Buck Wing was played by Keye Luke who was born in China in 1904, just two years after Mantan. They both had long movie careers. Mantan started movies in 1933 and Keye in 1935 as Chan's Number 1 son. His last role was in 1990 in Woody Allen's "Alice". Mantan had health problems in the '60's and died in 1973. Keye was given stereotypical roles too, but often of better quality. He was a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild. That leads to a question. Was there a place for Black actors in the Guild? I don't know the answer.
Mantan Moreland displayed his comic genius again. Wikipedia states that Moe Howard from the 3 Stooges wanted to have Mr. Moreland as the 3rd stooge after Shemp died. Unfortunately he had to settle for Joe Bessler. Gale Storm was in a tv series about 60+ years ago. Her co-star was Zasu Pitts. During the 1930's Marcia Mae was in a movie which starred Shirley Temple. The actress from the "zombie" movie was also in this movie. Frank Faylen, who played Dobie Gillis's father, arrived in the latter part of this movie. All in all this movie was COMIC RELIEF.
@@charleswoods9809 I saw Frank Darro in another movie where he played the son of an Irish policeman. Darro wanted to be on the police force just like his father had done when he was alive. I was impressed by the way Frank Darro and Mantan Moreland acted out their comic routines. They seemed, in my eyes, to be a terrific comedy duo.
@@JaneFrieman The Darro film you are describing sounds like "Irish Luck" (1939). It also features Mantan Moreland. Darro and Moreland made a great Salt and Pepper screen duo. Many people are unaware that Darro was the actor who played "Robby The Robot" in the Sci-Fi classic "The Forbidden Planet" (1956). ReelBlack appreciates your viewing support. Be well and be safe. Nobody notices the Oriental guy that's the number one son from Charlie Chan and the lady in the kitchen with Martin they both played in Kings of the zombies
i never knew they had movies we were featured in let alone starred in in the early 1900s, from what we're told i always thought we weren't in any movies til 1970s. how come i never found out about this or even heard a rumor or something???
I said the same thing. Even called my mother & asked why was i never informedof this era. I feel as though yet another chunk of my history has been hidden from me. I am so happy I stumbled across this chanel ✊🏾❤🙏🏾
NOW IM SURE IF U PONDER THE QUESTION U WILL REMEMBER HEARING MILDRED JOANNE SMITH & SIDNEY POITIER WERE IN A MOVIE IN LATE 1940S, HE CONTD 2 APPEAR AFTER THAT BUT FREDERICK DOUGLASS PRODUCTION CO RELEASED RACE FILMS 🎥 🎞 (ALL BLK CAST) AS EARLY AS 1917 -VERY HARD 2 FIND BC THEY WERE NON HOLLYWOOD 😉
Maybe then you don't know about Paul Robeson. He was a famous actor and singer from the '20's. In movies, he is known for his roles in "Showboat" and "Emperor Jones" in the '30's. In music, he was a world-renowned singer who performed in many countries. Also there was Josephine Baker who became a star in France from the twenties on. Then there was Spencer Williams Jr who was an actor and producer from the twenties on.
The Asian dude was given a quality role, even back then. The Asian community should be proud of that role. No stereotypes whatsoever! Tell me again, how black Americans & Asians are the same again? I'm using my trickology skills, learned from Dr. Woods.
Keye Luke was number 1 son of the Charlie Chan movies. Years later he was one of the supporting actors in the Kung Fu series starring David Carradine, son of actor John Carradine.
A well-dressed, well-behaved, civilized black man working for a living ---what's wrong with the stereotype Moreland is depicting ? (only a 50-cent snoop dog sharpton can hate him)
I truely love these light-hearted comedies , they always leave me smileing . I can never get enough of Mantan Moreland .
I love these old movies. A much simpler time.

I'll watch anything with Mantan Moreland appearing. March, 2023.
Ms. Whitten and Mr. Moreland singing a duet. They were fantastic together in KING OF THE ZOMBIES.
The actual shots of the rowing competition are from the 1932 Summer Olympics. Long Beach- that's why one see's plenty of oil towers.

@@charleswoods9809 Thank you.
It’s really too bad that Moreland didn’t become the 3rd Stooge. Would have been great.
Mantan Moreland is the best.

I thought i was pretty aware of blacks in the movies pre 1960 but never heard of Maitland Moreland until I started watching charlie chan on a whim.

@@anis8197 I'm sure this movie was shot and released long before Pearl Harbor.
Black slaves built the railroads in the East. Chinese wage slaves built the railroads in the West. They weren't treated very well either.
Keye Luke and Mantan Moreland, together again.
Originally released in September 1941.
❤
Never seen this one before.😊
Thank you ✊🏽
