I'm 73. I saw the original episodes on NBC, the only TV network we got in central rural Upstate New York, near Cooperstown, in the early 1950's. Thank you for bringing these highly-skilled and artistic programs to RUclips. I have no apologies to make as a white man, that this was great comedy and excellent writing and acting. I do think that the original radio program was a mockery by white men, as well as Al Jolson's mockery. These are not my responsibility, nor my guilt. I just caught the poetic and beautifully romantic lines between Darlene and Andy: "I'm out for a breath of fresh air." "Do you mind if I breathe along with you?" Such rare scripting is not to be found in the crude and sarcastic put-down comedy of the past many decades!

I'm 62. The original radio programs may have over-cariacatured a few of the characters, but for the most part, the dialect was spot on.

They banned it because apparently, people thought the show showed black people in a negative light.
Also, if you search hard enough, you can find some of the old Amos n Andy radio programs (try to find the ones that are pre-1943, those were the best as there was no laugh track/studio audience and were way better paced.

@@musket-hc1fc As long as they don't change the personality of the characters I think it should be good. Because to me that's what makes the show. Each character is unique in their own way. The sly Kingfish. The not so smart Andy. The good and wise Amos. The hot and fiery Sapphire, who always catches Kingfish in the act. The out spoken mother in law. Lightening, a little slow but nice. Calhoun, kind of nice, but a little slick. All these characters make the show. And I loved watching the reruns when I was growing up.

I grew up wanting to be just like Calhoun. The beauty of ethnic speech and Calhoun's performances in court, influence to this day, my poetic and prosodic sensibilities. All great art must endure the weight of banning and censorship; however, I can remember our maids who were embarrassed and ashamed of Amos n' Andy. The show hurt them. So I couldn't watch the show anymore. Then I fell inlove with Little Richard but I couldn't listen to his records because "he was part of a communist plot to subvert the youth of America." Decades later Aretha Franklin would sing, on a moments notice, Nessun Dorma because Luciano Pavarotti was unable to perform due to illness. The performance brought me to tears and I thought Mary (our maid long deceased) might approve. Yet, in the background of the accolades, there was those murmuring "she should stick to soul." My biggest mistake was yet to come when I mused out loud that Marshal Mathers is the Walt Whitman of our century. The only way to escape this ethnolinguistic insanity is to speak another language. Миру Мир.

It is very easy to understand all the negativity at that time. It was a sign of the times. Never compare one era with another. These actors had jobs and were doing what they loved “acting” and not acting a fool like so many other so-called- shows of the 70’s, 80’s 90’s as well as today. I find myself watching foreign movies just so I can watch something of quality. American entertainment lost something after the fifties and sixties, and it’s called “pure talent”. Today it’s all about glam and glitter, but no substance. It’s like eating at the Olive Gardens compared to a real authentic Italian restaurant….or Obama to Trump.
C’mon America! Bring back the quality!

I can't find anything offensive about the Amos and Andy show! It was a comedy! The actors were very impressive! Not like the family with those grown children living in a two bedroom project, and the most intelligent line from their loser son was Dinomite! I love the Amos and Andy show! They had black everything!

DEAR LORD please bind the reprobate kingfish spirit away from our children! In the name of JESUS! In one episode he goes into his "prayer" closet to mock! Says goodbye to his conscience later and laughs a demonic laugh because he thinks he fooled his conscience. For money. We know who the liar is! GOD took Amos & Andy off for the good of ALL! Sad they're so talented. OBVIOUSLY someone will look them up again.
