Frankie Darrow great actor in his day I enjoy watching his movie what can I say about Mantan Moreland love the guy very good actor I enjoy watching him in Charlie Chan Movie these old movies I still watch till this day movies like these you wont ever see again today no swearing good clean movies they did not have all the Tech back then like today you imagine how much these two actor would get pay today ? cherish these movies I do thanks
Not only that, but in many of these with Mr. Moreland, like this one, it's made DELIBERATELY CLEAR that the black gentleman is going to terrible waste with a !@^%$% broom in his hand.
So many complaints over the decades that Mantan Moreland kept being cast as a dumb man afraid of dead bodies and monsters. But over the decades Lou Costello and Stan Laurel kept getting cast as a dumb man afraid of dead bodies and monsters. Racism?
He is ME, that's half the reason I love him. He just gets very-very nervous, that's all, and I am the same way, without a breath of shame or apology. He doesn't have to be Don Knotts to making a proper killing being hilarious when "scared." Nobody could follow Moreland's act.
That's because in the Charlie Chan films he was working with his scene partner, Ben Carter. They used to do that routine in Vaudeville. One of them, Dark Alibi, was Ben Carter's final film appearence before his death. Moe Howard said in an interview that their routine was one of the funniest he'd seen.
I've watched Mantan in many but not yet all of his films, included among them are a couple of all Negro casts.Although they are amusing he works better off white supporting casts.A war veteran and a hard working man in establishing training in the trades for his community.A life well lived.🙏
I understand that Moe Howard wanted Mantan Moreland to be the third :Stooge after Shemp had a stroke, of course we know how that worked out. The shriveldicks nixed that idea. Too bad, Stooge fans missed a real treat I'd bet.
Are we going to talk about how Frankie was in blackface in a few scenes? I think that the comment section here sweeps under the rug the fact that Frankie, a white actor, was in blackface, which is offensive to black people. Ps: I still love Frankie, he was talented and beautiful imo (feel free to disagree on that second part lmao) (We lost him too soon) but the blackface part should not be ignored tbh
How insulting … and this routine was perfected by two real Black comedians. So nice to know that our skin was and often remains the object of humor. Unintentionally deliberate racism …
OUCH, yeah I see what's got everybody a little sore now, it's the "comedy routine." And this is radio? At least they don't expect us to accept the stupid one trying to become a doctor as in a previous movie about this Frankie and his maltreated pet Jeff.
So sick of people like you, that can't just enjoy the movie for what it is, and leave their lousy racism out of it! If you can't say anything nice, then JUST, SHUT YOUR LOUSY MOUTH, AND DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL !!!!

I just google mantan movies and go from there. He was great in Charlie Chan! Moe Howard wanted him to be a stooge after Shemp died but the casting shitheads chose Joe Besser.
These two make a fun duo, but it’s hard to get past the black face scenes. I try to appreciate the performances and overlook the racism of that time period, but it’s not easy.
Frankie Darrow: unwatchable movie creep, a completely detestable creature, a thief and a stalker, a half-narcissist (because he's so tiny), bottomlessly self-serving and entitled. The character clearly had no box office appeal. Mantan Moreland clearly did.
I know people will disagree and of course call me a racist but I always saw blackface as just stupid humor with the person in it looking ridiculous. I guess a French, English or German person could be offended by someone of another nationality pretending to be one in a movie. I wonder what Mantan and other black actors of that time thought about their movies years later. People in the future will probably be offended by things most people today, even the politically correct ones, find to be funny.
I never understood the white lips on blackface. Black people don't have white lips! What the hell was that all about? And why no noise about "Chinaface"? most famously used in Charlie Chan films but also in many others. There won't be a future if people don't learn to chill and not take offense over everything.
@@GazGuitarz They do howl about that too. You aren't supposed to play the role of a character whose ethnicity is different from you. Gender difference I think is ok. I thought acting involved playing a character that was different from you and assuming a convincing person of a different ethnicity was part of acting. So why is Hamilton accepted?
Just sick of people that insist in bringing their crappy so called Political correct racist crap into these, instead of enjoying the movie for what it is, and chilling out. Frankie Darro and Mantan Moreland make a good team.
I think it's wonderful they could break into the films by using humor and knowing that they were not really like the characters they depicted.

That cross=talk comedy routine was almost painful to listen to, knowing it was done a whole lot better in the Charlie Chan movies.

One of them, Dark Alibi, was Ben Carter's final film appearence before his death. Moe Howard said in an interview that their routine was one of the funniest he'd seen.
A Mantan Moreland comic dance routine! It's too short, and they cut too much, but it's nice to see what he may have done on stage.
Frankie is so cute haha
