonderful Tim Moore, however, one of W.C. Fields' funniest shorts, "The Fatal Glass of Beer" was pretty much written by Moore (Fields had purchased the skit from him years earlier). Excellent comedy performed by a very talented cast. Today, this show would have enjoyed a very lengthy run (really, it's no more controversial than "Sanford & Son", minus the racist and homophobic jokes).

The Lighten' character had a role in the excellent 50's all-black version of "Carmen"; he was not at all like his role in Amos & Andy.

some people think this program is racist. I don't think so. Every ethnic group likes to laugh and I don't see anything insulting about this series. Kingfish is a great schemer but most of his tricks turn out to be on himself.

Kingfish was smooth. I love this show. But kinda strange that a married couple slept in separate beds though. I guess back then that was too hot for TV.

I love to watch these old amos and andy shows, but I hate that whoever wrote the scripts for these shows always tried to show that black people were dumb as hell and stupid, when in reality if you look through all the negative inuendos in the show, you will see that these people were highly intelligent people. There should be a star on Hollywood's blvd with each and everyone one of these people's names on it.They were better than todays actors.

"Amos 'n Andy" is a comedy. Comedies show people doing dumb things that are funny, e.g., Lucille Ball in "I Love Lucy." People doing smart things isn't funny.
