  • KINGFISH'S SECRETARY The Kingfish, flush with money willed to the Lodge Hall by a departed brother, decides to improve the place by hiring a beautiful secretary. The secretary, Daphne Jackson, also acts as a public stenographer and, in this capacity, she types a letter for Mr. Williams, who is answering a matrimonial ad. She leaves the letter on her desk and the Kingfish, thinking it's a letter he dictated to an employment agen-cy requesting a scrubwoman, signs and mails it without reading it-a move that causes him not just a little em-barassment.

This show was funny on the radio(1940's) and funny on the television(1950's). Now in the twenty first century it is still 'side splitting' humorous. I think the Amos and Andy show will rank in the top ten funniest comedy series of all time. That is my opinion and I am unanimous in that. Sincerely Bobbie from Silver Spring,Maryland.

As an elementary school kid I never missed an episode .hearing that accapello choir intro still puts me in a good mood. The series was beautifully written , incredibly well acted, and in my humble opinion probably one of the best sitcoms ever. I only wish the people involved were alive to receive the accolades they deserved. The characters they portrayed were universal and crossed all racial lines as I’ve known these characters in my own life in all colors . I can’t help thinking that this show became the template for a lot sitcoms that followed including the honeymooners and countless others. A true piece of comic art that will last forever.

Your comments express what so many, many feel about this show I'm sure. Thank you for memorializing the participants with your kind words. Each episode was very special in its own way and was good, clean, moral, laughable and family-friendly comedy. Did you know that Tim Moore's special quote was "I've made it a point never to tell a joke on stage that I could not tell in front of my mother".
True, they did not receive their rewards here but the spiritual reward is the best.

I like watching these. I can see where there's cause for concern regarding stereotypes. However, many characters on the show where beautiful, classy, dignified, and articulate, and most characters played "white-collar" professionals.
In addition, there is no denying their ingenious comedic timing and phrasing of one liners. Furthermore, I see their influence on Sanford and Son and even Archie bunker, because like Kingfish, he was always mispronouncing word.
So, yes, I see both sides of the argument. But there is no denying their comedic gifts.

I thought i would be watching a 'racist' program.
It is actually a comedy in the 50's that showed Black people in a lighthearted and acceptable way. I think the people of today compare it to now. This was actually a way to integrate in that period. Wasnt too bad at all. A typical comedy of the era infusing Black people. All races were over projected in that era. Lucy/Dezi, Kramden/Norton, Abbott/Castello. All dumbed down and slapstick. This was no different accept Black cast was involved.
Yes the dialect is a bit tough, but those were the times.
    Now? Unacceptable.. 1951? Groundbreaking.
Young people should watch this to see how far things can go in 50 years. The whites were embracing Blacks, not dumbing them down in that era. Took guts.

The part of Daphne Jackson was played by Jeni Le Gon.
Impressive that her hair style looked timeless, with looking contemporary for all the subsequent decades up to the 21st century; and it was also natural, too, which was unique for African-American actresses of that era, which generally had their hair straightened.
For Daphne to refer to her boss by his first name of George . . . that familiarity for a newly hired female secretary was generally frowned upon in the 1950s workplace, as office etiquette would have Daphne properly refer to George as "Mister Stevens."
The intensity that Ernestine Wade performed as Sapphire should have won her an Emmy for actress in a comedy series.

Please give Amos and Andy a measure of respect, and put it into perspective. (The t.v. show, not the earlier radio version.)
Think about the popular white comedy shows at the time: "I Love Lucy"... "The Honemooners"... "The Three Stooges"... "Laurel & Hardy". They were all based on buffoonery. Amos and Andy wasn't any dumber than any of them. It did have some wit and dignity to it, especially in comparison to some of the other dumb stuff out there at the time. It also portrayed black ppl in office jobs and other upwardly mobile positions, not just as maids and shoe shiners. That's not for nothing.

Honestly along with "I Love Lucy" and "The Honeymooners", the TV show version of "Amos & Andy" I think is one of the funniest sitcoms of the 50's. In terms of acting, writing, and comedic talent it is easily just as good as those two classics. The radio show? Hell yes, that show was racist. I've seen documentaries on the TV show and the arguments for both sides...and IMO both sides of the argument are correct. But I can't get around the fact I find this show hilarious. The actors and actresses are stellar, great comedic timing, and worked fantastic as an ensemble cast. Are some of the characters questionable? Yes. But I'm not sure labeling everything about those characterizations as stereotypical is fair. Ralph Cramdon, Lucy, Fred and Barney, Greg Brady's "music" career...almost every 70's, 80's etc sitcom had characters with the same personalities. Greed, desire for quick money or fame, stupid actions....it's a common sitcom and movie plot device, it helps drive the comedy. I can't disagree with anyone who is justifiably offended and hurt, but when I view this show now I'm amazed by the talent of the cast.

all sitcoms (situation comedy) have a clownish character to take the edge off of sometimes serious topics.. Like in Goodtimes. They dealt with some serious issues in the Chicago hood, but JJ was there to ad a comical side

It was basically the Kingfish show with Andy. Tim Moore was a genius comic so no wonder they made the show about his character

I wonder if the Traveler's aid is anything like the Green book kind of thing where we learned about places to stay that were safe for those who could not stay in "white" hotels...Shame we jumped into not keeping this up post-integration. Would have saved people a lot of money and kept the black dollar in the black community.

Traveler's Aid is a charity organization that still exists. It is available to stranded travelers in many larger cities and they can help anyone who finds themself in a hardship when traveling. The Green Book was another tool that helped Black people navigate their travel back in the day when we were not allowed accommodations in the White establishments. A few of the businesses from the Green Book days still operate today. We can still educate as we elevate and entertain one another. ✊🏾👍🏾

Great idea . If people support their own communities neighborhoods would not have deterated as much . People would have local businesses close by and not have to travel to shop.
