    Like his Swiss Army Knife, the Timex watch was part of MacGyver’s iconic Every Day Carry kit in the first 3 and a half seasons - he lost the watch in the ‘Runners’ episode when he had to pawn* it to pay for his gas after Jennifer Reiner stole all the money out of his jacket pocket while giving him a hug. Hios windup watch fits MacGyver’s function over fashion sensibilities perfectly. The simple analog dial gives both 12 and 24-hour reading. The windup function means he never has to worry about flat batteries and the 30-meter water resistance lets the watch take a dip without any problems.

  • @maingun07

    I don't own this watch nor have I handled one nor do I have any knowledge of this watch beyond this video. However, as a US Marine Corps tank crewman from that era (1987-1993), I'd like to toss in my 2 cents as to why the Corps may have rejected this watch.
    First and most importantly is the water resistance. Marines are amphibious. We get dunked on a regular basis. As a tank crewman, you wouldn't think that I'd swim all that often and you'd be correct. However, we did have fording kits that we would mount to the tank to cross shallow water (i.e. below the top of the turret). That doesn't mean that we all stay dry and comfy as were crossing a stream or driving from a landing craft onto a beach. Armored vehicles leak like a sieve and if you've ever seen one hit the beach, you'd notice a jet of water shooting off to one side. That's the bilge pump trying to purge all of the water from the crew compartment. Marines are defined by water. It's kinda in the name.
    Second is that domed crystal. A field watch needs to sit flat. Acrylic is good for it's shatter resistance, but everyone knows how easily it scratches. Now put a dome on it and make it stick further out from the case and you're just asking for scratches. I can see that watch being so scuffed up that's it's difficult to read after only a month in the field. Furthermore, that domed effect that looks so pretty both reduces the angle at which the watch is legible as well as creating surfaces that can reflect light back at the enemy. That's bad juju.
    Third is the spring bars. Spring bars are held in by teeny tiny little posts where as fixed bars are either welded to or are integral with the case. Even with a NATO strap (which I don't recall ever seeing during my years of active duty), it doesn't take much to pop both bars and lose the watch. Even if you only pop one bar, you've now got a piece of gear that is flopping around very likely for the remainder of your deployment. Marines do not typically deploy with watch makers to supply new spring bars to the troops.
    Fourth is the crown. An exposed crown like that with no sloping crown guards is a magnet for snags as anyone who has handled cammie netting can tell you. That g#$%^&n m@#$%^&*ing netting will grab any little bit of anything that sticks out. I've had watches ripped completely off my wrist by the stuff. Snags when you're Ricky Reconning through the bush is bad mojo. Snags when your trying to get the f#@%ing tank under the cammie net makes you want to frag things. Snags are bad.
    I've been out for nearly 30 years now and live rural on a small homestead out on the High Plains, but my requirements for a tool/field watch haven't changed all that much. I can easily see why the Marine Corps gave this watch a hard pass and honestly I'm afraid that I'm going to have to do the same.
    One last note: If you are going to reply to this comment by saying, "Thank you for your service." then let's just pretend that you've already said it and I've said, "Thanks". I honestly do appreciate the sentiment, but it's irrelevant to the conversation.

The white face one is really nice it’s not a pure white it’s like a vanilla off-white that matches the twin stripes on the band perfectly. Simple and rugged which is why MacGyver always wore it.

    A nice looking watch. I really like wearing a good field watch and have quite a few of them from other brands. At around this price point though I can recommend the field watches from Lorus. The Lumibrite version at £29.99 here in the UK has mineral glass and is very slim on the wrist and has 100M water resistance. The Lumibrite watch face however is just as good as this Timex but also has the day/date complication. My Lorus came on a fabric strap but because it felt quite flimsy I put it on a good leather strap. Nice video though and would maybe add this Timex to my collection in the future. I have a Hamilton Khaki King field watch with a day/date and it's totally worth the price I paid for it, the only downside being the water resistance down to 50M from 100M but the upside being the sapphire crystal and the increased power reserve 80 hours.

    Sadly, I disagree. The only thing that stops me from agreeing with you is the stem. I’ve not owned a Timex analog watch that held on to it’s stem more than a few days. I’m old so I can’t see digital watches’ digits very well but I found a Timex, an Atlantis 100, on the ground at a landfill about 15 years ago that is my favorite beater. One thing I have to say about Timex is they will replace their watches that fail or give a discount on a replacement. I have returned several for replacement. One other thing is water resistance. I have not had a 30 meter rated watch leak. I wear my watches in the shower, pool, and ocean. In salt water, I would wear a 30 meter watch when snorkeling. I know this kind of wear is beyond the factory specs but a field watch must by definition survive and thrive in the bush.

    Not sure the SNK is a fair comparison, I disagree about the dial, I am 6’2 with over 8 inch wrists and the SNZ never looked small. I find the timex dial a little busy. I agree about the WR, but at this price the Lorus lumibrite is a better option at 100m WR. I had a timex weekender sitting on the table next to me and it was like sitting next to a grandfather clock…. Great video

    I listened to my Casio quartz watch just now and there's no ticking whatsoever. I wonder why a quartz watch would make noise.

  • @jorge23483
    @jorge23483 3 года назад

    Well... the second hand noise is kinda an infamous characteristic of quartz watches, especially in the affordable category. I have two weekenders: a chronograph and a small seconds... and I was lucky enough that both doesn't make the infamous Timex ticking thanks to the small second hand on both. I think this Timex mk1 looks super cool with that dome acrylic and the markers, I have a Hamilton mechanical and I really like the field watch look. I agree about the design of this mk1 being is better in comparison to the design of the weekender, wich is a little more monotonous, but the weekender reminds me more of the trench watches with those straight lugs. Thanks for the video.

      @@the1010watchclub I have the SNK805, the green dial... I think if you had it in on wrist you would "get" it, it's really a remarkably versatile watch, feels quality... great field watch. Can't speak on the size for you but it certainly doesn't feel small for its size. Throw it on a quality leather, looks so good..
      Since I posted this, I went ahead and got the Timex TW2R68300, light grey dial with dark grey strap, and I LOVE it... so anyone who is on the fence about this watch, just get it. It's very well balanced, great design, light, versatile, Indiglo is awesome. The tick is very loud but a nice tone of ticking, kind of like a little clock ... personally I love that. I am trying to convince myself the second hand totally not lining up is also part of the Timex charm... but what do you want for so little money. The acrylic crystal and dial look GREAT... get polywatch. Dope, love it!
