I'm 71 years old today my fondest memories are of my family sitting around the television watching Amos and Andy! This was a hit show in those good old days!
To Ronnie Hayes and Ron English... You know how it's said that when you see or hear something in your earliest years it stays with you all your life? I feel that way about the opening theme song. It's a haunting melody, and has stayed with me all of my 72 years.
Just finished watching the Sapphire’s Turkeys episode after watching the first show about the Robbery. So funny ! I laughed so much. A wonderful show with great actors and story lines. Thanks !
I was just 5 years old when this show started. I remember watching it with my parents. I just loved the show it was so funny 🤣 😆. I was 7 years old when it ended. I was so sad to see it leave. When your 6 and 7 years old you can remember what you see on TV. Such a great show. I am now 75 years old and I miss the show very much. 😥😥😥😭😭

I'm 73 and this has been my favorite as far back as I can remember. My two things I looked forward to as a little boy was to get me a Derby Hat and cigar and be a Ho Bo and ride the rails .
Being an Aussie, this show wasn't seen over here, I've just discovered it about 3 days ago. What brilliant comedy that still stands well today and a lot better than many so-called sit-coms of today in 2020. The actors are great, warm and very funny. I'd love to see this program on regular television. I've been reading the various comments and see that the PC police managed to get it banned but they were wrong, it's hilarious with all of Kingfish's weird and wonderful plots. It's a really great and funny show and is now on my regular viewing list.
A bit of trivia for you----I know this was way before your time but I thought you might be interested to know that the Kingfish (Tim Moore) performed in a number of theaters in Australia around 1917.
@@faye55ful And this TV version not featured black actors in the lead roles but also in all other roles as well laying characters you’d never seen Before like business owners, judges, police, lawyers, writers, etc. Quite a big deal and a major contrast from when it was on radio - the white actors also played these characters in black face in the feature film they made decades before this show.
This is a very underrated show that should have had seasons after seasons for its supporters to enjoy. I first learned about this show when it was shown on Netflix. I enjoyed every episode and found it both funny and positive.
It is a shame this show received so much negative publicity. This is a very good show with good scripts and good actors. It depicts blacks in a much better light when compared to most "Black" programs that are on TV today.

Better, in my opinion. There was too much of Ralph Cramden and his yelling, hollering, in general loud antics. I remember both comedies from the days of my youth and A-n-A was always my favorite.

You have that right The Honeymooners has nothing on Amos and Andy. In fact The Honeymooners were awful. If it hadn't been for art Carney, it would not have even made it because Jackie Gleason just shot his big mouth off all the time. I'm 70 years old and I remember both of these shows and Amos and Andy is Head and shoulders above The Honeymooners. I saw a few episodes and said I don't want to watch this garbage. Amos and Andy makes you laugh but The Honeymooners really stunk,. Then Jackie Gleason had his own show and that bombed too
This was a great show that got a bum wrap based on the racist radio show. Great cast and the episodes still hold up to this day. A lot of modern sitcoms were either directly or indirectly influenced by it.

It was the first time that an all black cast was shown on t v and everyone in our town black and white lived the characters because they did such an excellent job caricaturing society at that time period.
I see a lot of humor in this show although according to today's sensibilities the characters do play to racialized stereotypes. However, like the Beulah show, I find a lot of cross cultural commonalities and shared humanity. "Holy mackerel Andy" was one of my dad's favorite exclamations. I love these you tubes. Thank you.

I believe I was about 8 back then, me and my brother and sisters would come in from school and look at Amos and Andy. It would come on every afternoon about 4:30 .

Many of the early TV sitcoms were taken from long time vaudeville acts that were well established way before the advent of either radio or TV. They reflected many ethnic stereotypes from theaters all around the USA going as far back as the early eighteen hundreds. When the immigrant population grew in the large cities, theater troupes from the Yiddish, Polish, Chinese and African American cultures became popular and were keyed to a focused group of people familiar with old stories culled from their culture. Stereotypical characters were adapted to the entertainment medium as it went from the stage to radio and then television. Many of the skits dealt with characters surviving by their wits in situations where poverty and restriction had them creating ways to "get around" the legal, cultural and social obstacles they encountered in daily life. They outsmarted policemen, fooled judges, hoodwinked grifters and managed to raise families despite the odds. Although many of these ethnic characters were stereotyped, their wit and wisdom made them much beloved. Their small battles, won against great cultural odds made them everyday, universal heroes.
The intresting thing about Amos 'n Andy is that through all it's iterations,that is, radio and film, it was when they finally cast Black actors in it's television version that most of the sterotypes and demeaning characterizations of Black people disappeared. I think the NAACP over stepped with this one. I consider this TV sitcom a classic.

It shows black professionals too - doctors, lawyers, nurses, etc. I used to watch it with several older black ladies who loved it and didn’t see anything demeaning about it. They hated it when it was taken off the air. One old man used to call me, “H” for Andrew H. Brown. 😹
My mom and grandma use to talk about this show. It’s sad that it was taken off the air for bad portrayal of black people. It’s not like there were hundreds of shows on tv staring African American actors. It seems to me as they were up to some of the same schemes, “hoodwinks and shenanigans” that ended up getting them in trouble as white actors. The same shows that got so much shine and credit. The same shows that are still getting residual checks because the reruns have been playing on tv. These are the same shows that African Americans watched and helped keep the ratings up. It’s sad that being born in 76 I was able to see all of those shows, but only hear about shows like this one. My children have even seen those shows but have never seen Amos and Andy on tv. I’m not upset with the NAACP, but I do think that they didn’t look at the big picture. This show was ground breaking and paved the way for so many African Americans. Over all it’s up to us to share these shows with our children. It’s a true classic and deserves more recognition. Thanks for sharing...I can’t wait to show my mom and aunt.

I've never heard the radio version of A&A but in my opinion this TV version is no more racist against black people than Gilligan's Island is racist against white people. They were talented actors playing their parts for laughs
The problem at that time was there were too few public examples of black people. This program served to perpetuate only a negative image. So black organizations protested because they felt this program further impeded black efforts to assimilate into the larger society. Today there are multiple images both positive and negative. Consequently today a program like this would receive more acceptance. Just my opinion.
Sorry I have to disagree, even though the general they're pretty good. The actor playing King Fish uses stereotypical speech that southern black speech supposedly used. I've known people from the deep south older generation and they didn't talk like that
Gilligan's Island lol as many people as there were, that had made their way to that island, I don't remember one black face. The island would have been segregated if Maryann had been black lol.
I think this TV show demonstrated a very tight community and well organized successful Black community. They got along with each other. Many of the Black characters were anchors in the community - lawyers, doctors, judges, shop owners and more. They never mentioned race or complained about other races. The Kingfish was dishonest but he got paid back for doing wrongs to Andy.
@Baadass Mofo having enjoyed both the radio and the TV versions of Amos and Andy, I really have to say that Tim Moore was much funnier than the radio king fish, and he did the voice with his own inflections just a little differently. Tim Moore was very very excellent
One of the funniest, best and clean shows on TV then and now. Superb actors as if each cast member were born to play their rolls. My favorite actor was Calhoon, (Johnny Lee) he always cracked me up !
I watched this show when I was a kid. There was no cable back then. Tv antenna only. The small town I lived in we only picked three stations and one of them was educational. We hardly saw people our color on TV especially their own show. Crime wasn't nearly as bad as it is now.
You have got to find the episode where Kingfish sells a house to Andy. Its maybe the best one. I wont spoil it by telling you about it. "Kingfish Sells A Lot".

For an early 50's attempt at sitcom, Amos & Andy was pretty funny. In 1951 this was cutting edge. Then NAACP shut it down and cost a lot of struggling Black actors their steady jobs. Go figure. Explain how All In The Family, Three's Company, The Beverly Hillbillies, Gomer Pyle, The Jeffersons, Sanford And Son, Abbott and Costello, The Honeymooners are different than the Amos and Andy TV show? These comic geniuses were like family to me when I was a kid, I love them all.
I have heard many compare Amos and Andy to The Honeymooners series of early television. I watched both as a young boy and then as now, there has never been any comparison. Andy & Kingfish are stereotyped. Lightning & Calhoun are stereotyped too, but there are also black lawyers, landlords, store owners, restaurant managers, police officers, judges and all sorts of other responsible businessmen on the show. Amos owned a cab company and had a beautiful wife and daughter, Etc. Back then, only racists didn't watch the show because they didn't want to watch a "N" show! There's nothing "racist" about this great comedy TV show

Spencer Williams was an accomplished film maker before Amos n Andy. He produced a number of "race films" in the 1940s. One was called Juke Joint. In his younger days, Spencer rode with General Pershing after Pancho Villa into Mexico when he was in the army. Tim Moore was at one time a professional fighter in his younger days. They all had talent and many did voice acting in Disney animated movies as well. I believe they could have continued for a few more seasons if the NAACP didn't raise such a stink.

Wow. I grew up in Arkansas. Same thing here, came on around 4:30 on WREG TV out of Memphis. It was my afternoon program after I finished my home work.

My mom and grandma use to talk about this show. It’s sad that it was taken off the air for bad portrayal of
black people. It’s not like there were hundreds of shows on tv staring African American actors. It seems to me as they were up to some of the same schemes, “hoodwinks and shenanigans” that ended up getting them in trouble as white actors. The same shows that got so much shine and credit. The same shows that are still getting residual checks because the reruns have been playing on tv. These are the same shows that African Americans watched and helped keep the ratings up. It’s sad that being born in 76 I was able to see all of those shows, but only hear about shows like this one. My children have even seen those shows but have never seen Amos and Andy on tv. I’m not upset with the NAACP, but I do think that they didn’t look at the big picture. This show was ground breaking and paved the way for so many African Americans. Over all it’s up to us to share these shows with our children. It’s a true classic and deserves more recognition. Thanks for sharing...I can’t wait to show my mom and aunt.

I've never heard the radio version of A&A but in my opinion this TV version is no more racist against black people than Gilligan's Island is racist against white people. They were talented actors playing their parts for laughs

The problem at that time was there were too few public examples of black people. This program served to perpetuate only a negative image. So black organizations protested because they felt this program further impeded black efforts to assimilate into the larger society. Today there are multiple images both positive and negative. Consequently today a program like this would receive more acceptance. Just my opinion.
Sorry I have to disagree, even though the general they're pretty good. The actor playing King Fish uses stereotypical speech that southern black speech supposedly used. I've known people from the deep south older generation and they didn't talk like that
Gilligan's Island lol as many people as there were, that had made their way to that island, I don't remember one black face. The island would have been segregated if Maryann had been black lol.

I think this TV show demonstrated a very tight community and well organized successful Black community. They got along with each other. Many of the Black characters were anchors in the community - lawyers, doctors, judges, shop owners and more. They never mentioned race or complained about other races. The Kingfish was dishonest but he got paid back for doing wrongs to Andy.
@Baadass Mofo having enjoyed both the radio and the TV versions of Amos and Andy, I really have to say that Tim Moore was much funnier than the radio king fish, and he did the voice with his own inflections just a little differently. Tim Moore was very very excellent

One of the funniest, best and clean shows on TV then and now. Superb actors as if each cast member were born to play their rolls. My favorite actor was Calhoon, (Johnny Lee) he always cracked me up !

I watched this show when I was a kid. There was no cable back then. Tv antenna only. The small town I lived in we only picked three stations and one of them was educational. We hardly saw people our color on TV especially their own show. Crime wasn't nearly as bad as it is now.

For an early 50's attempt at sitcom, Amos & Andy was pretty funny. In 1951 this was cutting edge. Then NAACP shut it down and cost a lot of struggling Black actors their steady jobs. Go figure. The fact is, most humor is racist, sexist, or something or another-ist. No need to be so sensitive about it. Thanks for posting the vid.

Explain how All In The Family, Three's Company, The Beverly Hillbillies, Gomer Pyle, The Jeffersons, Sanford And Son, Abbott and Costello, The Honeymooners are different than the Amos and Andy TV show? These comic geniuses were like family to me when I was a kid, I love them all.
I have heard many compare Amos and Andy to The Honeymooners series of early television. I watched both as a young boy and then as now, there has never been any comparison. A-n-A was by far the best any way looked at. Ralph Cramden got old really fast (to me) with every episode consisting of Jackie Gleason feeling the need to be loud in almost every scene. Man cant believe getting to watch this after so many years. Listened to it on the radio until we got our first tv. Listened to this and lone ranger and tonto,and gunsmoke,there was another my brother remembered was flash gordon. He is older born in 47 i was born in 1950. Highlight of the day when my mother made is come in for the day get a bath for school in the morning snd put down a blanket in front of the old RCA Victer radio

Andy & Kingfish are stereotyped. Lightning & Calhoun are stereotyped too, but there are also black lawyers, landlords, store owners, restaurant managers, police officers, judges and all sorts of other responsible businessmen on the show. Amos owned a cab company and had a beautiful wife and daughter, Etc. Back then, only racists didn't watch the show because they didn't want to watch a "N" show! There's nothing "racist" about this great comedy TV show

Pioneers for black tv shows...
Spencer Williams was an accomplished film maker before Amos n Andy. He produced a number of "race films" in the 1940s. One was called Juke Joint. In his younger days, Spencer rode with General Pershing after Pancho Villa into Mexico when he was in the army. Tim Moore was at one time a professional fighter in his younger days. They all had talent and many did voice acting in Disney animated movies as well. I believe they could have continued for a few more seasons if the NAACP didn't raise such a stink.
